Hazardous Work, Poor Safety Record, No Benefits, Below Average Pay
Project Manager (Former Employee), Boise, ID – November 26, 2018
Pros: The work is interesting and challenging.
Cons: Hazardous working conditions, below average pay, extremely physically demanding, even in management, despite what you may be told.
First Team Restoration is a "family" owned (and run) business, with more than half the staff related to each other by blood or marriage. What this means to you is that if you had thought to be promoted or trained for more skilled (and better paying) work, keep in mind you will NEVER be first in line for these opportunities at this company.
It also means that people you do NOT report to, with job titles like "Estimator" will walk up to you randomly and chew you out for some unknown (and never before mentioned!) performance issue you apparently have, leaving you wondering why your actual "manager" is not having this discussion with you . . . oh right, the "family" thing.
There are no benefits of any kind, no paid holidays, no sick pay, no PTO, no vacation, no insurance, etc. If you are hired into a "management" position, you may receive some amorphous promises about time off, but none of this will ever appear in writing, and things will get testy for you if you start to ask for the promises in writing.
The work will expose you to asbestos, lead, meth, and other hazardous chemicals and materials. You may or may not be issued functional and appropriate PPE, and beware that you may be issued "used" (already contaminated?) PPE like respirators, for example.
The "safety training" offered at this company is minimal and ineffective. You will be expected to work with grinders, saws, drills, and heavy equipment, whether or not you are effectively trained to do so. There are no classes or training sessions offered in the safe operation of these powerful and dangerous tools . . . well, not until AFTER there has been another gruesome workplace injury/accident.
For these and other reasons, turnover at this company is probably greater than 50% annually, across ALL positions (including non-family "management) sometimes with three people quitting in the same week. For a company with only 15 "employees" (including family) that is an atrocious attrition rate, and should certainly tell you, the prospective employee, a LOT about the company you are thinking of working for.
You will be expected to travel hundreds of miles to out of town jobs, and will only be paid for "drive time." If you drive your own vehicle, they will pay for gas, but not "depreciation!" Pitiful.
Consider this and the other reviews of this company here and elsewhere. At least one of the other reviews is OBVIOUSLY written by a "sock puppet," manager claiming to be a technician (5 stars? NO cons? Wow!).
If you have to take a job here (because you can't find anything else, and despite my warnings) make sure you get all your "promises" in advance and in writing, especially if you are hired into "management." If you are hired for ANY position, insist that ALL your PPE be issued to you in NEW condition, that it FITS properly, and that you are TRAINED in how to use it.
Or just work somewhere else, doing much easier (and less hazardous!) work for the same money. Your choice.
