I saw 2 other pediatric dentist and they all made me feel so uncomfortable ! The dr's at this office Were the total opposite . The doctor's and staff all took there time with my little ones! Never made me feel rushed and took there time Explaining everything in as much detail as possible . I can't say enough how happy I am with the office, staff, and the doctors!! Another outstanding visit with Dr. Matt and his team yesterday. Both of my girls had check ups, along with x-rays. They are always taken care of so well, and Dr. Matt was very thorough in his explanation of both kids situations. My girls never dread going to the dentist, and always leave laughing. Dr. Matt is great with the kids, as well as Drs. Patel and Kim. We have been to all 3. I highly recommend taking your kids to Kid's First. You won't find better.

This place doesn't back up their work and on top of it tries to make you feel like you're doing something wrong. I would never take one of my kids here again. Shady Dr. Matt tries to instill fear over your kids perception of the dentist office to do unnecessary work. Dude, your a dentist..do your job and shut up! I wish I would of gone elsewhere from the get go. He convinced us to put our child under for simple cavity repair...this guy and his whole bells and whistle office is a joke. He will sit you down and try to have the most serious BS conversation with you to basically scare you into listening to his ideas which of course wind up costing you a lot of money. Find another pediatric dentist office that actually cares about your kids well being. This place is all show no substance-be aware of Dr. Matt and his circus

Every time we come to the office, I am so happy! My daughter had her hygiene appoint yesterday and the assistant and hygienist were both so nice and made her feel so comfortable. The dentists are great always so pleasant but today there was an employee who was slightly rude because we walked past the X-ray area unknowingly, she kind of pushed my daughter to the side and once I realized I walked past, I apologized and she ignored me. I did not appreciate that at all. The employee had a blonde braid in today didnt catch her name.

Everyone we encountered was kind and professional. It put my 6 year old at ease, even before getting to the chair. They spike TO her, and not down to her, and explained everything satisfactorily, answering all of her questions, and mine. It was quick, and pain free. My daughter went from panicked tears in the morning, before the appointment, to skipping to our car after the appointment, talking about how much she liked Dr. Hernandez and “the helper lady” (Emily). I can’t recommend this practice highly enough.

Dr Kim was very nice but the women dentist that worked on my daughter was rude and wouldn’t let me go back with her and when i went back after she was done my daughter had marks all over her face and dried tears on her cheeks and when I asked my daughter what happened she said the dentist told her to “stop crying or I won’t let you see your mom” I will not be going back!

My family and I love Kids First Pediatric Dentistry. Each time we visit the staff is kind and welcoming. My children dont exactly look forward to going to the dentist but they dont dread it either. The dental assistants are gentle and talk my boys through the whole process to make sure they are comfortable. In the waiting room my boys are excited to play video games while waiting to be taken back which I believe helps them get their mind off of the fact that theyre at the dentist. After each visit they give my little guys a "goody bag" with a new toothbrush and a few small toys like bouncy balls which my children absolutely love. Nothing but excellent experiences here. Highly recommended!

We have had nothing but great experiences at Kids First. Recently we had an appointment with Dr. Karsten but when we got to the office my son had some anxiety about seeing him because he has only seen Dr. Patel. He saw Dr. Patel walking in the hall way, and she moved her schedule around so my son can see her instead. The flexibility of the doctors at this office so that kids don't have anxiety was something I never experienced or expected.

I stumbled upon Kids First Pediatric Dentistry while looking for a second opinion for my 5-year-old son after we were told he needed extensive work from another dentist’s office. Kids First Pediatric Dentistry was able to get us in the very next morning for a consult. To my disbelief my son’s dental issues were far worse than the first dentist’s office had discovered but we left Dr. Matt’s office that morning feeling comfortable and educated in what was needed. The staff then went above and beyond to coordinate so that Dr. Matt could discuss the treatment plan with my husband who was not at the appointment. Today we went in for his 1st of 4 treatment appointments and we couldn’t be happier. Kids First Pediatric Dentistry goes above and beyond for their patients, my son walked back to the treatment room with no hesitation and within 45 minutes he had received 2 fillings, 2 caps and 2 extractions with no discomfort (and no mom present

Very disappointed in this practice. I've been a loyal customer since my 10 year old first needed a dentist and was so happy to find this place, even traveled from Yorkville to Elgin for a few years. I'm a firm believer in charging for "No call, No Show" as I am in an industry that we also encounter such appointments and it can be frustrating. Now saying that, if a person was in duress during the time of an appointment such as a close family member dying, there is a level of understanding that should be taken into account. I felt very close to this practice and even went with the flow when we switched from Dr. Matt to another doctor in his practice when he new my boys had anxiety about doctors. I feel lost in the practice that went from cute and cozy to sterile and cold. I am sad to say I will be looking elsewhere for a new pediatric dentist for my boys.

The office and treatment rooms are clean & bright, and all the hygienists, and assistants are so friendly and warm. Although the service is efficient, we don't feel rushed. July 2017- I was a little nervous to take my son for his first appointment (just under 3 years old) but the entire experience was wonderful. He was super entertained in the waiting room and the dental hygienist was amazing. Talked to my son on his level and made everything fun for him. Dr. Austin Bowden was just as great. Was just as wonderful with my son and provided good information for me. Would definitely recommend to others. July 2018- Just as impressed our third time around. We were taken back to room within 2 minutes of arriving. We had a different hygienist this time but she was great. Give directions my son can follow easily. He told her he was going to have a super hero party and she got him a tooth brush with a super hero on it (sounds small but goes a long way for a 4 year old). My son actually gets excited and looks forward to his appointments. Dr. Austin was great as usual. Quick and effiecent.

I had an appointment for all three of my children at 9 a.m. today. Upon entering the office, I was really surprised how clean and inviting it was. They had a great area for the kids to play video games while we waited. Speaking of the wait, it was very short. My kids were seen a timely manner. The hygienists and the dentist's were wonderful. They explained everything clearly and made sure my kids knew exactly what was happening. I would recommend their office to anyone! I have a son who is On the autism spectrum. He is 11 years old. He had a baby tooth the brok and half of it was still stuck inside. We tried to get it out for a couple of weeks and had to go to see Dr Matt to get it out. Earlier that day he needed to get two shots for school we tried everything To get him to lay down so the nurse could give him the shots. I had to lay on his chest and hold his arms so they could give him the shots as he is kicking and screaming. So I was so afraid how he was going to react to getting the pick of broken tooth out. I imagined I would have to do the same. I gave Dr Matt heads up to let him know what to expect. As I was in the waiting room I am texting my wife because she too was worried I was called to come in. So I thought here we go time to hold him down but No he was next to Dr Matt with a big smile it was all over. It was done so fast. It brought tears to my eyes. This is why all 3 of my kids love going to see Dr Matt. They look forward to going to the dentist to see Dr. Matt and his amazing staff. When you walk in that office it is full of smiling kids. So any person who would write a negative review must be working for another dentist office.

Both of my boys (5 and 9 years old) love coming here! The doctors Matt and Cory have been more than amazing and even more accommodating. Our family has a history of the MTHFR gene so when we heard that my youngest needed a crown for a cavity they were amazing with understanding we couldn’t use the laughing gas and made my son feel so comfortable the whole time. Wish I got a second opinion for my daughter's cavities. She's only 3 and once the exam was over, we will pulled into another room to go over what needs to be done, and urgency to set up an appointment for the procedure immediately. During the procedure, instead of fillings that were discussed, my daughter ended up with many crowns. So of course, after the procedure, will get a bill for additional charges which was in the thousands. Later on, we went for a cleaning appointment and I wanted to talk about the bill but they were having none of it and told me to pay the bill or it goes to collections. Will not be taking my kids to this place again.

I took my daughter to Dr. Matt when she turned 3, for her very first dentist visit. She saw him twice and unfortunately we lost our insurance when my husband got laid off and we were forced to see a different dentist for the time being. They were never as great as Kids First and then my daughter had a horrible experience with the hygienist at the not so good place. I called Dr. Matt's office the next morning to get a 2nd opinion and they got me in right away. Every single person at that office was so kind and made sure to reassure my daughter that she would NOT have the same bad experience with them. Dr. Matt and the rest of the staff at Kids First Pediatric are by far the BEST in the area. Very professional and they truly have your child's best interest in mind. I would recommend them to anybody looking for a pediatric dentist! : )

Doctor Matt and staff care so much about their little patients! My two kids (10y & 8y) go there since they were born and I couldn't be happier. If you are looking for great kids dentist who really care then you just found him! All of their dentist are great. Yesterday my daughter chipped her front tooth really badly and thanks to Dr Matt my daughter's tooth was fixed within 24h after the accident. I couldn't be happier with the choice for our kids. Today was our first visit. I have 2 daughters ages 2 and 4. Not only did we feel welcome right when we walked through the door, the dental hygienist was so sweet and really made an extra effort to make my girls feel safe. I felt right at home. The office keeps emailing me to leave a review so here it is. I came to this office because it’s clearly highly recommended by other patients online. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a “five star” experience like everyone else. My two year old daughter has a whole host of dental issues. As a concerned parent, I had a lot of questions, concerns, and solutions that I was hoping to discuss. After being checked by the dentist, he very rapidly began to tell me all the procedures that she needed to have done immediately. When I asked him why this was happening he said it could be from bottles or breastfeeding at night. He didn’t give me the opportunity to tell him that my daughter neither drinks from a bottle nor breastfeds. He did not give me the opportunity to problem solve why this could be happening to my child when we’re doing everything we are supposed to be doing and everything that they have been recommending. I guess he just assumed that we are incompetent in some way and that’s why it’s happening. As he continued to discuss how he would admit my child into the hospital to do major dental work, he was not doing a great job of explaining what he planned to do. It all felt like, “I’ve been doing this for a billion years. Just trust me blindly.” I tried to ask questions but got no clarity. He didn’t bother to make sure that I understood his recommendation. I left there feeling anxious, confused, and immediately made an appointment with another dentist. Why would I allow someone to do major dental work on my child if they can’t explain why she is having all those issues to begin with? If we don’t correct why it’s happening then it’s likely to just keep happening throughout her life. So I felt like he cared less about the overall health of my daughter and more about getting paid to do the most he could on her. Clearly, if you look at the other reviews, my experience is an outlier. But from my point of view, if you don’t foresee having any major issues and you are always going to follow “doctor’s orders” without hesitation, then this might be the place for you. But if you plan on being a very involved parent with a lot of questions and a desire to truly help your kid be the healthiest they can be, then i don’t know that this is the place you are looking for. It gets two stars because the young Hispanic woman who brought us back to our room was the sweetest human I’d ever met.

I have read a ton of great reviews of Dr. Matt, so when referred to him, I was happy to go. My son's anxiety was building quite a bit after a series of visits requiring dental work earlier this year. I emailed Dr. Matt ahead of the first exam to let him know of my son's experiences. I quickly realized on that first visit why he has had such good reviews. I am a veterinarian, so I have a slightly different prospective. This is an email to wrote to Dr. Matt after my son's visit for a tooth repair..... "Dr. Matt, I wanted to let you know how happy I was with Mason's appointment and repair the other day. Thank you for talking with me as well that day. My training in veterinary medicine and additional "Fear Free" training to help my patients with stress and anxiety with veterinary visits, has prompted me to try to help Mason with his dental visits. This is why I emailed you ahead, because I knew if I explained all of that in front of him....his anxiety might have increased while listening to it. I truly appreciate that you read my email and tried to use your obvious rapport building skills to ease Mason with his visits. After his repair, we went right over to get his ice cream cone. While there, I asked Mason if he cried at all. He said he didn't cry. I commented how he did that without me in the room. He was proud of himself that he didn't need me. He loved your "tooth pillow" and how it can change its level of opening. I asked him again if he would like to continue seeing you for all his dental visits. He responded with a strong "Yes". Dr. Matt, you are truly amazing at what you do. We both know that being a doctor is much more than doing the medical work. You need skill with understanding your patient beyond that. While we appreciate the caring staff and updated office... the most important thing is Dr. Matt took care of our son like he was his own. He was able to create a plan that required way less dental work than the other dentist and now has given us the gift of being back in a place where we only have to worry about prevention. My two year old son had his first dental visit here this week, and I was a little worried about how it would turn out since he does not enjoy getting his teeth brushed. When we moved here in 2011, our son (5 at the time) needed a tooth removed and a spacer inserted. We took him to a local Algonquin dentist who was unable to perform this task and ended up having to leave with tramatic experience. We found reviews and recommendations to Dr Karsten. Matt took us in and complete.tge.necessary work on our son quickly and more importantly painlessly. I've been in other dentists offices listening to kids being worked on and hearing all the crying. I've have not once heard a child crying due to pain caused by Matt or his staff. We refuse to go anywhere but Dr Matt's office. He is fast, friendly, and professional. Had another fantastic visit with Dr. Bowden (Austin) and the staff here. I cannot repeat myself enough when i say that this place is excellent. The staff is caring and extremely knowledgeable, the facilities are immaculate- from the beautiful (and full of activities) waiting room to the state-of-the-art equipment. They take the normal fear-of-the-dentist trope and turn it into a great experience that encourages lifelong dental care. I know I sound corny, but it's true. And just to nerd out on science for a second, but I asked a bunch of questions about different dental disorders (not great genes here) and both the hygienist and Dr. Bowden gave me extremely precise and thorough answers. They make very good friends with the kids, but don't be fooled- there is years of education, knowledge, and experience behind those cute sunglasses they give the kids to wear. (It keeps the harsh lights out of the the kids eyes during examination. And they are cute.) (PS) I accidentally called Dr. Austin "Dr. Tracy" to my kid. Sorry Dr. Austin!

My daughter, Grace, has down syndrome and he really took his time w her. We were new to his practice and it was my daughter’s first dentist experience at age 2. He was so knowledgeable about what we as parents have to look for when caring for our daughter’s teeth. I really felt like I learned a lot! No pain during or right after and it's been 3 days and he's had zero complaints about it at all. Amazing!

Very Disappointed in Dr. Matt Karsten. My family and I have been seeing him for several years. Unfortunately my youngest child is very anxious and had a bad experience with one of his partners. When I spoke to the manager she suggested we see Dr. Karsten because maybe all my child needed was a new Dentist. Unfortunately my youngest child was a bit tearful, timid and scared.Dr. Karsten didn't even address my daughter with a smile,His bedside manner was awful. He looked at her and said he wasn't going to treat her because he would cause trauma to her. He did not establish any type of good report with her. He did not sit down and try to speak to her. He stood out side the door way and told me his recommendation was to go to outpatient surgery and sedate her. I work in Emergency department and I believe the more traumatic experience is to go have a five year old have an IV placed put under heavy anesthetic where there are more risks of side effects of sedation and respiratory arrest. The less traumatic experience would be for her to establish trust in her dentist. Dr Karsten was very rude to me and spoke to me in a very degrading manner. So if you have a very anxious child I do not recommend him unless your child can sit still not move or his recommendations are to have your child to be under anesthesia to have cavities filled.

Everyone was super nice from the moment I booked the appointment to when we left. There was barely any wait at all. Dr Bowden was great with my daughter and she did not cry or make a fuss at all during the appointment (she's only two). Highly recommend!

Dr. Matt said my 22 month old daughter had 8 cavities and would need to be put under general anesthesia for crowns and fillings. They stressed that it needed to be done very soon. She's not even two, so her first dental examine was pretty scary. She cried, put up a fight. Dr. Matt commented that "There's a whole lot of woman in there." Huh? Seemed like an inappropriate thing to say. Then they scuttled us into a room and gave us the cost breakdown. Thousands. We decided to get a second opinion. Turns out she has 4 cavities and they can be treated with silver diamine flouride over the course of several short office visits. $35. The second dentist was smaller, not as busy, calmer experience all around. Don't let them pressure or scare you into doing anything you aren't comfortable with. Get a second opinion.

We are new to Towson and I found this practice by searching online. My son is a very shy 6 year old. They have video games and tablets inside. Although, one tablet wasn't working and the other tablet's games kept freezing. The hygienist was so friendly that my son opened up and had a great experience. The reasons why I'm not giving 5 stars are due to the fact that the gaming center isnt fully working and just will end up frustrating a child but thankfully the wait wasn't long. Also, because his appointment was at 2pm, being a new patient I got there early to fill out paperwork and realized as patients started piling up outside their locked doors that they don't open their doors until 2 on the dot and not a minute earlier. There was at least 10 people, including myself and my son standing in a hallway. Minor details, I just won't go right after their lunch break to avoid the big crowd checkin. My son loved it and so did I and would highly recommend this practice to anyone!

I would like to express my interaction with Dr Matt and first pediatric dentistry. Unfortunately, I do not believe or agree with the statement “nurture and care” in the doctors bio. This is due to a recent visit to this office. My child was in need of a simple filling, was seen in the Elgin office on three separate occasions and each time turned away due to the inability of the pediatric dentist and staff to make him feel cared for and safe. The child is 5 yrs old and very frightened as any 5 yr old would be. At the last appointment, there were raised voices and comments made insinuating that we were bad and neglectful parents all because we did not want to sedate our son. If we were neglectful, we would not have continued to try to take care of the issue. It is my thought that the doctor, who has been trained to make children feel cared for and safe failed to do so therefore making it seem like it is our fault. It’s unfortunate for you and your office, that we took our son to a general dentist and within 1/2 an hr the caries was removed, a filling placed and the child felt comfortable and safe. My children will not be returning kids first.

Yesterday was my daughters (2 1/2 years old) first trip to a dentist and Dr. Bowden was excellent. His staff was also exceptional. (2ND visit) Yesterday was our second visit and my girl needed a filling. She refused to take the medicine before hand so I was skeptical of the filling happening. BUT SHE DID GREAT. Dr.Bowden is SO GREAT WITH KIDS. He counted to 10 and 5 a couple times while drilling which she liked and distracted her. The only part she didn't like was the sealant because it tastes yucky. But overall excellent experience Dr.Bowden is 10 stars in my book.
