Terrible customer service. I'm a 200+ pound white girl, who walked in on day, about a few months ago, to get accessories for a cosplay, and walked in to a Hispanic lady talking to a Hispanic gentleman about the special effect type makeup. Not being rude, I didn't want to bug her when she was busy with him, so I started to look around and she called out "yes, what do you want?" As if I was a dog or something. Being timid, I hesitantly walked up to her and told her, what I wanted. I even showed her on my phone, and instead of leading me to the accessories, she told me to wait there and grabbed a package that didn't have what I wanted. I tried to tell her it was the wrong color but she kept insisting that, that's all they had. So I bought the product and left. With the man chuckling, as I walked out the door. I will never shop there again. I wish I got her name, so I could report her to the manager, and if she was the manager, then she's doing a very lousy job at keeping loyal customers. Terrible

Seeing lots of reviews about bad attitudes of the people there, and I can agree, but today was okay, probably because I kept it pointedly short and looking for something specific, which I still had to do my own research on right there in the store. When someone walks in saying outright they can not use spirit gum, you don't hand them spirit gum expecting them to go with it. The last time I was there I was before Halloween and met with the attitude, and can still say that compared to the small, dark space downstairs, I've definitely seen and experienced much better.

Gibson's is one of the few places in San Antonio that you can find good, select costumes for theatre productions. Not the greatest quality all the time but good overall.

If I could give this place negative stars I would. Renting a costume here was a nightmare. From the very beginning the experience was less than pleasant. The rental process was not ideal but ultimately it was what I settled for. I was specifically told that I was ONLY allowed to try on 3 dresses so I should "choose" wisely. I was honestly shocked that a business would limit their customers rather help them. I was once again limited and threatened with a fine after renting a dress. At the time of the rental it was explained that the rental was good for 3 days. I picked up my dress on Friday afternoon, a few hours before the event I was wearing it to. The very next day I received a call from a more than rude employee at the store telling me that the rental was due in before close at 5pm. I had barely had the dress for a little over 24 hours and was not home at the time of the call. I asked if I could take it in the next day but was told that they were closed on Sunday and I could return it on Monday but I would have to pay a fee. I asked if I could have an extension or if an exception could be made due to the fact that I had only had the dress for one day but was rudely told no. I asked how much a late fee would be and was told it was the entire cost of the dress! Which was not cheap. Everything that the associate rudely told me on the phone did not sound right since it contradicted what I was told at the time of the rental. I requested to speak to a manager and again was told no. I asked again and even far more rudely was told that I could either return the dress now or pay a fee. I asked a third time for a manager and was told that I could not talk to her because she was not there. I could not believe the lack of professionalism from an employee over the phone. When I asked if I could have the cellphone of the manager so I could speak to her I was immediately told NO and then was hanged up on! I called right back and requested and explanation for being hung up on and for the employees name. Again more no's and was hung up on a second time. I visited the store to return the dress and speak to someone in person was yelled at by the female I had spoken to in the phone. I questioned her lack of professionalism and was yelled out of the store. All of this infant of other customers. The employee had no shame. I am still waiting to hear from the manager as my calls continue to be ignored and I am afraid for my safety if I ever visit that establishment again. Worst experience ever!

I really don't know how they stay in business!!! We walked in to rent a flapper dress for a deb party. The clerk REALLY didn't want to have to go upstairs to show us the flapper dresses. She told us that we had to promise to pay today if we wanted to try on dresses. I explained that if we found one that we liked, we would pay today, but if it didn't look right, we would not. She told me not to give her "attitude"! I calmed her down and she finally let us go upstairs. My daughter tried on 2 dresses. They looked ok, but she was so rude, we decided not to give them our business.

I host a party for friends and family once a year , always different themed and I always send them to Gibsons. I always leave this store happy with my costume.

If I could give this place no stars I would. The staff are extremely rude and degrading. I went in there looking for a 1700s style dress. The woman working there was no help at telling me how the process went to fit a dress like that. When I needed a dressing room she looked at the dresses that I chose and forcefully grabbed all but one out of my hands and told me I wouldn't fit in them. In the dressing room I had no instructions on how to put the complicated dress on and she kept yelling at me to hurry up. She then barged into the dressing room without warning or permission and humiliated me in front of the other customers because I couldn't get the dress on. I will never come here again and will direct everyone I know not to go either.

Came in to purchase makeup for yesterday's KISS concert. I really dont know too much about makeup or makeup brands. The employee up front took the time to explain all the different makeup options and reassured me that the makeup was a good brand and would last throughout the concert. I ended up with paradise cake up and yes indeed, lasted all night long and did not run with me sweating. Very good makeup I must say. I will be returning for makeup come Halloween. Thank you Gibsons for making my time at concert more enjoyable as my makeup stayed put all night !!

While it may be true that the customer service is not the best, they do have the biggest selection of costumes I have seen in SA. You can find any and everything needed for a Halloween costume here. Some of the rentals can vary in expense (obviously), but if Party City doesn't cut it, try this place for greater variety.

UPDATE: 01/31/17 come to find that other kids got their costume from this shop, so they did have kids costumes, just the ignorant lady behind the counter with the vacuum decided she was not going to help us. Went to STARLINE costumes and received great service! I urge others to use any other shop, the kind of treatment we got should not be ignored. Called in to inquire about a renaissance costume for my elementary aged child and was told to come in so they could assist and quickly got off the phone. 2 days later we showed up and were rudely greeted with a no we don't have that, we definitely don't have that we only do adult costumes. You probably confused us with another shop. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

How do you give negative stars?!? I just called to inquire about superhero costumes and the girl that answered was rude, short and didn't seem to want to help. She didn't know inventory off hand, and their website says nothing about whether they carry those costumes or not. She asked me to call back in 5 mins.. not sure if I will. If you can't offer good customer service over the phone, why would I get it if I go in person? Customers are the reason she has a job, she needs to remember that, whoever that was that answered.

Rude, closed shop 30 mins early, despite posted hours. Pressured us to leave store. Tried to reserve a costume for 2 weeks later, happy to pay deposit but of course ‘credit card machine is broken.’ Must leave cash deposit. Ok, how about a check? Nope. How about you take my credit card information as security and I’ll be back to pick it up in 2 weeks? Nope. Must come tomorrow before noon with cash to reserve costume otherwise we’ll put it back on the racks. Um, I don’t need this for 2 more weeks. Zero attempt to accommodate or even have a customer. Will certainly go somewhere else in the future.

When they told me they didn't have the costume I was looking for, they kept their eyes on me like a hawk as I walked around. It was uncomfortable. The only thing that distracted them was when they started arguing with a customer over a rental size issue. Two different employees yelled at and belittled the poor customer who, I feel, was completely in the right. I understand their policy but they were extremely rude to this poor lady and put on a show for the entire store.

We were in a time crunch. Upon entering, my wife was asked to leave her backpack at the counter, but I was not. (She is black and I am white.) We probably should have left then, but as I said, time crunch. We asked to see the costumes for rent, and all three of the ladies standing around looked at one another, clearly put out. Once upstairs, the woman allowing us to try things on, was rushed. She told us that my wife could try on three items. (Understandable, all retailers have an in-dressing room limit, right?) Wrong! After trying on the 3 initial items, we were told that we could only try on three TOTAL in the whole store, period. What a waste of time and energy!!! Save your time and energy and go to Cherry’s Costume’s Galore! We arrived right at closing time, but they warmly invited us in - showing us everything, and invited us to try on “whatever you like!” SUPER friendly and helpful - took their time with us as though they had just opened. Also, GREAT prices and return policy. They even offered to accommodate a drop off time that worked FOR US! Just bring cash or check, and you’re all set.

My husband, his friend and I went in to rent costumes for Halloween. We spent 30 minutes downstairs looking for costumes. Nobody offered us any help. My husband asked for help and we were rudely informed that that the rental costumes were upstairs. Good part: The ladies upstairs were helpful and answered all of our questions, one lady even helped my husband try on his costume and find me a matching one. Bad part: Downstairs The line to pay was disorganized and when we got to the counter to pay. The lady asked me what did I want and I said to pay for my rental she then said you are in the wrong line. So I went back to the line I was in and waited as the the lady behind the counter was so kind and helpful to the people in front of us. When my husband and I got up to the counter the lady asked," What do you want?" Really? I told her to pay for my rental. My zip code was already on the ricket and asked is this San Antonio and I told her no. She then explained that I had to pay double because I came from out of town. My husband said it's right outside of San Antonio. She said if your address doesn't say San Antonio you have to pay the whole ticket and then when you return them you will get half back. So we paid over $300 for a one day rental. My husband took the costumes to the truck, and then his friend paid next. He lives in Shertz and was not told to pay his entire ticket.Really? When I turned in the costumes it was the same lady that charged me, she took the first costume and just threw it on the floor at the feet of the older lady that was separating the returned costumes. She had me sign for the returned costumes and told me that was it. I asked for my money back and she oh. If I didn't ask she would have sent me on my way with no refund. Even though our costumes were awesome, after my experience I will not be a return customer or recommend this shop to anyone that I know. Thanks for the bad experience.

Went in today to rent Darth Vader and Storm Trooper costumes and I gotta say these costumes are amazing. Not your ordinary out of the package costumes. I was really impressed and the kids loved it. I will definitely continue to use this shop for my costume rentals. Also I must add costumes are also very neat and organized. I highly recommend this shop for anyone looking for an authentic costume.

I was super excited to find this store. I came to rent something and the department on the top level were you rent from was very rude. Its a shame when you go to a store were employees make you feel like its a bother to do their job . There're many costume shops to purchase from it would be helpful for the owner to hire people that appreciate the business they get. I prefer to spend my money that I work hard for somewhere my business is wanted. I don't recommend this place to anyone and good luck if you do. Halloween is once a year people it kills you to have customer service skills for a month. SMH

Came in today for face and body paint and this place hands down has it all. I was thinking I was going to walk out of here needing to order online. But I was able to get everything here. I couldn’t believe how extensive they’re line of Ben Nye and Mehron was. Worker who helped me was very friendly and knowledgeable on the makeup. Found EXACTLY what we needed. Had great help from a really nice older lady. Went to rent the costume for a weekend and they wanted to charge us for four days of rentals at $90 a day.... which would be close to $400. Then couldn't add anything (like a hat) after the rental was figured. Younger shop employees were not very customer friendly. Lost our business and we are off to look somewhere else.
