Our kids have been taking classes at City Moves (Murray Hill location) for years. We have experience with their Storytime Ballet, Ballet/Tap Combo, and Hip Hop classes.
We love City Moves, and the instructors we have met are all warm, fun, and inviting to the kids. We have tried another, more structured ballet school in the past, but for us, the City Moves environment has been so much better for our family.
I'm not sure how they would describe their own teaching philosophy, but my perception over the years has been that they focus on providing a fun, high-energy, inclusive environment where kids can find and explore their own love of dance without an over-emphasis on rules/structure.
They are not overly rigorous about outfits or hairstyles or some of the other things that used to drive me crazy with the other school we tried. The kids often get to play dress up in the ballet classes, and there is plenty of opportunity to move around and let out some energy, which is especially nice in the winter. We never have trouble with the kids getting bored of class half-way through the semester or not wanting to go to City Moves!
The recitals are short, sweet, and adorable. Costumes for recitals are extra (and not cheap) but are beautiful and high quality.
The extra tea parties and pajama parties are great, and my kids LOVED the week of summer dance camp they did with City Moves, held at Scandinavia House (so convenient).
They're very welcoming of boys as well, and our son has participated in (and loved) hip hop, the pj parties, and the summer dance camp as well.
