I have always enjoyed the Riverside for a couple of decades now, however today I inquired about the buckwheat pancakes because for years I have enjoyed them w Maine blueberries and real maple syrup here. A few weeks ago the pancakes were a bit fluffier and thicker than before and I didn't really think about it until I had some gut issues later that day. I am WHEAT sensitive so I have enjoyed being able to get pure buckwheat pancakes out at a restaurant but today I specifically asked the waitress to check w the kitchen to see of they had changed the recipe and if they now had WHEAT in the buckwheat pancakes. She thought they did not but she asked anyway and indeed they DO now Contain WHEAT . I am very disappointed. See I make good omelettes at home so the 100% buckwheat pancakes where such a special treat. I want to let other wheat sensitive folks out there so they don't figure the recipe is the same. Very saddened because I will now only visit when relatives are in town. I gave 3 stars because the other food has always been good especially the home fries.

Best eggs benedict I think I may have ever had. I did the veggie and the lobster with avocado (YUM!!). They have homemade everything, including their orange juice. We tried a homemade cinnamon roll which was so good! The hashbrowns are so crispy and delicious and the pancakes were amazing. It was refreshing to find a place that takes pride in every part of the dishes they prepare.

Great espresso drinks and orange juice is so fresh and great. The ambience is also good. The servers were nice and friendly. The location of the Cafe is great. There are lot of gift shops close by.

Fare amount of veggie/ vegan menu items. I had the Wrap it up tofu & veggie wrap. Tasty, not overly huge. Delicious housemade Red pepper hummus with huge amount of tortilla chips. I asked for the pickles.

Friendly service and great food. Menu is sort of upscale diner for breakfast (try the Crab Benedict!), fancy soup and sandwiches for lunch. The dining room is bright and airy with lots of wood details. Oh, FWIW, cash or check only, they don't take cards.

Waited 15 minutes in line with several tables available, no names were being taken and no one was paying any attention to those of us waiting. No names were being taken and it was unclear who was next in line. Total chaos was apparent and didn't bode well for a pleasant meal. Gave up and went elsewhere.

Love the food here! The pancakes are the best! They close at 2. We got there at 2:07 just for coffee to go. They ended up making a fresh pot of coffee just for us!! What great customer service! I would eat breakfast everyday here.

LOVE this place!! We were vacationing from Maryland and after the first visit we decided to go back the next day it was that good. Biscuits and gravy are amazing. My husband said the omlet he got was of the best he has ever had. Everything is amazing! Service was awesome... Waitresses on both occasions were super friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.

The music is 70s, 80s, and the food is plentiful and delicious! What a find to be driving through this town of Ellsworth and happen upon the Riverside Cafe. The egg menu looked extensive but I ordered a plate with fruit, yogurt and granola. Just wonderful especially since I was able to take advantage of the best time for blueberries in the best blueberry State! Stop by this very enjoyable cafe soon!

Very large seating area, very friendly staff, and they are more than accommodating when asking for changes in menu items. Omlets are large and indeed overstuffed with fresh ingredients. Food was properly cooked to order, and the staff go out of there way to ensure you are satisfied with your meal. Restaurant was very clean,well layed out. There may be a wait during tourist season that should be expected, especially in the location of Downtown Ellsworth, known as the Crossroads of Down East Maine. Overall, had a great meal, and enjoyed my breakfast, and plan to review their lunches at a later date.

I would never eat here again and the owner should be ashamed of the food being served and of the lack of respect for their customers. I ordered a fried haddock sandwich. It came on a sesame seeded bun (no description of this in the menu) and had to wait 6 minutes for my waitress to return to ask if everything was okay. She did return with a bottom bun that made my sandwich edible, or so I thought until I took a bite. My fish was rubbery and tasted very fishy. Haddock does not usually taste fishy which is why I like it. But it also should be light and flaky, not rubber. It was inedible and the taste made me question the freshness and my safety. So I told the waitress that I did not want to keep the sandwich. When she brought the bill, the sandwich was not taken off. I asked her to take it off. She snapped that she would have to ask the owner or manager. I said yes, that is what usually happens. She returned and said the owner or manager said that he would take of $5. It is customary in any restaurant to not charge for food that was given back. Sadly, you have one job, to serve delicious food. If you can't successfully do your one job, you should try a different business venture, because food isn't it for the Riverside Caf'e.

The first time I went I said no dairy and some dairy was in my food. However, after a few years I gave them another chance and I have had no issues since. I think it was probably just human error. Unfortunate, but understandable. The Cafe has a nice atmosphere and the food is good.

This is an old standby for ellsworth. Has been a main street restaurant for a ling time. And why is that? Because the food is consistently good. You know when you go to the riverside, your meal will be good. Bottom line. Their fries are excellent. Um not a big french fry eater, but theirs are heavenly. Crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Yum.

What a delightful "little" cafe! I came in this morning to grab a bite (#1, upgrade to homemade honey wheat and a short stack of buttermilk pancakes). I was welcomed and seated quickly. The restaurant was clean and smelled of breakfast yummyness. My server was incredibly fast, friendly and knowledgeable. The food was cooked well and tasted great. The atmosphere was perfect for a single diner or a group. I will be back at my next opportunity to try a special.

What a gem. Fabulous options for vegetarians that is something aside from just a salad. Veggie burger was fabulous - patty was well made and delightful. This place is a gem in the little town of Ellsworth. My husband and I stopped in here for lunch on vacation and were pleasantly surprised at the DELICIOUS food and good prices. Portion sizes were generous and staff was friendly. Our waitress, Rosie, was a sweetheart. We highly recommend!

Not at all a good place to find breakfast as a vegan. There were only 2 options, neither of which were quite what they should have been. Only one bread option with no form of vegan butter. The french toast was burnt black on one side while raw inside and nearly inedible. The tofu scramble was quite good, but was actually a mushroom and veggie hash with some cubed tofu rather than a scramble. Overall, while the service and ambiance were nice, I will not be returning.

Acadia is one of my favorite vacation spots and I visit every couple of years. I have made a habit of frequenting this breakfast spot on the way out of town each time. However, after my recent couple of experiences I will be looking around for other options. Here are some notes from our last visit, Tuesday, 8/23: - Street parking was easy and we got a table quickly, likely due to mid-week breakfast. - Server took a while to take our order and bring our drinks, even though it wasn't all that busy. She didn't seem to be all that happy to be at work, either... - Coffee was average - lukewarm and somewhat watery. - We were never offered a refill on coffee by our server and we ran out of cream within that first round. - One member of our party got chocolate milk which was basically white milk with chocolate syrup, floaties and all - not all that appealing. - Portions were sizeable, no problem there. - We all thought we ordered the homemade sourdough bread, but what we got was bland thick-cut white bread. - While there was a basket of Smucker's jams, the options were limited mostly being some sort of Cinnamon Apple. - Two of us ordered ham and it was very fatty, such that we could only eat two-thirds of it. - Over-easy eggs were undercooked in the middle. - There was an upcharge for maple syrup for pancakes - really? Who eats pancakes without maple syrup? And we're in Maine. Shouldn't it always be real maple syrup? Just build it into the cost structure of the food. - We weren't offered 'to go' packs for our leftovers and had to fend for ourselves. - The bathrooms are both singles and the door sticks on the one I used. I couldn't tell if it was locked or not. Thankfully, it was, but only found that out when someone tried opening it on me. With some minor improvements, this place could be much better. For now, I'll try other spots and circle back if I hear/read good things about Riverside again...

Just got a coffee and muffin to go. Coffee was lukewarm and served in styrofoam cups. Styrofoam leaches carcenogenic chemicals into hot drinks. The muffin was cold from refrig and had 2 raspberries in it. It tasted like it was from Sam’s Club. It too was served in styrofoam. 2 small coffees and 2 lousy muffins all in styrofoam cost almost $10. Major bummer.
