I wouldn't recommend Designer, Dentistry & Smiles as a place to do business. My experience was horrible to say the least. I was charged $5,300 for sleep apnea services and in the end they didn't fix the issue. If I made a recommendation I would suggest going to one of the major hospitals and work with a pulmonologist. They will have a list of proven dentists they recommend for an appliance and Designer, Dentistry and Smiles isn’t on that list. In fact my dentist said her service is very expensive and that he makes them for $499 (multiple times cheaper) but doesn’t advertise it so ask your personal dentist too. My pulmonologist said it sounds like a “Cadillac” service big and expensive. They will also have continued follow-up which in the end Designer, Dentistry and Smile does not. They basically cut you loose with a good luck after the services. I am still above the recommended number apnea events per hour which they knew. They made a few adjustments that still couldn’t correct the issues and then service just fizzles out. In the beginning she seemed ambitious but each successive visit I am sure cuts profits and you feel like a burden and she hurries you out. They are basically only available Monday through Thursday. They say they are around on Friday but that’s not true 90% of the time. This is a medical issue and needs proper follow-up and continued care that a proper sleep doctor/pulmonologist can provide. I just don’t feel Designer, Dentistry and Smiles can provide these type of services properly and they definitely don’t understand how to file a medical claim properly. Many people wouldn’t be able to utilize their services because the expensive mandatory upfront full cost has to be paid first. Where a hospital will file the claim and only bill for what the insurance doesn’t pay including provider negotiated discounts not the other way around.

We had been going to this dentist for the past 12 years. Overall, the cleanings and other general services were good. As my children grew up, they strongly pushed the Myobrace program. Knowing my daughter would eventually need braces, we opted to try this program to help her. It did not help one bit. We had to drive 25 miles one way every month for a less than 5 minute appointment. We purchased a $500 metal wire to help with the straightening of teeth. Finally after a year of no progress, I saw two orthodontists for their opinion. They immediately wanted to get her started with an ortho plan (both places had the same plan). I was very discourage with DDS when I heard of the other treatment options. I decided to move our care to a place closer to our home and called and cancelled all upcoming appointments and no questions were asked by their staff. After 12 years, you would think they would have asked some type of follow up. Too bad. My new place I am going to actually offers some free services that DDS always changed for. Shop around!

Dr. Nicole was the worst customer service I have ever seen very rude and if it wasn't her way it was the wrong way. At the end didn't even say bye or anything walked out of the room mumbling under her breath. Will NEVER go back to this place and wouldn't recommend anyone else to either!!

They told my fiancé he needed $5,000 worth of stuff with no plans of running it though his health insurance. They signed him up for Care Credit and a $3,500 bill. We have been working hard to improve his credit and they did this before TRYING his insurance. We had to push to get them to submit it and it was APPROVED. We informed them of this and they STILL wouldn't submit it until he came to pick up the mouth piece, why? They wanted payment before they could order it but can't submit it to insurance? It makes no sense. Meanwhile we are making payments when we don't need to be. They don't care about helping their customers and he will not be returning for the throat surgery. As of yet we are still waiting for it to be submitted since it has been approved almost a MONTH ago. Update: They answered me on here but did not read that we did get it APPROVED through his insurance. We were told he needed to pick it up first (a week from getting the approval.) He picked it up two weeks ago and they still will not submit it. So THREE WEEKS from getting it approved we are still forced to make payments.

Awful customer service! The receptionist called me (Siera, not Joe) this morning to advise me they'd be charging me $150 as a late fee for cancelling. I cancelled yesterday, but I guess you have to advise them 48 hours in advance. Unfortunately, the weather got bad 24 hours in advance, not 48 (not so surprising that happens when you're in SD). The receptionist proceeded to give me a terrible time and advised me that the dentist I was seeing (also the owner I might add) got there just fine and lives outside of town as well. I guess since the owner of the business feels comfortable risking her life I should too!? I offered to schedule another time and they wanted me to come in later today. That's not possible for me when the time frame I budgeted for them has passed and I have an entire day of other obligations I cannot forget about. I would not want to go in later even if I was available anyway after being treated the way I was by the receptionist. Perhaps you should ask about options to come in later BEFORE you decide to be a b*** to your customer. Would never recommend them to anyone and thanks to FB, 600+ FB friends will know to do the same! It's apparent now too that I should have asked people on my FB their experiences with designer dentistry and smiles before I scheduled with them. Buyer Beware - DO NOT GO HERE If I could give them zero stars, I would. I have quite the tale for you. Continue reading if you care to find out the horrors of this establishment. *scroll to the end if you don’t care to know the back story Context: My family and I recently moved to the Sioux Falls area and needed a new dentist. The place that shall remain nameless, looked like a decent place. I book an appointment for my 6mo cleaning. All seemed fine, nice hygienist, and we figure out I have an abscess from a root canal I had done 10 years earlier. Dr. Z then consults me and says either pull the tooth or see if the endodontist can save it. I choose to see the endodontist (to which they referred me to). The endodontist thinks there is a 50/50 shot. I decide to do it. Keep in mind I already had a crown from a previous root canal. So, she drilled through said crown and felt pretty confident about the procedure. Referred me back to the place that shall remain nameless to get the crown filled in. So, I make my appointment. Dr. Z comes in and starts explaining to me how she is going to remove the crown and get pix of my tooth bla bla bla. And I question her with “why would you make me a new crown when you’re just filling in my current crown?” Her response “that’s what was on the schedule”. She told why I needed a new one and I said ok (I mean she’s the dentist, hello - uninformed consumer here!). They finish they procure and I go to check out. The front desk girl looks afraid. She asks me nervously “did you get a quote before you did this?”. To which I reply “no - and I’m not sure I want to hear what you’re about to tell me judging by your face”. $1,200. Twelve-hundred-dollars. One thousand two hundered dollars. Out of nowhere. No quote. No fee schedule. I explained to them how I never received any fee sheet or quote or anything. I came in that day expecting one thing and received something different. They asked me to pay in full, to which I then find out they hadn’t even run through insurance yet! Also, then told me if I had started with them that I would have been quoted or received a fee sheet. Ummm, I did start with you? I paid half (I could have paid all of it but didn’t for because of the principle...oh and they didn’t think to run through insurance before asking me to pay). Fast forward to bill coming in the mail. Final bill came out to $700+ I still owed. I give them a call 3x. Finally someone returns my call, but unfortunately, she is not there person to talk to about this, so she will pass my info the to right person. Fast forward 4 weeks. Still no return phone call. Finally, I call Dr. Z on her personal cell she gave me in her response to my initial complaint. No answer. She then calls me back but hangs up. I call her back - she accidentally called me. But musters up the courage to let me know she’s on vacay with her family and will have someone call me Monday - they’ve had some turnover. Then Brenda calls me. So now this is the 5th person (at least) in their office who’s attempting to understand the situation. She then proceeds to tell me that she will have to consult with the doc and questioned that I wanted more of a discount on the procedure than what they gave me for being in the cool insurance club. She consults with the owner who decides they’ve already discounted me enough and I need to pay the full amount. They discounted me because of my insurance, not because they messed up. I. Was. Livid. And I am a pretty level headed person. They then wrote me a break up letter (sad). Here’s the deal. I didn’t expect anything other than someone understanding and taking some responsibility for their part in this mess. I’m not sure why I had to pay the price for their mistake (turn over or not). They then asked me to apply for a credit card to pay off the balance - HA! I tried every avenue to get them to understand. Word of mouth is still the number one form of marketing, and believe me, I’ll be Marketing your business to everyone.

I'll start with saying I'm hesitant to review this, because I do in fact take the majority of the blame. However, I find it necessary for others to be aware of their policy, because I think it's incredibly unreasonable. My husband and I still had not found a dentist in town that we were comfortable with for us and our 2 year old son, so we decided to give DD&S a try. We took our son in for his first appointment in late July/August (cannot remember exact date) and were urged to schedule his next one at the same time, which we booked for January. When the time came, we forgot about the appointment. Entirely our fault and I do, in fact, feel terrible for spacing it as I know that this is a business and they make no money for no shows. However, when I received a bill in the mail stating that we owed $50 for missing our appointment, I was beyond irritated and bothered. First, maybe it is stated somewhere on their website and I missed it, but I was never informed of a $50 charge for missed appointments. I feel that is something that patients should be informed of. Secondly, what a horrible impression to make on your patients. My husband and I were both coming in for appointments and Invisalign consultations this month, but will definitely not be doing so now. Again, I'm very torn about writing this review because I do feel terrible about missing my son's appointment and the blame does lie on our own busy schedules and forgetful minds. However, mistakes do happen and we had the intention of rescheduling and continuing to use this dentist for our whole family, but I really feel that $50 is a pretty steep price to pay for forgetting an appointment scheduled so long ago. This is the first dentist's office I've seen this charge at (perhaps because I haven't missed one - maybe it's more common than I realize?), but I was mostly bothered that this charge wasn't made clear to us and that it's as expensive as it is. Not a dentist that I will recommend to anyone.

It was uncomfortable and unprofessional. If you have an issue with your staff you should probably address that in a staff meeting not while you're in my mouth.

If you have dentist office fear, come here! I have been with the team here at DDS for 12 years after not visiting ANY dentist for 6 years prior out of fear. When I moved to Sioux Falls and decided I HAD to go see the dentist, I read good things about them. And I found out for myself it is true. Absolutely amazing care and service. They have dealt with my fear, with my high gag reflex, my anxiety, my teeth. And I can honestly say, I enjoy going to the dentist now. The client is first; relationships are important. In all of it, I have appreciated Jenn S. helping me get my appointments scheduled...and even re-scheduled when conflicts arise. They are accommodating and skilled. An update to the response: (I am now married, and my maiden name is Hein, you may look me up in your patient records. ) I went to Designer Dentistry as a new patient in Sioux Falls. I had listened to their radio ads so I was familiar with the name. Working with Dr. Nicole, I had what she thought "may be a cavity" and said quote, "if it were MY teeth I would have it filled, you're too pretty for an ugly smile." This is an age old marketing technique. When I go to a healthcare provider, I expect them to give me their professional opinion, not use scare tactics and vanity to sell unnecessary procedures. They also told me I had the beginnings of periodontal disease and wouldn't give me a regular cleaning until I had a two stage "deep" cleaning. Which I must add they told me would cost around $200 total with my insurance. I did the first half of the cleaning which cost me over $300 with insurance. (I admit this is my fault for not consulting with my insurance company directly before having the procedure done). After consulting with a friend from college who is a dental hygienist, she told me at my age, and the fact that I regularly brush and floss, the chances of me having periodontal disease to the point to require the deep cleaning, would be little to none, she couldn't believe they recommended such an invasive procedure on the first visit. So, I elected to not do the other side of my mouth. Moral of the story, I spent $120 on a Sonicare, switched dentists, and my new dentist wasn't even able to tell which side of my mouth had the deep cleaning procedure done. It's not up to me who you choose as a dentist, but my experience was not a good one, I went somewhere else, and know I'm getting actual healthcare advise rather than sale ploys.

I have always been very loyal to my dentists in the past, however for a personal reason I decided that my son, Trenton and myself would switch from our Madison dentist to Designer Dentistry & Smiles. We did so about 2 years ago, we have been extremely happy. My son (9 years old) does not mind going to the dentist anymore. The staff especially Kelsie always has a smile on her face and like the rest of the team is very caring and helpful. They go above and beyond where my dentists in the past have not. After having my teeth filled I explained to the hygienist that they felt rough and chunky. I was told I could make an appointment to come back in. I had several fillings done in two appointments and they were very sloppy. Within a couple months one of the fillings fell out. I also recall the hygienist changing the tv channel from what I put it on. She was than very distracted watching tv during my cleaning. Majority of staff is unprofessional and doesn't preform quality work...from what I experienced.

I had an awesome experience. I had to have a cavity filled, I was dreading it. I had an impressive experience, Dr.Nichole & her team have a new hi tech laser technology to fix cavities and much more. No drilling and no numbing shots were used, I was in and out in 20 minutes. I couldn't believe it, it was very impressive. Worst customer service I have ever received from an owner (Dr. Nichole Cauwels) in my life. From the start her office failed to get a pre-auth from my medial provider..and has yet to make sure that the info has been submitted to my insurance. This was for an oral appliance with Dr. Whiteman. I have never been treated so badly from an owner, all she wanted to do was argue the point that she was correct. When you leave they will be sure to pressure you into paying your bill, even though you have insurance. Dr. Nichole is not worried about keeping customers happy at all. You may have had good dental service from her in the past, but if you have an insurance issue or other, you will find out otherwise how NON-helpful she will be toward you. Look lower in the reviews you will see others have also had this experience with this as well. CUSTOMER BEWARE!!! Also I see the owner replied. There was no issues on my insurance end, I was talking with them the whole time. It was Designer Dentistry which was the problem. I have never received this bad of service from a company I go to to get a service from them and have to pay them. Also I did not finally receive anything from my insurance company until 3 months after service because of Designer Dentistry.

Shady business practices. They assured me that my cleaning procedure would be covered by my insurance. It was not and I learned this when the bill came. My insurance company informed me the claim was submitted incorrectly by DD&S. After arguing about it on the phone with the office manager, they finally agreed to resubmit the claim. It went through properly this time, but was denied again. DD&S then forgot about that time (2 weeks prior?) when they told me the procedure would definitely be covered.

Wow, to say the least do not come here. Apparently this office likes to trick people into services under false pretenses of estimated insurance coverages and costs. I have been coming to this office for about 2 years because I always had a great experience with whatever hygienist I had. I recently switched my children to this office because the staff specifically told me they were in network with my insurance and to my knowledge all my costs were covered besides a small portion that I always paid. Well, I show up for an appointment for my toddler daughter's chipped tooth and the receptionist informs me that I have over a $400 balance and if I'd like to take care of it?! I had no idea that I owed anything. When I asked how could this happen, they told me that I have been accruing a balance for over a year! At no point in time, even the many times we were in for appointments, did anyone until now inform me that a balance was accruing. Apparently, they lied about being in network with my insurance and claimed that they didn't notify me of any balances because they thought my insurance would cover it! I was continually coming back and receiving services under false pretenses! If I was informed about my account, I could've paid it as it was accrued or found someone actually in my network. Instead, I receive a huge bill all at once. I even spoke with Dr. Nicole at the time asking if there's anything she could do to help, and she told me I was lucky they haven't charged me late fees and interest! This is the worst customer service and business acumen a dentist office could provide! My husband is active duty Air Force, which they know because I told them I was so confused about the balance since we have TriCare under him (still thinking we were in network before they explained they apparently never were). So... despite their deceptive accounting practices, the fact I'm standing there with 2 small children, and that my husband serves and has deployed for this country so she even has the ability to have her own practice, I still received a statement in the mail a week after this encounter with the full balance AND a late fee! Happy 4th of July, Dr. Nicole.... you're welcome!

I love the atmosphere of the whole facility, as it gives a very comfortable, relaxed feeling. The staff are all very friendly! My hygienist, Megan Bly, was very very kind and made the whole visit very relaxing. I would definitely recommend DDS!

My wife had the same problem as many others reported. She had the sleep study, which they claimed would be covered by insurance. Our deductible was already met for the year. We received a letter from insurance stating the claim was denied. After looking into it, they did not send in the claim for over 90 days, and did not have it authorized. Not to mention that Dr. Nicole was very rude to my wife in front of other customers and our children. Very seldom do I make horrible reviews, but I have need heard of such horrible customer service in the dental industry. We paid the sleep study bill out of pocket, just to get them off our back about the bill and will never return again.

This place doesn’t even deserve 1 star it’s a Nightmare that am still living in what I went through trusting Nicole to fix and straighten my teeth I had no insurance I paid in cash I paid over $30,000 to this lady My biggest regret in life when I came to this place I poured out my heart and soul to Nicole and her crew about having Perfectly straight teeth and a nice smile I felt Confident in I tried Invisalign’s And braces which I wore two years straight each and did not do much I saw one of the ladies at the office have Lumineers which I asked about and wanted them on every tooth I was in the moving process which I had to decline at the time but they kept texting me and even wanting to pay my ticket to come and get this work done as long as I would pay in cash I wish I save my texts so I can show it to all of you Instead I told her My house was getting sold and I had to come to SF anyways after I got them done I told her I was unhappy and she said once there in there on so taking them off would just damage my teeth even more and I told her do to my long distance appointments not to put me on no show list which she she ok and than I call once in and received a letter saying she can no longer see me because I missed a appointment it has been about two years ago I still cannot sleep over this this is a lot of money that I spend and will never get back my teeth look more awful than they were Oversized 2 of them fell off can still smile and no one want to take them off saying it would look ridiculous am soooooo unhappy with her work and her attitude she gave me so unprofessional greedy person she is
