Really really neat spot for coffee. The decor, the staff, the drink menu and coffees...super funky and dark. However, no seating inside. You can get a great cup of coffee or buy a bag of beans, they also sell some coffee accessories like cups and brewers. We could smell them roasting coffee down the street. I would definitely describe the coffee as fresh and strong. Worth checking out!

Amazing coffee made by a highly skilled staff. The team is friendly but knows how to move a line out the door through this place quickly. I've rarely waited more than 5 minutes for an espresso even when packed. This is not a sit down place, more of a quick grab and go spot. For a hangout spot, see their sister location - star lounge, around the corner.

First let me say that the coffee is beyond belief at dark matter. The different roasts they have as well as the in house drinks made to order those are definitely worth the trip. They will definitely deliver a flavorful and balanced beverage to you. They also feature sweet treats and pastries to enjoy with your cold or hot beverage. The reason that I'm giving it one star today is because almost all of the employees Have a smile on their face and even when it's super busy on a Sunday morning they manage to find the energy to keep it moving but to to be pleasant and positive as they help you start your day. However I have been in multiple times in the last few months and there is one employee who seems to be angry or bothered. doesn't matter whether this person is making the coffee or taking the money I used to think it was because they were quiet. but now several times I have witnessed this employee be pleasant even bubbly with many other customers but when I try to engage and ask how they're doing they act as if they don't hear me I'm not certain why this is but as a result I will no longer be going to dark matter at all I don't have the time to Dodge or worried about which employees working it's a sad decision but I want to be able to stop in and get my beverage and be on my way with a pleasant vibe.

Best coffee in Chicago, this is the main toaster where I believe they do coffee classes and such, but there is really only places to sit outside. The star lounge bar just around the corner has much more seating if you plan to hangout for a bit

It truly is the best tasting coffee. Black coffee is the only way I drink it and if you do as well give it a try. I like that it is not a place you can hang out or catch a bite bc they do not make food. That is a good sign....strictly focusing on coffee.

This place makes absolutely great coffee! I am a connoisseur of Ameicanos, I think it's just the best way to experience great coffee. And this place made a perfect one. It feels really cozy and inviting, and the staff was like full-hipster, without making you feel like you're not part of the action too. Yesterday was our first visit here. My husband purchased a bag of coffee & we both ordered 2 cups of coffee. My husband order was ready quickly and mine was not. I didn’t want to be rude so I waited patiently. When I inquired about my coffee they were not aware of my order & the barista apologized. He then gave me a hole punch card for a FREE cup of whatever coffee I wanted on my next visit. Now that customer service for ya. This was a REALLY good cup of Joe.

I read they're one of the best coffee and espresso spots in the city so I went to check them out myself. Ordered myself a mocha and was blown away. Very deep dark flavor with just the right amount of sweetness. The freshness of their beans is unmatched since they roast them right here. Dark Matter is definitely as good as they say.

Being there first time, I asked for a cup (I had my mug) of good coffee. I got it for free! And I liked it a lot. They roast their coffee there. If you don't see the signs, tjust follow the scent. It's omnipresent within will a block radius! Nice decor inside.

When I worked for CPS, I found myself a regular patron at the Dark Matter Mothership. The baristas there were very helpful and would always make the absolute BEST cappuccino! I will be going to Dark Matter for many years to come when I am in their 'neck of the woods'. I would love to see a Dark Matter Coffee shop in Gurnee in the years to come..

We came to the Dark Matter Coffee Roasting Facilities for a Saturday morning tour, and spent two hours learning all about their philosophy and process while sampling the different roasting and brewing methods along the way. We had beans from El Salvador and each method extracted slightly different flavor profiles. Besides learning a great deal about coffee from beans to brew, the Dark Matter crew was hospitable, passionate and make a great product. You can get Dark Matter coffee at numerous cafes around the city, but I recommend going to the Star Lounge which is their cafe.

If I lived in Chicago this is a place I would want to hang out. Everyone there is extremely friendly and thier coffee is among the best roasted in the city. It was surprisingly cheap for the high quality, and they even tried to give me mine for free. This will be my first stop my next time in the city.

If your a coffee connoisseur ☕ you have to try this place out! Change my mind but this is the beat coffee place in Chicago (for local coffee and stocking up on fresh grounds/beans). Atheistic of the place is a one of kind. Really amazing varieties to choose from and they import their coffee from Mexico, Colombia and El Salvador. Really rich and flavorful coffee to please any coffee fan. Can't wait to come back!

So, if you have every said "I'm a coffee person" or "I can't start my day without a cup of coffee" or even "blah blah blah coffee blah blah" and you haven't stopped here but have had the chance? You're not a coffee person. I've ordered their coffee online for years and when my dad and I road tripped through Chicago I wanted to stop in. The area sketched him out but we were there so we had to. He chose a coffee which they said was free cause he had never been there before. I loaded up like i was apocalypse prepping. We were met with nothing but the highest of customer service as well as the hands down best coffee. I got an ipa infused iced coffee. I wish this place was closer to the East Coast. Go here.

Enjoyed the great coffee. Did not like the fact that on 4/20 they have ads on Instagram stating their coffee has cannibis. So in other words would would think they would at least have CBD available for your coffee. No not in this case. Smaller cafe's that dont even advertise that they carry CBD actually have CBD in their cafe's. When cafe's that talk a lot about cannibis, but dont even carry CBD in their cafe makes me realize they are the opposite of a cannabis activist. Don't plan to visit any of their locations again.

Amazing coffee roastery - really enjoyed my experience which was particular highlighted by their employee Buck. I went for a bag of their coffee for my visit. They have a multitude of choices from a comfortable standard blend to several unique roasts. The atmosphere was comfortable with great wood interior, and no loud music during my visit as another had expirienced. The staff was definitely a HUGE shining point for me. I was helped by a gentleman named Buck who had an extremely thorough knowledge of their roasts. He took the time to explain each of them in great detail when asked, offered his personal opinions and recommendations, and offered a taste of the roasts he had available as I decided which bag I would purchase. Additionally, if you buy a bag you also get a free coffee. This was an extremely positive experience and I hope they recognize Buck as a really exceptional employee, as he really contributed to my experience there.

So I accidentally went to this location instead of Star Lounge, but to my surprise they're about 2 blocks from eachother! This location has no indoor seating and only 2-3 tables outside, so I'd recommend this as the better location for drinks to go and Star Lounge for a study/date spot. Both have consistently good drinks.

My husband and I eloped in Chicago, and on our way back home, I insisted we stop into the Dark Matter Mothership. I have had and bought beans at a local coffee shop, and just loved it. Upon arriving, we were greeted by Dan (I really hope I am remembering this name right).. and man, he was great. He was very informative on their beans and roasts. I don't drink alcohol - and they had their coffee on tap, and allowed us to sample. This place is heaven - this is now my new favorite bar! ;) I had told Dan about our recent elopement and he was beyond sweet and hospitable. Dark matter is by far one of my favorite Roasters in Chicago. They have their own eclectics style. I love this home base location of theirs. There's an elaborate steampunk Decor all throughout Buy Local artist Jason Brammer. Big Ups to Jason. I love how dark matter is committed to being a local company providing local jobs. I am also a big fan of how dark matter will partner with local restaurants to create Unique Blends. This only adds to the diversity and culture of Chicago. These guys are doing it right. My favorite drink here is the iced latte. A little simple syrup and you've got a delightful breakfast treats. Get in here now!

Literally the best latte I've never had in my life. And I've had a lot of lattes. I had to pace myself so I didn't drink the whole thing in one gulp. Seriously so good. The outside is pretty nondescript but it definitely has a "dark" aesthetic inside. This is quick service place, no where to sit inside or out. I'll definitely be back for more lattes!! Overpriced coffee and poor customer service. While there, they made a wrong order on a customer's drink and did not do anything to remedy their mistake. "You'll like the drink, it's good" was their response. No bathroom or indoor seating. Doughnuts were meh, was more like a sweet bread than doughnut.

There is one thing that takes the highest priority in the early morning hours and that is where to get coffee, and where to get good coffee. Despite living in the suburbs I have fought my way through traffic to get to the Mothership before rushing back to the suburbs for my afternoon classes on at college. My two go-to drinks is always a tie between the Cortado and an Iced Mocha. The pro: -Easy access to the shop which makes grab n go possibly -Merchandise + Coffee available for purchase The Con: If parking is taken right in front of the shop you may have to circle the block a time or two. The other fun fact is that the Mothership is right around the corner from The Star Lounge. Their menus differ from one another but the vibe of Dark Matter Coffee in either location does not. The best part about Dark Matter Coffee is the fact that is not overloaded with syrups/ and sugar. You get the authentic taste of coffee and that strong caffeine kick you're looking for in the early morning.

I was in the city visiting friends and wanted to find some unique coffee shops. This location was a bit of a hike for me, but SUPER worth it. Funky vibe and friendly, helpful staff. I almost always go for mochas, but this time I asked if they had any special recommendations... why not be exciting‽ I tried the barrel-aged mocha which had this really interesting, “whisky” feeling. The barrel-aging gave a distinct, but balanced flavor. Highly recommend.

The Dark Matter coffee shop on Western Ave plays loud, Heavy Metal music - which is not my thing. The staff, however, were very pleasant with me - as they noted I was out of my comfort zone! The iced coffee was good; & I would go back for the multi-unit snack. Not necessarily a regular coffee drinker, but I had been told by a number of coffee fanatics that Dark Matter was just about the best place I could go for a cup. Foolish and inexperienced, I walked into the shop on an empty stomach and gulped down a Red Eye — the store's coffee with an espresso shot. The taste was solid (again, my lack of regular coffee drinking means that I was unable to detect any artistry in the brewing) and I only burned my tongue once, but a few hours later, my stomach had made its displeasure clear. From 8pm to 12:15am, I was in massive pain. After water and a few hour-long sessions with my head precariously draped over a toilet bowl, I recovered. I will be going back to Dark Matter soon, though with a new wealth of experience and a stomach full of food, to enjoy this wonderful concoction again.

I love this place. I didn’t think there would be a difference in buying this coffee or the popular bags of coffee sold in stores but there’s a clear difference. Everyone is super friendly!

Awesome coffee, great service. Ordered a macchiato and then wanted to try one of the in-house specials called Chocolate City and Mike ended up giving me a free drink because of that. best place in the city hands down both locations are fantastic.

Great local coffee roasters that focus on small batches of coffee at a time, rotating so often. Their coffee, for me, is stronger than some more established brands. But, I do like how they are (I think) the only roasters to experiment with barrel aging. Barrel aging has done wonders for beer and it is catching on to the coffee industry as well.

Great, locally-roasted, fresh coffee served by extremely friendly guys who are passionate about the company and the product. I'll love this place up until they go corporate - but right now, they're a diamond in the rough. Expensive, but worth it.

I went here with a friend for their first tour of how they roasted their coffee. It was awesome! Great decor of the place - as they had someone handpaint inside & as well as outside. People were really nice and informative. They let us sample their coffee. It was really delicious!! I'm not a big coffee person but i had no problems with it. It was fascinating how they let us see how the process was from beginning to end!
