Sheridan College dental hygiene school, my experience. Veterans will pay $5 for a complete hygiene evaluation and treatment. Everybody else will pay no more than $20 and that includes X-rays and a Panoramic X-Ray and teeth cleaning. The student that Cleaned my teeth, her name was Miss Brekyn. It's not just cleaning your teeth it's a complete evaluation of your dental health. The student will take X-rays and a Panoramic X-Ray and use those in addition to a manual exam of your teeth and she puts all of this information into to a computer and at the end can print out to her instructor a complete report. A doctor a board certified dentist evaluates the students exam and the treatment. Miss Brekyn received an A+ from me and a glowing report from her instructor. I am 60 years old and I have never had a teeth cleaning where I didn't experience discomfort. Not this time, I felt absolutely nothing by way of discomfort in any way form or fashion. Miss Brekyn applied a topical numbing agent across the top of my gums and teeth and this nums the area she will work on and you feel nothing. It's just a topical cream that she rubs across the gums it is not a shot with a needle. You never experience discomfort during the entire process. Applying a topical numbing agent is extremely thoughtful and deeply appreciated. My best guess is that dentist just suppose that you must endure the discomfort while having your teeth cleaned and they never offer to apply a numbing agent. I was so relaxed that I had to fight off sleep.
It begins in the lobby with comfortable chairs and loveseats. When the reception desk opens you check in and you are given paperwork to fill out and it only takes about 10 minutes. Your student hygienist will come to the waiting area and call for you and they take you to a dental chair exactly like the one you would see in your dental office and it has a dental tray with equipment with the overhead light exactly like the one in your dentist's office. The student wears all of the biological protective gear that your dentist would wear and once suited up begins a manual exam of every tooth and the student explains what they see using medical terms followed up with layman terms and this becomes the student teaching the patient and I really enjoyed it. I have heard Dental terms like occlusion and occlusal all of my life and I never understood those words she used those words and explained those words and now I know what those words mean. After the manual exam it's off to the X-ray machine and then to the panoramic x-ray machine. You will stand straight up for the panoramic as it rolls all the way around you to create a perfect 180 degree view of your dental construc, the clarity of that x-ray is absolutely amazing and you see it immediately on a computer screen. Now with a manual exam and the x-rays the treatment will begin and she applies a topical numbing agent so you feel absolutely nothing as a matter of fact I had to fight off sleep I was so relaxed. When the student finishes the instructor a board certified dentist will review and evaluate the students treatment. Miss Brekyn scored A±.
If you feel nervous that it's a student working on your teeth then please remember that there is a board certified dentist she can ask any question of right there in the room and the dentist performs the last evaluation.
Every hygienist that has ever cleaned your teeth at one time was a student. I was happy with this experience and it was my pleasure to be a crash dummy.
If you would like to visit then Park out in front of the main building of the college and then go to the far right side and walk down the sidewalk it will be the first door on your left and make an immediate right in the hallway and go to the end and you will arrive in the well-appointed waiting room of the dental hygiene clinic. I found a picture of the board certified dentist and I wish I had taken a picture of the student, Miss Brekyn.
