My daughter spilled a bottle of nail polish remover on her 9 month old Macbook Air keyboard. It refused to power up. Apple would not try to get the data off of the SSD drive at their store and recommended it be sent away for repair... for $800. Within 10 minutes of walking in the door of Computer Cellar, I had my daughter's critical documents on a flash drive! While not guaranteed, the technician expected that with a few replaced parts, it would be up and running. Four days later, I picked up the repaired computer (replaced keyboard and backlight) and paid less than $200. Computer Cellar exceeded my expectations in every way. 5 stars!

Laptop was returned damaged. The repair was a screen replacement, which is a repair that was performed well. The job involved taking apart the main case of the laptop, doing a few things, and then putting it back together. The main laptop compartment was not put back together correctly, and it seems like screws were either stripped/missing by the employee.

I spilled some tea on my MacBook pro, and the Apple Store kindly suggested that I pay them $800 for repairs or--and this was the actual alternative they suggested--buy a MacBook Air. Instead, I went by the Computer Cellar, who proposed an entirely different solution, fixed the problem for less than $150, actually explained everything that they had done (I was curious), and more or less saved the day. When I went into the Computer Cellar for the first time, another customer, totally unprompted, pulled me aside to explain exactly how much she loved the place. At the time, I thought this was a little strange, but now it makes perfect sense. They're great.

I feel bad giving a poor rating because the customer service people were very nice, but they just didn't get the job done. And my computer has been half-as-efficient since I brought it there. I originally brought my computer to them because of a simple virus removal. After a day of analysis or so they basically said it was so infected that I needed an entirely new hard drive; they gave me the options of a used hard drive for value or brand new one for pretty expensive. Well being young and working for myself, I immediately chose the cheaper/used route, yet the repair, analysis and labor was still quite costly. Perhaps 1 month after they had replaced it, I had more issues and when I brought it back basically they told me the used hard-drive I just bought from them was defective and crashed. And because it was used - there's no warranty and there's nothing they could do. I get it - you never know with used hardware, but why support such a risky decision in the first place?. I didn't know any better. So once again I replaced the hard drive and at this point I just went for it and bought a brand new one. Another costly trip but was hoping would be worth it with a brand new hard drive. But when I brought it home it began doing something where it would shut itself down whenever I wasn't using it and it was idle. And not just going into sleep mode... the computer shut itself all the way down closing and losing any documents that are open during that time. Furthermore I'm unable to save documents to my main folders saying there's some sort of "Permission rights" error and the Administrator logged in is Karin... someone I do not know and apparently they don't know either. I called them and the woman was nice enough and said they needed to look at it to judge it and see what repairs I needed, but I just couldn't go back: every time I walk in that door they tell me I need a major repair and I drop $500-$800. So I didn't take it in and for the past year I've been working on a computer that I can't save documents onto (I use alot of dropbox) and it shuts itsself down turns off whenever I don't use it. So I have no problem with the people that work there... but when it comes to judging their repair jobs, I'll say I never walked away from there with my computer better than it was before I went there.

I visited The Computer Cellar on Friday, November 16, 2018. I had a software problem with my new Acer Chromebook. I was greeted promptly and courteously by the staff and to my surprise they immediately started giving my computer an examination. After asking me a few questions, they had my Chromebook working exactly like it was supposed to in about 15 minutes. I reached for my wallet, asking, "How much do I owe you?" Gabriel, the technician who fixed my computer, told me cheerfully, "No charge, glad we could help you, just remember us the next time you need computer service." WOW! What can I say? I own several computers and I'm sure of two things, that 1) my computers will need service in the future, and 2) I will take them to my new "go to" place for computer service, The Computer Cellar! They were nice, friendly and the premises were open and bright. I gave them some money even though they said there was no charge. These guys were great and I highy recommend them.

I have gone to the computer cellar for issues with two of my computers and both times the experience was superb. The computer geniuses were friendly, receptive, and beyond knowledgable about everything. My most recent issue involved my HP Spectre XT displaying a "boot device not found" message, and they were able to solve the problem in less than 20 minutes. They didn't even charge me! Go here for all your computer and electronic needs!

He wasn't sure if anything could be salvaged but agreed to give it a look. The next day he called to explain that it was not repairable, but would only charge me a smaller diagnostic fee. When I went into pay, he took the time to explain why the repair wasn't possible.

In a market with it's fair share of less than professional companies, I feel that The Computer Cellar is an invaluable resource for Durham. In areas where my ignorance abounds and could easily be taken advantage of, such as auto-repair and computer maintenance (to list only a few), it is a relief to find people who are so honest and professional. I came to them with a variety of issues, including a failing laptop. They assessed the problem, and suggested a fix that they considered my best option, although it was one that would not have netted them any money. It was clear to me that they are passionate about what they do, and are tenacious at problem-solving any issues that come their way, no matter the financial gain for themselves. Totally pleased with the folks at Computer Cellar. They did a neat job on my Macbook Pro repairing all the bad components after I spilled liquid on it. They gave me no guarantees but by the time they finished, my computer was better than before and price was very reasonable. I was so pleasantly surprised by the prompt, courteous service that Anthony and Gabriel provided. They answered the phone right away, were able to give me an estimate of how much time it would take after they saw the computer, and even provided me with the ability to text them if I had any questions throughout the day. They were very upfront about the cost, and even gave me the option to price out other options, but I went with them because their customer service was amazing, and I doubt the Apple store would have been able to get the job done so fast (or well). In areas where my ignorance abounds and could easily be taken advantage of, such as auto-repair and computer maintenance (to list only a few), it is a relief to find people who are so honest and professional. I came to them with a variety of issues, including a failing laptop. They assessed the problem, and suggested a fix that they considered my best option, although it was one that would not have netted them any money. It was clear to me that they are passionate about what they do, and are tenacious at problem-solving any issues that come their way, no matter the financial gain for themselves. I was so pleasantly surprised by the prompt, courteous service that Anthony and Gabriel provided. They answered the phone right away, were able to give me an estimate of how much time it would take after they saw the computer, and even provided me with the ability to text them if I had any questions throughout the day. I needed a laptop fan cleaned and thermal compound repasted. I was able to retrieve my laptop the day after putting it in for service. While the fans have been cleaned, there were 3 problems with the laptop after. One: the wi-fi card cables were not connected. I could not use the wi-fi. Two: a corner of the touchpad was elevated due to a wrong screw inserted in the back panel. It disabled the use of both right and left clicks. Three: the video card cable was improperly connected. This caused a pink tint in the screen. I was able to fix the issues myself, but it was more trouble than it should have been. The staff was friendly, but I highly recommend checking out the machine in-store after service to avoid such problems.

They even replaced a crucial failing part and tuned up the machine, which now runs better and faster than it has in years. I dropped it off with the Computer Cellar on a Monday morning, hoping they would just be able to transfer my data from the dead machine. By Monday afternoon, they had it up and running and because all it took was, apparently, a routine, almost labor-less fix that the apple store ought to have done (but instead wasted three hours of my life)...the Computer Cellar folks charged me nothing. $0. I'm still stunned. They could have nickel-and-dimed me at every turn--I have no functional idea what I'm doing with computers--but instead were just, like, honest, decent humans. I called and described the problems I was having with my Lenovo laptop and they flet like it was something they could fix. This was around 10:15 am. I drove over to their business tried my best to describe my issue. The extremely nice lead technician (Mark, I think) said that they would take a look at it but probably would be the next day before they could do so. That was OK by me. Later that day I got a call explaining that the hard drive was beginning to fail and it needed to be replaced. I ok'ed that and hung up. A few hours later I got a call that my computer was ready to pick up. WOW!!! Diagnosed and repaired all in the same day!!! They even were able to salvage the data files I had on my old hard drive. That is real customer service. I was impressed with the knowledge, professionalism and courtliness they displayed. This was my first time using The Computer Cellar but if I have any other computer Issues they will be the first and only folks I will call. I highly recommend them to you if you have a sick computer.

It's so conveniently located! I no longer need to make an appointment online or drive from Downtown to Southpoint to attempt to have my computer looked at. When I called to inquire about services a human being answered the phone! I didn't need an appointment, I could come in at my convenience, which was 15 minutes after I made the phone call! The customer service & affordability are amazing!!! The problem with my computer ended up being pretty simple, my power cord had a short in it. Andre was able to sell me a new one, but he went above and beyond to check out a few other concerns of mine. He also helped me with replacing the battery, I can now use my computer without it being plugged in! Andre also assisted me with purchasing an external hard drive and explained to me how to use it with Apple's Time Machine software to back up my computer in case my antique does eventually die. My mom and I waited in the shop while he checked everything out and in addition to answering all of my random curious questions Andre and the rest of the staff were warm and friendly! Thank you!!!

After all he waiting it turns out that they screwed it up even farther, the leds stopped lighting up instead of the the broken screen. Their only solution was for me to pay for the new broken screen or to receive it without the entire screen removed.

I called and described the problems I was having with my Lenovo laptop and they flet like it was something they could fix. This was around 10:15 am. I drove over to their business tried my best to describe my issue. The extremely nice lead technician (Mark, I think) said that they would take a look at it but probably would be the next day before they could do so. That was OK by me. Later that day I got a call explaining that the hard drive was beginning to fail and it needed to be replaced. I ok'ed that and hung up. A few hours later I got a call that my computer was ready to pick up. WOW!!! Diagnosed and repaired all in the same day!!! They even were able to salvage the data files I had on my old hard drive. That is real customer service. I was impressed with the knowledge, professionalism and courtliness they displayed. This was my first time using The Computer Cellar but if I have any other computer Issues they will be the first and only folks I will call. I highly recommend them to you if you have a sick computer.

I went in the other day for a black screen of death on my ASUS laptop. After many tries and fiddling around for days I couldn't fix anything. After less than 15 minutes at the computer cellar my laptop was fixed and as good as new with a new hard drive too. Gabriel was very friendly,professional and made a quick diagnosis and fix. It was very very affordable as well, a fraction of the price you would get this problem fixed anywhere else. I HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone with computer problems. The guys at Computer Cellar are awesome!! Gabriel was very helpful when I called and talked to him before I went in to drop off my daughter's laptop. I can't remember the person's name I spoke with (maybe Bob) when I went in, but he was just as nice and helpful. I dropped the laptop off at about 1 pm, and figured they would have it a few days. I was so surprised when they called me later that day and said it was ready. My daughter's laptop is running faster than it did when it was new! The cost was even cheaper than other estimates I had received. I would highly recommend Computer Cellar for any computer issues!!

Good honest service, went in with what I thought was a broken hinge. Turns out to be a loose screw, fixed with no charge. Edit: 9-23-19. Returned today with the same laptop that wouldn't turn on. Was told in 30 minutes that the motherboard was fried despite it being a busy day. Gabriel went beyond the call of duty by recommending replacement laptops. I cannot recommend this shop enough for UNC students since our ITS desk takes 2 to 3 days to even diagnose a problem.

My computer died & I freaked out because it's an 8 year old antique Mac book that the Apple Store won't touch. I'm so glad the Apple Store doesn't offer repairs now that I've found this place!!! It's so conveniently located! I no longer need to make an appointment online or drive from Downtown to Southpoint to attempt to have my computer looked at. When I called to inquire about services a human being answered the phone! I didn't need an appointment, I could come in at my convenience, which was 15 minutes after I made the phone call! The customer service & affordability are amazing!!! The problem with my computer ended up being pretty simple, my power cord had a short in it. Andre was able to sell me a new one, but he went above and beyond to check out a few other concerns of mine. He also helped me with replacing the battery, I can now use my computer without it being plugged in! Andre also assisted me with purchasing an external hard drive and explained to me how to use it with Apple's Time Machine software to back up my computer in case my antique does eventually die. My mom and I waited in the shop while he checked everything out and in addition to answering all of my random curious questions Andre and the rest of the staff were warm and friendly! Thank you!!!
