Sabrina was great, and Dr Covington is the best

This place is fine. Staff is friendly, they do a good job. All dentists are starting to get pushy with whitening, fluoride, and cosmetic products to pad their bottom lines. Dental Care of Columbia is not in-your-face about it. It's a shame, but that's where we are these days.

I've been going to this office for 6 or so years now. This office is VERY thorough. Yes, they do try to sell things to you because they are a business, but they don't give you any hassle when you turn them down. For me, they always try to sell me sealants, even though I haven't had a cavity since I was 7 - proof that they've never told me I had a cavity when I didn't, or tried to make some work/treatment seem dire that wasn't. The staff is very friendly, and they remember who you are. My visits are always brief, about a half hour from the time I walk through the door until I leave. To the person who complained about this dentist taking x-rays even though they no longer had wisdom teeth: you still need x-rays even if you no longer have wisdom teeth. X-rays find cavities between the teeth, bone problems and other issues not related to the presence of wisdom teeth. Most insurance plans cover annual x-rays for that reason. Unfortunately, just because something isn't covered by insurance, like oral cancer screenings, doesn't mean you don't need it, and it doesn't make this place a rip off for recommending them.

I went to this dentist out of desperation. My initial call to them was fantastic, I explained that I didn't have insurance and new the area and asked if they were accepting new patients. They said yes of course and I explained that I felt like my filling wedged down in between my teeth when I was eating the previous day and I was in extreme pain and felt as if someone took a bat to the mouth. The lady whom I was speaking with seemed concerned and even put me on hold to see if she could squeeze me in earlier than their next appt slot, which happened to be way later in the day. I showed up to the appt on time and was taking back after filling out the needed paperwork. I was taken to the back to be seen...k cool so far so good...so I thought... The person who was taking my x rays seemed nice enough, but also seemed like it was his first day. He asked me what tooth I was having the problem with etc, of course I told him and showed him. Now after 10 attempts and 3 technicians later they finally got a good x ray of my tooth. Now the dentist comes back and takes a look at my x rays and asks what tooth do I have problem with because he didn't see anything wrong. So again I pointed to the problem, the only tooth in my mouth with a silver filling. The doctor responsed that his help, yeah I was alarmed by that word as well, took pictures of the wrong tooth. So now we are onto 5 more attempts and 2 technicians later to get a good x ray. The doctor comes back in and says oh yes I see you need a crown and root canal and list some other stuff but don't worry we will get you out of pain. In comes a lady to go over pricing, $3400!!! I said oh wow...that's a lot but if I need it I need it...but I said what are some other options because I can't afford that right now. She went over financing etc and all this stuff. Finally she agreed to do a in office payment plan. But the way it was put to me was "how much can you give us right now"...I was asked this question several times. The visit was coming off more like a dirty car salesman business, not caring about a client in pain. I left the office in pain, with a scheduled appt for later on the week. But my gut didn't feel right. I reached out to a family friend that is a dentist and informed me of things that should have happened. I should have been prescribed a pain medicine and antibiotic to clear up the infection before a root canal and that there are other options than the ones given. When I reached out to the office to ask to be prescribed at least an antibiotic before my appt, they informed me, that if the doctor thought I needed it he would have done it. Great customer service, btw! Yes, I am being quite sarcastic. Thank goodness I trusted my gut to seek a second opinion or I would have been getting possible major work done for a ridiculous price that isn't even needed. Trust me, watch yourself with this office.

Since my insurance changed I could not see my the dentist who I have been going to over 10 years. I was looking for a new dentist to go to. When I found a dentist in my area he literally was trying to rip me off for getting a crown by charging me $1800 dollars for 1 tooth with insurance included. When I saw dental care of Columbia I was a bit hesitant after my last experience and i also needed a second opinion so I made a appointment to see dr.covington in July and hands down she went over exactly what I needed to get done and her staff is amazing. I finally got my new crown yesterday and her staff helped me getting my X-ray yesterday from my previous dentist that I saw back in June. Thank you so much dental care of Columbia and I cannot wait to see you guys again.

I’ve been seen a couple times this week at this Dentists office and I’m so so happy with my experiences. The receptionists are professional and friendly, the techs are prompt and my dentist Ryan truly makes the visits a lot less daunting by being approachable, knowledgeable and patient. I had to get a root canal(which I’ve had before) and was a little uneasy about it because of past experiences at other places, but his approach was to get my nerves calmed by talking me through it, teaching me about the process, making sure I felt comfortable before and during the procedure —and injecting some nuggets of humor! I really liked how confident he was in his work after he was finished, and for my follow up visit he made sure to ask how I was feeling and if I had any pain anywhere. I was told that this office is under new management and has been for the past couple months and I definitely came in at the right time. It’s a small office with a small town feel where people actually care that you have a need for treatment. Another big plus is that they work with every financial situation no matter the insurance (or lack there of). I’m paying out of pocket for my visits, but don’t get treated any differently than anyone else because of it —unlike other places I’ve been to. They go over all of they payment options and really make sure you understand everything before you sign any forms. I will definitely become a regular at this office for check ups/exams and I’m very pleased to spread the word about them.

Convenient scheduling, good communications, and all the dentists and staff are great. I have a couple of special requirements and they've been great at working with those.

DCoC seemed like a great place. Everyone was knowledgeable and nice. I got a thorough checkup. They treated me like a valued client and not the groupon user that I was. I will most likely be back.

Jennifer Matthews

The staff is very friendly and efficient. I have never been pressured to buy treatments I do not need. I have never had a cavity or braces and they continue to take good care of my oral health.

The staff was great! I came in for my first cleaning with this practice and the business assistant really did an amazing job of making me feel welcome and going over finances with me. They were very nice and easy to talk to about my treatment. Dr. Covington and the hygienist I saw (Dani) had great bedside manners, and went over everything with me so that I understood what they were doing and why. The hygienist was very gentle and caring. Dr. Covington also made sure I was comfortable at all times and didn’t force any procedures on me, and actually told me I didn’t need certain work! She made me feel that she had my best interests at heart. A+++ across the board!

Ivan Waldman

Extremely disappointed in the entire practice. This afternoon was my initial office visit to this practice as I was switching from my previous dentist in Silver Spring, to one in Columbia which is significantly closer to my home now that I no longer work at the NIH in Bethesda. The appointment started over 30 minutes late, and after Chrystal Covington, DDS informed me that I needed a crown, not a filling as my previous dentist had recommended she had one of the office staff contact my insurance company and prepare an estimate for the work. It was for 3 times the amount I have ever paid for this type of work. When I questioned the cost the assistant told me that she had checked with the insurance company that since the crown was in the back of my mouth they had downgraded the material that would approve so much of it was not covered. That made no sense to me and I asked for a copy of the estimate to take with me so I could contact the insurance company myself. They refused to provide me with a copy without my signing a document that indicated I would pay the full price indicated even though I wasn't sure I would have the procedure. The insurance company told me they were absolutely wrong and even called the practice while I was on the phone to inform them of that. To say that I am highly disappointed and also suspicious of the ethics of the entire practice is an understatement. I would not recommend this practice to anyone.

Had to write a review about Dr Ryan and the staff here at Dental Care of Columbia. I was so impressed and satisfied with the care provided for my oral health. Dr Ryan and staff is a shinning testament to how the care should be provided at any Dental office. The experience was excellent and I thank the excellent team for the care they provided.

I use the promotion to get a cleaning done. After the X-Ray's were taken I was told I had multiple cavities and needed a crown for 1300.00. I went to another dentist for a second opinion, I was told I need a crown for one tooth only. Howard county dental program will do a crown for 800.00. Needless to say be cautious of promotions.

I called and told them I was having a lot of pain in the left side of my face. They were able to see me and set up a root canal within 2 days. Dr. Moon was great and was able to do some other work on another tooth that was right by the tooth I needed a root canal on (so I wouldn't have to come back and go through the whole numbing process again). Dr. Moon called to check on me the day after to make sure everything was going ok. I told him I was still having a good amount of pain and he had me to come back in that day. He made some adjustments to my temperary crown which took most of my pain away. I have been coming to Columbia Dental for years and they have always taken good care of me. I know that some of the costs are a little higher than what some other places charge and what insurance covers but that is because the quality of products they use are better. In the long run it will last longer which is something I like.

I have been a patient of Dr. Covington for about seven years. I highly recommend her and her team. They are professional, courteous, caring and always upbeat. I initially choose Dr. Covington because I worked in Columbia and enjoyed the convenience of being seen at 7:00am before starting my work day. Worst Experience Ever! FRAUD WARNING! Never go to Dental Care of Columbia ... avoid what happened to me and another reviewer on Google. The staff told me that they accepted my insurance and that my regular cleaning would be completely covered ... so I came in for a cleaning and left the office paying nothing. A few months later, they billed me $250 for a regular cleaning and claimed that they do not accept my insurance. When I asked what happened, they had no answer at all for me. They just kept insisting that I owe them the money (which is a lot for a regular cleaning ... which was mediocre at best). They made no attempt to explain their mistake or correct it. I had no choice but to pay them the $250. 1) I want my money back. 2) I don't want this to happen to anybody else. 3) If there was a rating less than 1 star, I would use it here.

Horrible - waited so long sitting in the dental chair & was never told attending dentist (assumed only 1 at that office) was back up & running late with other patients. Well, I understand but a simple courtesy may have do the trick telling me what's going on & not sitting there waiting & waiting & waiting...it took me just over an hour to say "intolerable" & walk out. I will NOT go back & never recommend this dental office to anyone...simply HORRIBLE!

Excellent care provided by the dentist a d her staff. Had a temporary crown put on and throughout the procedure was asked about my comfort and pain level. It went smooth with accommodations for catching dental debris and adjusting my jaw position. I was impressed with the high level of care. Dr. C called me herself the next day to check on my progress! I highly recommend this practice.

1. We signed up for this this dental office because they were on the approved list of our dental insurance. (meaning they accept what our insurance pays, meaning no additional out of pocket for us) 2. We take our daughter in and she needs filling, no problem, we get them done. And we ask before we leave, "what is our portion to pay in full" answer: $63. Done! Paid! $63.00. 3. We leave and 5 months later get a bill for $126...4. Even after a 3 way call with the insurance these guys will not accept the insurance(network provider) assignment of $364.(which the insurance already paid them..) uh uh no sir they want the other $126.. they feel they deserve, made repeatedly clear by the office manager who just keeps saying, "you pay pay". after an hour or two, a person is losing money so you do essentially pay the extort, I guess she is right ... Ethical professionals are very unfortunately a dying(fast) breed in this country. Please do not reward this behavior. and the other similar experiences above. There are many many better choices in the area.

During my recent visit on November 16, 2018 I went in for a repair on crown &bridge work. Dr. Knight is replacing dental work that was defective on my right side. However, on the oppsosite I needed additional work, and I asked his assistant MJ to tell the front desk that I needed a pre- estimate and she said okay. No one from the front desk stopped by to talk to me and when I got to the front desk I was slapped with a 1700.00 bill. When I asked the front desk personnel why she didn't bring me anything, she said don't say anything to his assistant or I will get in trouble. Needless to say she was resigning from her position in a few days so why should she care what I owe. I have called the office several times and no one can seem to follow up with me, which is very unprofessional. I will be leaving this dental practice as soon as my crown / bridge work is delivered. I have been a patient here since 2011 and have been misappointed numerous times for wrong procedures. Their system is broken and they need a lot of training. K. Barley

Nothing but great things to say. On time, kind, compassionate, clearly competent. My dental hygienist was spectacular, and Dr Covington was wonderful. I am a physician and will be referring my family and patients to them.

Went here for about two years. Initially saw Dr. Saad, no issues. Saw Dr. Covington after Dr. Saad left. She was always good and like other reviews say she would suggest and recommend different products, but when I wasn't interested I never felt pressured. The reason for 2 stars is because on my most recent visit Dr. Covington had changed her hours so I saw Dr. Moon. After telling me I took very good care of my teeth, he then told me I had a cracked in one tooth and would need a crown. I was very suspicious of this as no dentist had ever mentioned any issues with this tooth before, and I had no pain or other symptoms. I went and got a second opinion from another dentist recommended to me. He said my tooth was absolutely not cracked and that even if I had asked him to put on a crown on my tooth he would have declined. It is a shame that a dentist would recommend unneeded dental work on a healthy tooth just to increase his bottomline! Be a savvy consumer if you choose to go here.

I hesitate to give a two-star review, but ultimately, Dr. Moon's bedside manner was appalling. My wife went in because of a chipped tooth. She has a heart condition and anxiety. The dentist would not give treatment without clearance from the cardiologist, and proceeded to tell her several times that it was "because you might have a stroke." I'm sorry, are you also a cardiologist? Why would you tell someone with anxiety that they might have a stroke? If you can get around that problem, other things to know: (a) the office and suite are not handicap accessible; (b) Dr. Saad no longer is with the practice; (c) the receptionist is pleasant and helpful (the reason for two stars, not one). Regarding other bad reviews about finances, my experience in this regard with this practice was excellent. The receptionist called the insurance, navigated their infuriating voice prompts, and I could overhear her patiently getting all the work approved and negotiated. She was really thorough in this regard. I suggest to anyone getting dental work, here or otherwise, always make sure your coverage handles whatever is needed, and insist on an estimate specific to your coverage before proceeding.

TLDR - high priced, pressure of services, continues to spam your email inbox years after leaving them and unsubscribing. Interesting to see other reviews on here, years after having switched dentists. Wish they had been there before when I looked for a dentist up here. I am sorry I did leave my review sooner. I think my issues fall in line with whats been said. The biggest issues I had were pricing, acceptance of insurance, pressuring of extra services, and unstoppable spam emails. Note that I had been a customer maybe 5-6 years ago. Every visit, while the hygienists were nice, the appointments never started on time and since for whatever reason, they didn't accept BCBS for my bi-annual basic cleanings (which should have been fully or near-fully covered), I never stepped out of there without paying $300+. I let this happen a few times and then followed my gut and found a highly-rated dentist office that did accept insurance after reviewing other dentists online. Do your homework before settling on a place that is closest to where you live. Maryland Family Dentistry is my new place, despite it being much further away (I since moved away from Columbia). Hygienists there are also excellent and the cleanings I get are covered by my basic insurance, which was not the case here. Saved hundreds of dollars per visit and there has been no pressure for extra services. Also, do NOT give them your real email address, as no matter how many times you ask to be removed from their list, you still get emails, even many years later. I "unsubscribed" again today, and will review federal and state laws on mailing lists if I get another one before seeking counsel. And now you can guess what sparked me to finally give my honest opinion, years after having been a client here? Yup, another spam email that broke the camel's back.

I have always had a good experience at this dentist office. Always polite and professional. (As mentioned in another review) Yes, they recommend you get your teeth sealed, and while I too have never had a cavity to date, I feel that the sealants are a wise investment in your dental health. I have recommended this practice to family and friends.

Paige Whipple

Wish I could give 0 stars, but will give 1 because 1. I have to and 2. the hygienist was nice. But of course she was, because she was trying to sell me a $400 whitening treatment, a special prescription mouth guard (because OTC ones don't work, of course), and fluoride and cancer screening options that weren't covered by my insurance. They also took x-rays of my wisdom teeth-- even though I had them removed-- to "make sure they still aren't there." WHAT?! Why don't you just say that you want the insurance money because there was literally ZERO reason to do an x-ray to check for teeth that have been removed for years. The dental hygienist said I had barely any plaque and that my dental hygiene looked fantastic, then when the dentist came in she said I had 12 cavities. It would be more than $1000 to fill all of the so-called cavities. LOL- no. I was so mad that I had wasted more than 2 hours in that office. I went to another dentist for a second opinion and was told that I have 3 cavities between two teeth, and "certainly not anywhere close to 12 cavities." The second dentist prescribed a special toothpaste that will fix any decaying enamel on its own, instead of paying hundreds of dollars to drill into my teeth. These people are out of their minds, and, as a bonus, they're robbing you blind. Avoid at all costs.

Residents of Columbia ...…. just wanted to make you aware of what an outstanding dentist you have in your area. He is so worth it that I travel 45 minutes to get to him. I know he is relatively new to the practice of Dental Care of Columbia but rest assured if you have the opportunity to consult with him regarding your dental needs, he will not disappoint. As a person who has had a lifetime of dental issues and so many dentists, I can honestly say he is one of the best dentists I’ve ever had. He is incredibly knowledgeable, proficient and happens to have an excellent bedside manner. Hands down he has the best numbing technique I’ve ever endured and has managed to take away my fear of numbing/needles. He seems genuinely concerned about you as a patient and in no way do you feel rushed during your appointment or feel like just another number. In general, I believe most people hate going to the dentist, but you’ll have a new perspective on that once you meet Dr. Knight.

I've been with this practice for a few years and have had an okay experience overall, but recently started seeing Dr. Knight, and he's been great. I needed a filling done the other day, and he took extra time to make sure it was done right and kept the area dry the whole time. No billing issues and definitely no pressure to have extra work done. The rest of the staff have been good as well.

I really enjoy this dentist office and the excellent care , patience they give to their customers. Dr. Knight and his staff are very professional and very informative when it comes to explaining in detail what is needed for me and anyone who visits this office to have any type of dental work done. The office has a relaxing and soothing atmosphere , so if your nervous you won’t be for long. I highly recommend Dental Care of Columbia to anyone who’s looking for a dentist and his staff to treat you like royalty. I also give Kudos to Sabrina, she is one of the dental hygienist their who I trust working in mouth without any reservations. I leave her chair feeling welcoming and refreshed after a consolidation, cleaning and whatever is needed. Again, the Dr. Knight and staff are Awesome !

Dentist was knowledgeable and my hygienist was gental. Was seen at appointment time.

This office is very unprofessional. They are constantly rescheduling appointments! It’s usually on the day of or day before and they reschedule for weeks and sometimes months later! It’s ridiculous. My husband has taken time off of work to be at an appointment and they have forgotten to reschedule him and he ends up missing more time off of work. Their dental service is fine and they staff are friendly but it doesn’t make up for this problem. I’ve had appointments rescheduled 4 times, months later than the original appointment!!!
