Quirky and noisy, with old and new-ish coin-operated machines everywhere in a big hall right at the pier. Some machines don't work or were being repaired but there were so many you will have plenty of others to check out. One can change notes to coins but you can't change large notes to smaller ones, so you might end up with $20 in quarters like us - but there's enough hungry machines to get rid of them again. Some require 2 players but you can use most of them on your own as well. Not all of the machines are interactive, quite some are animated scenes which are quite fun to watch.

One of your best attractions to visit on the pier in San Francisco. And I can't imagine what this would feel like to someone in their 80's, seeing these types of things again. You can walk through for free, or spend a lot of quarters seeing the old arcade do it's thing, get your fortune told or get a little souvenir. Note the gift shop is, fittingly, a vending machine. I got a cool little pin for $5, and there are far worse places down here to spend your money.

I have been coming here for over a decade and I still really love this place. They have a great selection of vintage games including pinball, skeeball, and other arcade games. The games are fun to play and are generally well maintained. I ducked in here on a rainy day last week and blew through a couple hours and less than $20, which I thought was really reasonable (especially for SF!). It wasn't even very crowded, which considering the touristy location and rainy weather, I was pleasantly surprised!

Such an interesting and unique place I would honestly recommend for anyone. Basically all of the games/toys? are 25 or 50 cents, so it's not an expensive place. Entry is also free. There are countless vintage and old games and things here you could easily spend 2+ hours if you played the games. Many of them are so obscure and old it is just an experience to have the opportunity to play them. Would recommend for anyone and everybody!

If you like games at all -- video games or arcade games -- or if you enjoy learning about history in a hands-on way, you HAVE to visit Musée Mécanique! This place is like a sanctuary for long-forgotten and/or vintage arcade games. It also has mechanical music boxes that are interactive, so you can play a song and watch it roll along the track. Other fascinating attractions include the beginnings of pinup girls (pay to see photos of women who were scantily-clad for the time) and short skits in shadow boxes with questionable purposes (one which comes to mind was an execution by hanging; doors open, prisoner drops on rope, scene pauses for 5-10 seconds, then doors close and machine resets). My favorites were truly the penny arcade machines. Most did not involve skill but were still fun to play, for the experience. Two stuck out in my mind: in one, you lift platforms alternately to glide a metal ball back and forth (and upward) to the end/top of the track, but at the sides are open holes which will swallow the ball. In the other, a putting/golf game, the player angles the golfer and then hits the metal ball with (hopefully) just enough force to get it to glide in the hole. Naturally, the terrain is uneven and not conducive to golfing nor rolling metal balls. I was quite unskilled at the first, but managed to get a hole-in-one on the second! Anyway, suffice it to say that I had a blast and I'd go again in a heartbeat, so you should definitely go!

A very cute arcade in Fisherman's Wharf! Playing with the antique arcade machines gave me a thrilling hands on experience. Don't worry about bringing quarters as there are ATM machines.

I really loved this place. Very unique. Staff members were on hand (on roller skates) to help out with any lost quarters. Seeing the Victorian click-bait is hilarious. All the machines seemed to be in good working order and in addition they had some digital arcade games. Very unique so worth the trip to see.

My son and I had a great time here yesterday. He was skeptical at first but he enjoyed some of the more antique machines and loved the 80s/90s arcade games. We even played skeeball. My only thing is that their website claims that the machines range from 1c to $1 but there was only one singular machine that was 1c and it was "how sexy are you" lol. They really should list that almost everything is 25c or 50c.

We always have a great time here! The enjoyment to cost ratio is great(most machines take a quarter, some take pennies or dimes!) The only criticism I can give is the lack of ambient music is a bit off putting, I think a jukebox at low volume could be a good addition. Otherwise, play on! Great for kids and adults alike! Plenty of interesting things to see and play with. A great trip down memory lane! There is no admission fee. Just pay a quarter or two for whatever you want to play. Change machines also available.

It has lots and lot of antique coin games which can be played with quarter or half dollar. These are all the old mechanical games which are very good for both playing and watching. The whole place is filled with it. At the end there are few latest digital games. The best thing is that entry is free for this place

Perfect little tourist trap! We lived in San Francisco for almost 10 years and always visited. It was featured on the History channel. It's a great collection of vintage, sometimes very weird, and even culturally inappropriate penny arcade machines. A cool look into the past. Bring lots of quarters!

Great "blast from the past place", many arcade machines from old times, including several from 1800s. And... They work!!! Almost all of them, but they are cool, really nice stuff in 21st century. I definitely recommend to visit this place with family or friends. Some machines can "steal" your quarters, but... they are really cheap, and I can excuse a hundred years old machine :) I really liked an electric challenge machine, something "Crazy Adam's Family" it was nice and funny!

Very cool arcade with tons of interesting old games. Was a joy to randomly find this. They actually had my favorite arcade game of all time, a Star Wars X Wing pilot game where you blast tie fighters and do the Death Star canyon run. Hadn't played that since I was a little kid on the boardwalk in the summer so that was awesome to find.

Really cool and interesting antique coin operated gaming arcade. You get to see what entertainment was like a hundred years ago and gives a glimpse into how society was at the time. A lot of the stuff there have warning signs since they may be offensive, but it’s truly fascinating to see that these machines still exist and that they work. Must see attraction in the Fisherman’s Wharf area.

The Musee Mecanique is a wonder to behold, truly. So many interesting ideas within arcade gaming and entertainment that have existed over the years can all be found here. Admission is totally free and the machines are cheap and well maintained, it was pretty much the biggest highlight of my trip to San Francisco. The curator and owner deserve massive praise. Its hard to describe how cool and fun this place is. Bring lots of quarters and let your self be amused from an era gone by before the tiny screens in our pockets ruled us. Its really fun to see all these mechanical and electrical devices do their thing. There is also a section of vintage video arcade games, including a sit down Ms. Pacman. Definitely a cool place for the 'gram. I'm not sure any other place in earth has a mechanized diorama with farting cowboys (yes with sound), a simulation of a British prison hanging, and a huge mechanical circus all within 50 feet of each other. The place is huge, you will discover your own favorite bits. Go explore!

The perfect place to fritter away some quarters while taking a break from modern technology. You can easily spend an hour or so wandering around all of the curious machines and trying your hand at retro arcade games like skeeball. It's also a great spot to get some souvenirs that aren't just baseball hats and fridge magnets - whether you're into pressed pennies, photobooth snaps or "palm readings" from the fortune teller machines. Great for solo travellers, couples, groups and families.

There's an ATM and change machine inside so it's convenient to pop in even if you weren't particularly planning on visiting. Came on a Sunday and it was fairly busy but other than that I would highly recommend visiting this fun and unique "museum."

Took my youngest for the 1st time, he enjoyed it and wants to go again. Almost everything from my childhood was there(from the Cliff House). My dad took me there when I was his age and I took his oldest brother and sister while it was still at the Cliff House. I took his older brother and sister to the current location when it opened. Tuesday his sister and I took him. My parents went while everything was still at Playland and after it moved up the hill to the Cliff House. Nice to see someone is taking care of everything and it still works.

The museum is really cool. Unlike other museums where you can't engage with the exhibits, this museum is basically an arcade. Some of the machines are over 100 years old, whereas some are newer. I actually found some quarters too, which is cool.

I had read about this in tour books, and wasn't necessarily planning to go, but we happened upon it and went in, and I'm glad we did. There are machines from way before our time, but also video games from my and my friend childhoods. It was a lot of fun to show our kids what was once considered high-tech. It was also incredibly interesting to play the really old machines and imagine a time when those were the newest, most exciting technology. It was fun, and sometimes surprising, to see which of the machines my teenage kids were interested in. The building backs up to the bay, so you can walk out the back door and onto a boardwalk. There are public restrooms right across the street. We all really enjoyed this. There's really something for everyone here.

Great retro fun - the children laughed at us as we wow'd at the favourites from our childhood e.g. space invaders and pac man - but after having a go they were hooked and have been playing them on apps on their phones since! This is a good stop in San Francisco as you bound to explore fishermans wharf area anyway, and its cheap fun as it is only a quarter for a go on most of the arcade games in there.

This is a cool spot near pier 39. it's basically a big hall filled with old arcade machines that you can play. If you want to pass some time here, grab a handful of quarters or 5$ 10$ 20$ bills to convert into quarters and play until the money runs out. From what I could see they don't convert spare change into quarters only the dollar bills I mentioned previously. If you like retro arcade games, here's the place to go.

So fun! Place was larger than expected, and I was wonderfully surprised by the prices! Many games were just a quarter or a couple quarters. There are change-making machines should you need quarters. There were plenty of games from my childhood years, and many more from before then. Different types of machines from fortune tellers, to vintage foosball, skee ball, Pac Man, machines/mannequins that perform, boxing men, strength testers, and so on. Pinball was definitely a highlight - there were several machines available from old vintage versions (25 cents) to Indiana Jones ($1). Fun for all ages. 30 minutes to an hour can be spent here.

I don't even know where to begin. We decided to stop in and see what it was, and we spent over an hour just in awe. The collection of VERY old coin machines was so much fun! My kids wanted to watch/play all of the old games, even my 11 preferred the older "ancient" games over the newer ones in there. I wish the space was a bit larger, since it was pretty crowded, but I still really enjoyed my time there.

I'm an arcade enthusiast and this was absolutely worth the trip to Fisherman's wharf. There is something there to bring back memories for everyone, or at least wow you on something you didn't know existed as a machine. A few of the old machines repeat, I would like to see those replaced by something different, but that's my strongest criticism. You can find arcade amusements at a quarter to 50c a pop like this!

I am big fan of classic pinball and arcade machines, and this location was a paradise if you are into that. They also have mutoscopes which are fascinating. When I was there, one was labeled "XXX", but don't be alarmed it is not that bad. Maybe for the time is was risqué. If you're looking for an alternative to all the major attractions on the pier, then give this a try.

Absolutely loved this place! Fun for our 7 year old, 10 year old, 14 year old, and parents through our 80 year old relatives that came with us! We spent two hours here, and could've easily spent more time, but they had to close (and they even closed way later than their posted close time!). We all had so much fun, and many of the machines can be enjoyed by all with one coin. We probably spent $40-50 in quarters (yes, they give change there), between seven of us, so pretty cheap entertainment for a night out in San Francisco. This place was one of a kind for sure! Fabulous that the owners keep these turn of the century antique machines working well and accessible to the public. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could!

Wow. Just wow. I'd love to pitch a tent and never leave this place. The refinished old timey arcade attractions are incredible. What many would consider a waste, these folks have tenderly restored and put on display. I easily drop 30.00 each time I'm down in San Fran just to make sure I don't miss a thing. I do hope that they continue this project and being more historic machines

A must see in San Fran! Easy walking distance from Pier 39. Incredible insight into entertainment in the past. Could spend hours there and only need $10

This is not a fancy place at all, but it is a lot of fun none the less. Basiically it's a warehouse filled with pinball and other coin games tucked away in the heart of this tourist area. It's a good way to spend an hour or so away from the crowds. It's nostalgic for those who remember games you inserted a coin to play. For the younger ones, it can be an exotic experience playing "antiques" that they only heard about or have seen in old movies

Yep worth every p... err quarter. Very fun end to a rainy day, free entry, lots of antique machines. Some machines may offend those of a politically correct nature, who can wait outside and smell there own trumps instead. Best bit was the one lane bowling alley.

I missed this gem the last time I was in San Francisco and made sure to come by this time. The arcade is free to get in with most of the games running at about 25-50 cents to play. Had a blast checking out the antique games and the good old classics.

I don't end up in fisherman's wharf often, but when I do, I come here and spend a few dollars. Honestly such a cool little arcade museum but most tourist don't even know it's there on the corner of the pier

Such a nice old school arcade that has had a lot of the same things in there for so many years! I just wish they had air conditioning because as soon as you walk in it is just so warm and with the amount of people who go in and out it just feels muggy inside but overall a cool place to definitely go and check out.

Great place to visit. What I really like most about this place is its free. Be aware though, when you start playing games and use your quarters for the attractions, it can add up quick. A 10 minute visit can cost over 25 bucks, if you use too many quarters in rapid succession. Make sure you go out back on to the pier and take in the sights. It's a fantastic place for kids of all ages.

It was a good way to pass some time. Couldn't believe these antique and vintage mechanical machines still work. Also electric pinball machines, and electronic video games such as PacMan and Asteroids. And most play for 25 or 50 cents. There is a clean public restroom on the adjacent garage.

Fantastic old timey' fun. Had a blast for $20 worth of quarters. Amazing how well these machines are still working

Can't recommend this place enough. It will be crowded on the weekends, but a ton of fun. Games are $0.25 to $1.00 each, but plenty of $0.50 good options. Bring the kids or a date and be a child again.

Surprisingly really fun! It’s free to enter, and most games cost 25 or 50¢ to play. There is an ATM and change machine inside. I definitely recommend checking it out, especially on a rainy day!

This place is MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST see !!!! I just couldn't get enough of the player piano Nickelodeon machines played them for hours! And he has a fully restored Wurlitzer Carousel organ that plays more modern music from Custom rolls that he had made play the Beatles Elvis Beach Boys it's the most fantastic sound you'll ever hear if you've never heard one of these machines!!! I'd say 95% if not more of the machines in here you will not see anywhere else PERIOD!!! Just fantastic Beyond any words I could ever think of!!

I thought this was a really cool spot that isn't widely mentioned. A warehouse type building at the corner or Fisherman's Wharf that can easily go overlooked. It's free to go in but the games that can still be played take quarters only, old school style. There are dozens of antique games in the museum and some you can still play. It's interesting to see how far games have come.

This was the best part of Fishermans Wharf, even better than the sea lions ;). Brought me back to my childhood . Great old arcade games come the 80s and older. Would go back again . So fun
