Let me begin in saying that I am 15 weeks pregnant with twins. This is my second pregnancy, and the second pregnancy that I planned on using Nanticoke Women's Health Services in Seaford, DE. My first experience, especially with Dr. Baxter, was overall relatively smooth and pleasant.
Today, I had an appointment at 10:15 AM. I arrived at 10:00 AM; I was not called into a patient room until after 11:00 AM. The nurse, who was very friendly, asked me a series of questions that are protocol (how many pregnancies, surgery history, etc.). After she left, I waited another 20 minutes.
Dr. Arthur Jones then arrived at my room (with no handshake of greeting and no apologies for the wait time); he is new to the practice (at least newer than my last pregnancy 2 years ago), so I had no prior experience with him. He then began asking me the same questions that the nurse had previously asked 10 minutes prior. After the third question, I asked him, "Why am I answering the same questions the nurse just asked me?" He then proceeded to stand up, picked up his electronic device, and walked to the door, stating, "We will reschedule this appointment." Then, he walked out. I followed him, and asked him "why?" He sat down at his desk and stared at the computer screen, refusing to engage in a conversation with me. I asked him: "as a patient, why am I not allowed to ask why I'm answering the same questions I just answered 10 minutes prior?" He did not answer. A nurse next to him said that it is "some doctors' protocol to double-check and confirm your answers."
Now, without getting into the redundancy of this "protocol," my frustration stems from a doctor's adamant refusal to engage in a conversation with a patient, especially a patient who has waited approximately an hour and 1/2 to be seen by a doctor. This is not customer service, especially in a service (OBGYN) that should cater to women and women's needs. And, he was putting himself and perhaps his anger at my question above the welfare of myself and my unborn twins. Frankly, he did not care that I am going to have to wait three more weeks until an appointment opens to be seen for the first time in a high-risk pregnancy. I am highly disappointed in his demeanor as a doctor; I honestly cannot believe that Nanticoke Women's Health Center would allow such negative doctor-patient interactions.
