This Coffee Shop corresponds to the category of Ethiopian restaurant.
Delicious food and friendly staff. Every time I go, I’m never disappointed. This is one of the few places I crave often in KC. I highly recommend going out of your comfort zone to try Ethiopian cuisine here at Blue Nile Cafe! The red lentil stew is my favorite and it comes with collard greens, cabbage and carrots in a yellow sauce, and potatoes in the same red sauce as the lentils. Also, injera, the greatest bread ever.
Came here after an afternoon of exploring downtown KC and was not disappointed! We tried the sampler and highly recommend trying it as well. Everything was so good! We also tried the spiced iced tea and the mango smoothie which were also so wonderful!
Awesome, fresh, homemade food. Great flavors. Perfect prices
Friendly staff. Delicious food.
Great food buffet nice variety
Fantastic Ethiopian food. Really good if your lady on man is a vegetarian/vegan
Quintessential Ethiopian food. The atmosphere is that of an outdoor market cafe. There's so many legumes, meat dishes, spiced sauces. Something for everyone to try. Curry, chick peas, lamb, and so many tasty dishes! Get the sampler meal so you can try the main entrees and sides.
Delicious authentic Ethiopian cuisine and great service.
True soul food! My favorite place to dine! The staff is amazing and engaging. Best traditional buffet in the city!! Hands down!!
We were sad to find out upon moving to Topeka that the closest Ethiopian restaurant was in KC. We made sure to pick up take out on our way home from the most recent KC trip. The service was great, but the food was a little disappointing. It tasted very Americanized. There wasn't much variation in the flavor of the dishes and they were fairly bland.
Excellent little restaurant with delicious food and warm, friendly service.
Consistently great food and service. Lots of vegetarian options.
Very good, different then what some people would try however I liked it.
Great ethiopian restaurant.
The best Ethiopian Restaurant in KC. Plus great service.
If you haven't had Ethiopian food before you need to check out this place. It's traditional eating style so you eat with your hands (they do provide silverware though) and use flat, sourdough-like bread to pick up the food. It's in a great location in the river market but the spac itself is fairly small and it is slightly pricey.
Wonderful people, and very nice employees who work here. Very good food! I will be back again to eat here.
Incredible food every time!!!! Vegan option that aren’t an after thought. Really good service. Whole, home cooked, supremely nutritious food!
One of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. Thank you so much to Alisa for taking such wonderful care of us!
Food is amazing here, if you've never been before you should go at lunch, as it's a all you can eat buffet, so you can figure out what you like and don't.
Very interesting food and great service.
Pretty good food
Wonderful food. Great service . The owners are really nice too .
Loved it. Great food. Great service. We'll be back!
Wife loves this place, nice to try somerhing different. Good experience.
Love the food
Great little restaurant, it was my first time eating Ethiopian food and I was pleasantly surprised. They have really good Mead as well, give it a try.
Love the lunch buffet. Every item is tasty. Definitely recommend. And don't forget to have the coffee after your meal.
Veggie plate, baklava and coffee were all awesome! Plenty of vegan options! Higly Recommended
Delicious food and a lovely server. Can't ask for more. Three of us shared the combination dish for two and brought home leftovers.
Good food. Nice place. Nice people. Enjoyed.
Blue Nile is a must for both those who are new to Ethiopian cuisine and to those looking for an Ethiopian fix in Kansas City. The sampler platter is where to start, and offers over 10 items to taste and enjoy. Don't miss the Doro Wat. Gluten free paradise, including the injera.
I got the sampler platter for two which I highly recommend if you've never been here before. More than enough delicious and amazing food! The service was excellent! The baklava and mango juice were perfect ways to end the meal. It's definitely on my list of places to return to when I visit Kansas City.
Went for the lunch buffet. Fantastic food at a very good price. Nice little selection. Mango Juice was about as pure as it gets. Nice and thick, freshly blended.
I would give this place six stars if I could
The food is so yummy. Super friendly people ♥ It's my favorite restaurant. The drinks are yummy too. They also have vegetarian options. Great restaurant.
Delicious and I imagine wholesome and healthy food. Good vegan choices and reasonably priced. A little heavy on the salt-take this which a grain of salt if you wish because it is true of almost every eating out experience there is. I like lemons (or limes) with my water, which they didn't seem to have--maybe this is a little finicky on my part. Maybe there's a little discomfort when you return for more. Nice location and interior, though I like it, I wish it were a little more Ethiopean Orthodox specifically than generally African.
Food and prices was good
I’ve had Ethiopian food all over the US and this one comes in pretty near the top. (Nothing has topped Denver’s selection yet though) My old neighbor is Ethiopian and she too thinks this is good for a restaurant, although nothing compares to homemade foods. If you’ve never had Ethiopian food, let your guard down and give it a try, you may be pleasantly surprised. Branch out and enjoy! For all the naysayers posts, just remember that people have different tastes and some people never like anything.
Food is good, I do recommend coming here for lunch, staff are friendly, and it's a favorite in the community. Service can be a little slow because there are usually only two workers. There are some secret menu items... So ask for them!
I thought the food was quite fantastic! Very filling! May not be everyone's cup of tea but you can't deny the friendly and fast service. Our server was GOLDEN
Great little hole in the wall the food is amazing and the wait staff goes above and beyond on their service!!
Had a wonderful meal at Blue Nile. Buffet had choices of beef, lamb, and chicken. I chose chicken along with collard greens and lentil salad. Had to pick hot peppers out of lentils. Drank sourced ice tea and finished the meal with rice pudding. Delicious.
Fantastic food! Ginger iced tea. Other great vegan fare!
The people were very polite and helpful. They discussed the menu with me and helped me select my first try of Ethiopian food. The food was great!
Food was okay, INCREDIBLY filling, but the service wasn't the best
Great traditional Ethiopian food, injera is fresh! Something for everyone! Vegan options, as well as gluten free. Tip your server! They're so gracious and kind.
Awesome place, and a great change from all the bar/pub food generally available.
Buffet style. Because it was our first time, the staff was very helpful. The food was delicious. Great location. Quiet atmosphere.
Everything was delicious that we tried, especially the vegan dishes, wow! The waiter was attentive and knowledgeable and helped us choose. I'll be back again soon for sure.
This was our first taste of Ethiopian food, it was everything I was told it would be. Flavorful and spicy, with plenty of options. The waitress was very helpful and friendly. Our food came out very quickly (we had dinner), and was fresh. I also had the mango juice which was sweet and tasty a nice contrast to the spicy main dish. Would highly recommend Blue Nile Cafe!
The honey wine with the Sampler Platter was a great choice for our first time experiencing Ethiopian food. This was very delicious and our waitress was wonderful!
Fantastic food - 10 year old liked it too.
One of the only places you can get genuine Ethiopian cuisine in Kansas City. The food was fantastic, this is also in the well-known River Market District. Zach, the Host was especially helpful by recommending dishes to try, if you've never tried Ethiopian food before. He checked on us more than a few times to make sure the food was good and that we were enjoying the Atmosphere.
Very nice change of pace. Ample portion and very tasty.
Love this restaurant. Atmosphere is perfect for a date night. Food has never let me down already flavorful and well made.
I come here every time I visit. The food is fantastic (and authentic-I'm Eritrean), and the setting is intimate & casual. I don't know the history of the place, but since I see the same servers and staff here, I would guess it's a family-oriented establishment. Plenty of nearby parking, and the waitstaff is friendly. For those who are in need, you can buy ingredients to make your own food, or a platter of injera to go. ***There are forks available for the faint of heart! But really, you won't need one. They even provide steamed washcloths to clean up with after your meal.
Like so many others posting, this was my first time with Ethiopian food, and I was not disappointed. I explained to the gentleman serving that it was my first time here, and he fixed me up a variety plate with just about everything they make on it. The whole plate was devoured with the incredible and fresh bread they serve. I also added a mango-cherry bottom for refreshment. I'll definitely be back, and be back often.
It's always tasty
Food was fantastic! This was a really unique experience and the honey wine was especially good. I suggest the meat and vegetable sampler to try everything. We got great service from Alisa and will definitely be coming back.
WOW! This place is small and unassuming, but amazing. We went for the buffet lunch on a Saturday. Staff was super friendly and helpful (it was out first time trying Ethiopian). The food was great. Many of the dishes are gluten free and/or vegan. I definitely will be going back.
Its aiite. Just not my cup of chai
Every time I go here I'm completely satisfied. Worth your money every time, large portions, delicious food. If you're looking for the best value, go on Sunday morning and get their lunch buffet. For dinner, order a plate for 2. They also have a plate for 4 but, I've never ordered it. I assume it's just as good with the same or better value. Keep an open mind with the injera. You gotta get used to the fermented bread and get good at using it to truly appreciate the food. Have a traditional coffee service after for $15 I think. Service is always nice and it's a small enough restaraunt that they will probably recognize you if you show up a lot. (such as myself) Did I mention like half the food is vegetarian/vegan? So, bring all your friends, get a huge plate, enjoy some coffee, and walk out with a happy belly and wallet.
Love this little gem in the river market! Service is always top notch. The food is consistently delish! Its fun to eat the combo platter with friends and discuss the yummy!
Great food! The staff was so polite and welcoming, we got an authentic Ethiopian experience
they call it buffet but you can't actually serve yourself. Also they don’t give you more enjera. This is not habesh restaurant.
Great food, good service. Love the coffee. Very popular lunch buffet. It's best to go around 1:30 p.m. after the lunch rush has faded.
Loved the food and the price. Very cheerful honey service. Nice to explain dishes. Buffet choices.
My husband and I loved ❤️ their food . The sampler plate for two was amazing
My boyfriend insisted we come here and honestly I am so glad we did. The food is absolutely incredible! The Staff is also super friendly and didn't even judge me for not being able to handle spicy food. I would highly recommend this place. Amazing.
This is the first time I have tried Ethiopian food. It was great. I love Spivey food and the service was friendly and welcoming, no matter how many questions I had about the food and ingredients. The buffet is well worth the money.
Really liked their all you can eat lunch buffet. Very good selections of meat and veggies. And I was surprised they had more veggie options than meat. Everything tasted so good especially the spice level was perfect that I definitely want to try this place again.
We enjoy this place. They offer a gluten free option. The food has good flavor and texture.
Friendly service and great tasting comfort food. The coffee was also awesome and paired great with the delicious baklava.Loved it! Will be back!
Had the pleasure of eating here today. Like most of the places in City market it's small but we got there after the lunch rush so we almost had the place to ourselves. We we're greeted quickly and warmly. Food was delicious. The all you can eat food bar is well stocked. There is something for meat eaters and vegans alike. Wish we had gone sooner.
Excellent, healthful, flavorful food at competitive pricing (buffet currently $10 weekdays, $11 weekends). Plentiful vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options on the buffet and dinner menu. The only thing I'd like to see removed is the $2 upcharge per small plate of gluten free injera. Yes, teff and other gluten-free grains are slightly more pricey than the cheaper, default wheat-based injera being served, but it feels a bit overpriced to those who cannot tolerate gluten, as Ethiopian cuisine just isn't the same with injera.
Been here twice so far. Both times, I came in starving due to my bike excursions & arriving close to mid-afternoon. Both times, I left absolutely stuffed from just 1 1/2 to 2 plates. The chili & mushrooms are absolutely delicious, & the flatbread will do the trick in filling you up. 1st time last summer, I just completed the Kessler bike trails & arrived here at around 3:00, which is a long time from breakfast to then. I got so full, I could barely touch the 2nd plate. 2nd time, March 22nd, I biked from Blue Springs to Independence Center, took the bus to Maple Park, biked up & down the Heart of America bridge, came in after 2:00, smashed 2 plates, hit the Rozarks Trails, bussed back home, & was still full up until 10:00 that night. TLDR: If you're a big, adventurous guy with an appetite of a hippo during your long day of biking, then stop by, try new food, & get satisfied!!
Tasty food. Enjoyed combo plate.
Delicious food, great prices, super friendly service. Definitely try this place.
Fun and unique! I had a little of everything! The flat bread is airy and delightfully spongy with a slight sourdough flavor that adds so much to every dish. The buffet is great for trying it all and having more of your favorites! If you're vegitarian this is a great place! And if you like meat, as do I, this is a great place! Im coming back with friends. Clean causual atmosphere with a friendly and helpful staff! Finally, of course in happy that I can have wine or beer among other beverages :)
This was a fun adventure. The restaurant has a great outdoor seating, fun for enjoying the seasons with friends or family. The sample platter was wonderful as it has good portions of many of their delicious and savory dishes. Their sour dough flatbread, injera, very much like a sour dough crepe was a surprise only to find out that traditionally, this is what is used to eat with, instead of silverware. Since our first visit we have been back again this time bringing more friends. Recommended.
Great weekday lunch buffet!
I wasn't fond of this place. The lunch buffet was a good idea, so I could try a variety of dishes. It was spicy, but not too spicy. Lentils appeared in most of the dishes. The soup (squash and lentil) and the Inguday Watt (mushroom and lentil) dishes were the best. The flat bread that you're supposed to eat with had a strange, almost citrus flavor to it. This place reminded me of a less spicy, less diverse Indian buffet.
Very friendly staff. Nice atmosphere. The less spicy items are very well done. The spicy items leaves much to be desired. Same combination of spices are used in many dishes, which cannot be authentic.
Always, always delicious! Great service.
The food alone is 5 stars. We ordered the 2 person platter to try it all. But the service was questionable. Ordered green tea and the waiter brought a single Twinings tea bag and didn't even bother bringing a tea/coffee cup for the hot drink. Instead expected me to drink hot tea in a short water glass and charged me $8!!! Waiter refused to refund me even though I clearly never drank any of it. Doing take out next time.
Menu has Gluten Free and Vegan options. One of my favorite restaurants in downtown KC.
I got a great meal here, and it was super affordable.
Never walk away hungry
Atmosphere was excellent. Food was delicious. I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to try something new.
Awesome authentic food. Very friendly staff. Must visit if u love food. Great vegan and vegetarian options too..
The food was great (it has been over 2yrs) I never had so many different vegetables that tasted so good, The service was good they took their time to explain everything, went over two years ago but havent been back to the city market to eat if I do I would go back,.
Loved the food, great service, friendly staff! I'm definitely going back
We really enjoyed the Ethiopian experience. Especially liked that we could choose our dishes buffet style.
I love this place! Food is amazing, the staff is always so nice. The owners are almost always there and amazingly hospitable. Definitely a must stop place if you've never been. Also, try the coffee. Any to-do list you have for the day will disappear. Bonus points for having a buffet at lunch with tons of vegetarian/vegan dishes
I’ve had Ethiopian food a few times before and liked it, but Blue Nile is something special. We got the combo platter, which was more than enough for two with tons of leftovers! Every single item was absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend this place to anyone interested in trying Ethiopian cuisine as well as to those who already know and love the flavors!
Beautiful smiles and great food!
Amazing food and great staff. My wife and I love this place.
Great food and prices. Must try if in KC.
Such savory foods, unique presentation and a unique way to eat. Don't shy away because it's different. Embrace a new way of eating some more foods The prepared slightly different.
Fantastic! A great lunch deal with delicious variety of flavors! I wish it was closer to home. Its almost a place a want to keep secret.
Very slow service. Extremely disappointed. Did not have a menu item I ordered. 40 minute wait for food is unacceptable. I will not return and I recommend seeking other restaurants.
I was so excited to eat here, based on the reviews. The food was horrible. No flavor. I left a full plate of food. I felt bad about that.
If you’re looking for a chilled vibe, a good one on one date or group of friends to try something exotic. This is the spot. The food and the atmosphere is immersive and divine. So many flavors and such an amazing experience! Affordable prices and a huge variety of foods and drinks to choose from.
First time here, didn't know what to expect. Food was amazing.
Fantastic buffet with friendly staff! I can't get enough of the rice pudding!
Amazing food great customer Services, lovely music the Ethiopian food ever in Kansas
Food was great but the price was crazy
First time there. Food was delicious, server was super nice and helpful. We'll come back for the buffet sometime and try everything.
My first experience here was on a cold Sunday and my partner and I went on a whim. We had no idea it was a buffet but I’m glad we were able to try everything! Most of the food I ate was vegan with one vegetarian option being the rice pudding dessert. I have a hard time deciding what I liked best but I included a photo of the delightful injera bread that is served with all meals. The server working was SO kind and helpful. I think he mentioned being short staffed that day yet he never once seemed impatient with all of my questions. A few weeks later we returned and the same kind server was working and remembered us! I meant to write a review simply after our great experience with the service here. The food is also amazing. Oh and we tried the coffee. Also very good and comes with a nice back story.
Salam ( wish you well ) in my language but that is the owner of Cafe here , coffee is 100% Ethiopian & very fine quality . Food is also very nice quality along with the exceptionally nice service . You will enjoy & appreciate the experience for life .
Great food
Tasty and a good value for the money. I only had the buffet, and it was my first time trying Ethiopian food. It was good but not great. I'm curious to try the regular menu.
Simply amazing! I’ve never had anything like it and they had plenty of plant-based friendly dishes. I ate a ton and felt great after eating it. Would recommend.
Good food and drinks. Got to watch a mama bird feeder her baby bird too
Went for buffet on Wednesday afternnon. Place was empty. Think there were nine options 7 of which were vegetarian. We each had 4 different options piled on yellow rice. All were excellent. Soup too. Rolled up spongy bread is excellent with stew type dishes. Only small critique is food could have been hotter. Seemed tepid. Still tasty though. All for $9.95 all you care to eat.
I was hesitant to try it out but Alisa G sold me on giving it a shot. Not only was the food incredible and reasonably priced for what you were getting, but Alisa was fantastic and provided AMAZING customer service. Will definitely come again.
Go here during buffet hour! Try everything - very delicious. Extremely nice staff
Amazing food, small boutique, great buffett, reminds me of Indian food. Service was only average but food was tasty but not too spicy
The staff is very friendly. We had vegetarian meals, which were excellent!
Great lunch buffet going on here. Food tastes great and good value for money as well. Try their spiced ice tea - it's a real treat on a hot summer day!
My husband and I love Ethiopian cuisine. In fact it was at the Blue Nile Cafe that we first tried and fell in love with the food 7 years ago. We ate there yesterday on our way through Kansas City for a good times throw back. It was not the same food. And this was the first time we had Ethiopian food that we didn’t completely enjoy. It was too salty in general and the collard greens were so salty they were almost inedible. Maybe it’s an attempt to satisfy the general public or we got them on a bad day
This is the favorite restaurant for both my wife and myself. We go during the day between 12 and three and enjoy the scrumptious Ethiopian buffet. Simple atmosphere but excellent food. The founder is an authentic Ethiopian with a great culinary skills
I really like Blue Nile. I'm a big fan on Indian food and this is fairly similar, but distinct and a really nice change from the usual.
Closest to Indian food. Tried vegetarian options. They were amazing
Best Ethiopian in the city? Probably
Great service and the food was great as well!
It's a small place so not ideal for a big group, but the food and service are great. It's one of our favorite places in KC. The food is especially great for a chilly day when you want comfort food that isn't too heavy.
Sooooo good. I've eaten Ethiopian food in Kenya and Blue Nile is fairly similar. Try the sampler platter!
super yummy and great coffee
Great place for vegetarian dishes, the service is great. My girlfriend and I will keep coming back.
If you are in River Market area give this place a try.You won't be disappointed. The service and food were excellent.
I would rate then 4.5 alas it only lets you choose whole numbers. Really good food. Lots of vegetarian options. Service is fair to good depending on the luck of the day I have gone. It is a little pricy. Dinner for two can easily run you over 50-60$ for not that much food and no alcohol.
You cannot beat their 10$ lunch buffet.
Delicious all-you-can-eat buffet with reasonable prices and friendly staff. Highly recommended.
Lunch buffet is incredible. Injera is the most delicious substance ever designed to deliver food into your mouth. If you're there with a date for dinner ask about splitting a vegetarian sampler. It's all vegan and amazingly delicious and so fun to share.
Amazing Food!! Great Vegan options and so delicious. Staff was friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back!!
Had the buffet. Plenty of vegan options. Left with a FULL BELLY!!! THANK YOU BLUE NILE!!!
Located by the Market area in the fun downtown Kansas City this is an exotic option for lunch. The parking around the area is not difficult, although street parking can be a bit difficult, there is plenty of metered lots around and when we came for lunch over the weekend it was not difficult at all to get the car parked. They have a very rustic looking and the eating experience is fun and very easy. they also have plenty of seating and a great service. Our waiter was pretty attentive and fast to explain how the lunch experience worked. Here you have a cafeteria style all you can eat. The waiter serves the drinks, but keep in mind that on weekends they seemed not to be able to serve alcohol, he told me why but I forgot right now the reason. So when you ready to eat you just go to the window where the food is displayed and tell the server what you want in your plate, they serve you and you eat, you are allowed to come back as many times as you wish and eat as much as you can. Here was my combo. RICE- pretty good as rice is expected BEEF CHILI- I was expecting it to be super spicy but the truth was that is was not, I was glad cause I like to taste my food and not burn inside (if you like spicy this might be too mild for you and you should ask for some spicy sauce cause there was nothing spicy in the meal) CABBAGE- this was some amazing cabbage I can safely say, I am not a super fan of it, but this one was perfect and the seasoning was pretty amazing. MUSHROOM GRAVY- it was some sort of paste but it was pretty nice to try. COLLARD GREENS- since I am not a super fan of that, I could have gone without it, but it was tasty and if you like your greens you should definitely go for it. LENTIL MASH- it was pretty nice and tasty, again the seasoning here was the rockstar making the side amazing in taste and blending well with the rest of the meal LENTIL SOUP- very nice as well, but I would not go for it as the lentil mash was more than enough I felt, but if you are a lentil lover, you will have an amazing time here. INJERA- this is like a traditional tortilla, it has a spongy texture and taste a bit sour and bitter at the same time, this is a very nice little tortilla when eaten with the meal while warm. I just want to point out here for the people who are watching their figure that the meals from that part of the world, specially the INJERA is SUPER high on calories and such, so if you come here make sure to do a super tourist walk after cause the calories you will have here are going to be off the charts. since they were not serving alcohol we only had water, we did not have dessert cause we went for it elsewhere just for the experience, but I can tell you that the meal was pretty good and it is not the first time I come here, you definitely should give it a try not only for the food but also for the experience of having a meal from another part of the world.
Fresh and authentic food. Great customer service too.
Absolutely superb food! All you can eat with vegetarian and vegan options. It is a little spicy which I certainly enjoy but I would definitely recommend to anyone! The only downside is there was some funky chemical smell when we entered the cafe. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would.
Probably the only place I constantly will go to when I am in Kansas City. Friendliest staff with great food in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
Excellent food. Very nice and efficient staff. Simple venue, but clean and with outdoor seating. Again, the food is fantastic.
Love this place everytime we go. The waitress left half way through because she was probably drunk, but someone else picked up our stuff super quickly. Given how badly that could have gone, seriously impressed. The food is one of a kind for the kc area. Tastes like home if home were a wealthy Ethiopian household.
The service was great, just did not care for the food. Wanted to try something different and it was. Some of the food was too spicy for members of our party.
Very tasty. Not spicy enough for me as I used to live in Ethiopia. But yummers!!
Really helpful staff. I am GF and my friend is vegan, and we both enjoyed a full meal without sacrificing anything--a rarity for a single eatery. Great atmosphere to enjoy both good food and good conversation!
Blue Nile Cafe was a unique dining experience! Interesting atmosphere, & good food at a reasonable price. I
Loved the service, the atmosphere, and the food. For first time Ethiopian food goers, this place was perfect! We split the combination platter for 2 and ate until our bellies were bursting (Plus, had some to take home with us). It was amazing. I highly recommend!
Friendly and kind staff but the cuisine was not made for me.
Super tasty authentic Ethiopian food. Wonderful staff. Fantastic food!
First time. The lunch buffet was great. Lots of meat free options.
The food is incredible-- and healthy
I haven't been there
Super yummy lunch buffet! Love that most everything on the buffet is vegan and gluten free!
Food is bland and doesn’t taste authentic.
This place is AMAZING!! You walk in and can immediately smell the incredibleness you are about to devour. The service has always been out of this world and the food is always on point! Definitely my favorite place to come when I'm in KC. I always get the sample platter for two. PS, they have an all you can eat lunch buffet that kills every other all you can eat buffet in the country.
Love the lunch buffet. Super laid back atmosphere where you can feel right at home even if it's your first time. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to trying new dishes. Very affordable for the amount of food you get as well.
