(Spelman Grad class of 2018) While attending Spelman, it’s easy to just go through the motions of being around by nothing less than the top intelligent and beautiful black young women for all over America and the world, and prominence of Black culture, how easy it is to accomplish your goals, and the eye-opening coursework of all majors. It’s easy to complain about 1-2 freshmen dorms that don’t have a/c, visitation policies, tuition cost, workload, etc. But it’s once you graduate from Spelman where it’s difficult to disconnect. Spelman’s campus itself is a geographical bubble, a safe heaven for young black women to become educated, learn about themselves, network, and feel safe for yourselves and family (idk who those lil girls were who did the hate crime of assaulting LBGTQPAI+ members but they were heavily frowned upon from the institution and 99.999% of students and professors). For me, after graduating and being forced to move out permanently, without a lottery for next year’s dorm was truly an eye-opening of how attached I’ve become while going through the motions. I don’t want to state everything Bc a lot about Spelman community is sacred to Spelmanites. Nevertheless, there’s no place like Spelman, my advice for future/ current students is to never get caught up in the small trials that you face in this school, bc it’s nothing compared to the “real world” that you’ll face once you graduate or (god forbid) drop out. The tuition cost is a huge turn off for many, and I understand why in today’s economy. But you’re one of the few who gets accepted, definitely do not turn it down. When it comes to Spelman v. Harvard/Columbia or some other PWI ivy league institution, at least at Spelman you’ll be appreciated, and any frustration you receive from others on campus is coming from a place of love and empowerment ( and not race bias). I come from a (very) low-SES background, and as a graduate of THE illustrious Spelman College, the $116k in debt was well worth it, and id NEVER wish to replace my education here with some from a state, community college or PWI university. #HH
