My experience there gives me nightmares. I would write 3 paragraphs if I had to share my nightmare here! What a horrible experience. Stay away! For your safety and well being.

So I've just returned from the first dental visit I've had in 20 years... The hygienist and dentist both commented on the superior dental work I have in my mouth. Thank you students, your work has truly stood the test of time.

2 paid visits and 6 hours of exams and study before they will fix a broken tooth. Some deal. Pass.

THE STUDENTS HERE ARE EXCEPTIONAL. THEY ARE PROFESSIONAL AND EFFICIENT; CAREFULLY SUPERVISED BY TEACHING STAFF. THEY TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN THE RESULTS. THEY ARE ALSO HELPFUL WITH DISCUSSING THE COST OF TREATMENT OPTIONS, GIVING PRACTICAL OPTIONS FOR PATIENTS WITH LIMITED RESOURCES. I HAVE HAD A DENTAL PHOBIA SINCE A KID, I HAVE COME TO TRUST THIS PROVIDER COMPLETELY.

It is a wonderful place to get your teeth taking care of. Students are overly freindly, patient and work very hard to please their patients. Best of all it is more affordable than regular dentist. Everything can be done here for your teeth for a reasonable fee. The only set back is the front desk receptionist once you pass that everything else sweet moving forward during your appointment.

Went to oral surgeon yesterday with no insurance and paid $145 to talk to them. Was told to call tufts dental school and I did. I need a sinus lift and bone graft. I was told that I need a written referral from a dentist, I explained that I have no insurance and am paying cash. Great but still need a written referral. Then we can book a consultation, that is going to cost you $175. Wait I need to pay $145, then see a dentist at a cost of at least $150 to get a referral and pay another $175 just to see someone? Yep. Ok can you give me an idea how much it would typically cost for a sinus lift and bone graft, no sir you need to make an appointment. SO first off if anyone out there is wondering what is wrong with the medical and dental care in this country read the above, what I wondering about is this a school of dentistry so why do I need a referral and have to pay for a consultation. You are setting the bar for charging just to talk to a dentist and ask questions . As a school you should be ashamed of yourself. Not only that but read the reviews most of them are awful

Good doctors and good trainees, they explain everything with details, it might take some time to complete a work since they are students but still everyone is trained well!

I felt swindled after going here. I went in for a toothache, waited a decent amount of time to be seen, and when i was i was welcomed by a nice student, around my age. She was great, i like her. everything else was just a hassle. i waited a decent amount of time, walked around the place. they treated the tooth, but i needed a root canal. I couldn't at the time afford it. so i just settled for a pulplotomy. I didn't have dental insurance either. So i leave. Months later, i get calls about how i need to call them back, they never say why. which i didn't plan on going back its too far and i need to figure out insurance first. Come to find out right before my account goes to collections that i needed to pay an extra 80 bucks. Which confused me, they told me that i had to pay everything up front before a procedure. they gave me the cost, paid it, they gave me an itemized bill saying the cost, and i asked, "is this it?" to which they confirmed, "yes." before i leave i ask again is everything all set, and they yet again confirm. So where did that extra 80 come from? So, i call the guy who takes care of bills. He was a bit short with me as i tried to explain i don't know where this bill came from. and that i confirmed with the front desk about my bill to which he said "doesn't matter." he starts listing off my charges but refuses to explain what they are for. unfortunately, i lost my itemized statement and just paid the 80 to get it over with. I don't mind paying, but damn, I don't like surprise charges with 0 explanation on what they were even for! especially when this is a place where you have to pay everything up front. it made no sense! However, i had no proof on my end. My first lesson on keeping your itemized statements close. Make sure you find out what exactly you are being charged with, and why, get your itemized statement and file them away.

they do an excellent job, but you are gonna wait a long time before they get to you, so be prepared to stay there all day I had multiple teeth pulled and I would recommend being put to sleep. I woke up with no pain and am still pain free. I would recommend Tufts. The staff is very professional.

Dr. Swaroop was not informative about exactly what he was going to do. I had a very invasive procedure. I have since received 2 opinions from oral surgeons that said they would not and have not ever done that procedure. I now do not have enough jaw bone to have an implant. I ended up with an infection and feel the instruments they used were not sterile. I only wanted one implant where a tooth was just pulled, not two implants. No communication on what the patient wanted. I told him I did not want two implants and that I just needed one tooth to chew on that side. I am still having a hard time trying to get a partial denture for that side because of a lack of jaw bone.

TUFTS HAS GONE WAY DOWN HILL...IN THE LAST 20 YEARS THEY HAD ARRANGED A DOUBLE SESSION FOR A DEEP CLEANING AFTER COMPLETING A FINAL TREATMENT PLAN..AND XRAYS I HAD NO FURTHER WORK TO DO...WELL ...OUT COMES THE LITTLE BROWN LIAR IN A LAB COAT... POSING AS SOMEONE WHO DICTATES POLICY...AND TELLS US..."YOU NEED PERIO" AND CANCELS MY CLEANING THIS GENDERLESS, UNNAMED, BARELY ABLE TO SPEAK ENGLISH EGO-MANIAC....WASTED MY ENTIRE DAY AS WELL AS THE THREE PRIOR APPOINTMENTS...SO THEY COULD SQUEEZE MONEY OUT OF ME FOR UNNEEDED PERIO TREATMENTS...AND TO JUSTIFY IT ... SHE LIED AFTER I COMPLAINED....THEY COVERED IT UP AND TOLD ME I WAS NO LONGER A PATIENT.... DONT TRUST THESE PEOPLE..THEY ARE LIARS MORE THIRD WHOLD...LITTLE NEO-NAZI SOLIALISTS..RUINING AMERICA...

I've been a patient at the Periodontics Department, the Department of Oral Medicine, and the TMJ clinic at Tufts School of Dental Medicine starting in 2003. I've never been a patient of the General Dentistry Department. I have insurance and so I don't go to Tufts to save money. I go to Tufts because I feel I get superior care. I feel that clinicians at Tufts have the time to do a more thorough job. In the past I have had private dentists do unnecessary work on my teeth. At Tufts they seem conservative and cautious about that. In the past some of my private dentists have failed to notice obvious problems with my teeth and have misinformed me. At Tufts they seem very careful to diagnose everything completely. Both students and supervising doctors have always taken all the time necessary to answer my questions to my satisfaction. I've been a patient at a number of private dental practices, a patient at Tufts, and also at 2 other dental schools. Whenever I have the option, I always choose the dental school over the private practice and I've always had great results. But dental schools are not for everyone. You will spend a lot more time travelling, waiting, and you will go to more appointments to get the same work done. Compared to other schools, Tufts is a very large operation. It can seem a little impersonal at times. Some of the departments handle large numbers of patients. Learning to navigate the appointment, insurance and billing system can be a challenge for new patients. The billing aspect of the Tufts Dental School has been frustrating for me at times. But I've learned to keep extensive records of all my interactions and to seek answers whenever I have any doubt. I've had no problems since I started doing that. Some of the reviewers felt the clerical staff were unpleasant. I have found most of the clerical staff have been very competent . They have demanding jobs and they are often quite busy. So sometimes they might not "hold your hand". I try to have a little sympathy for them. I don't think any of the students are there to figure out what they want to do in life. I think they are already very clear on that Compared to other schools, Tufts tuition is very high. Acceptance is very competitive. All students seem serious and committed to making successes of themselves in dental medicine. Students working on me have consulted with their supervising doctors before working on me and their work has been evaluated when done. I don't think anyone there is learning by "trial and error". Everyone seems to practice thorough sterile procedure. There seem to be a lot of safety and hygiene policies in place. Clinicians wear lots of gloves and masks. There always seems to be a lot of hand sanitizer available for staff and patients. Sterile procedure is a simple thing to get right and I think many medical providers fail to do so. I think Tufts does a good job with it. The student assigned to care for you will eventually graduate and you will be assigned to a new student provider. I've had many different instructors supervising my student providers. But Tufts seems to have a good computer record keeping system and procedures and I feel the continuity and consistency of my care has been well coordinated by the different providers. I've always been able to get a parking spot at the parking deck. I travel from Framingham. I always make my appointments for the middle of the day to avoid rush hour. I always allow at least 75 minutes travel time. Be nicer than you have to be, listen carefully, ask questions of both your student dentist and the instructors until you understand fully. Keep records, arrive early, and bring something to occupy your time. You will find a lot of wonderful clinicians who care deeply, who are excited about what they are doing, who work together as a team, and who want the same thing you do, superior quality dental care.

I've been seeing Dr. Lytle at MCA (now BU Affiliated Physicians) for 4 years now. It's always pleasant to go in for a visit (as pleasant as a doctor's appointment can be), whether it's planned or unplanned. The front desk is constantly busy and it can take a short wait before they get to you, but don't mistake that for rudeness.

Joe Salvani was the doctoral student that I was assigned to. I had never been to Tufts Dental Clinic. I was very impressed by the friendliness and enthusiasm of the students. Joe was kind, concerned about my overall comfort, very knowledgeable and willing to explain every procedure in detail to me. He was totally instrumental in putting me at ease. It was wonderful to have the same individual doing all aspects of dentistry; whether it was periodontal, prosthodontal, or endodontal. I didn't have to worry about going to another section of the clinic or to adjusting to another doctoral student. I had complete confidence in the dental work at the clinic because the doctors, in the various specialties, were constantly checking the work to insure accuracy. Thank you Tufts for the opportunity to have some badly needed dental work done at a very reasonable price.

Absolutely a great place to go. I went there yesterday and was seen almost immediately. The staff was extremely nice and friendly. The student that pulled my tooth was wicked cool and in all honesty, was a cutie. She made getting a tooth pulled not seem like pulling teeth. She was friendly, funny and made sure I was comfortable the whole time. I have only ever had my wisdom teeth pulled and that was 15 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday only because I can remember the feeling of my teeth getting ripped out even though I was numbed up AND given the gas. Yesterday I was only numbed up and I never felt the tooth come out! I hope that when she graduates she opens her own practice because I definitely want to be a paitent of hers. But for now, if I ever have another problem, I am sure as hell going back to Tufts for help. You guys were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

Best place for your kids braces. Never pay what your regular ortho charged, go to Tufts. I was skeptical at the beginning but what a pleasant surprise. From receptionist to the doctors. Great place!, great facility, so modern and clean. The residents are wonderful. Dr.Hynes is the best! So gentle, very knowledgeable and the rest of the team from faculty to students - just awesome! Strongly reccomend. Too bad I had to pay for my older son's braces almost double the price.

I have been a patient for almost 3 years trying to complete my implant process. I have paid thousands of dollars. I have had to come back several times because i has not been right, The office does not communicate or answer there phone. Each time i go the office manages to find more money I owe. After every visit I always paid what I owed. I have gone through 3 doctors to complete this process. Im at my final stage and have been back and forth several times I need so much work done, but due to the lack of communication I will not return after this!

Newton Sewing Studio

I HATE this place. I needed a root canal back in October. It's May now and I just went for my 14th appointment. Keep in mind that to get the root canal you have to suffer through anything else they deem necessary. I had one additional cavity and a small chip on a front tooth both had to be done first. Today I went for another cleaning that "had" to be done and after all the excessive waiting for instructors to check off procedures we didn't even get to the cleaning. Are you kidding me? 3 hours isn't enough time to get some teeth cleaned?? I used to like going to the dentist, now I have nightmares, really bad ones. Thanks Tufts, you're so awesome! I still have two appointments (multiply that by 3) before the end of this hell but at this point I'm considering just cutting my losses and getting this fixed by a real dentist. I've been living with most of my tooth missing for so long now. I feel like crying. Don't go here, just don't. If you don't believe me then read some more reviews. They all sound spot on, I wish I had read here first.

Left my private dentist to come to tufts and tufts did a way better job. Appointments aren’t rushed, so give yourself plenty of time. Tufts dental school really does a thorough exam and takes the time to explain everything they’re doing with their complete team of experts.

mary flaherty

very dissatified with the care recieved at this university...i will say the first student i had was excellent but she graduated and i was assigned a new student who did not care about my dental care as much as he cared about his requirements. he was not educated on how long other processes take in other departments and as a result the game plan on me changed several times resulting in my loss of insurance allowances for that calendar year. as the end of year came and the crowns had to be resent out and did not come back in time for placement. I was also told by the new student following this one (he was graduating now) that the repost i had upstairs did a bad job on my tooth...(this information was given to me without my even asking about tooth). I was always seen by the instructor on staff each visit which all had different opinions on the care to be provided ... so if you are lucky enough to get a good student you will do well, but if you are not, you are taking the chance of damage instead of good dental care.

Susan Abrams

I would have put all of this information on Tufts patient feedback site or filled it out as a follow-up patient care questionnaire, but neither seems to exist. As a teaching institution, this seems strange. As their website says, you get high quality care at Tufts. And yes, the number of appointments that are required are tough but a small price to pay for their reasonable rates. I have to keep in mind, though, that I am basically a practice dummy and that my mouth is the student dentist's classwork. This has meant that patient communication and "chair side" manner is often lacking. Sometimes I go to appointments not knowing what is going to be done. Sometimes procedures that were done the previous appointment are done again with no clear explanation. I think I got my teeth cleaned 4 times in 4 separate appointments. Clearly cleaning is important but it seemed inexplicable (and wasn't explained) why 4 appointments were needed. Mistakes like broken molds require another visit that puts off treatment for a month or so. Crowns may or may not be done (which could happen for any dental procedure) but there seems to be no system for calling patients to let them know that the appointment should be cancelled for a later date). Trying to confirm or cancel an appointment is almost impossible on their phone system. Although the students who have worked on my mouth are very nice individuals and are clearly well-trained and competent, I have often wished that they would communicate better what work they are doing as they are doing it and communicate what the next steps will be in a more collaborative manner. I guess what I am saying is that I wished I was treated more like a person with a dental condition than a dental condition that happens to be attached to a person. Finally, beware the dragon at the front desk. It's her job to collect money, but asking for print outs of procedures performed, charges made and paid, and any insurance payment is met with a rare form of hostility that is magnificent in its passive aggressiveness. Again, however, Tufts is quality care at a reasonable cost.

Monica D.

Well I can say that I had my first visit with this place and it was fast, easy, and the soon to become doctors explained everything to me without attitude or rudness I will be coming again. from the Women at the front desk to the Doctors I had a good experience here the only reason I gave 3 stars its because I havnt got anything pulled out jet so can talk unon a non experience. But everything else was awesome.

I have been coming to Tufts for a long time. I highly recommended them to all in need of a comprehensive and economic dental work.

When I found out I had to have my wisdom teeth out, I went to a private practice down the road from where I live in Vermont. I heard great things about them and they were true; they were very kind and helpful. The consult showed all four teeth were impacted and only one was slightly erupted. They set the date for January 9th and the price at $3,000(!!!). I have no dental insurance yet this seemed very steep. I looked into the waiver from the state and it would be months before I could even be seen by the only oral surgeon in the area who accepted the waiver. That's when I decided to look into Tufts. My aunt had work done there and said they were phenomenal. I was a little worried about students working on my teeth, being a student myself, but it would be worth the two hour drive if it was cheaper. They reccommend being there at 7am to sign in for the 9am clinic. I got there at 8:30am and was seen promptly at 9. The student that saw me was great and asked all the preliminary questions before the teacher came in and checked all his work over. After the formalities of the clinic, I was brought up to oral surgery. The student that saw me was just as awesome. We went through much of what I had already been asked and a new teacher came forward. Just by looking around at the teachers, one can tell they are all very experienced and love what they do. This particular one made sure to allow the student to lead while stepping in with things she forgot. I was given way more information about the surgery then I had been told by the private practice doctor. The Tufts teacher also noticed I had a slight infection, which went unnoticed in Vermont! I was there for a total of three hours, with no more than 30 minutes of waiting at a time. My appointment is set for January 8th (even though I went two weeks later than my first consultation!) and the price is $1,300!! I will have the same anesthesia by IV as the private practice. Everything about my trip was completely worth my time and I recommend anybody who is skeptical to trust this hospital! Knowing that you are assisting in the teaching of future dentists and surgeons only sweetens the deal!

Under NO circumstances should you get work done at Tufts. Despite what they say, there is NO real guidance from a professional other than rushing around granting student a 'card swipe' to continue working. I recently went to a real dentist to fix the mistakes that Tufts made and had a great experience (Weymouth Dental). The actual dentist was cheaper than Tufts and took 15 min to do the work. Tufts took 9 horrific visits - couldn't get me numb, constantly drilling while I still had feeling, stopping and leaving me with work halfway finished because they are only allowed to work in the window that they have - if it's not done, you walk away and schedule again to finish. If you enjoy being stabbed by two broken syringes about 12 times (in one visit), then this is the place for you! Everyone I dealt with was nasty or incompetent. They refused to take responsibility for the damages they caused, but eventually promised to send a check to reimburse me, which I never received... save yourself pain, time, and money and just go to a professional the first time!

Tufts dental school really does a thorough exam and takes the time to explain everything they’re doing with their complete team of experts.

very dissatified with the care recieved at this university...i will say the first student i had was excellent but she graduated and i was assigned a new student who did not care about my dental care as much as he cared about his requirements. he was not educated on how long other processes take in other departments and as a result the game plan on me changed several times resulting in my loss of insurance allowances for that calendar year. as the end of year came and the crowns had to be resent out and did not come back in time for placement.

Found someone there who is extremely knowledgeable about TMJ and offers excellent treatment.

Can't get any information, or even basic politeness from anyone on any of the phones the transferred me to. Dental emergency? TUFTS WILL NOT HELP YOU. If you can't afford anywhere else, you're better off asking YouTube to teach you to drain an abcess and pull a tooth.

It's the worst dentist school ever , they just want want to take your money and then they don't care about you , I was there 4 months ago they said that I have a severe gum disease ,I started my treatment and I paid them $700 and they started the treatment , first I started with an indian dentist he made me feel pain all the time of cleaning and then he said he will transfer me to a saudian girl to finish the treatment with her , she finish the cleaning and she said she will call me after 3 weeks to resechudele an appointment and save what we can save but they didn't call me at all ,even if they know I have a very bad gum disease and I can start losting my teeth any time.

I have been under care at Tufts Dental School since Feb. I went in for a partial. I have been told numerous times now why I don't yet have my partia,l but none of these senarios make sense, and I still don't have my partial. The young woman who is working with me called yesterday stating that I should not keep today's appointment because she needs to talk to her supervisor about me. My last appointment was May 10th., and they were going to call me when my partial was back from the lab. No call. I called them some time ago for today's appointment which is now cancelled. Now I am teaching a class, and I have gaping holes on either side of my canines.

Horrible time with dental student who called to cancel the day of the appointment to reschedule several times. I asked to speak with her supervisor but never received a call. Even the person at the appointment desk tried to help but the process dragged on for months and they finally reassigned me another student and had the audacity to send me a letter notifying me of the importance of keeping up with my dental appointments. Not professional.

Horrible experience with my wife. Totally unprofessional staff who half of them working there cannot speak or understand English. My wife is Asian but has lived in the United States for over 25 years and has a high position with a very well-known fortune 500 Insurance company. She was referred to Tufts based on a referral from our local dentist for a second opinion for dental implants with intentions of possibly obtaining a lower cost due to this place being a training school for upcoming dental professionals. Upon arrival at Tufts, the staff immediately assumed she was unable to speak or understand English. Ignorance from the start! She was treated as though they that she was there for free care which it appears, they do much of that there based on what I personally seen. Great that they offer this type of service, but not everyone who goes in there is coming in for free dental work. Multiple staff that my wife encountered asked if she understood English even though half of them themselves could not speak English. Very degrading and obvious sterotyping from staff including shockingly by the actual dentist. My wife witnessed what appeared to be gossip among staff about patients being treated or waiting to be. Unfortunatly we could not understand what they are laughing about amongst one another because again most of them do not speak English but yet ask patients if they can? Unprofessionallism at it's best on display at this dump. When finally meeting the dentist who we thought for sure would make our experience so far a little bit more pleasant. No way! Same poor unprofessionalism! From the actual dentist mind you! The funny part..... After this dentist at Tufts finds out who my wife was and that she was there based on a referral from a prior student now with his own successful practice, referring for possible implants and not free care, she attempted to backtrack her initial poor attitude by building rapport as best she could. Again, ignorance and unprofessionalism at it's best! It was a little to late by that time. My wife already made her decision that her dental needs we're well beyond the scope of this fly by night clinic. Needless to say, we we're expecting a professional exam, and professional treatment as well as follow up from a professional staff based on the referral. What an embarrassing and truly shameful set of circumstances from a well known college like Tufts. They should be embarrassed to have unprofessional people like this representing their school. Maybe the school itself should not be a reflection on this dental training area but it is certainly not a good impression at all. We will be sharing our horrendous experience with our personal dentist with the hope he refrains from referring anybody else to go to tufts in order to maintain his own reputation. That would be in his best interest now that he is practicing privately. What a complete waste of time visiting this place. Even if the dental procedure my wife needs would be thousands less here, we would rather pay $40000 more for services from a more reputable specialist who at least can give us some assurance that the work will be done correctly and safe in a clean professional work environment with employees who do not sterotype patients and remember that we are why they are in business. Dental providers are a dime a dozen so professionalism is a must. Not just in this business but every business.
