The chia latte is the best I've had in Maine. The service is knowledgeable and friendly. The ambiance is great--love being able to look into the open room where the coffee is brewed. The pictures of the workers and families in the coffee area help me realize that Coffee by Design is a mission and not just a business. My spirit is always lifted from my experience of good hospitality, a caring enterprise formed with good values, and, oh, yes, that great cup of chia latte.

Meh. I ask for dark roast. "Not heavy roast, please make sure!" I say. They confirm, this is not a heavy roast. It was a leaden, barely drinkable heavy roast. By then, though, I was already in the car. My partner and I dumped our $6 worth of coffee out and lamentably went to another cafe. I'm not sure what's up with the crude oil coffee these days, but I feel like people just pretend to like its nuance while inwardly grimacing.

Coffee by Design is truly passionate about coffee. This location is where the coffee is roasted and it offers an all-glass wall so that visitors can observe the operation. The smell is incredible, as are the stories of the farms the beans are sourced from. It's a fantastic meeting spot.

Came in to get a cup of coffee. They don't do tours of the roastery on weekends, but I stuck my head in to look around. Kevin came over and offered to let me look around - he gave me a full tour and an amazing introduction to how they handle their coffees and some of the different flavor profiles. Phenomenal tour. When I finally got around to getting the cup of coffee (Guatemalan Acatenango cold brew) that was great too.

Coffee mediocre at best and service kinda lame. Folks who work here seem to be rather non-committed about the job and clueless about the content. I think I can afford to be critical because I did this job as a college grad in a college town in Florida for years and my colleagues and I took more pride in our work despite our educational attainment. Though honestly, it must be hard for them to get excited about mediocre, bland coffee.

So smooth... and the kind of coffee that you absolutely don't need to spoil with a flavoured syrup. One of the best coffee shops in Portland. The Mochas are so good. I used to love their spicy chai when they carried Pacific brand but now they have a new one that I am not a big fan. I would suggest going back to Pacific if possible or checking out Big Train brand. Great place to buy some different types of coffee roasts and you get a free drink when you by a bag, or something like this. They also carry some great sandwiches, the only bad thing is that they run out fast, so I am never sure if I could stop by to get a bit and coffee. They also have some baked goods from local places. I am always happy when they have the veggie hand pie from Two Fat Cats.
