Quick friendly service; tasty food
Vegan offerings plus live music. What more could I ask for?
I havent eaten in ... but go to go food and it tasted great!!! Vegan meatballs and fries... will try again with husband and kids
Plenty of character. Worth a visit before the movie!
The new Chef makes excellent food! The menu is all new
I am so elated to have found this vegan gem! The vegan crab cake burger is delicious and perfect for lunch on the go! If you live locally, or are just in the area try it, you are bound to enjoy.
Pretty cool spot with lots of events. It's tucked into an apartment complex in a part of Greenbelt I didn't know existed. What a great discovery. I have the monthly Saturday afternoon poetry open mic to thank for that.
Food is very good
Delicious food and desserts. I love this place! Very nice food presentation too. Happy that's it's completely vegan!
Warm, friendly local community atmosphere combined with excellent Lebanese food and extremely nice, gracious and accommodating management and staff. It's The REAL DEAL!!! Check it out. Food is delicious and authentic. Music events are superb and varied. We are so glad to have the New Deal Cafe under the current management - a welcome paradigm change from the previous. We eat there frequently and attend as many musical events as possible.
Pretty good vegan American burger. First time trying
This place is so entertaining!!
Great atmosphere, good food
Best new vegan spot in area
Always a fun night at New Deal! Great people and great music!
Vegan lefty coolness.
Its a good place to hear music love it
Funky and delish hippie vegan cafe with great live music and an interesting cast of characters. Must try the "calamari."
The beet burger is excellent
Outstanding people, great food. Amazing vegan and vegetable-arian food. By which I mean, actually edible and even delicious. Brilliant staff. Comfy spot, with frequent out standing music.
The best vegan food you'll find in this part of MD by a mile. Everything is fresh and well made, they have a baked good case and an espresso machine in addition to their heartier menu items.
Great place for live music and vegan food, and I mean all the food is vegan.
Excellent food, great service, friendly staff, and nice atmosphere. The waffles were delicious--the banana bread was subtle and delicious! The portion was perfect! I ate every bite without feeling stuffed or hungry for more.
How has this little gem been hiding from me this whole time. Service and food were outstanding
Live music, no cover, great food and beer. I just enjoyed some calamari
Great atmosphere, vegan food, and music
Love playing The New Deal. Friendly people and great vegan food.
The food was not great at all. I was very disappointed. You can tell the food came from the freezer to the microwave. It was not fresh. The fries were tough hard to chew and had no taste. It took a really long time to make the food even though it was not to par compared to the quality. The food was very expensive for what we got. Price did not match the quality of the food. Though there was a nice environment and friendly people.
The vegan food was top notch. Live entertainment keep us dancing through the night.
Wonderful atmosphere and a great new vegetarian menu. I'm a meat and potatoes guy, but I loved the veggie burger and fries. Very tasty and gracious portions.
If you are a vegan or vegetarian this is a good place, in a very cozy neighborhood, their sweet potato fries are absolutely the best. I am a meat eater and I thought their burger tasted so good but I believe it was soy or veg, but it was very delicious. Free flavored water.
Customer service and food was great! Nice, small cafe, with artwork for sale inside as well. They also have baked goods.
Felt like home! Great food and excellent music. Tinsmith is amazing. As for the food, I had the beet burger on risotto. Yum!
Great Greenbelt atmosphere that is casual, comfortable and friendly. The live music is a big plus. I like the new menu, but I hope it expands.
Love love love this place!! Food is amazing
Great good.
I am a staunch believer that human kind did not climb the evolutionary food chain over a vast period to not eat animals. That being said this is the *only* vegan place that I actually find their food really good. Keep up the good worj
Greenbelt is the center of good things.
Having a great time on Saturday night with Fractle cat got to look for the m to come back.
I love this place! The vegan food is delicious, the staff is so warm and friendly and there is great live music 6 nights a week. A real Gem!
This is a very small Cafe. The food is totally vegetarian and mostly good. A favorite of the locals and other vegan minded people. The result produces a funky, mostly older crowd. They have a full bar and some decent beer. The name, "New Deal" and much of the neighborhood, comes from the FDR era origin. The main attraction for me comes from the incredibly diverse musical entertainment the owners find and bring in.
Too long and inconvenient a drive from where I live to rate a "loved it"
The cafe has a new menu as of summer 2018. I haven't tried any main courses but the fries were good.
Really great place! As a long time vegan it's really hard to find a great vegan spot so I usually just cook at home, but we wanted to take our mom out for her birthday. We ordered the bbq cauliflower wings (star of the show!), vegano salad, meaty ball, carciofo, and herbed tofu. Presentation was awesome and everything was delicious, but the red wine vinaigrette was way too salty. It was the early afternoon so we were sitting in the front of the restaurant (the bar area is at the back). Gave 4 stars instead of 5 bc they should play better music during the day (what they had on would put you to sleep), renovate the place, and cut back the salt in the vinaigrette. I look forward to going back and sampling more of the menu! Hi
Our group each ordered a different food item Saturday night. All of it was awful. Come and listen to music if you must, and even buy a beer, but do NOT eat here.
Vegan food tasty. Coffee AMAZING. Better work space than Starbucks
The New Deal Cafe seems to be quite popular, so maybe it's just me. We went for a quick meal before seeing a film at the Old Greenbelt Cinema. First, a group of four arrived just ahead of us, and the young woman behind the counter gave them all of the menus she had. There was no board describing everything so we waited for a menu. After ordering we sat at a table near the door because we were expecting a friend to meet us. Our food arrived quickly enough. But my tacos with cod had very little taste and the tortillas were tough. My husband was pleased with his salad and a serving of peach crumble. The room is brightly lit and lacks both charm and comfort. Next time I eat in Greenbelt I'd prefer to go elsewhere. But if I have to eat at the New Deal again, I'll order something different.
Nice spot in a historic bit of Maryland. Local music, art, next to the co-op grocery store and a movie theater. Nice selection of beer and wine.
Fun open mic night
I live in Greenbelt and I also eat plant based. I decided to go to New Deal Cafe based on the Google reviews. Very nice atmosphere and the young lady on the register was extremely attentive, knowledgeable and accommodating. Now let’s get to the food. I ordered the Meaty Ball Sub with housemade meaty balls, almond ricotta, sunflower parmesan, house marinara on a baguette with a side order of sweet potato fries. The sub was $11.00 and the fries were $2.00. My total was $13.78. After I paid, went to the restroom, was in there maybe 7 mins, came back to the table and my food was there. A red flag immediately went up. That told me the food was pre-made. The sub roll and the meatballs were cold. The fries were lukewarm and not crispy. I informed, who I assume is the owner or manager, that my food was cold. He asked was it the bread or the meatballs? I thought to myself “Nothing should be cold.” I replied that they both were cold. His response was “I can see if they can heat the meatballs but the bread is not suppose to be heated.” WTH?!? Who serves a meatball sub with cold bread? He took my plate, went in the kitchen, came back and the meatballs were a tad bit warmer but definitely not hot. At that point, I was done. I ate half of the sandwich and maybe 1/4 of the fries. I can understand the meatballs being pre-made because that’s not a dish you cook-to-order, however you would think they would keep it hot in a crockpot or if it’s kept in the fridge, heat it before serving to their customers. Now fries should be cooked-to-order. The bulk of the fries were not crispy and as I stated were lukewarm. They couldn’t have cooked them from the time I ordered and returned from the restroom and I have never ordered a sub and the bread was not heated or toasted. As for the taste. On a scale from 1 - 5, I give it a 2. The meatballs were mushy and the sauce was bland. Also the sandwich was cut in half, with 2 small meatballs on each half and maybe 2 tbsps of marinara sauce. For $11.00, the fries should have been included. I was very disappointed. Suggestion...brown the meatballs in the oven first. That will make them firm and not get mushy while sitting in the sauce.
Vegan co-op Cafe and bar. With music in the back sometimes.
Homey, local restaurant with great vegan options!
This cafe is weird. It's basically a whole bunch of outdated hippies dancing to 60's hippie music. The food is fine, but one of the employees didn't know how to use the register! I just was.... Astonished. Anyway, those places is for older people and not hip or how at all.
The all vegan menu is very good. I do wish more items beyond the salads were NOT fried. I would also like to see a rotating seasonal menu featuring seasonal veggies (not fried).
Limited space. Limited menu. Guess it qualifies as quaint
My favourite restaurant in Maryland so far, owned by the Greenbelt coop and managed by "Pianta" a vegan eatery from DC. The atmosphere is great with a mix of 1930's USA art-deco and many evenings you'll find 1970's folk bands playing gigs. Good selection of bottled beers and interesting non-alcoholic beverage.
Great food , fun atmosphere with frequent music and other happenings. Convenient location, easy parking.
Interesting events and specials every week
Amazing! The Italian "sausage" was soo tasty. With the bits of cauliflower and carrots inside and the sauce on top i couldn't be more satisfied for today's lunch stop. I will definitely be back! The side salad was a nice touch too
Visitors to the New Deal can expect to find great service, local art and poetry, delicious and reasonably priced fare, talented musical guests, comfortable seating, Vigilante coffee, and seasonal events being tested and developed by a receptive, hands on management team. Greenbelt is a lot yummier now that they're around!
If you love great music, vegan food in a casual artsy environment, then you should try this place. I am not a vegan, but gotta tell you the food was delicious. I was expecting it to be more like a concert set up so I wore a dress. I could have worn a fun & funky dress with a jean jacket. I think its opened my mind to new possibilities of eating. Not that I have a short list of food I like lol. Id like to go back & bring my close gal friends. Btw I had a delicious cannoli that was made with WHO KNOWS!
Very good food but very small portions.
I am not Vegan so this review is strickly based on that. The food is not tricking anyone. It is not good. If you are going and are not vegan, eat before you go!
The new deal cafe is so different from other places cause of the vegan menu i didn't know plant base food could be so good I'm not use to it as yet but i could definitely feel the difference and the taste is not much different from the realthing and it healthier for your body I've been told so folks make sure u go out and try it right here in old green its the only one I've seen in this area i gave it 4 star because i didn't know plant could made to taste so much like real food i definitely go back there to try some more stuff .
Great food offered by smiling faces. It's definitely my happy place!
Absolutely fantastic. Can't recommend highly enough.
Great little restaurant with a real neighborhood feel. Service can be a little hit or miss but the food is delicious and comes quickly once you get your order in. Fantastic venue to see/hear music with ample parking. Very reasonable prices. Almost directly off the BW parkway.
Love this place. Live music almost every night!
I recently moved to Greenbelt and I love going to New Deal for a nice meal in a laid-back atmosphere. Don’t let the new vegan menu scare you. My husband I are not vegan, but we loved the beet burger and bbq jackfruit!
There's a new chef in town! Great food, much improvement! So far everything we've had has been really good. It's all 100% vegan now, but tastes amazing! Service is also top notch!
Authentic vegan. Everything I had hoped for when the announcement was posted that the Moon ‘s were taking over the management of this cafe. They have exorcised most of what was bad about the old cafe. Quick service, adventuresome menu. I can’t say enough about how good and tasty the food is under the Moon management. You must try it! Fabulous!
Love the art show created by three friends including IHSLA art teacher, Sara Sanchez. Thanks for the great food and art gallery!
Absolutely a fun place. Happy people welcoming and lovable!!! Vegan as well. The risotto balls are flavorful and very rich in flavor and texture! Tasty food great fun and live bands.
I've enjoyed everything I've tried, but my favorites are the beet burger in a rice bowl and the cauliflower wings! But it's all delicious, beautiful, carefully prepared, and healthy too! Don't be afraid of trying their 100% plant-based menu items- you'll be amazed at the flavors! AND their food really is a work of art and prepared with love. One of my favorite restaurants and they have live music too! Perfect.
This one of my favorites nice little old town cafe
Recommend visiting this cafe if in the area. Good dessert options and I believe they have live music at specific times too.
Love it!
Friendly and delicious
One of the most wonderful local pubs I've ever been to! Great vegan food, music, atmosphere.
Taste of the food is excellent. Must try the vegan calamari it's unbelievably convincing!
Okay experience. A little pricey.
Very quaint and small but good beer selection
Good vegan menu. Loved the "Meaty" Balls.
I shared my order... everyone was impressed with the food. They said "That was a REALLY good salad. We have to go there again!"
Great food great service
Head on down and feel welcomed at the New Deal. The closest thing — in vibe, tho not at all in physical trappings — to an English pub. Because you go there to hang out and meet your pals, or to meet new pals. If you don’t want to think of yourself as eating “vegan”food (there’s no meat or dairy there), just go get beers and fries while checking out a band or poetry night, or the Reel and Meal movies shown for free (and discussed) on the 3rd Monday of each month. There’s no place else like the New Deal.
Great vegan eats and live music!
THE FOOD IS JUST VEGGIES TURNED INTO "MEAT" i give it a .1 out of 1million
I liked their "crock" sandwiches - french toast with sandwich stuff in between - but I hear they are switching to an all-vegan menu. Their live music is fun.
Fun place.
Fresh, healthy food with some indulgent options as well. The food was really good and all staff were very polite and enthusiastic. Fairly priced. Large parkling lot on site with free parking. Ample seating area and clean bathrooms.
This place is great for a nice beer or glass of wine with the wonderful company of great people and live music! The bartenders are amazing! The food can use a face-lift,though.
The food is great and quite varied. I'm a carnivore and they have very good options on the menu. The place is also wonderfully kid friendly. As a parent, I really appreciate that. With the warmer weather, they are now doing a really nice Lebanese mountain bread - cooked over a flame - on Sunday mornings. Also, the outdoor seating option is wonderful! The live music can be hit or miss, but isn't canned or prepackaged - so I appreciate it for being as authentic as it comes. Thurs, Fri & Sat shows tend to be the best acts. The venue is small, but cozy and the layout of the place really makes for a unique experience. We'll definitely be going back often!
Fun place! Great food and drinks! Fun entertainment.
Loved the tempeh meatball sub and kale ceasar! The buffalo cauliflower bites were also amazing! Can't wait to come back!
Where do I start? Their queso and tomato soup comes from the same, cold vat (they are indistinguishable). Felafel was dry. Lasagna straight from your local grocer’s frozen aisle - still frozen.
The food is good and the atmosphere was awesome, just happened to have a band playing
Yummy vegan food. Great music
This place is always full of positive vibes and the cafe has Deeelishussss(delicious) vegan food! My daughter loves coming through and dancing to the bands that play.
Delicious vegan food, friendly service, and great music. Relaxed atmosphere. Had a local, neighborhood vibe.
Great creative vegan/vegetarian options! As someone who is not vegetarian, the choices here tasted great and filled me up.
All reviews prior to July 2018 are moot as the operation of the kitchen is in totally different hands now. All previous reviewers should go back to the Cafe to check it out. I think you will be pleased. I highly recommend the New Deal Café. The new (as of July 1, 2018) all plant-based full menu is “NOT your father’s Vegan” restaurant. It is delicious “comfort” Italian-style food that just happens not to have any meat, dairy, or fish ingredients. Add to that award-winning (The 35 Best Folk Music Venues in the U.S., WTOP's "Best Local Music Venue") live music 6 nights a week (closed on Mondays), free parking, free Wi-Fi, scrumptious coffee, and a local artist gallery. The New Deal Café is a community Cooperative that invites all to enjoy its many fine attributes. (You do not have to be a member of the Cooperative to join in the music, art, and culinary delights, but after visiting the Cafe, you might just want to be a part of this great estabishment. I am.)
Great venue for local and touring acts, friendly staff, weird and interesting menu. One slight annoyance: I asked if their menu was vegan, and they replied, "It's plant-based." Except, it's not plant-based, because they serve mushrooms. But, yes, the menu is vegan. The sweet-potato fries were fantastic.
This isn't a review. I don't see another way to advise that the listing needs to be updated. I love New Deal Cafe and also love going there for the music, but the Lebanese Menu has not existed since last year. Get with it, please.
This is my favorite neighborhood spot. Excellent music, rotating beer/wine selection and lots of friendly people. We all share the tables here.
Good food, although it is slightly more expensive than other middle-eastern food places around. The pita bread for shawarma sandwiches is better than the competition though. The hummus is also better than average. Can you find better places? Yes, but this is one of the better options for the area and great for your middle-east fix.
Yummy food! I'm so glad they have Wild Kombucha
Love the GF options and friendly staff
Last night's experience was lovely. My meal was perfect. I got the chicken tenders with coleslaw. The tenders were juicy and crispy. The coleslaw was divine. The music was great
I went there to see a movie about plant based diets. It turned out to be a very good venue for a movie. The back room with the projector and screen can accommodate about 65 people. Folks can eat while they watch the movie. I had a caprese rice bowl and liked it a lot.
Always loved New Deal. Always. The change in the kitchen, just makes that much better. Everything the gf and I have tasted has been amazing. Something on the menu for everyone. Oh yeah, they have live music and great beer. An all around treasure for Old Greenbelt.
The cafe now has coffee service in the am and will be adding fresh loose tea soon! The menu has dramatically changed to a modern bistro-style offering to please burger-lovers and vegans. I hope the winter medley salad stays year round - kale, cheese, and freshly grilled shrimp.
Great vegan fare! Friendly staff and awesome atmosphere. Don't forget to come for the live music!!!
All vegan food that just about anyone can enjoy. The bbq jackfruit and cauliflower wings are especially good. The beer selection is always top notch as well; six rotating micro brews are on tap. They are a bit expensive for Old Greenbelt, but the quality makes it worthwhile.
Food was delicious!!! Healthy vegan options, great vibe. They had live music when I visited which was a little loud since we had an infant with us but we were easily able to find a quieter place in the front of the restaurant. Great food and great service!
Great neighborhood cafe! Superb quality food, locally roasted coffee, and passionate and friendly service. Can’t ask for much more!
Holy smokes — this place is AWESOME!!!! No sense whatsoever. Extremely friendly staff. Great food. Very decent pricing. Great place to work. And, here’s the best part, the music is not noise or sound. Very well designed acoustics. It’s not loud at all — you can take a phone call or talk to someone without going deaf.
Great spot for local jazz and other.
I loved the creative, vegan menu. The food is fresh, delicious and a different twist on healthy bowls. The service is great too. They also have coffee and live music. When you eat here, you're also helping to save animals. I recommend it and can't wait to further go back.
This place rocks! Great food and atmosphere. Bartenders are awesome.
Great Vegan selections. It was very busy and we got forgotten on telephone when ordering a takeout. Staff was apologetic.
Great vegan restaurant. Desserts are amazing! Live music in the evenings.
Outstanding vegan food and friendly staff
New Deal Cafe is now 100% VEGAN!!!! & ever since the food has been phenomenal. Everything I have tried so far is delicious, even better than Great Sage’s version of the same style dishes! (which is very tough competition!!!) I have already been twice and it just opened under new management yesterday! I have lived in Greenbelt for 3 years now and have always been sadly disappointed in the food at New Deal and have been hoping to see it change for the better! Yay!
Watched a Band there..49cent Dress.. They're Great.. G R
Come and see for yourself
A Greenbelt institution, this funky little local cafe is a great place to get a quick cup of coffee, catch a concert, or just hang out.
Great place, great people, great environment. Awesome place if your looking for tasty vegan food. Open Mic night is every Thursday and it's a whole lot of fun. Definitely visit!
The new vegan menu is great, I’ve been here several times and haven’t had a bad dish yet!
Amazing food. Great atmosphere. Exceptional entertainment offerings.
Cool neighborhood cafe with music & entertainment almost every night. Great coffee & delicious pastries. Art on the walls. Beer on tap. Belly dancing, karaoke, the occasional progressive movie. Full disclosure: it's my neighborhood's awesome place, and I think everyone should know about it.
This cafe has a new chef; it is no longer Lebanese food. I had a tortilla soup with fries and it was excellent. The bar and music still rock as well!
Food is all vegan. A nice new option! I go here weekly now. Food arrives pretty quickly too. My favorite so far has been the beyond meat burger with sweet potato fries. I even took my mom here, who “hates” vegan food and she enjoyed it a lot! Good job... hoping the current people can stay for a long time!
Our appetizer arrived 10 minutes after our main dish. My wife was not happy with her food. Mine was just OK.
Good sound level for band playing (the Paul McCartney Experience ) , it was set low enough that ear plugs where not required, and conversation was possible.
Good food and music
Amazing vegan food and a funky vibe. Great music venue.
Great live music venue with delicious plant-based food, including yummy soups and desserts.
New Deal Cafe went Vegan! Plant based food has reached perfection here. I really enjoyed the meals offered and the plentiful music events that happen multiple times a week!
Excellent vegan food! Cozy cafe, friendly great service!
This is a historic location. The food is not the reason to go there. On Monday nights they have speakers and films from a progressive and ecological perspective. Take your liberal friends to see if they can get woke a little bit. The town was an experiment during the Depression to provide good cheap Housing and Community Services to working people. It still has some of that character and is well worth visiting.
Very creative menu.. though not vegetarian we loved the vegan dishes we had
Imaginative vegetarian and vegan meals. Liquor served in bar dinning area
I love this place especially when they have the live band for the FezTones Hafla. Very cozy and friendly. Customer service has improved and they work hard on customer satisfaction. Food is good...never had a bad meal.
Love the vegan food and that they use worms to compost food waste.
This is really the place to go eat and relaxed. When l first visited this place, l was wowed by the background music, made me feel like l was living like a millionaire. Good food and friendly atmosphere.
Funky and fun cafe (up front) and bar (out back) with tasty vegetarian dishes and sweet treats. Often local live music, poetry.
PC establishment. Great vegan only food. High prices. Top bands will entertain you.
Good food in a cool hippy area.
Good food, great prices
OMGOODNESS! I went to The New Deal Cafe for a group meeting and I must say they are a Vegan Restaurant where the food was SUPERB and Fresh. The staff was so friendly and professional. I would definitely go there again.
Only stopped in to have coffee - which wasn't very good, but it was the afternoon, so perhaps it was the bottom of the pot. Looks like an interesting place - lots of community events and a mostly vegan menu. The outdoor seating is quite pleasant.
Fantastic little cafe - good craft beer selection, and very nice staff. It's an order at front, then they bring out your food kinda deal. We had the meaty balls sandwich and the caprese bowl and both were excellent!
Amazing vegan food and sweet humans working the restaurant! Had a delicious time here :)
The food is very good. The menu is now vegan but even if you're a meat person give it a chance because will surprise you in a good way. The restaurant also offer good live music almost every day of the week. The servers are also very nice
We had a great birthday celebration today at New Deal Cafe/Planta. My first time taking my daughters and they loved the vegan food and service.
I called to place an order and was greeted by the awesome Sky!! She was sooooooo pleasant and friendly
