Stylish and such thoughtful selection of books. Great place for events
Excellent coffee shop and book store. Their pastries are always exellent, as are the entrees. Not a place to go it you want cheap mass quantities. All food is worth the price.
A quiet, quaint campus cafe atmosphere in this seemingly hidden gem of Baltimore within the confines of The Ivy Bookshop. Great coffee options and a robust lunchtime fare accentuate this charming little shop.
Their baked goods are amazing. I also love their sparkling water on tap.
Nice place, just drink a good, tasty coffee, read a book and relax!
Great spot to hangout, get a coffee and catch up on a book.
A little on the pricey side but their espresso and food is high quality and worth the splurge. Atmosphere is great - cute decor with lots of books to browse and big windows. The only downside is that it's often very crowded so it can be difficult to find a table to sit at.
Nice bookshop/coffeeshop atmosphere right near Hopkins
Bird in Hand has some pretty great coffee. However, it's only a sometimes treat because the pour-over is really a show and you should take your time to watch it happen.
All around great spot to sip coffee and take a quick break to recharge
Best flat white in Baltimore. Could be the only one. Nevertheless, true antipodean style!
Mouse dropping in every corner along windows Yuck
I really like Bird in Hand. It has a nice ambiance, a combination of both modern and cozy. I first tried their Egg and Cheddar breakfast sandwich and I was very impressed. The texture of the egg was very fluffy. There was just the right amount of cheddar cheese and it blended perfectly with the flavor of the egg. I also had a grilled cheese sandwich here. It was pretty good, but it was a bit pricey and didn't really fill me up.
Light-filled coffee space with an interesting book collection. Will return again and again. Thank you!
I love the Ivy Bookshop selection of books and I want to love the place more for it's great menu (which is pricy) but it simply is WAY too crowded almost all the time. Most of the time all tables are taken, and whenever I go if I have a table, I always share my space with some poor stranger looking around hopelessly for a spot. I don't know if you can address this concern with some re-design, but until you can, I feel like I can't give a better rating. I'll still buy the great books here, though! I no longer have a car and can't visit the original bookshop anymore without a friend to drive me.
Nice atmosphere and fairly wide menu selection. Prices are a little more expensive.
Lots of seating and good coffee
a place for high quality cappuccino !
Really cute place and good coffee but after waiting about 20 minutes for them to bring my coffee to my table and seeing many others get theirs, I asked them about my order which apparently got lost. The girl working didn’t apologize.
Good drinks and eats. A little awkward browsing the fiction section with patrons seated in front of those shelves.
Bird in hand is a consistently wonderful experience to get a delicious warm beverage (be it coffee, espresso laced drinks, hot chocolate, or some soothing tea) and if coffee and drinks were all they did it would be an easy five star - however I'll say that the food is not a great bang for the buck. Thankfully there is tons of good food within walking distance so definitely get your wonderful liquids here and then go elsewhere for solid and cheaper nourishment.
Awesome pour over coffee and really tasty pastries.
Excellent coffee, great staff and lovely ambience for getting work done!
One of the best places to have a good coffee near jhu. The place gets filled up quickly with laptops so reach early if you really want to work from the cafe. For regular patrons, loyalty card is extremely beneficial.
Tragically "hip". Cool tables. Expensive coffee.. I didn't understand how we were supposed to look at the books, as the tables were in front of them, and they were packed..on the weekend.
This is a nice coffeeshop/bookstore by the Johns Hopkins campus. The ambiance is lovely, the food is delicious and so are the drinks but I do think it's a tad pricey. I paid $7 for a grilled cheese which tasted great but the crust was so hard, I could barely eat it. I've been in a few times when there were no open tables to work- it's a new and popular place! They are working on getting in house WiFi but I've been able to connect to another open network in the building.
The sandwiches are tasty, but the bread they use is great!
Very peaceful and relaxed environment similar in style to bus boys and poets
I loved this cafe/bookstore. Cafe is a bit pricey for what it is, but the bookstore is excellent! I loved that they had a rewards punch card for books- for every 10 $15 book purchases, you get a $15 gift card towards books!
Really big open spaced cafe. They give you free seltzer water with your order! Also the books are a nice touch. Still too pricey, however.
Their menu selection has decreased, and the few good vegetarian options are now gone. The remaining options are mediocre at best and not really worth the price you pay for them. Perhaps, just stick to coffee/tea (which is still pretty good) around here for now.
Peaceful
Great experience! Inviting atmosphere! Diverse
Original, trendy, and surprisingly good on the edibles. "Grits" turns out to be an elaborate, balanced meal; the open-faced smoked salmon toast whose name I fail to recall was a culinary experience, for under $5. The only downside to this delightful place is no in-house wifi. Bring your portable hot-spot, or just come to chill, eat good food, and read off their shelves.
Always perfection!
Great selection of books. Cozy.
It’s alright. Very pricey, not many places to sit. The food and coffee are alright
I enjoyed the meal the atmosphere was wonderful,And the service was excellent
Great coffee shop near the University. Plenty of space to work and read. They have events that are free and many bills to borrow to read and for purchase.
beautiful store but coffee is not tasty
Lovely place to study and grab a cup of Joe!
Digging the outdoor seating vibe, seems like the coolest spot in Remington/Charles village. My friend noted that the inside is like Anthropologie ate a library and barfed out a coffee shop. That said, the book selection is very intriguing; not an uninteresting book is to be found on those shelves.
This is a small off-shoot of The Ivy bookstore. There was coffee and some trendy books. It didn't work for me because I was looking for a larger browsing collection and more substantial food.
A beautiful oasis of wonderful books, coffee, and, on this occasion, very good poets.
My favorite espresso!
Honestly the most bland food I have ever had in my life. I don't think my dog would eat it and he's chewed on couch cushions Drinks were great though
i enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere was very wonderful
$1 drip coffee if you have your own container. Very hip spot indeed
Good coffee but a little expensive and often it is hard to find a seat when classes are in session at Hopkins.
Great place to visit with a friend while sipping coffee or tea and having good conversation. There are snacks to choose from and lots of books too.
A nice coffee shop and book store. Elegant and delicious.
Great atmosphere but I can't say I like the taste of the coffee. The food is pretty good, but the portions are smaller than what you get at other places in area.
coffee and books!
Great coffee, a little pricy, good for work.
The staff was knowledgeable about their coffee and served up quickly. The food looked great as well. The space itself has a lot of sunlight and seating available. I really liked that they promoted sustainability by providing a water tap and real glassware for use.
Excellent cappuccino
Bird in Hand is a nice cafe bookstore hybrid that has a sort of trying-too-hard hipster aesthetic but nonetheless is pleasantly decorated. I tried a London fog-esque tea beverage and really enjoyed it. It was delicious and not too sweet. Service was polite.
Great coffee. Not bad food. Good books.
Good cafe with interesting and exciting coffee drink options. Has a book store as well. Good ambience and conveniently located.
Spilled drink all over floor. Unshamingly cleaned it up and brought another latte. Nice to babies.
Very helpful staff, great coffee
Fills that vibe to the T. Chill, open, accepting, clean and high quality. Perfect for a day of studying, reading, or otherwise jchillen. Highly recommend.
Mediocre coffee, good atmosphere..
Nice atmosphere. A little limited in seating when busy and a little pricey for a cup of coffee. But good coffee.
Too crowded, pricey
coffee etc is very good, bookstore is great. 10.3.18: went back for the first time in a while and the coffee was not very good.
It's a nice coffee shop staffed by hipsters, the way it should be.
Super cute and a great place to study. Good coffee and great food
Nice casual spot, runs out of seating quickly though
Love their croissants
This is a nice coffee/book shop. My family has had several of their hot drinks and pastries which was delicious. Their macchiatos are on point! I haven't had any of their food items yet so I can't speak on that. Surprisingly even though it's metered parking, I've never had a problem finding a parking spot.
Lovely staff and great coffee. Very chill ambiance with comfy seating indoors and outdoor seating also available. The books are on display for reading but you could also buy them. A winning combo!
Very nice and cozy place. I see a lot of people working here on their laptops or just reading a book while having one of their amazing home made drinks or sweets! Lunch was very tasteful BUT one toast is not really satisfying (one slice of bread), if they would make it two I would be very pleased since the topping was amazing. Quality over all is really good, I'll definitely go back and enjoy their terrace!
Cute cafe with many nice books! I had a chance to look at beautiful cookbooks in person. Students love it there. I’m not sure it’s a family or kids friendly place since it’s not so spacious. There are 2-3 tables outside, too.
Really friendly staff, nice environment. Upstairs for studying/work. No kitchen, use microwave and toaster for food.....bagel sandwich was yummy regardless. Coffee very good, they roast their own. Not many tea options at all. Great neighborhood coffee shop.
Food was decent, although the polenta we received was unsalted. The real value comes from the atmosphere, which is so cozy and equally inviting to solo and group diners.
A great cozy place to study for hours!
flat white
I was surprised that the coffee was sour, and so was the service.
Top notch pastries.
For a cafe AND a bookshop it is way too crowded. They dont want you browsing or even moving around much.
top 3 coffee places in baltimore. Their pastries are otherworldly and the environment is very cozy. You will always see Hopkins students studying and drinking capuccinos here. its great.
It’s between this place and Three Bean for best coffee in Baltimore. Bird In Hand currently uses Counter Culture beans, which are a personal favorite of mine, and they never disappoint on the latte art front, as some other shops do (Ceremony, obviously Starbucks). The only negative I have to say is this cafe frequently runs out of product, which gets to be a real bother. I’m talking mostly tea and syrups and whatnot. The other day I tried to order a dirty chai, only to be told that they didn’t have chai. The time before that I tried to get the apple cider—didn’t have that either. So whoever does their purchasing needs to order more appropriately for their business levels. Aside from that one drawback though, I’d say it’s my favorite coffee joint in the city.
Great place to study! The coffee and food is delicious and the atmosphere is really chill. Only downside is the price, but the price is pretty standard for a really good latte in Baltimore.
Yummy sandwiches and super service -- even when mobbed. Very accommodating, for our appetites both physical and intellectual!
A bit pricey and they don't have almond milk but still a pretty chill place. I enjoyed my time there.
Cute book store and coffee shop, though a tad pricey. Very popular among the college crowd.
Nice place to work or eat.
Good place to work and get a cup of soup
I will say the only proper coffee bar in baltimore. Staff know the coffee. It may sound skmple but it is hard to be recognized as”know-coffee” it take education and, time, efforts, a lot of efforts. Btw they do pour over here. Coffee is half art and half science. This is the place for REAL coffee.
This is by far and away the best coffee in Baltimore. We've been to many of the other established joints in the area as well as some of the newer places in Fells, Canton, and Fed Hill. Nobody pulls a better shot of espresso and their staff is very warm and friendly. They also bring in fresh baked goods and patisserie, which are incredible. It truly feels like a neighborhood joint where people remember your name while also providing an elevated coffee experience.
Exceeded my expectations! The smoked fish was delicious, and the grits were very creatively prepared. Gluten-free sliced bread and muffins are available and can be substituted at no additional charge. There is a small but highly interesting selection of books to browse for purchase. The cafe remained comfortable and relaxed even during the busy Sunday midday hours.
Real food, coffee, college kids, bookstore, comfortable, sit in or out, $$
Expensive, but good food/coffee, nitro cold brew is worth it.
Small cups but good coffee.
Very nice coffee place with great atmosphere!
Just adorable with a great selection of treats coffees and a fabulous bookstore
Food is good but overpriced. Pastries are terrible. Go to Carma's for pastries.
Funky, great coffee. Nitro cold brew is awesome!
I always have meetings with my volunteers here and love the commadery and drinks here.
Average
Cosy coffee shop/bookstore in Charles Village. Really good coffee and yummy pastries. Great selection of books. This cafe is cute and comfy with awesome coffee and food!
Amazing service
Great coffee and atmosphere, so my wife and I bought one of their mugs. Even the outdoor seating was pleasant.
All staff were amazing that served us tonight.
Hip, chill, maybe a tad what-you-dont-know-your-arabica-beans? But cool space and killer coffee. Had the espresso and it almost tasted like chocolate.
It's a really nice coffee shop! We usually use it as an alternative to the library, as a study place. The productivity here is a amazing! Other than that, they have an amazing collection of books to purchase! And the books definitely add to the ambience!
Kind people and great books. Frequently crowded and a bit pricey.
Nice spot for a small bites and coffee. Usually there are people with computers working.
Great coffee drinks, unusual hot chocolates, a few thousand distinguished books. Their food choices are eclectic. We tried the butternut squash as well as the tomato soups which we enjoyed. The egg kale muffin sandwich was superb. The Speegle Smacks & Honey Bee breakfast bowls were delicious. Spacious interior with individual as well as common tables. Definitely a place to revisit.
Super chill. Great food. Amazing coffee. Great place for a peaceful date without breaking the bank.
This place knows how to make a proper machiotto! So good!
Good food, good coffee, a nice staff, and a really nice atmosphere. My one complaint is that there aren't many seats that have computer chargers nearby, but even that's not as bad as it could be.
Staff were courteous and friendly and the iced coffee was excellent!
Great service, coffee and atmosphere.
Great place to get some coffee
Nicely curated use of books, and great coffee.
I always love coming to Bird in Hand not only for a coffee or breakfast, but also to browse the books! Their food is delicious, but also very pricey. I love that they have self-serve tap and sparkling water available. They have a fairly large drink menu, with specialty coffees, teas, matcha, and chai.
It is regular cafe. Its good for doing casual work and they have good food if you get hungry. They are a little pricey.
Always a pleasant start to the day
All amazing except seating is hard to come by!
Probably one of the pricier lattes I've had (more than $5), but good nonetheless. Good selection of dairy free options (they had oat milk in addition to almond and soy milk). Shop is bright and clean and has ample seating. Employees were attentive and reasonably friendly. Might go back, only reservation is the price.
A book lover's bookstore cafe. Great selection, always fresh and current. Progressive and inclusive. The food tastes homemade. Like, really made with care. Expect nothing less from a Gjerde establishment. The only downside is that it's often busy and can be hard to get a table. Just a good excuse to browse a good book while eating.
Love Bird in Hand! Really enjoyed my nitro cold brew and zucchini loaf with maple icing. Bold flavor profile, excellent quality beans, and adorable atmosphere. They have created a warm and inviting space that's great for casual meet-ups, coffee dates, book lovers and more.
Surprisingly good book selection and very good espresso!
The Coffee was alright, the staff was pleasant. The Establishment was filthy. There was dust on the bottoms of all of there chairs, not like a light coating, dust bunny style filth. Their HVAC vents were caked in dirt and dust to the point where it felt mildly disgusting to be breathing in the. The shop wasn't crowded and there was plenty of staff who could have been doing basic cleaning. This is a simple fix that anyone who had any respect for their business or clientele would ensure was done on a regular basis. If you want to overpay for coffee in a dirty setting, this is your place.
