This Coffee Shop belongs to the category of Cafe.
This is a great place to go for good food, but it is insanely noisy, so be prepared for that. If you're lucky to score seating, even better. The food was delicious.
I used to frequent this friendly neighborhood restaurant when I lived locally. Now I'm back in the midwest (my homestate of Indiana) and this is the first place I visit when I come back to the Cambridge area. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is pleasant. I'm glad I came back!
The coffee here is fine but the wifi pretty much just does not work.
Spacious (but well-attended and thus sometimes crowded!) community cafe with good food and a nice variety of non-alcoholic drinks. Queer central! My kind of place. Folks come here for everything from laptop work time to chats with friends to boardgames and billiards. Can be a shade pricey for food, but the quality earns the price. If you're looking for the establishment that anchors the community around Davis Square, this is the closest thing to it.
I like this place for its food and and drinks but it’s always packed (a good thing) and it’s hard find seating. I think they should get rid of the two pool tables in the center of the coffee shop and add more seating. Maybe a sofa, arm chair, side tables, and coffee tables. I also understand the lack of outlets so people don’t stay on their laptops all day.
Best lattes this side of the earth! Delicious homemade food -- they make their own spreads & have really yummy options for vegetarians (or meat eaters). They are also really careful/attentive to special requests and/or food allergies. They are a very green business, too. You'll feel pretty awesome about spending your $$ there and your tummy won't be disappointed either.
Got a small iced coffee with oat milk and the drink was $5!!! Way overpriced. Used to come here and get a small coffee for $3.30, much more reasonable.
Their breakfast sandwiches are good, but mostly overpriced all around. The place also has a weird vibe with both being super hipster and having pool tables.
Great place to get work done with lots of delicious baked goods and coffee options. Great options for lunch too. Veggie club is my go to. Can get a little dark in the back and you can lose track of time. Not sure if this is a good or bag thing. Getting a window seat is tough though.
Diesel is a Davis Square institution. While it can be crowded with people on laptops, the coffee and food are generally on point! My favorite sandwich is the 'Piston' with fresh mozzarella and broccolini.
Great selection of food and coffee
Stopped in to use the bathroom. Didn't have anything to drink or eat, but seemed like a fun place. A little loud to get much done but if you want coffee and a pool table then this is the place.
The barista made me laugh and I got primo parking. I will be returning. The revolution will not be televised but if it goes through Davis Square, stop here for coffee and try to focus your class based violence on their neighbors because Diesel cherishes the hoi polloi, the proletariat and "the great unwashed," like family.
Eclectic atmosphere and way more seating than a shop in Davis Square has any right to have. Good tea and snacks. Pool tables, booths, and more inside.
Great place for chill meetups or working!
Tasty, nice service, great selection.
Love their coffee tea and food! And decor and staff is always great.
Fun hub for socializing with coffee and small bites
The place is much much larger than the outside facade let’s you belief. Pretty cool setup - photos of bands around Boston, billiard tables, many booths, high tables and normal 2ppl tables. The sandwiches are great. The bread is amazing, fresh and tastes good. - coming from someone who grew up on Germany, this should tell you something. All ingredients tasted fresh and well-sourced. Drinks are large. Overall, a bit in the pricey side (sandwiches between $8-13), but worth the money. Internet available for $$.
Hot Thai coffee. Yum! And lime bars. Double yum! I like the vibe in this place. And the person who took our order was super bubbly and sweet.
Great muffins, friendly staff, good service!
Love this place. Coffee is always great and yummy pastries
The perfect hipster coffee house. Great coffee, the best bagels in town, all of the food is really good, vegan options available-- ask and they will sub in cashew cheese. Meals are a little pricey, but for $9.60 you can get a coffee, bagel with hummus, and banana bread.
The Diesel has been my go to coffee and community for over a decade. I love the atmosphere, the space and the staff. Girl Power!
Incredible food and wonderful espresso. As a former barista, I'd say they always follow through with quality in every regard: ambiance, pool tables, lots of seating, delectable goodness, fully opened bay windows in the summer time and good vibes. Love this place! Easy to get to as well.
Excellent coffee. Their new pastries seem good, too, but I haven't tried many yet.
First, let me start by saying I really love coffee and have high expectations for my morning espresso experience. That being said I absolutely love this coffee shop. Everything from the service to the food and drinks are on point. If you care about quality this is the spot. Their espresso drinks are the best in the area.
Good food and great coffee. Got a cortado with oat milk and was accommodated for dairy allergy with drink and food.
I love diesel cafe! Food is yummy! Coffee is great! Service is great! People watching is fun... only issue is getting a seat...it's busy...which is good... but like all coffee shops there are lots of people on laptops/apples just sitting there with empty plates and coffee....so it makes it hard to get a seat... Just get take out :)
Excellent coffee & service. Good place to work.
Very friendly staff. Delicious drink. Calm, chill atmosphere.
The ambience, the people, the rotating list of pour-over coffee: this is why I come to Diesel. It's typically loud, but not in a distracting sort of way. The food is good, breads and pastries baked fresh and locally every morning. Great space for being productive or just hanging out, which is not a common find.
Pros: Great space. Airy, bright, colorful, funky, has great character. Vintage gas pump from an old has station. Vintage photobooth, like at the state fair. It used to work, too, but then it kept breaking and they stopped fixing it. Major bummer. But it's still there and lends retro charm. Two pool tables, in case that's your thing. More atmosphere. Fun booths upholstered in classic red and white vinyl, plus a couple high top round tables, and a bunch of small tables, a long table against a wall for studying/working, and one large wooden table if you like sitting closer to strangers - no judgement either way. Walls feature rotating exhibit of artwork by local artists, a different person every few weeks. Free WiFi. Yep. Lots local color. People of all ages flock here. Very LGBTQ-friendly, as reflected in the staff and some of the clientele. A fair number of wall outlets. Large glass storefront for prime people watching on the street, or watch the people inside (equally good). In the summer/warm weather they open the glass and if you get one of those spots, you're basically al fresco. Games cupboard in the back. Vertical wooden magazine rack with a few old New Yorkers, etc., and a variety of small local rags. Great place to meet a friend for coffee or to study together. Bathrooms: 2 (or is it 3?). Modest menu with a few breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, pastries, and of course, coffee, tea, and espresso drinks. Plenty of veggie- and vegan-friendly options. Cons: Expensive!! Seriously pricey, compared to other areas cafes. None are cheap, buy Diesel really pushes the limit. Major wallet shock. The trade-off for free WiFi? Maybe. But they were pricey even when they charged for WiFi. Now the prices are higher, and there's a three-hour limit on the free WiFi, which, I get. Their hot chocolate is disappointingly bland and thin. The booths are HARD to get during prime time. Sometimes you can't find a seat there period, full stop. The bathrooms - ew!! Gross. For an upscale cafe with high prices, the bathrooms are in a shameful state. They stink. It looks like no one cleans those stainless steel toilets, at least not often. Verdict: If you can spare the cash, handle a gross-ish bathroom, and don't mind fighting for a seat, go for it! Plenty of atmosphere, a great Davis Square vibe, lots of natutal light in the front half of the joint, great people watching on both sides of the large, sunny stotefront, color, life, and a great location. Not too many independent coffee shops left in the area. Diesel is worth checking out. I like it.
I like their coffee and salads, but for the price you pay they better be damn good! It is a pricey place and they make you pay for wifi. The pool tables are a unique touch.
Great food great coffee, but if you're looking to work on your laptop, go somewhere else. Here, they charge you for wifi
Good fresh food (sandwiches and salads) that is geared towards light and healthy. Also a great place to get a cup a coffee and work, particularly is you can snag a booth or play a game of pool on one of those tables. Crowd is spectrum (though like everywhere in new England, mostly variations on white)...from Tufts preppy clones to tech nerds to the LBGTQ crowd and both authentic and wanna-be hipsters. This place has unpretentious character...Boston needs more of these establishments.
I love that they serve their espresso with a shot glass of sparkling water. The sandwiches seem a bit expensive but you're paying for the convenience of the location and getting your food and drink in one spot. Also it is made fresh there. Pastry selection is pretty good. There is locally made ice cream for sale im a freeezer. T-shirts for sale. There are some good paintings on the wall. It seems like they're almost always packed. THEY HAVE WIFI BUT IT IS NOT FREE. There are 2 pool tables. There are 2 bathrooms. There is a photobooth (that is broken as of the last time i was there). There are some books on a shelf that you can read/buy.
I visit Diesel Cafe often for many reasons: the welcoming, quirky, vibrant atmosphere; the excellent coffee and great, healthy food; and the many seating options throughout the cafe, with booths and tables. They also have pastries from Forge Bakery in Somerville as well as bags of coffee beans available for sale. I love the decor, using retro signs and the pool tables inside.
The Hugo Chavez memorabilia is off putting, especially with the tragic situation in Venezuela. I liked the cafe itself but I won't be back.
Everything they offer is good, it's spacious and a fun layout. Excellent coffee
Nice place for Coffee and Food
Great food, great place to hangout or do some work.
I got their hot chocolate which was pretty good. I like that the front opens up so you get all the fresh air on nice days, and that they have a lot of games. It's a little pricey but for a well made beverage it's worth it.
The food, coffee and seating are great, the bathrooms are absolutely horrendous. I've always hated them
Good coffee, food and service.
I had some hot chocolate concoction that seriously tasted less flavorful than Swiss miss. This place is like a cafe with a bar vibe. Has pool tables and stuff. Cool spot. Maybe other drinks are good?
This is a hip place to pick up some coffee. Great service. Pool tables add a nice, unique touch. Outdoor seating available.
Diesel is my favorite cafe in the Somerville area. Their coffee and espresso is consistently good, and service is very good even when it is packed. Everyone who works there is amazingly friendly, and go out of their way whenever there is a problem.
Cool atmosphere. The food and drinks are good, and the prices are pretty standard for the area. Best of all, there’s plenty of seating.
Tasty snacks and drinks. Really kind staff. Only reason I don't give 5 stars is because the Internet is really expensive. It seems strange that a cafe has such a high per hour rate. If you are here just for food and company I would recommend. If you are planning on staying for a few hours to study on a laptop, there are likely better options.
Wonderful spot to meet in Davis Sq. Pool tables are fun. Can be very busy.
Got a macha latte and wasn't in love. Great environment though. Amazing decor and spacious
The coffee was amazing! Loved the atmosphere. Great place to get some work done for a few hours!
It's a nice place. The prices are high for the quality. Bilard is terrible.
Good breakfast! Not the usual American huge portions (just know to expect)
Huge coffee shop. Very busy. Popular with college students. Pastries and sandwiches.
Diesel has a dope vibe. Free WiFi for 3 hours, lots of tasty eats, pretty solid coffee, funky furniture and pool tables. One of my Somerville faves.
So many different coffees to choose from but my go tos are the espresso and the Americano and if you want a sweet to go with your coffee I'd pick the blueberry muffin because it is delicious. Best blueberry muffin I've ever eaten.
Great drinks, treats and atmosphere. Only cafe I know that has pool tables.
Great recommendation to come here. Bustling spot. The burrito was great. Chai so so. Lighting was great and so was the ppl watching. Very fast service.
Good food and coffee. I would have given 5 stars but it is too expensive. 7.15$ for.a small coffee and a bagel with cream cheese.
Great coffee and pastries, with plenty of space to do work, the restrooms are just smelly with tons of graffiti.
Its a pretty large cafe. Loved the vietnamese coffee. Lots of space to sit and work. The area at the back has quite a few power outlets too.
Nice place but they dont carry normal tea black tea just earl gray ick they should carry regular black tea!
Decent wait time, not too long. Seating is limited and recommend sharing large tables with random people. WiFi is free for 3 hours.
This is *the best* coffee shop in Boston. Located in the midst of Davis Square, this oversize, partial-service, Queer-friendly café housed in a renovated industrial space is open late, serving made-to-order omnivorous sandwiches, soups, salads, and sweet/savory baked goods to rooms typically buzzing with students (young and less-young), studying in booths, on laptops, playing darts or pool on one of several tables, or just chatting while people-watching. While the energy here is consistent year-round, the New England weather is not: the absolute best time of year here is the summertime vibe, when the overhead garage doors along the shop front roll up to reveal the pedestrians along the main drag of Davis Square.
Great atmosphere - we had the best iced mochas! Loved playing pool too.
I love this place and always have. Great food and awesome drinks. The staff is certainly awesome as well
Open and inviting atmosphere and with a very friendly staff...if I wasn't just a tourist passing through, I would be a regular!
This place has great instagram lighting in the back by the window
Totally chill vibe and amazing staff + café selection. Go during slower hours if you're looking for a seat, it's a really popular place!
One of our favorite local spots. More seating than it appears from the street, and 3 hours of free wifi!
I like it so much! While the whole neighborhood around it has changed, a LOT, I'm glad that Diesel Cafe keeps it creative but simple: awesome coffee, great sandwiches, and tasty pastries. It's been a staple of the neighborhood for like twenty years or something, and a consistently safe haven for the queer community (I remember a certain bashful baby gay often taking his first boyfriend here).
Very nice, cheerful coffee-shop to hang out and get some work done near Union Square. Has lots of seating space and good coffee. My favorite space to sit is next to the entrance - this seating area has a large glass window (which is usually open on pleasant days) providing a nice view of the bustle outside Union Square if one wants temporary distractions from work.
Great place to get coffee and get work done. Tables can get limited but there's space in the back for common/shared seating.
Always delicious for coffee, espresso, or an egg sandwich. The staff is wonderful and friendly! Go to coffee spot on Davis.
This is my favorite Cafe. A ton of places to sit and work, fantastic environment. The staff are super nice, and the drinks have all been good so far. My favorite is the cold Chai tea latte. Yum!
Usually not one to complain about prices but close to $12 for a breakfast sandwich of small proportions is a little steep. The sandwich itself was very tasty (egg, cheese, bacon, tomato, avocado on brioche). I wish they used a real egg and not liquid egg beaters though. Nonetheless, I would go back to try more food but as far as a breakfast sandwich I can get the same quality for 25% cheaper at other spots in the area
Hang out for young hipsters and college kids. Very creative atmosphere. Noisy and busy, but not hectic. You can get some work done, play pool, or maybe even join oin a card game.
Friendly staff, tasty pastries, hearty sandwiches. Seating availability varies by timing. On nice days the front is open to fresh air. Local artwork often displayed. Prices are a reasonable match for the quality. Overall a great local business.
Great place to play boardgames, play pool, or do some cpu work. They don't allow computer use during busy hours. Please share your booth when it gets b busy! So nice.
Awesome sandwiches and coffee. Hey popular and difficult to find a table.
Great ambiance, excellent baked goods - particularly the croissants, which are some of the best around, and very consistent. Espresso drinks are ok. Hot chocolate is excellent, with real whipped cream. Just don't drink the brewed coffee, which is awful.
Parking is a beast in this area, so perhaps I was a little grumpy by the time I walked in. I got my coffee immediately but my friend who ordered a tea waited for 15 minutes for it. No tea needs to steep that long, which means the staff must have forgotten to get it going before helping other customers. That was not cool. The coffee was delicious though and the staff very kind.
Nice cafe! Pool tables.
The environment is good, very friendly. Lot of space, plenty if sitting areas for individual or group meetings. One thing I didn't like it's the low WiFi signal and the fact that they gave you only 45 minutes to use it, then, not a good choice of place if you want to come and work on your computer.
Great spot to stop in for coffee and breakfast, but also a nice spot to chill, hang with friends (play pool) or get work done.
If I wanted overpriced mediocre food served on a metal lunch tray I'd pay for prison. Needs to diversify staff. Also, asked for a tip for playing pool. Tip for what? Taking the pool balls back? The croissants weren't bad though.
Pretty good Mango Tea-ade. Atmosphere is nice and there's a lot of seating. Billiard tables are a nice plus.
Great coffee, pastries, and bagels (although a little pricey). Lots of seating to hang out or read but it can get full on weekends.
My favorite coffee shop. Tons of space, good coffee, lots of tasty pastries. WiFi is paid, but if you're coming regularly it's cheap, and it keeps the speed fast.
Great mocha and bagels!!
The employees are always friendly and ready to help. Great food, and great drinks. I'm here at least once a week.
Great staff and service
Had a lot of space but not enough chairs to seat
I love this cafe and should visit more often. I like the drinks that they make and their selection of pastries. There is plenty of seating of a wide variety of styles. I love that they have pool tables, although they are not in the best shape, they are the cheapest by the hour tables in the greater Boston area.
I like there coffee more than Starbucks.
One of the best mochas I've had. Chocolatey without being too bitter or too sweet.
Great ambiance and you can definitely get work done here - plenty of sockets and there’s free WiFi! My boyfriend said the coffee was just ok though.
Decent variety with the menu but you can't avoid the sheer overpriced nature of Diesel. They clearly are doing something right because the place is usually slammed. I'm assuming it's mainly the location and atmosphere that attracts the clientele.
Great trendy cafe with and open mind and open heart to all humans. Lovely place to be
Great place to get lunch or coffee. Always lots of laptop people.
One of my favorite spots in town
This is a fun place to go for a coffee or snack, but it is crowded around the clock. The baristas do a perfect job with the espresso drinks, with the latte art making the high prices justified. They also have pool tables, though you do have to pay to use them.
Great place. Nice ambience, good service
Been going here for years.. Great independent coffee place with a fantastic local feel. My favorite thing is seeing regulars there every weekend and have the same people working there for years. Love the Vietnamese coffee and their pour overs. Their bagels, croissants and muffins are also great. One of those places that lets you still believe that not everything in the world is uber sanitized, gentrified and commercialized and there are still some friendly neighborhood genuine places left.
I have been on several first dates at Diesel (and not because I suggested it first). That alone should tell you a little bit about this place -- it's cooler and more interesting than your stereotypical Starbucks, it's convenient to a lot of locations, it's a good place to sit for an hour or two, and it's a low-key, inexpensive place to eat and talk. I highly suggest it for a low-key date.
Great coffeehouse in Somerville's Davis Square!
Can't judge the quality of the coffee because I never got it. Waited 18 minutes for a Vietnamese and finally decided no cup of coffee is worth that kind of a wait. Requested a refund and went on my way. Place looked nice and the wait staff were courteous.
Chelsea is great at her job, and treats customers with warmth and respect.
This place seems to get better and better. When I lived in Somerville, I spent numerous hours, multiple days a week, working on my laptop any place I could find a seat. Now that I don't go as often now that I live elsewhere, stepping into Diesel provides a sense of nostalgia while surprising me with the thoughtful updates it's implemented to make the place even more accommodating. I'm a big fan of the Monkey Wrench and vegan chocolate muffins. And their breakfast bowl is delicious!
Spacious study space, some areas are quite dim so you’d have to come earlier to get a better study spot. Not giving an extra star because the last time, the internet wasn’t working. I tried for 30 min, asked the barista and she said to restart my computer or use a different browser. It still didn’t work. I ended up leaving with my friend to Starbucks across the street (their internet is obviously working). Also the WiFi here is limited to 3 hrs! As a student, you can definitely study longer than that.
Where I met the love of my life, good iced coffee and lots of room for talking ❤️
Internet is pay to use, which is archaic. Otherwise, it's a nice, queer friendly coffee shop with good pastries and sandwiches
Great location, fun atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff.
Had a cappuccino. Quite good.
Excellent coffee, great ambience.
Likes: Food is a whole lot better than Starbucks. So is the coffee. Local. Great vibe. Convenient. Dislikes: Finding a seat can be hard and the Wi-Fi isn't free.
Great coffee and nibbles. Nice warm atmosphere
Great cafe, I really enjoy getting work done there. Excellent coffee/espresso and tea selection. Sort of an odd layout though and it's usually so busy during the day that you can't find seating.
Good pastries, sandwiches and coffee. Finding a place to sit can be difficult because many people use this as a base to work or study but there's a great big communal table at the back you can usually squeeze into. I'd give it 5 stars but breakfast for two generally runs us about $25 for 2 drinks and breakfast sandwiches which is a little steep for counter service.
Best bagels in Somerville! Closest to a NY style bagel as I've been able to find in the Boston area.
Coffee & drinks good. Two pool tables (why.) Mocha was good with big cookie. Noisy & packed.
Real good coffee, good food and friendly staff. Nice place to work for a couple hours. Free WiFi.
Good healthy food, nice place to sit and work, great rate for pool tables, nice coffee. And nice people-that helps everything.
this is the iconic, lesbian run coffee house in Davis and I love it
Ham and cheese croissant comes with everything seasoning on top. Mmmmm
Loved their latte!
Love this place! I've been going since 2006 and it's inclusive, has fantastic drinks, and the food is very tasty. Often very busy though.
The food and drinks are good, and the prices are pretty standard for the area.
Awesome ambiance, good coffee. Sometimes hard to get a seat
Good cafe that has lots of seating for students that need a place to work or people that need a place to meet. Their WiFi password is in a picture hung across from the cash registers.
This isn't just a cafe it's a local institution where you can meet people who live or work in the area. Good food, good service, eclectic atmosphere and tons of irregular regulars. Zany and fun, very satisfying coffee and food.
Awesome sandwiches. My personal recommendation is JB’s Club. The vibe inside is great too.
A unique local place, better than Starbucks. Good food and drinks, cool art and atmosphere.
Food is overpriced; place is super noisy; hard to carry on a conversation; long waits before you receive your order. Location is great!
Came here nearly every day for years. Awesome coffee and food! I love the atmosphere and the entire front opens up in the summer :-)
So much to love here: cafe latte, green tea latte, breakfast burrito, pastries, all sandwiches, breakfast sandwich.. It's all very good food and drink. There are two pool tables and a lot of seating that fills up very fast, it's often hard to find a seat. Good place for a coffee date or business meeting.
Super popular local coffee shop. Pretty good drinks, lots of options, but usually crowded and frequently impossible to find a seat. Not uncommon for me to get a beverage here and go sit in Starbucks across the street, but Nine Bar up the road has better drinks.
Friendly staff, artsy café, and tasty snacks. Perfect café for a quick catch up.
A VERY popular spot! Great food and drinks. Be prepared to wait if you want a table.
A Somerville gem. It's a rather large space but don't count on having an available seat because this place gets packed. They have good treats, bagels, and sandwiches.
The coffee is above average; the bagels/pastries are great; always a little slow.
Diesel feels less like a coffee shop than a bar that doesn't revolve around alcohol. It's a treat that the coffee and specialty drinks also quality, and it's the rare Cambridge/Somerville spot that offers Intelligentsia coffee and Kilogram tea. Skip the Starbucks down the street if you plan to linger over your latte.
Vietnamese coffee!
I stopped in at Diesel Cafe to meet up with friends, and was greeted by great employees and good atmosphere. The cafe has plenty of seating and a couple of pool tables. What is great is the drinks and food. All of the items on the menu looked great as they were being served to customers. My Tuck's Turtle was made perfectly as well. Highly suggested!
Great coffee shop in David
Great coffee and amazing baked goods. It can be crowded on weekends but if you come early it's a great place to hang out for a while.
They are very nice and friendly. The food is very good. They need to update there menu on line.
Good coffee and grub, staff isn't that friendly but you know, it is Boston after all
Very dissapointed
Have been Coming for years. Best Coffee and Sticky Buns Around. I do miss the Pecan Sticky Buns though. Absolutely Delicious
They have the best coffee in the Boston area, and I've shopped around. They're often busy, but the staff has good hustle. The baked goods are fantastic and their sandwiches are top notch. If you're in Davis, definitely stop in.
Very aesthetically pleasing!
If you need some get up and go to get you motivated, this is the place
It’s marcia Cece, by the way
I went to Diesel the first week I moved to Boston over 4 years ago. I still haven't found a better cup of coffee.
