This Coffee Shop corresponds to the category of German restaurant.
French onion soup was amazing. The sausage was good but a bit dry and overcooked. The service was terrible. We may have made a mistakes by choosing to sit in the bar area. About 7 employees were standing at the bar watching the Colts game while we were a mere 10 feet away wondering who it server was and if we could order. I was just very under impressed with a place that is such a staple in our city. Expected a little more professionalism. But again, maybe that is just the atmosphere in the bar and we should have chosen the dining room instead. Either way, have to go 3 stars for the experience.
Loved it our waitress was so funny and patient with us. We had never been there before. The food was excellent and you get a lot. All four of us in my family are picky eaters, we were all happy! I will be back.
So much fun, great food, great entertainment. I'll go back easily
Great beers & live music! There was a wedding in the events area when we visited. The staff is amazing!
Really delicious and plentiful authentic German food. Our favorites are the Schnitzel, Rouladen, Sauerbraten, potato pancakes, Mixed Wurst Platte, French onion soup, and amazing Apple Strudel, German Chocolate Cheesecake, and Sacher Torte. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the beef in the sauerbraten is sometimes tough and dry, but I don't mind too much because the delicious spice sauce is amazing. Service is also friendly and attentive! We visit often.
Wonderful customer service! Tasty food and beers! Great atmosphere!
Great food and service in a charming atmosphere. Large portion sizes. Many beers to choose from.
Excellent food and service.
I haven't found many places to get German food, let alone DELICIOUS German food. This place is amazing and a favorite of my family's. They serve warm pretzels to start off with a great horse radish mustard with a kick. Then there is a huge menu for whatever you fancy, apps, entrees, salads, soups and a huge lunch menu as well. My favorites include the schnitzel, sauerbraten, red cabbage, sour kraut, and potato salad.
Love the live music at the biergarten!
Iconic beer hall from Indianapolis with great food at fair prices in a historic structure. Lush, open beer garden with stage in back.
The Beir Garten is awesome!!!
Very nice venue and the wait staff was on point!
Delicious! Excellent food, friendly service, and a great atmosphere.
Loved this place. Excellent German food with sausages and krauts. Big and spacious with reception areas and live music.
I've been coming here for years. The food is excellent and so is the service. Live music in the beer garden is fun in the summer too.
Really enjoyed my dinner here. I got the 32 oz beer and shrimp scampi. And it’s not skimpy at all! Very delicious and filling. The service was great. A lot of help. The beer garden looks like it would be amazing during the summer and with performances. Great German food.
Ambience is worthy of a comfortable time, often fun times. However there is a lacking in "wait" seating, the decor in the main dining is gothic and eclectic in German memorabilia. I am only truly disappointed in their menu. Options are enormous for drinks/beer. The authenticity is lacking, pasta and burgers? I wanted to order some currywvurst, but to no avail. I think an update on their menu would help improve their appearance and authenticity.
Awesome place to listen to a band and hangout with friends. They also have great food
I love German food and Bier and really enjoyed this spot. I had the Jagersnizle and it was amazing
Just great. I come here once a year with a group of friends. We hang out in the biergarten and listen to live music. The beer selection is great, the food is very good. We've never eaten inside, so I can't speak to the full menu, but the Biergarten menu focused on appetizer style food is good. The atmosphere is perfect for this sort of venue. Some of my best memories from Indianapolis are from the Rathskeller.
I was hoping for much better. The food was mediocre as was the service. The beer selection was quite good however
My friend and I spent a couple of hours there on a Monday afternoon. Though we had long since stopped eating, we were continuously cared for. Beautiful place of history and warmth.
Amazing historic building. Authentic German food. Great beer selection.
Cool place to hangout and drink. Didn't try the food though.
Exceptional German food. Service is always great. We come all the way from Pittsburgh once a year to Indy and always stop at the Rathskeller. Very clean, very cool decor, great place all around.
5 Stars- I spent time in Germany. This is the only place that I can get imported Tap Beer like I had in Germany. The service is great. The staff remembers me 18 years later when I came home in 2001. This place is special. It is a place I find very healing. I am not a big drinker. 1 or 2 is it, but it is nice. Very nice. There is also many places to sit or stand. There is a ballroom, bar, restaurant, tables and sitting areas everywhere inside and out.
Gteat ambiance, food was delicious and friendly staff
Great place for lunch. The mustard is spicy!
Best place to drink and have a good time!! Classy and fun! Service is great and absolutely love the beer garden!
The appetizers were amazing and the overall taste of our food was actually very enjoyable. I wish i had an option to give some additional stars Fantastic service and food to die for. A great dining experience in Brooklyn. Highly recommended.
Great food and excellent service. The historic building is fun and has a nostalgic atmosphere.
The restaurant is nice but the food quality is inconsistent in my experience. Last time I was here my schnitzel was great and my brother didn't like his rouladen. This time my potatoes and schnitzel were extremely dry but my brother enjoyed his saurbraten. The beer selection is extremely good though.
I've lived in Germany & Austria for extended periods of time. I love German food...and this wasn't it :( The way it's listed on the menu, yes. How it came out to the table, no. I was really really sad, because I was so excited and husband was surprising me for our first anniversary. 1. Took forever to get our food. 2. Jägerschnitzerl was a hockey puck and the gravy tasted old??? I returned it and we were comped for it but nickeled and dimed for the sides I poked at :( 3. Overpriced for the quality. Just didn't feel like a lot of care went into the food or service. 2 stars not 1 because the atmosphere was nice and it's a lovely building.
I came here expecting a really great experience, with how famous and historic the restaurant is, but was a little underwhelmed. While the German beer selection (I got the flight) was outstanding, the Wurst sampler and the Schnitzel were a bit disappointing. The sausage was nothing special and the Schnitzel was room temperature when served. It’s a fun place with unique food for the area, but for the price, I can’t see myself going back.
Very busy drinking restaurant with live music in the outside area. I wish they had a few more vegetarian/vegan food options but the baked brie option was yummy. The menu doesn't have drink prices so bill is a bit of a mystery until you get it. I wouldn't make this a regular restaurant but fun for a one-off.
Band was excellent in the Biergarten!! Sandwich was good, french fries were burnt to a crisp, only 6 on my plate and not edible. Food was overpriced for what we had.
Great time! Great beer! Great price! And great views!
Good time at German fest 2019
One of my favorite spots in Indy, day or night. Enormous cups of German beer, live music in the garden, authentic Bavarian food. On Friday nights in the summer time, there's no better place to be.
Tasty food and good service.
A great place to enjoy some German cuisine. The spicy mustard is the best!
An Indy favorite! Way easier to get a reservation than it was about 10 years ago (to my pleasure)! If you want authentic German food, this is the place. If you like beer, this is the place. If you want to hear an awesome band in their beer garten, THIS IS THE PLACE.
We went here before watching the show at the Murat Theatre. It was really busy, but we had a reservation and went right in. There wasn't a lot of room and we had to kind of squeeze at our table. It took 5 minutes before our waiter finally came over to take our drink order. During that time other servers kept trying to bring us drinks that another table had ordered. We were concerned about time and ordered food that was already prepared. The food came out within 2 minutes and it tasted excellent. The bread was incredible. They also give you rolls and a soft pretzel. The salad had homemade dressing and reminded me of my childhood. Overall, I am quite happy with the experience. I just wish they would have given us a little more room to sit. On another note, the performance at the Murat was sub par, and this was the bright spot of our evening.
This is authentic German restaurant in a beautiful building. The portions are large and they bring warm pretzels with cheese and mustard to the table. The mustard is homemade and has a ton of horseradish. Its delicious but very spicy! This place is great for large parties and families. There's a lit of rooms and space. There's also an atrium with live music on various night.
We are in the bar section of The Rathskeller and it was great. The traditional German food was well cooked and delicious. Service was attentive and quick. If you are looking for an authentic German meal, this is your place in Indy. They offer a more pub style menu and a more formal dinner option. The Rathskeller also offers a ride range of German and domestic beers. After dinner you are in the middle of Massachusetts Ave and have plenty of pay dinner options.
The Athaeneum venue outside was awesome!
Best German food in Indy
Ate there today. Loved the place, food was excellent and staff very friendly! I will try to visit anytime I pass thru Indy now! Danke!
Great gathering, better food! We had a Diablo penne pasta with shrimp and it was wonderfully spicy and slightly cheesy to be just right. The Shiraz red wine was perfect and so was the Southwest cornbread appetizer with salsa spicy cheese and jalapenos. There was no room for all of it and boxes were needed. The desert card looked scrumptious but again did I mention no room? It was a great night at The Rathskeller and a band was playing in the main room for their annual dinner dance event which was quite nice.
We visited on a Saturday night. We’re seated at a table near the reception hall and on a busy path to the kitchen/bar. It felt like we were eating in an dance hall not a well reviewed restaurant. We asked to have the doors closed to the reception and were told the doors weren’t allowed to be closed. The food was ok but definitely not worth the price especially given we had to listen to the pounding music.
I've been three times. Never think it was worth the cost afterwards but usually think it sounds like a good idea when people mention going there as a option for dinner. Every time there are mistakes on our drink order and food. Groups of five or less. But the food is usually good, just never a great overall experience.
Great German food and beer
Awesome venue for a wedding. They have a huge private room (or two) and there is a great hall for live music and the outdoor biergarten looks like it would be a lot of fun. Try the Hefeweizen beer, it's the best.
Good entrees that are a little overpriced. Service was good. Seating can be a little cramped. I’m pretty skinny, but the back of my chair kept tapping the chair of the person behind me. Don’t bother with the rolls and pretzel. Not baked by Rathskeller and not all that special.
First time there..good food and friendly people..Truly appreciated the authenticity. Thank you for preserving this part in Indy..
Lovely place with a lot of character, food and waitstaff was excellent.
Probably the coolest German restaurant/Biergarten I've been to outside of Germany! Really a great surprise.
The service was excellent. The gravy tasted like flour. The German potatoes had way too much viniger. The sausage was excellent, the beer was very good.
Great music, delicious appetizers . A great place to hang out in the evening with friends and enjoy music and drinks!
I really liked the live music they had there. I had a sausage platter with my family and it was DELICIOUS! Keep up the good work!
I came here 1st time during the Devour Indy week and so decided to try order the 3 course meal from the special menu. My 3 course meal consisted of a salad , an entree (chicken Diane) and a dessert (rathskeller bread pudding). I liked each course of my meal. In particular I loved their desserts a lot. Amongst drinks, they have a wide collection of beers from different parts of the world. This is my new favorite place just because they have German beers and awesome desserts. Our server was very courteous and friendly. We asked her suggestions for drinks and she surprised us. Overall an evening spent wonderfully. :) Would definitely recommend others to visit.
Great food and beer selection. Wonderful atmosphere. Staff is very nice and helpful.
Fantastic German food and a great atmosphere!
One of the places I visit while I have friends visiting town. It’s a cool German Restaurant located at the Mass Ave. area of Indianapolis. The atmosphere resembles a old style German Pub. The food and drinks selection are good. Service was OK and food is decently priced. Pretzels and spicy mustard are a must try!
Very good. Had a service from what I think was the owner Wayne. The pretzel was on point. Good food and beer.
Great venue for a great up and coming singer! If anyone gets the chance to see Alexandria Kay in person or online it well worth your time! She puts on a amazing show!
Awesome band....good times!
Excellent German fare. Best homemade blue cheese dressing that I've ever had.
Really disappointing. Beautiful building (exterior) overshadowed by bland food, small portions, and cheap "ambiance.". I had high hopes for an authentic experience but these kind of priceses for frozen section-quality food means we won't be back. When you the too-small portions of the Reuben (which was mostly sauerkraut and very little corned beef) or the cheesecake are sent away unfinished, something is probably not right.
Great food, and great beer. I highly recommend a flight and the shnitzel sampler!
The Biergarten is amazing! Spacious, lo Ely stage, 3 bars. Great for a nice evening outside.
Great place for a show. Service was good. Only problem was that I got charged $2.75 for a very small glass of diet Coke. Otherwise I would have gave it 5 stars.
We ate a great dinner there & then went 2 the beirgarden 4 great music . Had a blast .
Such a wonderful place. The building is huge and has a really unique layout. The sauerbraten had a glaze with an apple taste I didn't care for but it was still very good.
We were here for a wedding rehearsal dinner and it was perfect!!! Family style!! The food is good and huge garden outback with live band!
The sausages and kraut were worth it on their own, let alone the tons of other German food. And the beer... Oh my the beer...
Great atmosphere with great service! The food was excellent and the Bread Pudding was divine! Absolutely recommend this place.
Great beer, great food, awesome entertainment.
This place is great! Staff was friendly and helpful, and the mustard was excellent! Highly recommended
Tasty food and good service
We always enjoy coming to the Rathskeller in Indianapolis. We have been to the original in Munich, both restaurants are amazing. It has great authentic German food and is has very filling portions. I would recommend sharing a meal with someone for dinner. There is enough for two. I will definitely be back many, many times.
Very good German food and beer. They bring hot pretzels like bread. Highly recommend.
Excellent selection of beer and outstanding food! Service received was just as good as the food.
Great food! We love having a restaurant in town with authentic German cuisine.
Always great food and awesome beer garden!
Great cocktails and music. The bartender was very friendly and helped us decide what we wanted to drink. I would definitely go again!
I had recently been to Germany and loved it. And so for my birthday my family took me out to this place, knowing how much I had loved the food and beer. I have to say, this place really was a great find. From the increadibly fun waitress who had kept my family laughing, to the amazing food, it was a great trip and one I hope to make again soon.
This place never lets us down & always delivers quality! Their kraut & schnitzel are some of the best. Plus, the building itself is pretty neat & full of history.
Randy, our server was great. He made us feel right at home. The food was delicious & the atmosphere was very unique. So much history behind this restaurant. We had a good time.
Great venue. Great beer and German food. Don't try the weird pastas.
The food was authentic and the outdoor beer garden was absolutely wonderful
Advertised on multiple online kid friendly lists. Except kids arent allowed in the outdoor beer garden. Must be some sort of Indiana law... Enjoy a meal with your children in the interior quiet dining room!
Great food, great atmosphere and fair pricing. I was pleasantly surprised.
If you ever have a chance to go, GO. Great food, beautiful old world architecture. And then there's the beer, no sorry, Beir Garden. Probably one of the best outdoor places in Indy.
Excellent food and service! An Indianapolis institution!
It's a must see in Indy. Lots of great food, ambience, and drinks. Great outdoor spaces also. Take in a band while you're there.
Really good oxtail soup and decent wurst. Wish they have more beer options. Extremely friendly staff!!!
Great place to socialize, host events
Nice venue for music. Beautiful historic building.
Genuine Place.Great Food Great Beer Garden.Feels almost like back in Germany
Authentic German food. Lunch menu is the best bet .... dinner doubles the price!
Busy restaurant with very good staff. I was a little underwhelmed by the food but the beer selection is impressive. Kind of a 70's throwback.
Always an amazing time here! Love the beer garden! Even better with Clayton Anderson playing in concert!
The Rathskeller is a historic large building in Indy that's used for a variety of purposes. There's a YMCA inside as well as a restaurant/bar, coffee shop, galleries, and event spaces. I came here for a wedding. The space is definitely old, but beautiful with stain glass windows and wood work. The wedding itself was in a room with the reception below in the restaurant. The food served from the restaurant at the wedding was actually really bad- worst wedding food I've had, but the space was decent at least!
Never disappoints! Great food & excellent beer selection.
You certainly get what you pay for here! Fantastic food and atmosphere.
Great people make this place what it is.. food, bevarages, views, live talent.. dont miss out
Very eclectic restaurant with multiple floors. Great ambience, very quiet, and interesting architecture.
Good variety, we just had to wait 20 mins to get a server to notice my party of 7.
Took my family here for father's day and had an amazing time! Food, drinks, and service were unbeatable! Highly recommend and will definitely be returning!
Amazing that a place like this exists in Indy, and with a beer garden as well!
New Years celebration was better than expected. It had a buffet with more than enough good food, great music with an older crowd that kept the dance floor full. Great event!
Had a wonderful dinner with my good friend. Portion s are big enough that I was able to bring home my leftovers for my husband to have for dinner tonight!
Great german beer food is ok
Everything was amazing! Pretzels with hot mustard to start. Rueben and Brat sandwiches with french fries and then apple struedel and black forest cake for dessert. Delightful!!!
Best beer garden in Indy. Historic German club building with authentic German menu.
I go here every year for my birthday. The beer selection is amazing featuring more than just German and American beers.
Good place for a corporate event or party. Interesting architecture. Good German food. Not the best I've ever had, but mostly good.
Excellent food with a great atmosphere
Food is incredible every single time.
Not to bad. A little pricey for what you get.
Perhaps the best German food I've had since childhood. Growing up in Ct my family presided over a German American Club. The food there was just like Rathskeller. Decor is right out of the 40 50 era's. Several bathrooms, ballrooms, indoor dining and dancing ,beirgarten. I Loved it
The starter bread basket comes with the best mustard in town. Authentic German dishes and sides like none other served in the city, served in a romantic dining room, by sweet experienced staff. I pleasantly full and going home happy with a couple more meals from my leftovers.
They have cigars at the bar and velveeta cheese for breadsticks. Beer is good too. Bathrooms in a weird place and vaguely marked.
Great! A must visit. Good variety of beers. Staff knows their brews well. Have them suggest a beer for you. Can't go wrong.
Service was great. Stuffed Mushrooms were yummy. Orange Roughy was just okay.
Thoroughly enjoyed my meal here. Schnitzel was one of the best I ever had. Love German beer and served cold in a BIG mug is the way to go. Would have liked a larger draft beer selection but the options were good. Same with the food. Only a small portion was German but what they do have is good.
Food is great and fairly priced, and service was good. Great indoor and outdoor venues for live music!
Great beer! Love the atmosphere of the biergarten
Wait staff not on to of their game tonight. Very distracted. Food was good...nothing outstanding.
Great German food. Great service.
The food was fantastic and the service was amazing. Would definitely recommend. It was very busy so do you expect a wait at times.
Very cool german resturant with excellent food, whole family enjoyed including 4 year old, had lots of great options
When in Indy, my wife and I always drop by here with a friend. We prefer to dine in the bar area, where it's more casual than the restaurant's dining room area. Plus our favorite waitress (Jen) generally works the bar section! The pretzel app, the schnitzel, and various other German specialties are a must have here! We love the (warm style) German potato salad which comes as a side with entrees, and the other sides are pretty good also! As for drinks, they have a large German draft beer selection, as well as a full bar to satisfy your thirst.
We went to the polka boys tonight, it was insanely packed but it was also the first concert at The Rathskeller of the year. The restaurant part is great, but tonight they couldve done a much much much better job of regulating the crowd. Everyone standing on picnic tables blocking the view and zero pathways to walk making people shove one another. I didn't see one employee helping, or anyone doing any sort of security or anything. Other than that the food is great and the atmosphere is obviously amazing for the concert, just logistically they are pretty bad.
Delicious German eats and a variety of German beers to include a few dunkels served here! We enjoyed the large pretzels and sourkraut balls.
Great German and western European food. The wurst platte is always great, service is usually solid. The large biergarten is great when weather is warm.
very expensive very fancy inside very good meat in the overall a very satisfying experience
Great meal and service!
Insanely good food, the bar is unique and beautiful, and the spicy mustard simply can't be beat!
Tuna, Potato Cake, and Carrots! The appetizers were delicious, the mains were amazing! Definitely will have to visit again!
Great band that night, delicious food, and awesome beer.
Great place to see live bands or just get a beer and hangout with friends. They usually have a cover when there is a band though, but accept card and cash
Great atmosphere, friendly staffs. Prost!
The prices here are so over priced! Our waitress was so rude and so was the person at the front. She was wearing a blue dress shirt with Van's leggings? We waiting 2 hours for our food after we ordered. And the waitress was so slow getting drinks or anything else we needed. There was barely anyone there so I dont understand why it took so long. The worst service we ever have. The food was not worth the price. I would not recommend this place to anyone ever.
While this is not an inexpensive restaurant, the food is excellent. There is a strong and authentic German influence, which is a genuine reflection of the restaurant and building's history. I would thoroughly recommend the Rathskeller if you're looking for good food, excellent beverages, with an unhurried and relaxed environment.
This was my first time. I love love bartender Dewayne & the food awesome I will bring my family back every day if I could
Authentic German food, nice outdoor seating. Even had a band on a Sunday afternoon.
Food on Back Patio was very good...Then the music started. The Toasters, Terrible Sound, Way to Many People allowed in area, couldn't even move. I suppose if you just want to get drunk and smell other people it was ok, not for me.
We are getting married here, so this is a wedding planning and event review: amazing. The ambiance is legendary, as is the food and beer. We mostly work with Brooke, and sometimes Paige, and they are professional, fun, easy to talk with, eager, and know their stuff. Price is good, but you know, weddings...but everyone is excited for wurst, pretzels, and more! The food is killer, the space excellent, the history sublime, and you even get coat check coffee! A fantastic event location with a fan staff that make every visit exceptional.
First off, I'm 39 and lived in Germany for about 30 years. Just moved back to the US in 2015. The only thing German about this place is the labels on the beer. The menu is half German and not in translated German language Not one German staff member And the food... terrible. I ordered a Schnitzel Jaeger style...it was terrible. But I guess that's what you get when the main focus of the company is to host events just because of the "German" name. If you operate a German restaurant, get some German cooks! and one or two servers... Never again and I don't recommend...!
Had a great time! Service was outstanding and the food was delicious. I ended up going there Friday night and Saturday afternoon. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique experience in Indianapolis.
It was great food I recommend paying the 9.50 plate share you get 2 sides and a salad. It was a lot of food for one person.
The food and service was excellent! The accommodated or entire family of 6 on St. Patrick's day with no reservations. They also gave us a quiet spot top enjoy drinks and dinner.
Best beer garden in Indy!
Good German food and beer selection. The Biergarden is a great place to hang with friends. Highly recommended.
Excellent beer, amazing food, and super helpful service. This is the restaurant that has been the most flexible and helpful with navigating my unusual dietary needs - I wasn't expecting it, and they really went above and beyond to make sure I had a great dining experience. We're definitely coming back, and bringing friends!
