Went here for a meeting. Nice atmosphere and friendly helpful staff. I was that person that asked for a recommendation and they were happy to help. They recommended the mocha and gingersnap iced coffee for it's sweet and savory taste. It didn't disappoint.
Great atmosphere and selection of coffee!
Not only was the coffee as good as you know it's going to be, but the atmosphere is exactly what you want a coffee bar to feel like. There was a patio to enjoy the beautiful weather, ample space as the bar, and tables for people to spread out or gather around and enjoy the many tasty options. It was my first time there, and the staff were helpful in guiding me through their expansive menu. They had plenty of merch and whole beans for sale, and they roast their beans right around the corner @ The Mothership. My only regret is not trying one of their nitro cold brews!
Love dark matter. This coffee shop is in an old bar. A few places to charge your phone, WiFi, and full of art.
Always friendly, always yummy!
Friendly staff and delicious coffee!
One of my favorite coffee bars and roaster in Chicago.
What can you say, it really is the best in Chicago. Unlimited refills on top notch stuff. Hard to compete. The beans are pretty damn expensive but if you are looking for a cup it doesn't get better in Chicago.
Great drinks and helpful and friendly staff. Great place to chill or work. Love this place.
Came here to try and do some work but had a hard finding a seat & table though. The bar takes up a lot of space and I was hoping to get some work done so needed a table and wifi. Had trouble with the wifi too it wasnt very strong. Staff was really nice and the outdoor patio space was rad. Picnic tables and graffiti, pretty cool. Just too much sun for my laptop so I had to find another coffee shop to work at. Cool place though, maybe not the best to hang around and do work.
Great donuts, the coffee quality varies, and great service! Also, a really nice space (upstairs, downstairs, and outdoors) to do various things (study, meet, grab a quick coffee, etc...)
Great coffee shop to try in this area!
Great cold brew and outdoor seating. Cozy. Just wish they have nitro cold brew.
Best coffee. I also enjoy the lounge. It's very chill and an awesome spot to study and do some homework.
Great coffee and helpful staff
Awesome coffee place! Very cool atmosphere. I can just go there and get a bunch of work done(free WiFi). The coffee is amazing, I usually get the regular mocha. They also have a spicy cinnamon mocha which is pretty bomb as well. It is 5 bucks per cup which can get pricy if you go every day but they are nice and will re fill it with coffee for free to-go. I also use their printing service in case I need to sign and scan a document for work or whatever.
- nice little coffee dive . Dark Matter !
The chocolate coffee!!! Enough said.
Great coffee and atmosphere. Excellent attention to detail. Perhaps my favourite coffee shop.
More than blow-your-mind, locally roasted coffee made by true artisans who maintain first name relationships with their farmers all over the world, Dark Matter is a cultural hub for the neighborhood. People here truly care about and each other. They also have SUPER cool art exhibits up on a monthly rotation. It's provided my house with more than a few fantastic pieces. Oh, and did I mention the coffee is amazing? Take it from a life long coffee addict- this is the best I've seen yet. Especially their Unicorn Blood espresso. Just. Yum. So good.
Now that's WHAT'S needed in humbolt PK. Great coffee excellent service. Most of all welcoming atmosphere.
I always feel I'm part of the family! Hands down my favorite coffee shop ever!
Homey, with good coffee. Has a neat outside lounge in the back
My favorite coffee in Chicago. They're always experimenting with new blends and the staff is incredibly friendly. I would recommend any of the drinks - they cater to people who love a nice sweet and delicious drink, but also those who love to add a little spice. Great for weekend hangouts to just chat over a cup of coffee. Back area is great in the summer. Coffee aside, they have great pastrami sandwiches.
This is my favorite coffee shop in Chicago. I have a few other places I enjoy, but the coffee at Star Lounge, the space, and the atmosphere here are my favorite. The upstairs is quiet and great for reading or study, while the first floor is bumping and great for conversation. The coffee has great flavor and their pastry items are great as well.
Amazing coffee, great service, awesome space deco and music. Totally love it!
Had the best cappuccino of my life. No sugar for the first time. Super nice staff and beyond charming ambiance.
LOVE this place. Nutella croissant is delicious, and coffee is great. I wish there were more tables, we had to grab chairs at the bar which didn't leave much leg room. I also love it when coffee shops have self-serve water set up so I don't have to constantly bother the waitstaff for water :) Everyone was super nice, we will definitely be back
Coffee is mostly dark roasted, and their special cinnamon coffee is great! The environment is very comfortable, except that the first floor bathroom is kinda smelly due to a too small fan.
You walk in and it looks like a bar, only they serve coffee. The locally roasted coffee is excellent, with a wide variety of noticeably different types. I haven't tried the food, but during the summer they have a tap running ice coffee. Best summertime coffee beverage is the iced mocha. Tastes like marshmellows, chocolate, and coffee. Delicious.
Good coffee. I still prefer light roasts
Beer + coffee here! Wi-Fi
Chocolate City iced coffee on tap, DELICIOUS !!
My favorite place for coffee in Chicago. There are tables if you need to work or study and bar seats if you want to hang with friends or meet some of the interesting folk who frequent the place. Highly recommended.
Perfect place to hang out with friends or alone to do some work. Plenty of space and seating inside and outside. Baristas are friendly and know what they're doing. Clean overall, but bathrooms could be cleaner. Dark Matter coffee is my fave so of course it's going to be good.
Great service in here all the time. I didn't enjoy the coffee or latte that much. But the drinks mainly the greyhound is awesome. The fresh grapefruit juice makes the difference and I've asked other places but they don't have fresh squeezed juice. Great atmosphere with a laid back vibe. I wish they played different music at times but overall a great place to hang and drink. Good happy hour prices! Star Lounge Coffee Bar (Dark Matter Coffee)
Always love at the Star Lounge! There are a plethora of coffee roasters and coffee shops in Chicago, but Dark Matter Coffee is by far my favorite. They have a few locations, all unique in their own special quirky way, but Star Lounge is my favorite. Always the best vibe going on in there! Great music, super awesome staff and plenty of seating, including great outdoor patio out back. My 8 and 11 year old often tag along with me and I never get evil eye-rolls from staff or patrons! They are my go-to, year round and they also have the best hours of operation!
Dark Matter Coffee shops will always be my favorite, especially the Star Lounge location. I take any visitors from out of town here so they can experience the amazing crafted beverages (not to mention the great drip brew). The staff is super friendly and accommodating, and the pastries are awesome (including great vegan options). The outside seating area is nice and sunny most days, and the atmosphere isn't too loud.
Perfect neighborhood bar less than a block away from the Lake. Not sure what took me so long to test it out but I'll definitely find my way back soon to test out the lovely sectionals in the back of the bar. Star Lounge Coffee Bar (Dark Matter Coffee)
A coffee bar- literally. You can sit at the bar and catch yourself drinking delicious coffee in the long mirrors. Great vibe. The specialty drinks are amazing too.
Very authentic and delicious. Strong coffee, cool art oozing from the walls.
Obnoxious loud rap, impossible to study. I know it's not a library, but music should be background music like it is in osmium coffee on Belmont. Great coffee though.
So far so good. The coffee selection was intriguing. The barrel aged coffee was a new concept that you had to grew a taste for it, but is was nice even when dranked it cold after 5 hours. The employees were very friendly and helpful.
Come for the coffee, stay for the mutts on the porch. Great outdoor area
A friendly atmosphere with both quiet and social areas available. The blueberry rooibos tea smells like blueberries. Their crescents are massive. Every month they will circulate art pieces. Overall, an incredible space.
Coffee is great. The space is very nice - like what they did the place.
This has recently become my go-to coffee shop in the area. Nothing pretentious to be found here. Real good coffee, nice people, great space inside, outside or upstairs. A few snacks can be found in the small pastry window, and I rarely need to put on headphones to drone out the house music selection from the baristas.
My capuccino was delicious! Very well made by Andrew, muffin was ok, ham and cheese Dan was also very good
Great atmosphere. The baristas are always on top of their game, and the coffee is the best in the city. Also the tunes in this place are on-point.
Awesome coffee shop. Ground level is good place to hangout and be social. Upstairs is a good place to work/study. Coffee and snacks are pretty good and cheaper than some of the other coffee shops around. Staff is friendly and service is fast. I recommend it.
Best chai tea latte I have ever had. It's spicy and creamy and the perfect temperature. Highly recommend. Also, the vegan chocolate muffin (no I'm not vegan) is exquisite. Great atmosphere, but the staff are slightly unapproachable. Still coming back.
I love this coffee shop because despite how trendy it is, and has been. The workers are never pretentious. I just wish they could keep the bathrooms cleaner. The coffee and food are all excellent. They roast their own coffee with care, and the proof is in the cup.
Awesome atmosphere to chill and/or study. Lots of shade outdoors and a solid upstairs room for quiet work... I still have yet to try their coffee and food
Great place for local coffee! Laid back and relaxing atmosphere! 1st time I had Dark matter coffee, now I am hooked!
Amazing place, great coffee, wonderful art, and Do-Rite doughnuts... What's not to love?
Great Coffee! Be sure to stop and get some if your in the Chicago area
Great coffee, funky ex-bar ambience, wacky staff. A great place to get your Java fix, meet with friends, or get some work done (if you like music!).
Flagship cafe for Dark Matter roastery...so the coffee is incredible. Cool hip vibe, good music (though a bit loud), but the upstairs coworking space is quiet and bright. This is one of my favorite cafes.
They serve Dark Matter coffee and have Wi-Fi. What else do you need. Oh you need a flannel or sick t shirt? They got merch too. Lots of great art work and a lively crew of baristas. It's a great group of people making great coffee and snacks.
Pretty damn good coffee, print center, and WiFi. Pastries are decent, but the good stuff goes fast. Has plenty of seating inside, outside, upstairs and downstairs. I suggest the barrel aged machete espresso cold. Reminds me of a dark beer.
Pastry's good, the atmosphere is too, and I'm sure the terrace and the patio are really enjoyable on sunny days. But I got a ristretto after ordering a double espresso, which is a little bit sad in a place pretending to be specialized in coffee.
If you're a tea drinker, this is a good place to meet up for coffee. They give you a little teapot that has almost 3 cups in it and it's super cheap!
Fast service without a rushed feeling. I drive 30 miles from the sw burbs to pick up what's new.
The antithesis to the normal coffee shop, Dark Matter has louder music and a more rustic interior. However, their seating is absolutely amazing. If you need some quiet time, go upstairs where it is still just as cool looking. Of course, this is Dark Matter so their coffee is amazing. I always recommend trying one of their crazy beers on tap.
amazing staff, friendly, and the coffee is an addiction I've come to terms with.
Best iced latte I've ever had.
Good coffee/service
Strong coffee, cool art oozing from the walls, free refills (be careful). There’s a great patio. Wifi could be a little faster though.
Fantastic! Great coffee, staff, owner. Friendly to groups (spent a few hours each of 2 days meeting there as a 10 person photography group).
Great coffee! Serious, focused customers all working hard. No conversation, just individual focused folks
Great coffee shop
Outdoor seating is great. I loved the baked goods. The brewed coffee is always really bitter but the americanos are tolerable.
Try the barrel aged coffee
They have to figure out a way to get people that want a shot of espresso in a coffee without a 20 minute wait since we're not waiting for a frothy latte drink....
The best soy milk latte ever
Coffee was ok, my biggest problem was with the upstairs dining room. It smelled sweaty up there. For a while I thought it was another customer causing it, but then he left and it lingered. If you go, definitely stay downstairs, which can be hard because everyone works there and won't leave their seat for multiple hours.
I went to Star Lounge after receiving a tour of their coffee brewery just down the street. During that tour I was able to try lots of different ways these guys make their coffee and as a casual coffee drinker I liked them all. These guys really know their stuff. WARNING: Hipsters everywhere. Also really good coffee
5/5 for ambiance and 5/5 for coffee This is totally rad place to get your caffeine fix. Fun Fact: if you buy a bag of coffee beans, you get a free cup of coffee.
Great place to check out
Why are you reading this review? Can't you already tell that this place is worth the acclaim that hundreds of regular people have bothered to give it? Just come here and try a regular drip black coffee. You'll never go to Starbucks again.
Unicorn blend is really good
Fantastic quality. Innovative products. Get the cask cured canned coffee. And the chocolate croissant!
Love it here. I love that you can bring you dog inside. Also the staff were super helpful and friendly. I will be coming back here next time I come to Chicago.
I'm embarrassed to say that I had never been or heard of Star Lounge! It's now one of my favorite coffee shops. There is a long bar to sit at and get refills. There are several tables with outlets. And there is an outdoor area in the back! It's not too quiet, so this is not the place to go for calls or serious, reflective work. But anything else - this is the spot. Dark Matter coffee is delicious, too.
Bourbon barrel aged nitro coffee was dope !
Awesome event in the summer!
Great casual spot to get caffeinated, get work done or just hang out and appreciate the awesome back patio.
Love this place!
Really enjoyable. Wish we could get a pour over on the weekends in the morning but we understand since it's so busy
Supurb espresso! The perfect place for me to focus and work, especially early in the morning.
The Barrel Aged Mocha is insanely good! This might be the best coffee I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
OK let's get this straight. Nobody makes a better cappuccino! The thing I love about this place is THE STAFF! They are super sweet super helpful and seem to love their job and love what they do. In the world of coffee can be really pretentious and the people could be really nasty but they're not. Everyone of these dark matters coffee shops I go into the people working there are lovely. Get the large cappuccino for there and it comes in two servings. It's like two drinks for the price of one!
Perfect coffee
My top 3 coffee shop in chitown, specialty coffee is a must try and nice backyard sitting area
Excellent coffee, but some of the worst music selection I’ve ever heard at a coffee shop. Maybe because it was night, but definitely not conducive to working or studying. I’m pretty sure the employees just blast a really obnoxious playlist when they want to clear everyone out - pretty lame tbh.
Nice spot good coffee. Walk all the way in and you order towards the back on the left. They have drink menus back there, don't bother looking at the wall for information. There's a back patio. There's Wi-Fi but the password is pretty non obvious between two other chalkboards. The interior is cute and has a nice busy quality; the interior is also not easy to navigate and I found it to make me a bit anxious.
My absolute favorite coffee shop in the city. It doesn’t try too hard. No clean aesthetic with marble countertops or refurbished wooden tables and Edison lightbulbs. It wants to be a neighborhood shop so it’s grungy. The art is curious and obscure. The music taste is indie-metal-rock. Star Lounge is a true Chicago neighborhood local spot. Upstairs is quiet and perfect for intense studying and emailing. Downstairs is lively. And the patio is perfect on a sunny day, filled with puppy dogs often and cycling hipsters drinking their americanos.
Great coffee and service. Thanks!
Not a coffee shop kinda guy but this place was pretty awesome to catch-up with a friend. Plus the coffee is amazing!
Great spot, great coffee, same as Easy on Netflix
Best coffee shop in Chicago! The staff is super friendly, great spot with cool art work, and most importantly... The drinks are delicious and reasonably priced.
Visiting Chicago for the first time, I had vaguely heard of Dark Matter coffee before. The Star Lounge is one of my favorite coffee shops I've ever visited - the vibe is great, the store is wonderfully decorated, and the coffee is rock solid! This location inspired me to go to all other Dark Matter spots - while the rest are all good, this place takes the cake!
Was the best latte I have ever had
Great drip coffee with refills in-store, prefer to work in the quiet upstairs (when there are seats available- sometimes the whole place gets too busy)
Did you know that if you buy coffee beans you get a free cup of coffee? That took me by surprise! The cafe is surprising for first time goers with it's retro vibe and decor. The baristas know their craft and how to serve a customer with friendliness.
In the sea of brand name coffee house, outs nice to see a place that is different and unusual. Great coffee and cool atmosphere.
Great outdoor seating. Tasty coffee.
What a great coffee lounge! When I first moved to Chicago I was without internet for about a week. Since I work from home, I needed a place I could sit and get some work done. I headed over to Star Lounge and it was so good! The ambiance, noise level, and delicious coffee make for a really great work space. It also seems like a great place to just grab a coffee with a friend. I will definitely be heading back!
Possibly my favorite coffee shop. Housed in a former bar (and still using the bar), Star Lounge has some of the best coffee in town without the snobbery. The staff is happy to walk you through their beans, roasting process, and different brewing options without talking down to customers. The selection of pastries and snacks can be limited depending on day and time, and there is really limited seating for more than two people. (They do have overflow seating upstairs.)
This is my neighborhood coffee shop and I absolutely love it. The service is great, the back patio is lovely, and the coffee is amazing!
Amazing Simple and very savory. Very authentic and delicious. Quick and filling. Loving everything. About this place. Good for breakfasts lunch or dinner Super nice staff. I want them to open a spot in California As a Cuban I vouch for the authenticity
The coffee is good. I like places with more than just pastries so that didn't work for me. Nice patio.
A hidden gem that was a fun experience! Pick up coffee and get some fresh air walking over to their lounge that felt very roomy and cozy. Employees were super nice and welcoming! They offer a good variety of coffee, pastries and merchandise (Pistachio donut 5/5) Overall a great destination for a mini adventure in the heart of Chicago.
Oh my gosh this place was so good. It was right by our hotel which was nice. The service was amazing, even on a super busy Sunday morning. We enjoyed the grits, the eggs, the bacon etc...everything we had was delicious! Give this place a try.
Great place to get work done. Cool and fun ambiance! Need to come back to try more items on the menu and get more work done!
The best aspect of this space is the outdoor area in the back, which features some vibrantly colored artwork. Indoors however, one of the staff members was talking at a volume that was more appropriate for one of the guys selling $9 beers at a Cubs game. The iced coffee was too acidic and disappointing, as I've always had good experiences with Dark Matter coffee. Baked goods could be better too.
Super friendly, and superb coffee and pastries.
Love that these guys have embroidered patches for purchase. The coffee is pretty great too!
Coffee is delicious and the croissants and other items available for noshing are Exquisite. Must go
Like Osmium, they have a great patio in back and a coffee bar with some separate seating inside. It's the best coffee in Chicago in a fun environment.
Good coffee, I didn't feel welcomed here.
Great place to work remotely/study. Lots of seating, much of it with outlets. The coffee is awesome, and the outdoor patio seals the deal. The music is very much my taste, so there is really no reason to give anything less than 5 stars. Queue the gong...
Incredibly bold coffee in a classy bar setting. What more could you ask for? A warm interior and playlists that make you want to leave your headphones off. And, to top it off, the service was delightful!
As usual, I got an Americano and it was really good. Probably one of the best I've had. The space is very cool and assuming it isn't torrentially down pouring like it was today, you can sit on the back patio.
Dark matter coffee in a classic hipster shop. Great art, and don't miss the goat cheese croissant.
Great little coffee shop. They started as a small roaster, so they always have really fresh coffee. Their blends are some of the best in the city. They make a really good Mayan Mocha with cayenne and chocolate. The space is kind of small and it can get busy, with a line of 5 or 6 people sometimes. It's still worth it for the coffee.
This place is pretty cool. The decor is really nice, hipster type place, the coffee is good and the donut we had was amazing (glazed with chocolate glaze), one of the best donuts I've ever had. There is inside and outside seating and it is dog friendly. The only downside, and this is a reoccurring comment from my trip to Chicago, the service was a little slow for me but I work in NYC so I'm used to things moving at a faster pace.
Excellent coffee and good pastry. Nice decor.
The baristas are weird but kinda cool and the coffee ain't half bad. I'd smack...
Great coffee selection, great bagels and friendly staff. Sit at the bar and enjoy free Wi-Fi.
Welcome home fellow travelers. From the folks that brought you Unicorn Blood, here's Star Lounge. You can enjoy a delicious cup of iced brew on tap or pour over as you connect to the universe. Wait, I gotta go, my Rachtachino is ready.
They are good, or they have been pretty much every time I drop in (a couple times a year). My standards for coffee are preposterously high, so I'm probably not a fair judge, BUT they are absolutely one of the top five espressos in Chicago.
First off, one of my favorite places to go for the coffee itself. Also a super dope setup, nice artsy environment. I don't consume alcohol, but this place makes me feel a little more included in the "bar scene" without the ridicule of not partaking in the toxic beverages, coffee gets me high enough. If you like caffine, art and a huge variety of personality types, this is the spot. It has a pretty spacious patio area when weather permits, which also caters to both smokers and non smokers, I like the balance. Smokers have been shunned, but drinking has been promoted like it's medicine. Pardon my rant, all I'm really trying to say is that this is an awesome hangout, go there. Now. And all the time.
Too crowded to sit, coffee is fresh and good but tasted a little salty
good coffee, interesting music, great atmosphere
Great place to chill and get great coffee (sometimes good and sometimes bad coffee) . Sadly the coffee / latte quality varies with each barista.
Wow Oh. My. WOW. Mayan Mocha. Absolutely delicious!!! The vibes and energy of the place is warming and welcoming, personally I enjoy the artsy feel. I get a "Fear the Loathing", vibe from some of the art work. They have a beautiful outside seating area too. The coffee has a beautiful aroma, taste, and me-oh-mighty-Boldness. The staff was as helpful as can be considering how busy it was around 9. They have dairy alternatives too; Almond or Soy¿
Every experience is a memorable one. The coffee is the best i’ve ever had and the space is perfect for either a place to just chill or study. I loved learning about the pop-up shops they did in Japan. Everytime I come in i have to resist buying the artwork. The most amazing people work here. Whether you’re in Chicago to visit or living here this is a perfect place to go.
Seemed legit. I don't drink coffee. Was there for a meeting with a friend. Had a bottle Coke. Cool artwork in the back.
Great patio. Great coffee. Try the cold brew on tap.
Great stop. Stayed on the area and decided to stop in to get a cup of tea. Fantastic tea. Very nice staff. Tea was hot very hot and they double cupped it for me. Highly recommend the coffee smelled amazing.
I had very great experience visiting this coffee shop arriving to Chicago before checking into my hotel in early spring, it was very clean and quiet very nice friendly barista I had tea and a scone pastry...Was absolutely delightful! Will be back next time visiting Chicago for leisure time❤❤❤❤
Love the Mayan Mocha!
Solid music and drink options. Great place to get work done. Awesome outdoor space to hang with friends.
Typically great coffee and vibe, they just need to reign in the guys that play death metal all the time now.
Love it! Now typically I visit places on the south side or the burbs and dont find myself on the Northside, but I must say it makes me jealous of all they have going on up there. Made a special trip just to go to this place and loved it. The ladies serving us were great, friendly and explained the coffee to us. Delicious btw and a wonderful experience. Blows away any more famous chains you have heard of. I'd love to go back♡
Star Lounge not only served the best coffee (Dark Matter Coffee), but also have a great, knowledgeable staff. The patio is dog friendly and there is always a dog to pet while you get your work done or simply spend the morning with a good friend and great cup of coffee.
I love Dark Matter.
