This Coffee Shop is included in the category of Espresso bar.
Lovely baristas, good atmosphere, decent coffee that only cost $1 to refill. Could spend hours there
What a special Seattoe neighborhood spot. We are new locals in the area & we are loving this place. From the poet's corner to the mean cold brew and tasty pastries, we have been here 3 times in the past week (with plenty of options in the area). We are hooked on this place!
There exists an atmosphere contained by Cafe Allegro. Wide, thick, cottony. Warm. The atmosphere is ideal, matching the wood surfaces and full wall. But something was seen in the atmosphere. It was unwieldy. Long, longer than the inside or outside rooms. It is only seen in the atmosphere. Brushing against every customer, who gives money for coffee and otherwise. Something so long is rarely seen. Inside even rarer. All is reccomended, coffee, atmospheric view, and otherwise.
Great neighborhood coffee region Amazing cappuccino and white mocha. Chocolate croissant and cheese danish had been terrific as properly. The food is delicious, proper, and worth each penny.
This place serves great coffee. Has lots of seating to choose from (upstairs indoor/outdoor). It's tricky to get here the first time, located in the alley next to MOD pizza.
A time honored cafe, part of the coffee culture in the U-district
Like your favorite '90s alternative coffee shop, but modernized with better coffee, better decor, and wifi. Intellectual vibe.
I generally get their cheapest drop coffee because I'm poor, but I keep coming back for the lively and very distinctive atmosphere. It does As weird as it sounds to say of a coffee shop, I really like their tiny first floor bathroom! I find the very efficient design very satisfying.
Seattle icon. Definitely recommend for study space. The pastries are from a box of some distributer outside the city. They are pretty mediocre. The coffee is also fine.
Cute place to meet someone for coffee.
They have a great dirty chai if you like a chai with spice, and a quiet space upstairs that's great for studying.
A coffee shop in the Bohemian/Hippie style with some patrons that have been going since the 80 when it opened.
Very good tea and coffee. The upstairs space is great for studying.
Very friendly staff. Good coffee and great atmosphere. Great to study, spent times with friends and have good times.
Friendly service, great coffee, and unique location.
My girlfriend wanted coffee, which means I wanted coffee as well and I had to drive her there. Once we got in we were happily greeted and promptly served. AND THE COFFEE DIDN'T DISAPPOINT! GO NOW!!! It's a great place to sit and think. I will be back again.
Great fast service with quality in front.
They serve great coffee, with three seating areas. I liked their vintage style and it was clean&quite. But I’m posting a bad review due to my first time visit to this cafe with a foreign friend who was taking pictures of the place and suddenly a women working their ask him aggressively to stop taking pictures of her while he wasn’t even capturing an inch of her. I think a place like that most be treating tourist more nicely. Won’t go their again.
Nice staff, was able to find a spot even at the busiest time, and is a good place for studying, not too loud
I have been coming here for years. This place is a Seattle staple. They offer great coffee and very comfortable atmosphere. Great ambiance for a little cafe
Very authentic coffee
Small, a bit hidden, and a classic one-of-a-kind with great coffee.
Entrance located in an alleyway which is unconventional but nice place to get some strong coffee and sit and study for a few hours. Their pastries always seem like they're a day old but their drinks are bold and earthy and thus amply priced.
Good coffee and food. Very cool and inspiring to work. The internet connection can be very slow though!
The Allegro is a pillar of the University District. The atmosphere is dominated by students, but there is a larger back room where a person can bury themselves. Among the coffee shops on the Ave, this one is certainly the best and most established. Additionally, you enter through an alley!
Great neighborhood Cafe in U District
Great place for seating and study, read, play board games, ... Good price and good strong coffee.
One of the best spots in the U District, right next to the venerable Magus Books. They have choice espresso--especially when cardamom pods are involved--mocha beverages that hold their own, and seasonal drinks. It's also a solid place to study since the vibe is usually pretty subdued and there's a lot of seating options (though not always available). Occasionally, there will be cool distractions outside: I've seen skateboarders and a talented dancer tearing up the alleyway.
Excellent coffee
This a nice coffee shop by the University of Washington. Coffee is fine, nothing special. They have a basket of discounted pastries which I like. A great place to sit and work, or meet with a friend.
I was recommended Cafe allegro by the internet, so I went out of the way to go. The building is awesome, but the drinks and pastries are not. I couldn't even finish my cappuccino
Forget Starbucks. This is one of Seattle's original coffee places☕It's in an alley but worth seeking out. My husband and I had our first date here 32 years ago
The Allegro is definitely a goto spot. The coffee is divine. The atmosphere is serene. People have worked there for a decade or more. Newspapers to read. The definition of a GREAT coffee joint. What's not to love?!
I love these ever since an old friend made them for us, but I find it hard to find in the stores. Naturally, I had to try this place. I was not disappointed. Tried a sweet and a savory trumpet...the maple cream butter and the ham and english cheese. Both were great. Only issue is to check the days they're open. Make sure they're open the day you're down there.
Fantastic coffee
Nice little cafe. Good coffee options. Quiet place.
Charming historical coffee shop near UW. Good but not amazing coffee.
Comfortable and cozy. Great teas.
Good WiFi and the password to the WiFi is damnfinecoffee just as it looks like here.
Great coffee, great food, great place to work on whatever you are up to
Pros: Coffee, ambiance Cons: Service This little gem is tucked away in an alley, close to UW, and is very quaint and cozy. The only thing holding this review back from 4 stars is the service - I have never been in here and NOT been treated with a smile :( Must be finals week... I would recommend this place to family & friends, but warn them to put on their best, infectious smile when receiving their coffee & scone...
In a city of literally hundreds of coffee shops, this is one of the legendary original ones. Hidden down an alley right off the Ave adds to the sense that it is one of Seattle's best kept secrets. With it being just a block from UW and literally adjacent to Magus, one of Seattle's legendary used book stores, this coffee shop naturally has a collegiate atmosphere ideal for long study sessions. Plenty of tables and booths to plop down with some books or your laptop.
Fast service, variety of menu options. Internet can be a bit funky.
Outside you'll notice a decrepit bench next to the ivy-soaked brick wall, but this only masks the glory which is the cafe allegro! A great café due to the staff, delicious drinks and treats, the comfortable yet enlightening ambiance, always smooth music and great artistic works mounted on the wall. The place is clean and comfortable. There are multiple rooms to this coffee house, and even an upstairs level for you to enjoy the morning dew at dawn with your coffee!
Got cheaper americano at starbucks. Nice location, but not the friendliest service. They also chat with each other while taking orders.
Rustic, cozy, full of character atmosphere. Iced Carmel coffee and vanilla lattes were delicious. We tried three different dishes and they all were yummy. Spicy cowboy casserole, farmer breakfast and BLAT. Service was very good, friendly and professional. With tip around $60 for breakfast and coffees for three.
Great coffeeshop near University of Washington campus. The place is small and cozy. I'd like the place but it has limited sitting and always filled with students studying. So finding a sitting place is a problem there.
food and atmosphere is incredible- a Seattle delight!
Great coffee, lots of room to work, can get crowded.
Great local cafe. Very relaxing and social atmosphere, with two separate areas one for socializing the other for quiet reading or what have you. Did I mention the food and coffee? Highly recommended well worth the visit.
not the most awesome coffee on the planet, but good, and the atmosphere, service and pastries are great.
Good atmosphere, sit back, relax, read and enjoy the coffee. Good price and nice staff.
This is our go-to coffee shop when visiting the ave. Everyone who works there is great and the coffee is the best
I walked in with a left over box of mod pizza that I was going to be taking home with me and sat down in the center of the cafe. Immediately one of the women working there said "hey we don't do that here." A bit shocked, I said "oh I will be getting some coffee in a little bit". She responded with a rude smirk, notioning that she wasn't happy. So, because the whole cafe was now looking at me because of the way she initiated the conversion, I felt awkward and out of place, so I left. Coming back with a friend to study, I calmly mentioned that I wish she would have come over to me personally and told me about there no other food policy and I would have gladly finished the single piece of pizza left in the box outside the cafe and then came back in. She then responded "we treat everyone the same." So if you ever go in there with other food on you, expect to be called out by the staff in front of everyone in a rude and extremely direct way. I will never mention this cafe to anyone else or be bringing my business here ever again. I was treated terribly from the moment I walked in the door. If the business owner is reading this review, think about how you treat customers. Maybe instead of reacting aggressively, take into consideration what other people have to say rationally and calmly, then address the situation in an appropriate manner...
I went out with a girl who was way too pretty for me here and I will say it was a nice place to do this
I love Cafe Allegro! One of my favorite cafes in Seattle. Tons of seating, a wonderful, chill atmosphere, roof deck upstairs for outside seating, and the staff are always so friendly! It's nooked in the alley which makes it a bit hard to find but it's quite the gem, for sure.
One of my favorite places to hang out around campus! Great coffee, great staff, lots of seating with good atmosphere all around.
This place is a classic favorite of mine, and is a must-stop for anyone visiting the area in need of some caffeine. The building has stood the test of time, and has a lot of character to it (don't forget to check out the new upstairs patio!). Their coffee is never burnt, and always delicious. Ask about their discounted, day old pastries if you are frugal like me, because they're just as tasty! I implore you to stop by next time you get a craving for Starbucks - because Allegro does coffee better.
Allegro is hidden in the alleyway that runs alongside MOD pizza. I think this place is the best coffee shop on the ave. The cold brew is great, I love the atmosphere, and the service is always friendly and helpful. Their sidewalk sign is almost always funny too.
It's an alright coffee store that isn't better or worse than your average coffee joint. They feature artwork on the wall for sale which is interesting to look at. Very small store.
Cool place tucked away in an alley. Nice patio upstairs
Their staff are a real mixed bag here. The people who work here range from pleasant and cordial to downright hostile. Shame really, it's otherwise a great place. I could probably come back, they make some good drinks and he ambiance is nice, but they're overpriced and sometimes rude so I'm not 100% sure. Also they have no plugs
The place is awesome, it offers a nuance of a warm and mild Seattle. Love it!!
Great coffee.
Winderfull coffee, good desserts, incredible atmosphere, it feels like a secret gem only you know about. Also has an amazing selection of board games that you cant even find on Amazon anymore, like the Godfather Trivia
Among the best espresso spots in Seattle, and one of the oldest. They've got tons of seating space, including a quiet study room, although the whole place is often crowded.
Older café, reminiscent of the old Seattle. It certainly has the atmosphere. Coffee is good.
Original Seattle espresso & a vintage place to hang out in the U.District.
Amazing interior, great classical music, very decadent. Espresso is made of dark roast, so better make it a macchiato. Unfortunately, my demitasse cup was not preheated, as a result the espresso was lukewarm, therefore only 3 stars.
It's a nice space; not my favorite espresso but ample seating for studying or chatting.
Their rooftop patio is one of my favorite spots in the city to write.
Love the alleyway location. Love the upper deck outside seating. Good coffee. Usually crowded.
I came to this cafe during my visit to Seattle and absolutely loved it. Lovely atmosphere! Our barista, Katy, was so kind and warm and gave us some DAMN GOOD coffee. She gave us plenty of suggestions for things to do around town and was a delight to chat with. This lady 100% deserves a raise and every tip you could ever give her. So glad I stopped by here, yummy food and coffee and LOVELY staff. 10/10 would recommend :)
My favorite coffee in u-district. Made well every time. The environment is cozy and nostalgic. Upstairs seating is quiet and good for working. Only thing is the Wi-Fi is very unreliable. Come here to read.
My over easy eggs were prepared perfectly, I've come to find out, over easy can be done a variety of ways. My husband had eggs Benedict and he was extremely pleased. It was so good as well as the toast and potatoes served. Very nice small restaurant. My decaf Americano was very delicious.
This place seemed pretty cool. You have to go through an alley to get there, and the rustic feel was quite inviting. But the staff's interpersonal skills ranged from below average to downright offensive. I was planning on telling my friends about this place. Now the last I'll ever speak of it is to review it here.
Excellent coffee. Quick service.
Cute place, good selection and f coffee and milk alternatives. Wifi was great! There's a bathroom that's decent, also decently clean. It's a bit hidden between two main streets but it's a well lit, clean alley with outside seating. So... Worth the stop!
Delicious coffee at a great price, with friendly service. The location and decor add to a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Plus, easy accessibility from the university make it a favorite location of mine.
Neat large space, a little hard to find with Google maps, fair/average coffee
Good coffee. Very Seattle.
From the a-frame sign on the street, I was expecting Cafe Allergo to be a tiny little hole in the wall coffee place. It's a gorgeous medium-sized cafe with lots of seating and even their own t-shirts. their espresso is good (not amazing) and their pastries range standard. A place I recommend but only if you're in the area.
This coffee shop has a great atmosphere, cool rotating art, and their coffee is probably the best in the U District. As a frequent user of coffee shops in the neighborhood, I began avoiding Cafe Allegro as a study spot because it's too packed on the weekends. They can't help it that they're popular, but it'd be nice if they ventilated the back room a little better (it gets stuffy due to a lack of windows). Conclusion: Nice for a passing visit, not so nice as a regular study joint.
You know, the first time I visited here it was great. They have such a great hidden spot and so much room with their upper level option and cool music and funky chill vibes but then the more I came here the worse the WiFi and coffee got. I won't give up maybe its just a few bad days. But over all worth checking out.
Good roof top
One of my favorite cafes in the Ave. Their chai lattes are to die for!
One of my favorite places to get coffee when I lived in Seattle. Awesome people there as well. You won't be disappointed!
Good coffee. Good atmosphere. I have yet to try the baked goods though
Awesome cortado. Hard to find. Not on the main road, it’s in the back alley.
Great cappuccino, super nice barista, and a fun part of Seattle’s history!
Beautiful beautiful place they made a movie there the other day look it up it's called Champaign I believe about a barista who sells coffee to ghosts
Very trendy coffee place in a developed alley
Just as good as it was when I was skipping class at Garfield and coming here in '96.
Now THIS is a charming, old-school coffeehouse. I don't mean to sound old, but I first went there in the late 1970s, when there were three places you could get espresso in the U-District. (Four if you include the cafe in the Art Building on campus.) The drink that has been known as a "latte" for so many years was called "cafe au lait" back then. While it's nice to be able to buy an espresso drink nearly anywhere, it's virtually impossible for a large chain to have the charm of a decades-old, one-of-a-kind coffee shop. Cafe Allegro has that charm.
Coffee is ok. Service is meh at best...not very friendly servers at times...
Coffee is always good here. Wifi wasn't working but I think it may have just been because of how many other customers were on because everyone else seemed fine. Wasn't a big deal, either way.
Love the coffee .A lot of seating. Long line fast.
By far the best espresso in Seattle. Tucked away in the alley, not to pass up.
I love this little hide away of a coffee shop. The have really nice staff, and fantastic coffee. Not to mention there's a lot of seating, including some outdoor balcony seating. The drinks "for here" come in nice glass cups of variable sizes. They also have some nice pastries for sale, baked fresh!
Unsure why this place is rated so highly. What really turns me off is they don't rinse their milk pitcher in between drinks they just add more milk and steam again and again.
Great coffee and atmosphere!
The original and still one of the best places to grab a beverage and study.
Great coffee and good place to study. If you want a normal hot coffee, be sure to tell them extra hot :)
Going to a coffee shop just craving that latte from the first coffee shop in Seattle only to find out they can’t make you that foamy goodness is quite the bummer, as much as a bummer as this is a run on sentence. But with their charm and a good Americano it’s totally a 5 star experience.
There are so many good coffee shops in this area but this one is my favorite. The atmosphere is nice and good service.
Great coffee. Cool spot, tucked away in the alley. Nice spot to hide away for a while.
Nice cafe for students.
Oldest espresso bar in Seattle. Feel all the deep time layer vibes.
A very nice and romantic place to go for dates or just a hangout with friends.
It seems to me that the staff at this location hates those living in poverty, especially youth. They hide the fact that they are in the same alleyway as a youth shelter. They kick PAYING customers off of the PUBLIC outdoor seating structure if they just happen to be homeless. And worst of all they threaten to call the cops on anyone who compliments their looks.
Cafe Allegro is my favorite place to get coffee on the Ave. The little alley it’s in is adorable, the coffee is great, and it’s near an official UW/eduroam hotspot which means great internet for students. I come here several times a week and enjoy it every time!
Staff are extremely unfriendly. It’s almost like it’s a pain for them to take your order.
The Chai tea latte was so fragrant and tasty! And I love that they have local artists' work to appreciate.
Lovely little shop off the Ave, great couple of tea and quiet place to get some work done.
Best looking alley way in the neighborhood. Somehow manages to be both off the beaten track and attract a bustling crowd of UW types. Drinks are not overpriced, nice place to spend time.
Amazing coffee. They roast their own beans.
One of my favourite coffee shops. Lots of seating, and good coffee.
Excellent -- the church next door should be ashamed for not caring enough about the community to move their shelter entrance to the 15th ave. side. - its as if they persist just to spite the Allegro family.
Love this cafe! Hidden away in the alley so it's a little more difficult to find, but really cool and fun place.
Always crowded with rude staff. Especially the barista with colored hair, I've seen her yelling at someone in line for reading the menu and not walking up to her straight away.
This place is so unique. I'm definitely coming back whenever I'm in the area.
This place is such an adventure. The coffee is intense and so is the neighborhood. It is a little hard to find, down an alley in the u district and surrounded by what appear to be homeless teenagers. But the cafe itself feels safe and cozy and the perfect place to write in a journal, read a good book and people watch. The coffee has a strong flavor, lots of caffeine, and I can't stop going every chance I get
really cool place but there seamed to be a lack of order and efficiency in the way they communicated the drinks from the register to the barista on bar.
Oldest coffee shop
Weaker wifi, and pretty crowded. Really good coffee, friendly staff and neat atmosphere. Can't bring in outside food, heads up.
Great coffee, convenient location and hours, decent wifi, and plenty of fairly comfortable seating. Prepare for it to be busy though
Amazing coffee and a great atmosphere. Chai tea is easily my favorite thing to get there.
Deceptively large coffee shop which touts its reputation as the oldest in Seattle. Spacious upstairs seating provides a pleasant atmosphere to utilize the free WiFi while sipping on well-crafted espresso. Shots are smooth, sweet, and complex - very light body compared to most espresso. Cappuccinos are made properly, pastries are generally good but not outstanding; overall very par for the price. Service felt forced-friendly and customer interaction is kept to a minimum, almost to the point of being ignored. Worth putting up with for the drink quality, however would recommend other cafes in the area instead.
Such a great, hidden, quaint coffee shop. They have plenty of room to meet, study, read, do virtually whatever you want downstairs, or weather permitting, the upstairs balcony! Highly recommend the Mexican Mocha. It is perfectly balanced and tastes delicious.
Great drinks! Even better staff, even when you accidentally break a cup!!! Sorry about that but thank you for being so kind
Amazing and kind staff with a good atmosphere and amazing tea.
This is a large coffee-shop in a back alley in the U-district. It has a lot of smallish tables occupied by students working away on their laptops and is obviously a little off the beaten path. The alleyway itself is undergoing some beautification, possibly lead by the coffee shop and the down-hill end feels okay. the Coffee-shop is just up from Mod-Pizza The coffee itself is rich and smooth, with no bitter notes, and an almost chocolatey after taste that lingers. at $4.24 (12/2017) for a DTL sometimes worth the extra couple of dimes compared to other nearby places.
One of the few remaining unique coffee nooks
Cool environment and great iced tea
One of the best latte I've ever tasted. Be sure to take a seat to enjoy perfectly warmed coffee in a tall glass cup. Sadly I choose take out mostly sigh... Better to approach from South as the North path could be messy and dirty.
Awesome atmosphere, Delicious coconut milk white mocha!!
Cozy coffee shop with delicious drinks and tasty treats!
The place is lovely, the coffee is delicious and the service is magnificent.
Great spot in an alley (not on the main road) serving nice drinks
This is a clean, quiet coffee shop full of people studying. It feels like the kind of place where a writer who was academically respected, but not very popular would say they got their best work done. It's kind of hidden in an alley, so it requires some effort to find. They have good coffee and a nice selection of large cookies as well as other pastries.
Love their chai.
Awesome staff, nice drinks, and relaxing atmosphere :)
Best coffee shop in U-Dist.
Best coffee in U-District after Slate.
Nice coffee shop in the alley, I like the privacy of the set-up. Very cool art hanging and the pasties are delicious. Also as a tea drinker I always enjoy their selection.
Excellent indie coffee shop! They even have beer.
A lot of seating for studying!
The beans they sell are great! Iced tea was also very good.
Cute spot, but espresso was burnt and not very flavorful.
Great little hole in the wall for some pretty decent coffee. Great place for peace and quiet if you're into reading or studying.
Thank the lower case gods this place is hidden away and surrounded by a wonderful and nasty alleyway. Their coffee is, hands down, the best on the Ave. Fast, delicious and strong, just how I like 'em! Anyway, don't tell them I sent you, they don't know my real name.
Comfortable, charming cafe
i sit i sip i study
Hard to find, but good, historic cup of coffee. Either go through the back alley or walk through an Indian joint.
One of my favorite coffee shops in the U-district. The staff is friendly and talkative, as well as quick. All the seating area are cozy and great for getting some work done or having a long conversation with some friends.
Among the best coffee I've tasted.
Their espresso is not to my taste. I like smooth full-bodied espresso (black) but this was almost undrinkable. Rather than the usual bitterness you'll get with bad espresso this was mouth-puckeringly sour. Had to add cream just to make it drinkable.
Staff are hit-or-miss in terms of traditional ""customer service."" Music is also hit or miss, sometimes is loud experimental instrumental etc and others it's nice and pleasant. Despite a lot of students coming here to study/read, I like that the atmosphere isn't all hushed. You can easily have a conversation with a friend or two Their coffee is nice -- I always get a mocha. There is a second floor that is quieter (from what I recall). I often study or meet friends here. Close to campus, so I've even had meetings with TAs here before.
