REVIEWS OF University of Colorado Boulder IN Colorado

Julia Manchester

Ridiculously expensive, advisors are little to no help, the stearns dorms need to be re-done, and everyone cares about partying. Little to no diversity, and the food is quite awful.

Arjun G

Just graduated from here and set to move to Seattle to work at Microsoft. Amazing doesn't quite cut it. Before that though, I wonder who reads the reviews for universities on Google. Shouldn't you have done a bit more homework on where to study than simply googling it? The facilities offered by CU are second to none. They will make you feel at home from day one. Being from the school of engineering, more specifically from Computer Science, I can honestly say that the department is soon going to break into the top 5 in the country (in my mind, it already has). Lots of opportunities for students to either go down the path of research path or the industry path. Boulder has a booming startup scene along with the presence of all industry bigwigs like Google, Microsoft, NetApp, Cisco, EMC Corp etc. For anyone considering Computer Science, you will be well rewarded here.

Beatiful campus, courteous staff, and an awesome city! We visited CU and walked around the campus just to admire how massive the campus was. Tucked in the mountains of CO, the campus alone feels like a small town rather than a school. We checked out an art exhibit, rode some bikes, saw some football practice, and took in the outdoors lifestyles of the locals. Room for improvement: A more guided visitors guide outside and within the campus.

Chethan Kumar

The most beautiful campus with mountain backdrop. Amazing building architecture.

If you didn't attend CU Boulder like "Vishnu J."'s bad review, then you can't be one to say that it's a bad school. You're probably just mad they didn't accept you. I've been to many college campuses and CU Boulder is by far the nicest one. It's one of few that kept its architecture theme throughout the entire campus, which by the way is from Tuscany. It was the best years of my life and would do it again in a heart beat. Great student government, great programs, great classes, and a few weird professors here and there.

A great school for a writer-to-be! It serves as the backdrop for my MADE OF STEEL chapter in my forthcoming Coming of Age book. The varied activities and the dorm experience were terrific. Plus, I was one of the original streakers on campus back in the day.

I have attended CU Boulder since fall of 2014. This campus is incredible, easily the most beautiful in the state. The Hill is poppin most weekend nights, with good food and generally good vibes. Boulder is a beautiful and unique place, and I highly recommend it for the young person trying to find their way in life. That being said, this school is pretty tough to meet solid, real people at. Superficiality is incredibly real here, and honestly all of the out of staters who are given a blank check by their parents dull the experience a bit. If you are looking for a true Colorado experience (coming from a native), go to school elsewhere. Overall though, I am extremely glad that I choose to attend this school. The engineering school is very, very solid, with an abundance of great professors.

Did a college visit summer 2018 with my twin boys. The campus is beautiful and the immediate area around it is fantastic. No students there yet, but the location made a major impression on 2 potential applicants!

From my experience talking with my girlfriend, the flaws in University are very apparent and incompetent. The community surrounding certain programs (such as computer science) are toxic and most people stick to their group. The general workload within certain fields is absurd, the way the university handles students class schedule is poorly done.

Im a freshman here in the Leeds Business School and I am having the time of my life. Amazing academic content, faculty, and resources. Not to mention the amazing culture and people. Lots of fun.

Chase Pennoyer

Minor concerns about the school's prioritization of sports over academics but overall it was a great experience. I also got a job right out of school so that helps.

Kristy Robinson

a really beautiful campus. love seeing the mountains in the background.

Tanner Dalzell

The academic advisors do not know how to get back to their students in a timely manner and when they do finally respond they then taken another 5 days to reply to that email as well. They are constantly having their students switch advisors starting the cycle again and again being little to no help to their students who are paying an insane amount in tuition. CU Boulder needs to either hire competent advisors or they need to hire more incompetent advisors to make up for the rest of the work that is not being done.

All four of us siblings graduated from Boulder in the seventies and eighties. One sister went to the law school and did very well as a patent attorney--but she is a scientist as well. Her major was Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology. She is looking at Boulder for her son, now, and we were discussing how lonely and impersonal that very large campus can be. Probably because of that, I sent one of my children to Xavier University, a Jesuit University in Cincinnati, and he did very well there--it is small (about 6,000 students) personal and was set up to address his learning issues. Although he is dyslexic, he majored in Japanese and Asian Studies. He taught English in Japan for a year. He is now working in hotels hoping to be a GM of a large hotel someday. My daughter went to Boston University though she looked at CU and DU. BU is a huge university, but unlike Boulder, Arts and Sciences admits about 6000 students. So she had the big school atmosphere in the exciting city of Boston, but her college was far more personal and accessible than CU. She did very well there. Her degree was in environmental policy and she got a job right away with the Army Corps of Engineers. She worked there for a year, but hated it so much, that she started experimenting with making liquor. Through some contacts she formed, she found a job in a "craft distillery" in NC, and now she makes whiskey all day. Loves it. Makes money. I also graduated from Boulder from MCDB and went to medical school. It was an experience I would not repeat. The third sibling graduated from Electrical Engineering and worked for the FAA until he retired. The fourth would say nothing that I could write down about her Boulder experience-- she was a party animal, flunked out and was angry at all of the remedial work she had to do. Boulder is a beautiful town but downtown Pearl Street looks exactly like it did in 1968 when as high school students we used to sneak up there to be cool. So, if you're the kind of person who is a self-starter, doesn't mind loneliness, is able to join groups or sororities or fraternities in order to be less alone, you'll probably like the "wide open spaces" of Boulder. If you are self-disciplined you will use the excellent academics well. If you are not, you will be sucked into the party circuit and be lost to the world (not a joke). If you have any kind of learning issues--learning disabilities, Boulder is not for you. Try the University of Arizona at Tempe. If you'll need a lot of assistance at first, look at the College of Mt. St. Joe in Cincinnati, It sure isn't Boulder, but it will help you transition to college.

Enjoyed meeting Dr. Johnathan Bravman. Concurred with part of his recommendations, his knee stability assessment- not so much...Then again, it's hard to turn off 'involuntary gaurding' in the presence of greatness, lol. Not sure how I feel about being knifed while unconscious, also not sure that he thinks it's necessary, oh well. In all seriousness: Goodness, what an incredible facility this place it is...What an incredible staff. Hope for more there, e.g. massage, deep tissue, etc., someday soon. And, to think I was here for a Sooners game back in the day with some of the other Boulder bubble verts...('locals'). Sure glad mom went to this medical school (Denver). - Still a fan... Hart CPT

The campus is beautiful and the CEM graduate program is ranked in the top 15 in the country. The graduate program has a great culture and the professors seem to love their work and are respectful and genuinely concerned about the success of their students. The in state tuition rates are very reasonable for the quality of education received. My family and I have greatly enjoyed our time in the area.

Ash Darbin

I went for the taming of the shrew and it was amazing and all but I got a "parking warning" (no fine) for parking in a lot with a posted sign that says the paid parking or whatever is not enforced past 5pm. I arrived at 7:30 pm. Are you serious? Surely you don't need to patrol parking lots when you're not even enforcing the goddamn paid parking.

Tim R.

Famous for its lack of parking and draconian crackdown on 420 gatherings, the University of Colorado is a perpetual middle top tier denizen in the Playboy rankings, which is more than I can say for its academic ranking. Though there are occasional pockets of excellence, the corporatization of this once noble University has rendered it bland and toothless. Maybe someday they will drop football and get serious about academic excellence, but the tail continues to wag the dog at CU.

Dear whoever it may concern, I feel absolutely crushed by reading different e-mails from the university. The admissions team lack understanding between them and especially the woman that I had a conversation with on the phone. I asked her for her good name and she replied with "have a good day" in the rudest tone I have ever heard. The school might be rated well with a decent academic record but they are extremely rude and do not know how to treat people. I hope this matter is taken seriously because it's a shame for a university of your level to treat any human in this manner. Kind regards, Will Newham.

Bader Sarhan

Great and huge university

Sam Vier

This school cares about the bottom line only. Education is not a priority. Switching instructors during a class multiple times and administering exams that are not consistent with the class syllabus are common practices. Veterans being denied the same class opportunities that other students have is a perfect example of this schools priorities.

We visited campus to attend an event at the Planetarium, as well as the Observatory. We had time to kill while waiting for the Planetarium to open so we rented bikes from a nearby kiosk and rode around campus. The campus is extremely clean and inviting, and is very bike friendly! It sits at the base of the mountain, so it is very picturesque.

I actually got my degree here in Environmental Studies a few years back. I ended up taking classes through the engineering department this year and it was then I realized the quality of teaching had drastically fallen. In the fours years I attended, at least in one class each semester, there was a professor that really gave the impression she/he cared about the students. In the engineering department or maybe this is the direction the university has taken, there was not one teacher that really cared about their students. The problem lies with both the professors and the university. The university hires professors based on their research (aka money) each will provide (as more than one professor has explained). Then these people are required to teach classes. So the majority of them do the bare minimum to present the material to students as their research is more important. Thus many "professors" do not have the drive to teach their students. This is incredibly prevalent in the engineering department. It was a bit deceiving at first because the engineering department boasts quite a few accomplished, world renowned researchers, but they are just that, researchers, not professors. I actually passed my courses this semester, but I chose not to pursue a degree at this university. I'm a tad bit surprised at how far the university's standards have fallen since I've graduated. If you don't believe me, check the top 100 universities world wide for each degree offered; the University of Colorado at Boulder fails to make the majority.

Bigben Siampaints

One of the largest campuses i ever been to, lot of parking lots but hard to find one as visitor parking, traffics in this area always a mess unless school break.

Andrew Kutzler

One of the most beautiful campuses in the country located in a magnificent setting. Love this school, the engineering school is one of the best and the students are a lot of fun. Don't understand any of the whiners on this site, can't think of a better place to go to college. If you could moved the entire campus and faculty as is to California it would instantaneously drop the admission rate down into the low 20 percent due to the competition to get in. Academic ratings would skyrocket with no changes to the programs. Look at UCSD, UCLA, UCB and UCSB what they have that Boulder doesn't is a state with 40 million people killing themselves to get into one of their better public universities.

Extraordinary!!!

Tanner Soykok

If you're not in the Business or Engineering school you're wasting your time and money. Zero exposure to companies outside of those fields, and the career counseling is a joke. Seriously, If you want a job right out of college you're screwed unless you're in one of those two programs (even a STEM degree from the A&S college is close to useless). Also no matter what anyone tells you, your study-abroad credits will not transfer. And lastly, 75% of your classes will have 200+ people in them. The quality of education is severely lacking, but if you're just looking to party until your parents stop giving you money this is the school for you.

I went to CU for grad school and CSU (Fort Collins) for undergrad. The difference between them is night and day. Seriously - take a day and tour each campus. I'll be amazed if CSU doesn't feel more welcoming, vital, and interesting to you (and/or your children). Some good things happen at CU academically, but they happen in spite of the administration and the toxic environment on campus, not because of it. Avoid.

What a beautiful campus and community. We visited the school to check it out for my daughter, she fell in love and it has moved to the top of her wish list. My only worry for her is the size and the increased chance she will just become another number.

Class of 2015, I would highly recommend the INVST program above all else at CU, the school could improve how they handle campus housing for freshman, but I had a really great experience my last three years.

Beautiful campus. Must see if you’re in Boulder.

Terry Campbell

I spent eight years after my undergraduate degree being an elementary art teacher and hating it, but slowly working on my paintings so I could apply to graduate school. During my interview for CU, I was asked questions about my paintings I had never heard before, questions I couldn’t answer. As hard as it was having the rug pulled out beneath me, the interview felt strangely cathartic, I knew CU was where I wanted to study so I could one day answer those questions I couldn’t at my interview. I believed graduate school would help me find a deeper understanding of the world, my own art and a place that would give me the skills to start my art career. I have no idea if going to graduate school was a good idea. Graduate school has been the most humbling experience of my life. It didn’t turn out the way I thought it would. Now that I’m about to graduate, I feel I finally have the skills to apply to graduate school. After a particularly bad day at school I was reminded of the movie Gaslight, about a woman whose husband makes her believe she was crazy when she saw a gaslight becoming dim. When people asked me what graduate school was like, I would say, “Gas Lighting”. I often felt as though I was going crazy but there is something crazy about making art. I truly believe humans need other humans to grow and those who resist change get stuck. It seems the students that embrace humility get the most out of their time at school or perhaps that’s just what I want to believe. I forget all too often to do what makes me happy and make art that was important to me. When asked what I learned in graduate school I say “I learned where the bar is in the art world”. Meaning what makes art spectacular enough to be special. I have the ability to see the bar now, but have no idea how to get near it.
