This Coffee Shop is classified in the category of Coffee shop.
Charming hipster aesthetic and decent iced coffee, so a good option if you’re looking for some coffee on the downtown mall. Not a place I would frequently go, as the coffee is somewhat expensive and the place was crowded.
Good coffee, service and Cozy atmosphere. I just wish that they had more creative latte options.
Great coffee and friendly staff. They have Ting so WiFi is incredibly fast too. Great study spot.
Horrible service!! Overpriced and mediocre coffee /:
Love the staff. Always friendly. Clean and quiet place that feels like home.
A below average capuccino. Seemed like a place like this would make better. My wife liked the Mocha.
Realy great coffee and oat/bran muffin!
Long time Charlottesville staple for a good brew of coffee. Eclectic clientele and excellent coffee.
Cosy coffee shop with friendly staff and quick service.
Great lattes, super expensive
Always great
I'm not a coffee connoisseur, so I might not be the best judge of quality here. However the staff was really friendly and they had a very novel item that I bought (iced coffee lemonade) and, while it's not my taste, I love that they're willing to give things like that a try.
It is awesome in so many ways 1 my mom works there 2 great food and drinks my fav is the hot coco 3 nice peploe and you can work there
Terrific coffee! Nice service and atmosphere.
As a UVa alumn and Charlottesville native, there is always a running ranking of coffee joints in the back of my mind. Mudhouse is current tops, (occasionally waffling back to Shenandoah Joe's, but that's another post.) Staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the coffee is not just good, it's coffee snobs good but presented to you in an accessible way. On my visit I enjoyed a regular drip coffee and bought a bag of Kenyan coffee. The drip coffee had nuanced acid with mellow undertones of chocolate and dried fruit, especially raisin and fig. The Kenyan coffee was equally enjoyable with a stronger acid profile and more fruity brightness. Besides the coffee the wooden interior with various options from chairs to benches make studying or caffeinated people watching on the down town mall relaxing. Will be back again.
Really good coffee and really good atmosphere. Nice view on the downtown mall. Make sure if you get a large, get it in a to-go cup. You get slightly more.
A people's coffee shop. The music's a little loud (bring earplugs if you want to read), but in general it's home away from home. Scary to think how many hours I must've spent there over the past 20 years!
Absolutely the BEST coffee shop I have been to in all my years. I highly recommend staying in this shop, getting a great deal of items from the menu, and talking to some of their incredible baristas; as they are INSPIRING and phenomenal. Thanks, Mudhouse! :)
Good coffee. Nice atmosphere.
So good.
Coffee was good. At 10am there were no open seats. Wound up sitting outside, it was just barely warm enough for this. Glad they have lots of customers, but maybe try elsewhere if you need a place to do work.
A great relaxing coffee and tea house with delicious treats as well, in the downtown mall.
My biggest complaint with this place is the seating. Chairs and tables are crammed together in a very non cozy way. There is also little room for sitting in a private nook or comfy chair. Otherwise, great location, good coffee!
Every two weeks I place my online order and not only do I get the best coffee delivered on time but I get kind words in my confirmation e-mail & a toy in every package. These folks don't just see this as a job they truly love what they do and it shows. My friends make fun that every time I order I'm paying as much for my two bags of coffee as I paid for my coffee maker......then they try a cup......they don't make fun anymore!
Amazing coffee and atmosphere. This place is legendary all around and has ranked in national competitions. They have nice tables and chairs to lounge inside and outside and they are very knowledgeable about what they serve. Their food and snack selection is limited, but yummy. It can get a little crowded which is a sign of a great cafe, but cam also be a little distracting of you were planning to study there so take into consideration the day and time that you plan to go.
Fantastic! Great food and service, although it.can get kinda pricey. Definitely get one of their cheaper coffees, and they have a station where you can add things yourself. Plus, paper straws!
It's a fantastic coffee shop in the downtown pedestrian mall. Decent amount of space to sit and work. The coffee is great and they have some tasty looking snacks too, though I haven't had the chance to sample them. Only thing, parking can be a bit difficult to get to because of the location, so better to take the bus in or walk in if you live close by.
This place has earned its excellent reputation. Fresh brewed coffee, expertly pulled espresso shots and a staff that truly cares about the craft. If you go to Charlottesville and you love coffee, this place is a must.
I literally go out of my way to make a stop here whenever I'm going near Charlottesville. Excellent coffee and coffee shop food!
Educated service. Love the music and vibe. Got the brewed coffee which was nice and hot. On the brighter side as coffees go.
This is a Charlottesville institution! If you drink coffee, tea, or any type of beverages, you'll be so happy you come here. It's way better than than the giant coffee franchise that everyone knows and I won't mention it's name. All of their drinks are very well made with great care and deliciousness! The ambiance of the downtown mall Mudhouse is superb (all of the Mudhouses are wonderful!). Whether you're meeting friends to have coffee or you're writing your great American novel, you won't be disappointed with the atmosphere. This is one of the busier Mudhouses and can get a bit noisey, but it's also a great place to sit outside and people watch. I love their Matcha lattes they are very well made here! I've never been disappointed by any of their drinks. They also do a really great iced coffee. You just can't go wrong. There is a nice offering of light food as well for a quick bite. If you live in Charlottesville, you've probably already enjoyed the Mudhouse. If you're visiting, the Mudhouse is not to be missed! I highly recommend the Mudhouse you won't be disappointed!
Absolutely fantastic coffee. Couldn’t ask for anything more.
Excellent atmosphere, ample seating, strong and fast wifi. Slightly pricey ($3 for a large coffee post tax, about 20% more than Starbucks), but not terrible. The drip coffee is unique; flavored with honey, lemon, plums, and/or oranges. Not a bad thing, just different compared to other coffee houses I've been to.
The coffee is amazing and definitely very high quality. The staff is great, very helpful and quiet. Perfect place to relax.
Wonderful coffee
I felt it was over capacity....but the price was right. I almost fell on an errant chess set that had been just left, unattended, on the floor.
Staff is friendly but their coffee isn’t great and it’s overpriced. Always packed with UVA students who take up double the required space to enjoy a coffee and muffin.
Great place. Friendly staff. Good coffee
Great coffee, lattes, and bakery items. Cool place to sit and study/read on the mall
Best Latte I have had in the mid-Atlantic region. If you are in Charlottesville i recommend stopping in.
Wonderful spot for coffee and a light breakfast, plenty of seating for individuals or groups, pretty quick barista service, fantastic coffee with lots of great options for pour overs, espressos, etc. The best pastries we tried were the little “power balls”, the chocolate croissant, and the bran muffin with oats on top. We also had the veggie quiche (small slice but very good crust) and the bacon egg and cheddar biscuit sandwich (very good), which were fresh made that morning. Will definitely be back the next time I’m in Charlottesville!
If I want coffee on the mall, I go here. Great, comfy space, incredibly kind service, and coworking opportunities between games of chess. The coffee, scene, and setting are all great.
Very contemporary coffee spot in Charlottesville's very walkable central district.
The staff is always friendly and accommodating and I always have the fortune of meeting good people here. (Not to mention their coffee is always a good perkup to my day!
The Vietnamese iced coffee was good, but the iced Americano was relatively tasteless.
This place is good and the people behind the counter are friendly.
Good coffee and atmosphere
Awesome coffeehouse! My cappuccino was perfect. Also, has a righteous vibe, this is a must stop.
Cool coffee shop. The staff very friendly. Full of young people. I just loved it.
Great coffee and atmosphere on the downtown mall.
Tons of fruit flies inside the bakery case. It was gross and dirty. Coffee was blistering hot and they don’t have lids to keep the coffee from burning your hands.
Realy great COFFEE, and foot carrot cake.
It's a small place, but pretty cozy. I was there in the evening with a big group and the was only one server so it took a Long time thi get everyone their coffee.
Nice location and coziness. Bit expensive, but on the downtown mall. Great place to meet with someone.
Excellent coffee house. Great music for conversation or getting lost in your work. Nice outside patio when it's nice and a couple of covered spots when it's drizzling. I've grown to love the coffee. It's a light roast and might take some getting used to if you haven't had it before.
I love this place! Admittedly, I have only ever gotten one thing: The Monkey. Maybe I should try branching out, but it's so darn good, I can't ever seem to do it. The atmosphere is cool. There is usually a line, and it's a bit difficult to navigate and find a seat.
Like the place and atmosphere but lacks variety in house coffee and baked products. There was no muffin and no dark cofee.
Best coffee in C'ville . Didn't have a dark roast brewing, but the house blend was incredibly tasty. Can't wait to find a reason to head back that way.
Best place to grab a cup of coffee on the downtown mall, and also easy to find pickup chess games during the busier times.
Charlottesville favorite
Relaxed. Quiet. Calming. Summer or winter people are here. A mix of residents, mall walkers and a few University students. Those sugary treats to the right of the register are all very good also. Important: caffeine based persons can get coffee morning to late evening (10pm).
Good coffee and service.
Very cute coffee shop (has a compliment on the door as you leave the place!) Atmosphere is super cute and inviting. Only sad thing was that the cappuccino I ordered was burnt :/
Authentic coffee, serious business... sooo good
Great source for locally roasted coffee.
I love this place! The atmosphere is great and the service is fantastic. I'll continue to be a patron of this establishment as long as I am in the Charlottesville community.
Great coffee but very crowded
The best cville coffee, without question.
Fantastic coffee, knowledgeable staff. A little on the pricey side - and that’s coming from a coffee geek used to DC prices. Highly recommend for a splurge.
Stopped in here on a walk around the mall. Really warm day, the air conditioning in the building was nice, but no seats were available. Looks like it’s a popular place for people to drink coffee and work on their computers (one to a table), which is what a coffee shop is made for. The iced coffee was good, but the frozen latte was a little gritty.
great place to stop when walking down the town mall area. delicious coffee & treats
Designer coffee and lounge chairs, but they need to expand for more space. Great location for coffee on the go as you walk the Mall.
Great coffee and atmosphere. Sometimes hard to get a seat. Folks campout.
I needed a quick morning snack. I saw the high ratings and that it's listed as one of the country's best coffee shops, so I gave them a try. This is definitely not one of the best coffeehouses i've been to. I'd say probably the opposite based on my experience. Between the clueless cashier, the rude barista, overpriced quiche, and over priviledged clientele, this establishment gets a 2 star rating. And why the heck would you destroy a perfectly good quiche in a microwave? I won't be back. Get it together.
Delicious coffee! Great flavor! Cute artist's touch to the coffee.
Delicious coffee, nice chill spot
Excellent coffee and tea in the shopping district...fast and friendly service too.
$3.26 for a 12oz coffee and no refill discount. Well aren’t you proud of your coffee? I lived here years ago and sure the coffee and atmosphere are great, but the arrogance of not offering a refill discount when you’re already the most EXPENSIVE coffee in town... #NOTpriceless #ItAin’tThatGreat
Though not overtly rude, the staff has been consistently disinterested in my patronage and not welcoming at all. That's okay, though, because there is no shortage of coffee shops in Cville.
Excellent coffee, great place to study or chill. But it is quite expensive, which is a deterrent from me frequenting there often.
They have everything a coffee joint should have. The prices are reasonable.
Locally owned coffee shop. They are serious about coffee! The beans , the Brew...but you don't have to be to pop in for a great cup. Also fabulous hot chocolate and speedy Internet.
Good coffee, great location but pricey
Honestly, I'm very picky with coffee. I went in and was impressed with the ambiance right away. Very hip and smelled like coffee heaven. Unfortunately, like most coffee places, the employees were just kinda chilling out looking for things to do behind the counter as opposed to engaging us. Are I offered a black coffee, they handed me a cup and left me to find the percolator ten feet away. The roast of the day was a house Sumatra blend. It was dry and a little sharp. They also didn't have cup sleeves so I was burning my hand. Haha thankfully one of the baristas offered me another cup so I could leave their shop unscathed.
Great coffee, great prices, friendly staff.
I used to like going here but this time, the experience was less than desirable. First, I had to wait forever to get served. Second, the service wasn't friendly at all. I felt that I was inconveniencing the staff just to get my drink. Third, the chai latte was horrible, Starbucks and Wegmans know how to make a good chai latte, the Mudhouse obvious doesn't. Lastly, the price was higher than other coffee shops. Is this what one has to deal with just to have a drink in an over crowded and pretentious coffee shop? I won't be returning.
Fast, tasty, and they have a chess board
Love this cute little place. Ecclectic decor and fantastic coffee. Would visit again!
Best Iced Coffee in town
This is a great little coffee shop. The coffee is good, and the staff is very friendly and helpful, whether you're a local or you're from out of town. Since they're a short walk from the OMNI, make a little time to stop by at the start of your day; I've enjoyed sitting outside and drinking a pour-over during my visit to Charlottesville. I'll make it a priority to stop in again next time I'm in town.
Became too trendy, a bit over priced, always crowded making it uncomfortable. Don't go there much Any More
Got some Nice coffee
This was a very nice experience. The drip coffee was exceptionally flavorful, and my wife really liked her latte. We both had savory pastries that were excellent, and the atmosphere was conducive for chatting, working, or just people watching! On a nice day, it would be fun to sit outside at one of their tables. The WiFi is open and available, which is fine with me. I imagine this place can get pretty crazy, but we went on a Friday morning and it was perfect. We'll be back, for sure.
Great service and coffee.
Best coffee in cville. Chill place to do a little work and get some outstanding coffee. Now that I've left cville, Mudhouse is one of the few places I truly miss from time to time.
Great coffe, nice ambiance. Son loved the smoothie.
The MONKEY is a special treat!
The best coffee in town if you like single origin pour-over
Cosy and hip. Mudhouse coffee roasters Charlottesville. Coffee like espresso, cortado or americano. Alternative milk or the very special MudCup. Very special also the various iced coffee specialties. Try the cake and cookies. Vegan double chocolate or applesauce ginger cake. Free Wi-Fi, of course. All in all :
Was looking foward to a nice coffee before a movie and it took nearly 30 minutes to get a simple cappuccino because he was talking to his girlfriend and ignoring everyone waiting in line. Place wasnt that busy. He never made eye contact. I had to ask the cashier to get things moving which she promptly did. For 5.50 a not that big capp. Not again thank you.
Absolutely Incredible pour over! Super friendly staff
Great local roaster
Quick service and quality coffee.
Delicious coffee! Was very impressed!
Awesome, relaxing environment! Awesome coffee!
Love the space - kind of a warm warehouse feel to it, if that's possible. Solid oat milk latte - a little sweet. Was a bit more expensive than I expected.
I"m sure they have to keep their prices high to stay viable on the downtown mall, but I paid nearly $7 for a tiny "nitro" cold brew that tasted like weak coffee water. The lady that took my order wasn't friendly at all and when I asked if they could make a sweet cream cold brew (which I know is a Starbucks thing but that's why I asked) she bluntly responded, "Uh, what?" When I described it to her (it was obviously something they could make pretty easily, it's just vanilla pumps with heavy cream) she again, bluntly told me, "You can put the cream in yourself." I work as a barista so I know how to handle customer questions/requests and that's not how it's done. Just generally unfriendly and overpriced for the quality.
Updated review since things must have changed in the past few months: I'll never understand the hype around this place. It is often way more crowded than I think its coffee merits. Doesn't provide much seating (admittedly not their fault) but gets almost unbearably loud inside due to the limited space. If you're in search of the basic coffee shop amenities (a place to sit and enjoy a cup in relative peace) avoid during peak times. Thankfully downtown has a lot to offer. Folks rave about the coffee itself but I don't find it warranting the price bump. To each their own though.
Cool coffee shop with a hipster vibe. It can get crowded here, so it's not the best place to get work done.
Staff is super knowledgeable and kind. Tried hot chai tea with hemp milk...so heart warming!
Consistently good roasts. Great service.
Grabbed an affagato there that was delicious. Will come by for coffee next time un area.
Speaking of their coffee alone, l have no reason to speak poorly of this place. Unfortunately, I have just returned to this place to discover that their decor has been changed to entirely consist of pictures of naked women. It's pretty in your face and I imagine the motivation is to be edgy, but I find it in poor taste and frankly demeaning to women.
Great spot. Great coffee. Highly recommend
Coolest coffee house in town, made so by the interesting artwork, frequently changed, and the cool (friendly) people. Also the coffee!
Don't like being shooed out early at closing.
Found out they give a 5% discount to teachers. Pretty cool. Only place i know that does.
Hot cups. No sleeves. Ask for extra cup. Drink your coffee on site. Travel is difficult.
Love this place! It’s a great place to stop by and grab a drink and go, but I also love to sit down and get some work done! The staff is great, Adam is my favorite!! He’s always friendly and so helpful and willing go the extra mile to make everyone’s experience a little better!
I have been stopping in the downtown location for a quick shot of espresso for several years however, this is no longer an option. Mudhouse has apparently made it a policy to refuse to serve espresso to go. I was told that this is because the espresso "experience" is superior when "enjoyed" the way they want you to enjoy it, which is apparently slinking in the corner trying to avoid running into other patrons who crowd the tiny space. I think their pretentiousness has finally reached the level of loving the smell of their own farts and thinking that you should too. I'll just go by Grit which is across the street and lets me have my coffee however I'd like it.
Very quiet and cozy coffeeshop in the downtown mall. Friendly and polite staff.
The mud house rocks
Overpriced. No discount for reusable cups. Small portions. Pretentious. Good coffee though.
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. The Espresso is good too, a little too fruity in flavor for my taste, but not too bad. Overall, very good place to grab a coffee.
Quality and Service has dropped of tremendously in the past few months. The baristas used to be so upbeat and proud of their work; now the staff all seem glum, and the coffee is no better than Starbucks. The foam is sudsy, the milk is too hot or too cold, the espresso is sour, and there is no discernable difference between a latte and a cappuccino. Every now and then I'll get lucky and get a good latte, but it's pretty rare. Walk the two more blocks to Mili for a great cup of coffee, it's worth it. The baristas are very talented, the coffee is roasted in house, and the service is friendly. They also have badass baked goods and I hear the sandwiches are amazing.
Messed up on my girlfriend's order, my drink was way too sweet, and they took a long time. I know they have to grind and hand press the espresso and all that jazz, but so does my regular coffee shop and my regular coffee shop doesn't take that long.
A good mocha and quick service
Best coffee shop on downtown mall. Always crowded. Fast wifi.
Delicious if you like chocolatey coffee.
The most pretentious coffee shop I’ve ever been to. Refused to sell espresso to go because it would ruin the tasting experience if it wasn’t in a ceramic mug! I was told “just like you wouldn’t be served a glass of wine to go, we don’t serve espresso to go.” first of all, wine is alcohol not coffee and there are laws in place to prevent that. Coffee is coffee and should be served how ever the customer prefers. I try to support local but I will never go back to this place. GRIT coffee shop is a block away and they are HAPPY to sell you espresso to go.
Cozy atmosphere, nice staff, really cool art on the walls when I went. They give refills for pocket change (.50 for a small, a couple cents more as the size goes up). Only wish there was a little more room for seating, it's a nice place to read/work so it seemed a little crowded when I went. Overall good coffee at a decent price.
Good flavor blend. Nice atmosphere.
Best coffee place in Charlottesville
Good coffee. Quick and friendly service.
The hot chocolate is delicious and not too sweet, exactly the way I like it. The latte is on strong side but good. The atmosphere is authentic and cozy.
Nice little cafe in downtown mall c-ville.
Nice atmosphere!
Good coffee. This location is a bit noisy; I recommend the other Charlottesville location.
Best coffee in Cville. It is the only coffee I can drink black. Their Worka Ethiopian is out of this world!
Absolutely superb espresso here. I'm only in Charlottesville a few times a year but I always make it a point to stop by here and get a shot, you should too.
Best coffee I’ve had in years. Got the same latte for 3 days in a row while in town. Wish I was closer or that they had other locations. If you love coffee, go to Mudhouse!
Wonderful cappuccinos!
Great vibe and delicious and varied coffee options. However, I wish there were more outlets available to charge electronics. Loved the music as well.
Not enough room for everyone to stay and enjoy themselves.
Good coffee, fun shop. We came at the height of busy on a Saturday afternoon, so we did have a decent wait in a crowded store. However, the staff were composed and kept things moving. I had a drip coffee, which was very tasty. A little bit of a cocoa aftertaste, which I enjoyed. My daughter got an iced mocha which was delicious; a good balance of cocoa and sweet. And my wife got an iced chai with soy. Nothing special about it, but still good. They only have soy and hemp alternatives if you don't drink dairy, no almond. Clearly this is a popular spot with the college folks too; almost every sitting customer had their laptop and text book. I wouldn't hesitate to go back, but might look for another nearby spot if it was too busy.
Great environment for a quiet cup of coffee, relaxed meeting, or writing time. Had the quiche and cappuccino, both top notch.
I love the environment and the quality of the products. Thumbs up
Great atmosphere, love that you can get a pot of tea.
Coffee is good, but every seat is taken by people with laptops. I’d skip it unless it’s a to go order.
Had Mudhouse drip brewed coffee. Stood in line for a few minutes, but it was worth the wait.
Good espresso, comfy atmosphere, and friendly service. Gave it 4/5 due to it being about 25% more expensive than Milli. Will continue to occasionally patronize their establishment though.
Excellent coffee and very nice staff!
Nice coffee shop with a cozy vibe. Delicious muffins and the coffee was good. Really sweet and friendly staff but it was very busy when I went on a Sunday morning. No places to sit and a lot of kids so I found it a little much for a Sunday morning. Also it was difficult to park so had to pay for parking a few blocks away which was annoying. Otherwise, it seemed like a solid place
I was very satisfied. The coffee roasts are on point, light to medium. Some places that offer pour overs don't do so hot at going the process correctly, but not this place. Two days and two baristas later, they took their time, let the coffee bloom and made me a perfect cup. Thanks baristas! I also got a shot of espresso which was extremely bright and juicy, another delight on my visit. The pastries looked creative and the staff were very helpful and were not pretentious, which can be hard to find in craft coffee shop. Great work folks, thanks for giving me a place to go on my Virginia travels!
Best place to grab a cup of coffee on the downtown mall, good atmosphere will return! I also work right next door. Ashley is the best employee she always knows what I need as soon as I walk inside!!
This is where you want to go for coffee on the downtown mall.
Very nice coffee shop to stop by and visit. The only downside is parking because of the location you'll most likely have to pay for parking. But there is plenty to do in the area and make it an afternoon.
First visit to the Mudhouse- was so taken with artwork, by local artist, Daniel Curnutte, that we'd go back for coffee just to see more of his work. Beautiful day on the downtown mall.
