Very quaint coffee and tea house that truly captures the beauty of downtown Salem. The staff are always extremely kind and they always offer some of the bet service of anywhere in town. Mill Mountain is truly an incredible business
This is an awesome place to go have coffee, very friendly staff and the people are just really chilled out and nice, I love E. Main st. I lived above tarpleys appliance store for 5 years, and I used to frequent Mill Mountain and also I love that across the street is Brooks-byrd pharmacy, where you can get the best orange aids in town! And did I fail to mention, the farmers market and the library all in one block! :-)
Good food, comfortable atmosphere, nice people, and of course great coffee.
Always my coffee shop of choice. Great food and friendly staff.
Excellent prices, great food and drinks, and a wonderful staff. The perfect college coffee shop.
Amazing workers and coffee
We made the unfortunate mistake of referencing Google reviews instead of Yelp... This place was nothing short of forgettable (once I get over my initial annoyance at how utterly garbage the service and food were on a slow Sunday morning). We placed our orders for a latte, a cappuccino, 2 breakfast wraps and the order of french toast. The coffee drinks came out within 10 minutes. 40 minutes later, we received the food, after inquiring on the status at the 30 minute mark. Talk about expectation v reality... Lets start with the most egregious... all of the food was COLD. The french toast came with 2 slices, some maple syrup, and a "bacon" accompaniment which was basically a crisp... that happens when you overcook pre-made/pre-cooked bacon. Gross. The "sirloin steak", egg, and provolone wrap was tragic. Uncooked/raw red onion and green pepper wrapped into it, the egg looked browned... the Cowboy wrap was the only one that came out decent. It had black beans, hashbrown, egg, and some type of meat. Verdict on that one - "it wasn't bad." My recommendation to Mill Mountain... please stop serving food if you can't deliver on the most basic expectations (timely preparation and execution). Stick to the coffee and pre-sliced baked goods in the display and you should be good. Also, please consider dumping the styrofoam...
We've stopped here twice now and can't wait to come back again; a perfect coffee shop, great food.
Great coffee and food
Got a burger and it was good. Unusual for a coffee place.
Just really good house brewed coffee.
Ice coffee is very good. However hot coffee is never as hot as it should be as they keep it in thermoses.
Everything here is yummy. Service is great too
Nice local coffee shop, better coffee than Starbucks
Great service great selection of coffee
Great coffee and service.
Great coffee and yummy sandwiches and breakfast burritos. Plus, the staff are really friendly.
Try there blueberry pie milkshake. I don't like blueberry pie but this shake is good. The xogge is great as well.
One of my favorite coffee shops. They have a couch right up next to a window and the last time I went it was pouring rain; reading a book there while drinking coffee was the perfect afternoon.
First time at this location. The house coffee was excellent my English muffin was delicious. The atmosphere is what you expect from Mill Mountain Coffee.
The restaurant is clean, looks nice, and has a meeting room in the back, apparently with a large flarscreen TV for sharing media. The drinks were wonderful. The food varied widely. One friend's hamburger was raw until sent back as it had apparently not been fully thawed before cooking. The rest was very tasty and well cooked. The food was brought to us missing on the side sauces for two and missing any silverware as the person assumed we'd gotten our own as we would have if we had been told. My dish was tasty, but I ordered and paid for shrimp only to be served chicken without being consulted first.
Tea coffee and treats what more can you ask for
Always great. Love the coffee, the food, and the atmosphere.
Coffee and a Pistachio Muffin. No need to thank me, you are welcome.
Loved the staff though is a little busy on Fridays during 3 to 4 from the middle School during the school year
Coffee was good and a nice space to enjoy it.
Great vibes and great coffee.
Stopped in for coffee and breakfast. Service was good. Coffee was fine. I had the cowboy wrap. Tasty, but a little dry. Could have used something, maybe some Chipotle mayo. Nice atmosphere. Worth stopping.
Home for the holidays and happy to stop by one of my all time favorite coffee shops. Drinks were excellent as always and was happyha surprised to see an expanded food menu. Lunch and two drinks was perfect!
Friendly staff, great atmosphere, it's never too busy, plenty of places to sit, what else can I say? This place is awesome and the coffee is amazing!
Had their hot apple cider with caramel and something else I can’t remember but it was quite delicious!
Ambiance here is nice but service is lacking in knowledge. The barista that was to make my beverage did not know what they were doing. I ordered a simple drink, an americano (espresso and hot water). The barista pulled a shot and after the shot finished, simply turned the machine BACK ON with the used coffee puck still in the portafilter. This resulted in a watery under extraction taste in the cup, it was undrinkable and I had to throw it away.
Not worth the wait. Ordered a scrambled egg with sausage, green peppers, and home fries. It took over 30 mins for my order. Not pleased with the service at all. Have been to several location but Salem on Sunday mornings has gotten slower and slower.
Love it. Staff is so friendly and they know what they're doing. Excellent quality coffee.
Great cappuccino, and smoothie was delicious. Atmosphere was great. Fast internet
Great place for coffee. Lots of selection of coffee for purchase. Great people
They haven't really done me wrong ever! Their breakfast is great and their smoothies are great. A great treat especially for the Roanoke College crowd!
Actually suprised by how much I liked the place. It has a certain vibe it, but it's nice. I was thinking the menu would be just coffee associated drinks, and little sandwiches, but they had burgers, fries, smoothies, a wide menu range to be honest. And the price is great as well. Only thing I wasn't a fan of, was that dogs were in the restaurant sitting on the floor while their owners ate; I don't like people serving food to me, and at the next table someone's pet is scratching away. Other than that, you should give this spot a shot.
Understaffed but it was New Year's Eve Day. Well made latte and cinnamon bun was delicious but would have been better warm!
Devon is the man... Also the rest of the staff is great to deal with Food is out of this world along with the coffee..
Coffee within walking distance attracts the Roanoke College crowd. Lines can take a while.
good coffe...i really recomended it
Muffins are good, coffee was ok
Great food and beverages!
Visited this location of Mill Mountain Coffee for the first time in a couple of years. Had about 45 minutes to spare before meeting someone at another location and was going to have a treat and read for a bit . Unfortunately I was disappointed. They have remodeled the location making it feel larger and more spacious inside. However the quality of the refreshments in my case a beverage and pastry were subpar and not equal to the value paid in my opinion. The dessert case was not very appealing in appearance being at least partially half empty. The glass and the empty areas were messy not real clean in appearance and the labels for the products therein not easy to read or follow in connection to the product they represented. The beverage I got was supposed to be a cooler which is expresso half-and-half ice and three flavors to make it taste like a banana pudding. To me it simply tastes like iced coffee and milk, no unique flavor at all. The cake I bought once I went to eat it tasted dry, old & stale. I expressed this to the staff that served me, that I did not care for it and could I exchange for another item of pastry. The server was polite yet seemed befuddled for response asking "you mean change for something else to eat?". I responded "yes I do seek a sweet item and I figure that is easier than you refunding me." She responded, " well yes I can replace but we cannot do any refunding. We do not do that." This kind of surprised me because I surely expect credit if I seek it for a food item that is not of a quality that I would eat it. She was polite making me aware the item I was switching to obtain, a cherry/ cheese danish was not equal to the cost of the cake. When I asked if there were any other items coupled with the danish that did equate in value she suggested a cookie. When I inquired what kind of cookies do we have she responded "they are written there (on the case glass is what was meant)." There were 6 or 7 cookie names written on the glass, in not real neat and now smudged handwriting but only three rows of flavors available & they were not positioned where they matched the cookies that remained. I did ask specifically a flavor and got one. The staff person thanked me for my understanding about no refunds and being willing to seek replacement. I ate the danish and cookie because there was not anything wrong with them but in my perception they were of cheap variety quality, like anything you could get in a box from a dollar store; certainly not worth the price charged here. I will not likely come back to this location anytime soon.
This is a great place to visit. Whether you're meeting friends over coffee or just want to relax by yourself, Mill Mountain has the perfect vibe.
One of the best places in Salem for excellent coffee and food. I literally go here every day I'm out.
Great coffee! Great food! Great place to study or get work done!
Amazing place!! Cozy and has so many things delicious!!!
Ok coffee
Great place to meet with friends!
Deliciousness with shiny happy people! They made me an espresso chocolate mint milkshake thing that was divine. Great service, atmosphere and coffee.
Great place to get a drink and a snack when they have something new to try, decorating is great and paintings are on sale from local artists add a lot to the atmosphere. Give it a try you won’t be disappointed!
Had a veggi wrap (was the best)! so was the Atmosphere! Will be back when traveling through!
Super chill vibe, and good coffe. Great location..
Love the renovations! The dessert case is back! Great meet up space
The food is good. Coffee is great. Cost is comparable to other coffee shops.
Nice place to sit, sip, and get some work done.
A lovely coffee shop in downtown Salem. They have coffee, lattes, smoothies, teas and food including baked goods and a full lunch/dinner menu. There is plenty of seating in the shop and also a meeting room you can rent out for use.
Favorite local coffee shop
Big student hangout for Roanoke College.
I spent a morning here while my husband was working around the corner.. I found it to be a very comfortable place, very well decorated, and I loved the atmosphere. So I ordered a berry muffin and an iced chai latte. The large iced chai latte made w/ almond milk that I got was an absolute failure! I don’t think I’ve ever had any that tasted worse.. I tried so hard to keep drinking it, just cuz I hated wasting my $5+ dollars.. but I ended up throwing it in the trash canister on the street outside after drinking about half an inch from the top. I give you 3 stars for the nice building & the berry muffin. But for the sake of your usual customers, please step up your game on the specialty drinks.
Best place to drink a coffe, meet friends and go between break.
Expensive food and drink. Nice atmosphere though.
Awful- I had gotten a coffee that didn't taste good and asked if I could get something else. I was basically "talked down to" by man there who said "ma'am, don't play that game with me." What game?! The "this drink isn't what I ordered" game?!?! He would have NEVER spoken that way to another male and I will not back there again. No woman deserves to be talked down to and treated like she's stupid- especially over something so trivial as a beverage!
Nice atmosphere, good Chi tea
Need better customer service.
Quite place downtown near Roanoke College. Several drink and food options. Stop in.
Great place to study, have a meeting it catch-up with an old friend! I loved meeting my mom her for lunch! And the food and drinks are excellent!
Good food just a few minutes’ walk from campus. Also, I discovered while eating here that Jon can actually hear Garfield in the Garfield comics (picture attached to review). Not a bad restaurant to have a life-changing epiphany in.
Coffee shop with a nice, hometown feel. Standard selection of drinks. Bigger menu of eats, which is nice. I like the big, comfortable sitting area, which includes a couch or 2. If you want a place to come work, or relax or visit with a friend, this can be it!
As always a great place study and enjoy a cup of coffee. Tip if you get a mug it gets a refill.
Excellent experience, professionsl staff, very clean facility. Highly recommend.
Excellent coffee says a black coffee drinker. Lots of choices.
The coffee and food was good and the employees are very friendly
Always a great place to meet up and get work done or catch up. Amazing iced tea!!
Excellent coffee and burgers.
I prefer MM coffee over Starbucks because it is roasted in-house, and you can't beat the taste. I usually order a large caramel latte. The t-shirts they sell are soft and luxe and make a great gift.
Cute place, good coffee. Great place to relax while stopping in the area.
I was forgotten at the drive thru window. I knocked on the glass and ended up calling inside to get my order unapologetically.
Tanglewood on Thursday, Salem on Friday, both great; food, coffee and service all beyond SB.
Currently undergoing much needed remodeling. Hopefully when complete it will be worth visiting.
Great place with good coffee and a ton of seating!
Great place. Recommend anyone visit.
Absolutly loved the coffee here. Its easy to find and a great place to come to work on your computer. A nice open dining area and loads of cooffee choices to choose from. Great prices to. The place was on par if not better than starbucks. Definetly stop in.
I love all locations of Mill Mountain Coffee, Salem OR Downtown locations are the best. When you go try the espresso shake yumm.
Super nice, great coffee
So we went when Salem after five was going on and because of Salem after five they had to close at seven when they normally close at 10 and they closed the kitchen an hour early. I normally love to go there because they have great burgers and drinks, but today was a bad experience. You just lost six people and 50 plus bucks. Good job!!
Great variety on coffee and coffee beans. Nice service and offers sandwiches and other easy food to go with your drink
Good coffee, the vibe could use some work.
Best Mill Mountain around! The staff is awesome and the drinks are great :-)
Good coffee and fresh cinimon bun for breakfast. All served by the pleasant staff who are up at 6 AM just for me. Great start to the new week.
Nice place. Very much a spot for the local college crowd. Coffee was pretty good, wished they had simple syrup available and the counters needed some tidying up.
Excellent drinks and service!
I love Mill Mtn Coffee. Its a staple in my life for coffee and the occasional cinnamon bun craving. Great atmosphere and they have a conference that can be booked ahead for meetings.
Ho hum.
Vanilla Espresso Coolers are the absolute best!!
Cool, fresh, quaint, comfortable. Great drinks & food. Always fun to visit Mill Mountain.
If you visit Salem, Mill Mountain is a place to stop to refresh.
Really nice staff, helped me figure out the town a bit
LOOOOOVVVVVEEEEE MILL MOUNTAIN! A great place to conduct meetings and get lots of work done. The coffee, smoothies, and food are great. The grilled cheese, chicken tenders, and southern burger are my favorites.
Great, friendly personable staff who seem to really enjoy their jobs. If you're downtown and need a quick pick me up, this is the place to go.
They never disappoint. Love the environment, the workers, and the coffee!
I had coffee and breakfast there this morning. The coffee was the medium Sumatra blend and just right for me (I don't like strong coffee). I was able to share half of my breakfast plate with my sister because there was a LOT of food for the price.
My favorite coffee and food is great! Salem
We really enjoyed our lattes and the provision of a deck of cards so we could play gin rummy!
After visiting the other Mill Mountain Coffee location in Roanoke, I was very disappointed by this Salem location. Although they have great coffee to start with, the cappuccino I had was mediocre at best and the rest of the food was stale. The oatmeal was dry and barely cooked and the scone was definitely a day old, despite it being a Saturday morning and a high traffic time. I expected so much better from a local chain of coffee shops which otherwise seems to value its customers and to put out good food and drinks.
I'm giving this a one star for the fact that the two girls working the counter at 1:30 on June 6, were absolutely rude, there was no one in line, and I walk up to order and the brown headed girl gives me this look as if I'm bothering her by coming in to order, they dont say welcome or anything. This was my first time visiting this place and it will be my last! The espresso was good but the brown and blonde girl were very rude and need to find a different career as oppose to being around people.
Good stuff
Wonderful Christmas eve morning.
Friendly staff. Awesome teas.
Nice place to meet with friends.
Both the mocha and the chai were way too sweet. Waste of $6, but the food looked great
Service was weirdly slow, even though I was the only person ordering/waiting. Still made my drink wrong. But, at least they fixed it. Coffee was good
Great coffee and great food
A very spacious but cozy environment. It looks small on the outside but there's a lot of room indoors for small groups. The place features art from a local artist and the decor is very simplistic yet stylish. They also sell mugs, shirts and other items with their logo. I recommend this place to anyone who wants to drop in during the afternoon or lunch break for a great selection of coffee and food.
Try the macadamian coffee, you don't need to add anything! I feel like I am in coffe heaven!
Really unique drinks and a nice atmosphere. I got a hot drink on a very cold day though and it was about room temperature so that was sad. I definitely recommend it though!
The staff was friendly and the place was clean. Our order was not as expected. I asked for a club salad, which was described as being "lettuce, tomato, ham, turkey, 3 cheeses, onion and cucumber". I got lettuce, tomato, bacon, cucumber, 2 cheeses, and 4 slices of unflavored grilled chicken. I am not sure where the screw up occured. I asked for lemonade, which had zero sugar in it, and did have lemon pulp. His requests faired slightly better. He had water to drink, (although he had to go back and ask for it twice before it was brought to him) and a chicken tender sandwich, which perhaps could have been better if the tenders had been butterflied to sit flatter. Pricing was about what we expected, for our meal it was around $25. I wasn't particularly impressed, he liked it.
At 5pm on a weekday which I expect should be a peak time, they only had one employee working. Took 10 minutes to get a cup of coffee and there was only one customer other than me at counter. Milk frother had a towel on it that was stuck to the metal. When he pulled it off the frother nozzle was all white and funky. Didnt bother cleaning it before putting it in my cup. Milk he used was sitting out the entire time I waited. No idea how long it had been out. The guy in front of me didn't get anything but several bags of ground coffee so the milk had been out at least the customer before him as well. Not a clean place. I just paid and poured it out when I left. Gross! Health department should pay them a visit.
Good place, very expensive.
Coffee was very good and there were plenty of options. I also liked the atmosphere. But, I couldn't help but be bothered by the styrofoam and disposable utensils. There were opportunities to improve there.
Was not told that iced cappuccino comes with honey and they would not change it out for an unsweetened one.
Worse customer service in Salem va. I guess they choose who to be cordial with.
Have loved this place for as long as I can remember
Incredible tuna salad, great teas, reasonable prices - well worth the driving the extra couple of miles off I-81.
Quiet, comfortable. Nice. Will be back!
Love the simplicity of this place, comfortable, few nice food items and excellent variety of coffees.
Great place, very friendly servers. Perfect for studying (they have a separate room with a long table for folks who need silence) or socializing alike. My highest recommendation.
Wow so nice. Service is wonderful
I've heard of mill mountain coffee before, and was in Salem, so I decided to try it. I don't know which Mill Mountain came first, but I hope the 'flagship' is better than this location. Who it's for: Someone in town, who just wants some caffeine, and a place to sit Who it's not for: anyone looking for a great cup of coffee The good: The building is cute, and they had a probat roaster in the back corner by the bar. The atmosphere was sparse, but quite, and seemed like it would be a good place to work or study. The not-so-good: thin, watery espresso. Dirty looking bulk bins, with no roast date visible. I asked the barista how they pull their shots standard, as some shops pull doubles (doppio) while others pull singles. Within this, some shops pull ristretto, while others pull standard or lungo. She said they can pull either, so I ordered a double shot of espresso. I was surprised when the barista asked if I wanted it 'long or short'. I asked if short meant ristretto, as that's what I prefer, and ordered that. I expected a great shot, and was disappointed when I received a shot with a thin, watery, white, barely-there crema, and a watery, under extracted, weak taste. As a barista, I was disappointed, and I think more attention to detail, and a little more effort in pulling shots would go a long way. If you're looking for a great cup of coffee, I'd look elsewhere.
This is my go to happy place! Much better than Starbucks because everything is roasted in house and they make their own food items which are just as good as the drinks. Perfect place to hang out, study, and have meetings.
Good coffee choices.
Noisy teenagers ruined what should have been a good experience and not for the first time.
Perfect stop!
Great coffee wish they had a larger dark roast selection
Great service and a lovely location. Lots of big window space up front. Christmas Eve brunch is a must. Always a stop after church on Sunday.
