First time and last time at sugar shack. SEVERELY overrated donuts. Saw a previous review that called them "grocery store" type donuts, couldn't agree more. There's really nothing special about donuts that have been sitting in a display case for an undetermined amount of time. I can't help but wonder if the people rating these donuts so high have ever truly had a good donut. I had browsed the website and some of the flavors looked interesting, so decided to drive on over. Walked in and of course all the flavors I wanted to try werent available. I asked the girl behind the counter how do I order the donuts I wanted to try, tells me I can't so I then ask, so how do I try the donuts on your website... blank stare.

I came to sugar shack today... all I can say is incredible. The donuts were amazing, my whole family was very happy with the donuts and coffee and hot chocolate. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and when they didn't have the donuts in the case we were looking for, the staff member behind the counter went out of her way to go into the back and ice the donuts and make them for us. I was incredibly pleased with this visit and I will be happy to return as a regular customer.

We love Sugar Shack! They've expanded parking, so it's easier to access now. Great variety, almost always busy. Haven't had such great experiences with Luther Burger. We've been twice, and our orders were completely wrong both times. Found it meh, at best.

OK, I hate giving a good place a bad rating, but I am frustrated over product availability. Today was my third visit over the past several months (Since I live Roanoke I only get there once or so per month). I purchased nothing! Wanted cinnamon buns but for the third consecutive time none were available. Asked for Tale Tell dark coffee, no longer available. I am not sure I will go back. I know it will not hurt SS, but it does hurt me not having their cinnamon buns. Business model seems to be "you can have what we offer, but not what you want." Sorry.

We decided on a morning donut run with the family and timed it just right. Only had to wait for one family of four to make up their mind from the vast selection. When it was our turn we decided on individual donuts with a side dozen to take back home. My Toasted coconut was perfectly topped and the cake was airy and delicious. The only thing my son and I couldn't understand was the little girl in the window. She was frowning...doesn't she realize that there are few happier places than an independent donut shop?!?! I hope she left happier.

I live right next to this place and I have been to the one in Richmond and the quality between the two cannot be matched! Better service, better quality, more variety I. Richmond believe it or not! The people at this location are unhelpful, Don t seem to care and "it is what it is".. I will travel 30 minutes as opposed to 3 minutes for food service a long with my high priced donuts!

If you've tried the donuts, you're halfway to understanding the beauty of this place. You also have to experience the friendly (totally nonjudgmental) bakers and staff. This quaint location is the same spot where I once begged for Slurpees. Now my toddler and I can easily spend some time enjoying a treat.

The donuts are mediocre and expensive. They specialize in yeast donuts and mostly ignore the cake variety. However, their giant birthday cake donut is something to behold and not expensive for what you get. For my money, Country Style is all around superior and the king of Richmond donuts. Also, the place can get very crowded with people desperately pondering their meager offerings.

They never have the donuts you want. We went a few times over the past few years and loved their filled donuts. One was cheesecake banana and other cream type filled ones. You go now and it is just plain donuts cover in a lot strange flavors and candies. We won't be back. Very disappointed. We dont live near one and were excited about have a treat with visiting family.

I've had some pretty good donuts in my life growing up in Cali. Someone told me that these donuts were really good. Just because they're big does not make them good. They are big, but they're also a bit dry and they cost more than what I think donuts should cost. They also have too much going on; I don't want a donut with a candy bar on it. I wasn't impressed.

Awesome customized and specialty donuts. My favorite is the maple bacon as you can see in my previous post. Highly recommended. There are all kinds of donuts. Best time to get them is early in the morning when they are fresh. After 6pm it's a hit or miss on freshness. Please like if this helps you.

Usually happy with sugar shack but paying extra for a vegan meatless patty (on here it says vegan egg and cheese which is a bit of an oxymoron). Was willing to have the egg and cheese but to pay extra for a meatless patty sandwich and not get the meatless patty. Really disappointed.

UPDATE: Sugar Shack sees nothing wrong with dirty bathrooms & over a 15 minute wait for a biscuit per their response below. Also another thing that went wrong was as other reviewers mentioned they rarely have flavors in stock even the featured advertised as in shop on Instagram. I ordered 6 of 2 different featured flavors only one flavor was ready so made my purchase & waited for the other flavor to be complete. They left my donuts in the case & almost sold them to someone else, so is 3 issues enough? Your response asking what went wrong is disturbing as if you accept 15+ minute wait times & dirty bathrooms. Sugar Shack USED to be great. One good thing they rearranged the front of the shop for more seating that’s where the good ends. Per all the other reviews the bathrooms are horribly dirty. Also the worst part is they’ve lost some of their better employees so service isn’t what it used to be. Example if you order a breakfast biscuit it will take at least 15 minutes that’s based on 3 attempts it appears to be getting worse as my last visit took 20 minutes. What’s weird is Luther Burger (same kitchen they make biscuits in) can crank out orders no matter how busy they are in a fairly quick fashion & very delicious. The morning biscuit volume is nowhere near Luther Burger’s volume so it is more of a service issue. That said the biscuits are pretty good if you have an extra 15-20 minutes.

This is my favorite donut place in Richmond and the best Sugar Shack around! The donuts are delicious, my favorites around; and they always have new and interesting flavors to try! The base recipe they use in all the donuts always tastes fresh and so fluffy! Today we picked up Honey Lavendar, French Toast, Reeces, Lemon Poppyseed, and Salted Caramel. We loved all of them, but Lemon Poppyseed was probably the weakest link. Maybe a thicker icing on that one would be better? Either way, we regret nothing! The coffee there, especially Americanos, are amazing there too. By the way, the staff here is a hoot! So friendly, helpful, and fun! We love this place!

The donuts where good like usual. But my husband, daughter and I went on the "bring a rubber duck get a free house donut" day. We were told we could only get the classic donuts and not the house by a server who was kind of giving us attitude. We even had to bring it up again to get the one classic donut we did get taken off of our total. So went for free donuts and to buy some, and ended up with a rude experience and practically bringing up an argument to get just one free. It's ruined our experience and we will not be back to this sugar snack. In another note the windows were long in need of washing and they had ants crawling along one of the windowsills (and most inside if not all tables were dirty).

Home made caramel? I HATE caramel. It must be because the cruddy cubes masquerading as the stuff have nothing on yours. Wow! We got a number of the specialty donuts for us and a dozen for the office. Nobody was disappointed. We had to pick up a few more when we went next door for dinner a couple of days later. Staff was very helpful and accomodating.

Been there multiple times and the donuts are pretty good. Especially like the cake ones. If you go there for dessert, know that they may run low on some donuts after a certain time. Just part of the business. Also watch out for the parking lot. Little tough in and out, but they can't help stuff like that. Definitely recommend.

I had been seeing the two locations near me in midlothian and Richmond VA packed during the summer. So I googled them and saw they were a donut shop, so I went today for the first time and got a dozen donuts in different varieties. As a person who is a sweets connoisseur, I would assume eat sweets than food but, these are really not what you'd expect. I tried one tonight with rainbow sprinkles and while they are big, and loaded with icing and sprinkles, they are just WAY too sweet and kind of dry. Even after putting them in the microwave as I like mine warm and honestly for $14 it's not worth it . My parents tried one and they said the same, it's very bread like, and the icing even out of the box is very messy. The biggest turn off is how they boxed them, on top of each other and that didn't help when it came to the toppings and icing sticking together. I am not saying they are bad tasting or not good service, both were fine but, these donuts are not going to be to everybody's liking. So for the price I'd say stick to Dunkin" Donuts or the infamous Krispy Kreme for authentic donuts you'd expect to taste.

Our first time and probably last. We ordered via Uber Eats and the cup of Dark coffee with 2 shots of espresso tasted like colored water. We ordered 3 of each glazed, chocolate iced, maple bacon and caramel sea salt and we received a mixed box. The bacon on the maple donut was burnt. Black and sooty. The iced coffee is the only thing that came correct. Horrible job. UberEats delivery did a good job

If you want doughnuts if variety and handmade, this would be the place for you. Rich in flavor yet not over sweet, these doughnuts are a treat. But if a budget is to be considered, place Sugar Shack Doughnuts on your "For Special Occasions" list. However, setting budgets aside, if taste, texture and freshness are important then you will find value for the price, whatever the occasion.

Good variety. Many original flavors. Consistent quality of both flavor, texture and freshness. I like that they color their red velvet with beet juice instead of food coloring. It is a nice spot if you won't one or two donuts. There are tons of choices and the quality of the donuts is great. The price is high though. The shop is clean with water available for free. They also have coffee (I'm not old enough to have coffee though). The restrooms are clean. The shop is connected to Luther burger which is a nice spot as well. I went once the burger was good fries were okay. It won't be my choice got lunch or dinner but if somebody asked to go there with them I would.

Wow, where to begin. Sugar Shack, you revived my love for donuts after my mother depressed me with Krispy Kreme my whole life. The rarity of your fried chicken donuts is enough to make me drive 200 miles home. My dad is on a strict diet, but always welcomes a Maple Bacon. If you were a person, I would propose.
