When my 92 year old mother, aa resident at Valley cares assisted living, was taken to visit the dentist due to a toothache, she was in for a bitter surprise. After a momentary, perfunctory look into her mouth (no mirrors or tools or even looking closely), the oral surgeon, Mr. Bench, rather than even asking my mother where it hurt, instead turned to the activities director of the facility who had been kind enough to drive my mother in, and began to verbally abuse her. He claimed that my mother had not had her teeth brushed in days, if not longer (which was false). He ranted about the facility's dismal care of its residents and threatened to take action against them.
The activity director pointed out that his criticisms would be best directed at those who in charge of resident care. He finally stopped his tirade and apologized to the activity director. Not only did he not apologize to mother, he never even acknowledged her presence as he ranted and raved
My mother has next to no short term memory. She lives very much in the present. She has excellent hearing and is affected deeply by what she hears as she hears it. For her to be accused falsely of poor dental hygiene, and to hear accusations that would give her worries about the quality of care that she is receiving (which is excellent by the way) caused her to be upset and worried needlessly about her own safety at the hands of those entrusted to care for her.
Cleary Bench has no understanding of the damage caused by abusive verbal tirades and has given no consideration of the delicate state of mind that is often the reality in our elders today.
this so called doc has no business dealing with the public,m especially those who are vulnerable and unable to defend themselves against an "expert" in a white coat the a Dr. in front of his name.
This is not the first time that he has lunched verbal abusive assaults at Velley Care workers in front of the resident whom they brought in. This man needs to be stopped.
