Phenomenal cafe- absolutely lovely. Great food, made fresh daily. Coffee is great. The space is nice, and the mission is a really important one.
Where do I start, this place is absolutely Awesome! You've got to try the fried rice bowl. Just add a touch of their house hot sauce its next level. Their baked goods are SO GOOD!!!. My recommendation is the muffin with rosemary, poppy seeds with an Orange glaze on top. 5 stars all day..
Jalapenos and cheese on waffles! Yum!
Delicious food. Nice staff. Local business. Supporting a great cause.
Food is great services is very warming
Great place to get coffee!
It's a small cafe with great simple breakfast foods. I have never been for lunch. The croissants are awesomely delicious. The service is always great and they have good coffee.
I really ejoy the food and the service
Interesting place. The owners started the business to provide a place for their autistic son, and other people on the autism spectrum, to find meaningful employment. Oddly, Google Maps gives the address of this café as 3811 Canterbury Rd. in Baltimore. Actually, the entrance is around the corner on 39th St. There's not a parking lot, but metered street parking may be available. You order at the counter, and they give you a number to take to your table. In theory, that makes it more likely that your order will be correctly entered. My wife ordered a bacon and egg sandwich that, she said, was delicious. I ordered a tuna salad sandwich on whole wheat bread. The sandwich arrived on rye bread. Since I dislike the taste of caraway seeds, I asked the server to take it back and bring me the tuna salad on whole wheat bread that I had ordered. They did, and they even toasted the whole wheat bread for me, an added treat. It was very good. My sandwich came with salt and vinegar potato chips. Also good. Prices were reasonable, and the staff was friendly. I recommend this place.
Excellent little coffee shop and lunch counter. Have been there a few times since I originally went there last year. Niel
A little hard to find-- the entry is really around the corner on 39th. The food's good and they have art by locals. Right now they have pieces by Iandry, the guy who did the bird murals on York Road, Govans. I want to try their Saturday brunch...looks great.
Difficult identifying the place...no/difficult parking
Lovely little place to grab a coffee and breakfast or light lunch. Great neighborhood amenity.
Wonderful place. Great jalapeno cheddar waffle and coffee. A must visit.
Great coffee, delicious food, friendly service.
Very good coffee. Nice baked goods. And the best breakfast burrito in Baltimore
They haven't quite figured this thing out yet.
Terrible service. I ordered an avocado toast with egg, and it came without egg. I asked them to add it and the girl argued with me about whether or not I had said “with egg” in my order. When she took it back to add it, she commented loudly to the other employee that I hadn’t said “with egg.” How petty and rude.
Order at the counter. Breakfast spot thats great
Love the Thankful Turkey sandwich.
Lovely café, excellent service, particularly from Carver Bain. A+ for the service and for the food.
Cheap but quite good Mexican food. Try the shrimp tacos, and if you can, the goat tacos. Horchada for the drink is a must for all locals here.
a great place to eat while supporting a worthy cause
Very good sandwiches and drinks, lovely ambience.
so!!! good!!!
This is a wonderful little breakfast place with the bonus of an altruistic mission that makes you feel great about going there. First, the food - it's just a shame there aren't more restaurants like this, serving real, solidly-executed food like omelets, pancakes, sandwiches, salads etc, quickly and at a reasonable price, that allow you to sit down and relax for a bit, but aren't sterile-feeling chains. This is a Panera-like experience but at a small, charming, independent place. You order at the counter and your meal is brought to your table without a big fuss - as opposed to a long sit-down brunch with wait staff (of which there are good nearby options) costing 2x-3x the price. You can run into here, get a great meal and a cup of coffee, and be done in 20 minutes if you'd like. The outdoor seating is great when the weather is reasonable; Sam's is nestled into a charming, old-school residential apartment building in a cozy neighborhood near JHU, so there is a pleasant but still urban feeling about the patio. The inside is comfy and original - usually decorated with local artwork, with a cute "mezzanine" seating area that kids love, although it gets a little bit hot from time to time. Omelets are great and there's real care put into the food. There are brunch specials on weekends. The food is not at a super gourmet standard, but it is whimsical and creative enough without being crazy, and consistently solidly prepared. Staff is always friendly, which gets to the mission - Sam's openly supports employment, job training, and skills development for people with autism. Not only does it make you feel good about patronizing the place, but announcing it openly creates a certain atmosphere in the place... not that I've ever had poor service there, but everyone sort of has to recalibrate when walking in - "OK, I'm busy and in a rush, but I need to de-fuse my impatience and be pleasant." Perhaps I'm projecting, but there is just a different, more positive vibe in there that is palpable to me. It's the perfect weekend breakfast spot for a little oasis while on your errands and getting about your day - refreshing and filling without stealing an hour of your day and too much of your wallet.
Food is good but today Lisa was very rude. I wanted to let it slide and not act like an angry customer causing commotion but I spend my money here and I don't appreciate the way she was talking to me. It started with me calling ask about French Toast and she was just very short and seemed to cut me off. It was something along the lines of "Hey, do you guys have french toast? I see it on your photos on your website" she says, " We don't have french toast, you need to read the menu"... Okay ma'am well I read it so clearly i'm thinking you may have left it off the menu because there are a few things I don't see on the menu such as the latte.... and that actually brings me to my second point. I ordered the latte and she ASKED me if I wanted a large and i stated yes. When i arrived to pick up my food i was rang up for a "regular" ... She said " no that's a regular, that's what you asked for but i'll just remake it." I said i would pay the difference. There was another employee there that was going to help me with paying the difference but Lisa told her don't worry about it and she would do it herself. After she makes the large, she was over to me and says, "I'll let it slide this time"... EXCUSE ME?! YOU ARE THE ONE WHO ASKED IF I WANTED A LARGE AND I SAID YES! I DIDN'T ASK FOR A REGULAR BECAUSE I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW YOU HAD A REGULAR BECAUSE THE DAY BEFORE I PURCHASED A LARGE AND THAT WAS MY FIRST TIME EVER ORDERING A LATTE FROM THERE! I didn't even know you had them and I asked the wonderful guy over the phone and he said yes you do so I ordered a large. How about next time, I don't let you slide for talking to me that way. I'm just confused about how I paid $5.25 for a regular which is pretty small and the large was abut $6. Whatever. But hopefully you have a better day going forward and change your tone of voice towards the employees and other customers.
I love Sam’s. It’s my favorite place to eat in Baltimore. The food is excellent and the staff are friendly and welcoming. It’s a great place for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. It’s a convenient location for all with a good setting for any occasion. It’s also a great place to bring friends and family.
Had my first visit today. Enjoyed it very much. Nice atmosphere. They accommodated my vegan diet by coming up with a tasty toast, avocado dish (very good bread). Had a wonderful vegan apple crumble cake for dessert. Wonderful Zeke's coffee. I'll be back.
Great for a light weekend breakfast. Outside seating is dog friendly!
Okay place for brunch on the weekends. Reasonably priced. Good cause - they support jobs for peopel with autism
Great sandwiches, great staff and great prices!!!
I was delighted to find out that I could get a gluten free bagel here!
Great food and wonderful staff!
Closes early and doesn't open Mondays. Good sandwiches, rather expensive espresso drinks compared to the coffee shop around the corner.
Vegetable wrap was just what I wanted!
Great lattes and iced lattes.
Beautiful coffee and nice brunch
We really need more places like this in the neighborhood. Maybe we'd be a proper college town if we had a few more of these.
Small, quaint, creative
Cute little place that replaced chocolotea. I went for brunch with a couple of friends, but thought they only had a limited menu. I found out later there is an extended menu--and we only saw the "specials" menu. The food was pretty good! Definitely recommend to anyone in the Hopkins area.
This place is probably Baltimore's best kept secret lunch spot, and I suspect it won't be a secret for very long. Great sandwiches and salads, check. Amazing in house baked goods and coffee, check. Awesome patio and dining area that isn't completely packed with hipsters and Hopkins students (yet), check! Plus this place has a mission statement so clean, your karma level increases 10X every time you eat there! Seriously, go because you're hungry, and you gotta eat somewhere, and it might as well be somewhere local that supports an under supported community. Go back again and again because the food and staff are amazing!
Try it
I really wanted to like this place. The people are AWESOME!! But after 4-trys, I am officially DONE!! My first experience was a Greek salad that was missing practically 30% of the typical Greek salad ingredients. When I called to complain, the young lady was ABSOLUTELY the nicest about it and even promised me another one on the house. She said she'd leave a note for someone so that when I picked it up, we'd all be on the same page. Well, I wasn't able to get back there until the following week but when I did, the salad was made the EXACT SAME WAY as the one I complained about. I said forget it, I'm not even going to mention it this time. I waited awhile before returning. Until one day, I was talking with one of my patients, and he mentioned that their Caesar salad was descent. He said his only complaints regarding the salad was that one, it's a bit pricey, and two, at times, you have to pick through to remove the wilted ones. Soooo, I was hungry, it was lunch time, I work across the street, and I'm thinking, hey, let's try the Caesar salad. Well, pricey is 100% correct for that standard of a Cesar salad. The amount of wilt was overwhelming and it did not taste very good. I hated that the dressing came on the salad. But hey, that was my fault, I should have asked. The salad was not fresh at all. My experience with Cesar salad is the crunch. This salad was mushy. I was utterly disappointed, AGAIN. I MISS CHOCOLATE TEA!!!!!!!!!!! I think I will stick with the drinks and muffins. No more food from there. Sorry guys.
I love this place! I come here roughly twice per month. The coffee and pastries are good, and I am partial to their tuna salad. A really lovely spot.
I ordered a veggie wrap and surprisingly it taste very good!
This is a lovely place with lovely people working there!!!
Delicious waffles made by nice people!
Nice place, portions could be a bit larger but nice quiet place to work and eat. Sometimes it gets a bit smoky inside bit all in all I like it.
Lisa did an amazing job on this place! Seen it before and after, and Lisa naiped it out of the park!
This place is amazing. I met a few of the workers so far. Annie and dion are some of the coolest people I have ever met and it's fantastic that they have such a welcoming environment to work . The vegan apple crumb cake it's fantastic and im not even vegan. Strongly recommend visiting this amazing place and helping the cause.
What a wonderful find. We all had different selections today, tuna salad sandwich, flat bread, grown up grilled cheese sandwich, chicken club and waffles. There wasn't a crumb left on our plates, everything was so good. Good size portions too. Coffee and lattes we're really good. Good atmosphere and not very busy. Order at counter and food is delivered to the table. Pastries looked good but we all were too full. Great place for families as well as couples.
