I am a junior at UNCW and currently live on campus. Up until this year, I have loved the school. However, after Hurricane Florence, things started to go down hill and my love for the school started to fade. Upon return from the hurricane, students came back to trashed student living: housing officials had let contractors into our living spaces, who, as a result, left them extremely dirty, ate a lot of the food we had left behind, and stole items from student's rooms. Additionally, I was just informed THROUGH TWITTER last week that on campus housing will be strictly rising freshman next year and was placed on a waitlist. This leaves me extremely frustrated due to the fact that I do not have a car and finding an apartment close enough to campus to walk will be extremely competitive due to UNCW kicking all of the upper classmen, international, and transfer students off campus. If you are thinking of applying to UNCW, don't, unless you're prepared to be blindsided by a bunch of issues that add onto the stress of being a working college student.

I honestly don't like this university. Wish I never came here. FYI if you are incoming from high school or another university, know that the school will sneak in charges. The charges of tuition, room and board, etc is misleading and you end up paying MORE than that. Not worth it....well, only if you are overly obsessed about the beach. Plus, if you are willing to pay over 7k for housing for a year, go ahead. You can only break your lease if you are transferring out, studying abroad, or if you "sublease" your apartment on campus.

GREAT INSTITUTION FOR LEARNING!!

Nobody attends this school because it's a good school with good programs, they come because it's 20 minutes from the beach. If it wasn't, hardly anyone would go here because it is extremely mediocre university. It's very laid back beachy culture, where most just scrape by. It's rated about 10th in the NC university system out of about 15. They've been in the media in recent years for paying giant 6 digit salaries to program administrators and coaches, but hire out of a temp pool for staff or support positions.

Absolutely the worst school I ever attended. Not a single person there is willing to help with confused students. They charge an arm and a leg for everything. I completely regret ever going to the school. I could write for days all the bad experiences Iv had with the school. If you dont believe me, you will the day you enroll. Avoid this school at all costs! Trust me the beaches and nice campus dont make up for the horrible staff and way the school is run. Start out by trying to navigate their joke of a website and you'll understand this review fully.

Seemingly good school. I’ve been to a few universities before and this one definitely holds the cake when it comes to excellent faculty. I’m extremely impressed by the instructors and their wealth of knowledge of material and actual experience. The only cons are there is barely any diversity on campus, but if you are from an ethnic background, I recommend the Upperman center to engage with other classmates. All the previous alumni I know have gone on to secure great jobs.

UNCW racial profiling

All of the Uncw officers under sgt hodges badge # 016 should be decertified for racial profiling and placed on the Brady list immediately pending investigations.

Son attends here from NJ and has had very positive experiences. He loves it and has a perfect 4.0 his freshman year and is thinking of majoring in chemistry so you know his course load wasn't easy. Also loves weather, campus and all extra activities available. Great school for the money.

the campus police let all the power go to their heads and are overly suspicious of everyone.. they will give you a ticket for litterally anything. also most of them just arent nice.. I don't even drive on campus anymore because I get so anxious I wanna puke. even riding my bike is a risk- they will pull you over on that too. I broke my ankle on the sidewalk and asked for ride home one time and the cop just shined his flashlight on me and stared at me the whole time like I was an alien or something. weirdest ride ever. I should have just crawled home. same cop pulled me over another time and called for backup to search my car for no reason. nothing happened.. i think they just have nothing better to do than pass time by being weird anti-happiness bullies. also parking on campus is expensive, confusing, and impossible.

For all those from points north complaining about out-of-state tuition, please know you are welcome to attend school in your OWN home state. The UNC system exists to educate those from North Carolina with many schools even having certain percentages of in-state students they agree to admit who meet the other requirements. I realize the draw of a school near the beach, but please understand that doesn't guarantee you financial support from an institution, nor does the order in which you apply. This is the case in NC with the UNC system schools as is the case with many other states and their state schools-priority is given to in-state students. The majority of the students come from inside NC and need financial assistance as well as $6000 is not the total cost for 4 years of college as you well know JS. This a NORTH CAROLINA public university for the people of NC as the creators of the UNC system intended. If you need clarification on this, please search Goals of the UNC system, one of which is "serving the people of North Carolina." Please take the entitlement elsewhere...

I give this school 3stars, it's an okay school that is yellow light, conservative. I wish there was more diversity. They are lacking a football team. They need to broaden their horizons some more and have more recruitment efforts with students from other countries and get them engaged to educate the masses.

Suuuuper cheap school cut corners everywhere and charge students for everything they can. Can't wait to transfer out of here next semester. Doesn't bother me when the charge us for printing and charge us obscene amounts for on campus living and food but when it starts affecting my education is when i get pissed. My current Teacher assistant for my Chemistry 102 class is a undergraduate student who is probably only a few classes ahead of me, im constantly correcting her during our supplemental instruction sessions, they could pay a grad student who knows his/her stuff but that would cost them an extra $40 a week so no way. UNCW is known for their biology, chemistry, and physical oceanography departments but their facilities are old (they all still use chalkboards.. first time iver ever seen one in my life) and some flat out gross, its a running joke to call Deloach Hall ( the physics and oceanography building) DeRoach hall because of all the roaches you see running around and the flat out uncleanliness. I'm not being hyper critical just honest, there are a lot of positives. The food though it costs a lot is very good in my opinion they have great vegetarian and vegan options. The Student rec center is par none, best rec center ive ever seen and everyone here is all about health and fitness. They also have a newly renovated math building and a new computer technology building and teaching building but I rarely go into them. Seems like there trying to improve there lacking programs to get more people interested in the school and its at the cost of there well known programs because they know people will continue to come here whether facilities are nice or not. And the staff and faculty are on and off really depends but i guess thats the same everywhere. But hey at least or basketball team makes it to the NCAA tourney ever year and we can afford to pay our coach like 5 mil a year or something.

I love UNCW. My degree in Psychology was worth every penny. I loved the staff, program and I learned a lot about myself. I grew tremendously because of the help of staff at UNCW and working in the Chemistry Dept. I had an amazing experience doing my undergraduate studies at UNCW and wouldn't change it for the world.

Applied for the online RN to BSN program. Submitted everything in time and never got a phone call, email, letter, or anything indicating my admission status. I also called the enrollment office multiple times with no answer. How an educational institution can be this disorganized is beyond me.

Honestly love the school but this review is for green spot in hawks!! and the workers great service, great food, favorite place to eat on campus and the worker joy, brings me joy!!

Second semester in a row where the financial aid staff is ridiculously unhelpful and rude. There's no purpose and even having the office open because you end up having to do everything yourself or get stuck getting screwed over. Especially don't expect a call back if you leave a voicemail because you'll never be able to talk to someone over the phone.

Extremely challenging university. As a former student of multiple NC system universities I can tell you from experience that the students at this campus are much more mature than others students in the state. They do not come here simply to party, but to get a great education and appreciate the natural surroundings the community and beaches have to offer. For those who say many students simply come to this town for the surf and beach lifestyle, you are correct. However, those students who simply came to party, surf, etc. don't last more than a semester or two on campus. As for the faculty, not all of them are perfect, but if you show them that you are willing to learn and put in the time, they will reward you for it. Stick to the course catalog you were given as a freshman, be responsible for your own class selection, don't simply count on or blame your advisors for your oversights.
