Sent in a PC with an intermittently-functioning part for repair at Nelson. The repairman said the issue was software related and charged us $75 for his time.
When we dropped off the computer, we communicated that a system restart temporarily resolves the issue. Nevertheless, the repairman seemed sure the repair would be possible and quick. Fortunately for us, he called later that day for pickup, but upon inquiring what steps he took to resolve the issue, he mentioned a restart was involved in restoring the part to working condition.
As we feared, upon leaving the store, the part in question immediately stopped working again. We reached out to Nelson within 10 minutes of leaving the store. They informed us that if the issue had not been resolved, it couldn’t be software and must be a serious hardware problem which could require hundreds of dollars of additional repairs to restore the part to working condition.
Later that evening we spent a few hours working on the problem on our own and were able to get the part functioning permanently by changing related drivers (software), despite being told by Nelson that this would be impossible.
Unfortunately for us, Nelson charged $75 for his time despite failing to repair anything. We thought we had at least gotten valuable information from him concerning the statement that it was a hardware problem, but this turned out to be false. While very friendly, I question whether or not the repairman at Nelson’s is any more experienced than a dedicated at-home handyman.
