My girlfriend registered to take a CPR certification course with the Red Cross. I was certified last year, and do not have need of the diploma. However, I intended to audit the course, just to refresh my memory and ensure that I will be effective in a moment of crisis. I was told that I was not allowed to audit if I hadn't registered and paid for that course. I figured the fee was only for the certification, which I already have, and not the knowledge on how to save lives for the good of society. I was abhorred that the Red Cross, a nonprofit whose purported aim is to help others, wouldn't allow me to audit their course when I am already certified. We want to save lives. Why, ARC, won't you let us?

This is a great organization. The historical posters on the wall inside the building are a pretty cool touch. I've been here to get first-aid training and both instructors I've had were excellent. The place is way on the West Side, so factor that into travel plans.

Want to give blood? There are blood drives here every second Monday and last Tuesday of the month from 12:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Otherwise check their website for miscellaneous drive around the city. When I visited (looking for a place to donate) they weren't having a drive, but pointed out a place in town where one was going on. There weren't many people around, but there was a very kind man in one of the offices to guide me through the process of find a ongoing blood drive in the city.

Most people don't realize that the great majority of the people providing help through the Red Cross are volunteers. They are highly trained, dedicated and the most caring people you will ever meet. They are highly accountable and conscientious with donated dollars and go the extra mile to find all sources of help. I'm proud to say I retired from there as an employee after 23 years and remained a volunteer for years after.

After losing my place to a fire from a neighboring place, I got told my home was deemed hazardous & not livable. Red Cross finally shows up late into the night, with out enough blankets or water. Then they took sweet time to assist all the families.

The building is a bit sterile and empty, so it feels cold and unwelcoming. However, the people who work here and administer your blood donations are incredibly friendly. If you're looking to donate to an organization with a national network, this isn't a bad place to do it. Overall it takes a bit over an hour and you get snacks afterward.

I went to get trained in Pediatric CPR First Aid. Waited over an hour for the instructor :/ Overall it was quite a learning experience. Very hands on especially when you have a class with only three people.

It's not in a very noisy part of the city. I like going here when I'm due for a donation but can't set an appointment. I don't feel rushed here. Only drawback is on a few occasions, the computer system was messed up and they had to cancel the appointments. I've gotten there 2X to have this happen. A third time, I checked my email before heading out and saw the cancelation notice.

I seem to live and breathe in the place 24-7 ( I work and volunteer as a Supervising Full Responder and Field Trainer for the DAT Response Department), so my comment here could be considered as bias. But I will state this: it is a fact that the ARC provides services that help bring countless others out of despair and into resolve. Be it responding to fires and vacates, collecting donated blood for those in greater need, providing free fire alarms to the less fortunate, or offering and teaching necessary training and skills to those looking to also make a tremendous difference, the American Red Cross in Greater New York is certainly an entity or organization that strives in the field of absolute optimism and overall benefit to those living in the greater NY area. Again, that is a fact. Ya heard?!

American Red Cross on a whole is a great organization. However, I've never seen the staff here be particularly helpful to the public. As a local part of this organization, they don't seem to provide a lot for the local community. I would love to see local availability of first aid kits and better assistance from front end staff.

Obviously not needing blood that bad if they come to your job to beg people to donate and I cant get off the phones in time so im 5 minutes late. They had me walk all the way back to the other side of the building to grab my license just to tell me since I'm 5 minutes late they can't take me. Irritating. I will not be donating anymore. Sick of getting all the phone calls, emails, texts begging for blood when they turn you down for being 5 minutes late. Don't come to a call center knowing we cant hang up on callers just to go donate some freaking blood. If it takes an hour to pull blood than there's an issue. They could of gotten me in and done in a reasonable amount of time. Lazy. Highly unnecessary.
