A contemporary setting and a few vegetarian options. We went for the veggie burger which was provided along with a healthy portion of potato fries and was very tasty. Staff were friendly, and for the area it was good value for money.

We enjoyed this cafe/restaurant. Fab views over Hilo Bay from deckside and windowside tables. We were there during the afternoon menu. Although somewhat limited, we found it just fine. The fish and chips was great and the poke too. Thoroughly enjoyed the passion fruit tea.

Great dinner experience. So much more than we expected. The decor and ambiance is the nicest we have seen in Hilo Hawaii. The entire star was pleasent and attentive. Especially our server Anna. She was very knowlegable and helpful. I had the Duck Duck Demi which as totally great and she had the Ribs. All delicious. A great dinner to celebrate our anniversary.

Aboslutely outstanding view + staff, this place is a great place to have a fine dining. The only "problem" (or concern) I have is when you're at the open patio (ocean side) these flying insects often like to hang out with your food, so you have to constantly use your hands to blow them away. This restaurant is definitely a win-win (price was worth it) nonetheless!

This review is more pointed at Hilo Bay Cafes cocktails and bar. Short and sweet. They have some of the most delicious cocktails I have ever tasted with wonderfully, friendly and knowledgeable bartenders. They are actually reasonably priced, not cheap but not out of control. It is an absolute treat to go and relax and have a cocktail with the amazing view. I may do a later review on food but so far I am in love with their Bao buns off of the appetizer menu. So Ono.

We love the place! We eat here at least once a month and usually ask for an outside table. The staff is fast and friendly and the food is locally sourced. It is quite busy during lunch and dinner hours and reservation's are strongly suggested but they always try to accommodate people without reservations. Make sure you ask for the daily specials because some servers do not offer the info. The fish and chips are always made with the fresh catch of the day so ask what it is. This is also the best sushi bar in Hilo!

We had the best meal here whilst in Hawaii for 2 weeks. The sushi and sashimi was delicious - the edible fern sushi was surprisingly good! The braised brussel sprouts with mushrooms were not what we expected at all and simply delicious. They were also very accommodating for gluten free options and had a great understanding of it. Not only was the food amazing but the cocktails were just spot-on! We tried nearly every single one on the menu. Even though they were busy, our waiter was very attentive between serving and making cocktails. Great value too, considering the level of quality they were plating up.

Wow, during a long day on our around the Big Island journey, we happened upon the Hilo Bay Cafe after seeing Rainbow Falls, and were SO glad we did. Fish was perfectly prepared, salad crisp, and the hummus plate was fabulous! Setting is amazing, great view, cool breeze, alooooooha, team was accommodating, friendly and sought to make our visit enjoyable. It’s definitely a $$ but worth it! This was the perfect final stop before the final drive around to Kona.

Tables on the lanai afford the best view of Hilo Bay. Great food and good drinks. There is nothing on the menu that isn't delicious. Vegan and gluten free items. Attentive knowledgeable wait staff, excellent handling of allergies. There are only a handful of really good restaurants in Hilo and this is one of our favorites for lunch or dinner. Easy parking, and an elevator in the back if the stairs are too much. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation because there can be long waits.

Very pleasant evening. Except there is no AC and August has been an extremely warm and humid month. Was hoping for a little relief from the heat but didnt get much. My meal was delicious, I had the chicken with Polenta, my husband had the Fish(MahiMahi) and Chips. Our meal was $72 including 2 glasses of wine. Some won't say that was expensive but I thought it was.

I made our reservation on open table, I requested a bay view table and got one for our party of five. That was awesome, it's a beautiful view!! The service was excellent. The food was delicious but portions are way too small, especially considering how pricey the menu is. Btw, I'm a 100 lb woman, not a big eater. Great location for a romantic meal for sure.

Nice place, great location, friendly staff, and fantastic food. Had a grilled Ahi with curried veggies that was perfectly prepared, promptly served, and absolutely delicious. Be prepared, there can be a wait for seating. For one or two you might be able to skip the wait if you're willing to sit at the bar. If you need a table, I still think it's worth the wait.

Very popular lunch and dinner spot in Hilo. I do recommend making reservations because it can get busy. I had the catch of the day fish and chips and it was totally awesome. Hilo Bay Cafe is beautifully appointed in blonde wood, the food is quite good, cocktails creative, staff professional and attentive. All of this added up to one of the most miserable dining experiences ever. Why? The dining room was so unbearably hot and uncomfortable that it was all we could do to finish our meal before fainting. The manager explained the building has no air conditioning. Despite the armada of ceiling fans, warm nights will not be a pleasant experience. If it's hot, and the trade winds are not blowing, cancel your reservation and dine elsewhere.

Beautiful view, good service. I ordered fish and chips. ($20) The portion size(approx. 4oz) for that price was quite small and the fish was over cooked and dry. Others in my group had a better experience. But small portion sizes seemed to be the trend. The surf and turf bowl had good quality meats ($30). My wife ordered a strawberry coconut soda.($6) It was worth every penny, delicious.

This review is not based on the meal. The lunch was fine. I just wanted to warn other patrons to be very careful going up and down those stairs. I feel lucky because it could have been worse. I slipped on the stairs today and am still bleeding and very sore. We come here every time we visit, never going back there again. Why never? Still charged me full price and were more worried about a lawsuit than my injuries.

Hands down my all time favourite restaurant. The grass fed beef burger is a must have. That being said I came back multiple times and tried multiple dishes and all were exceptional. So disappointed, after hearing how good this place was, I have been looking forward to going. We arrived late-afternoon, plenty of staff, very few customers. We were ignored for 10 minutes while the desk clerk chatted on the phone. Then another 10 minutes while she 'prepared a table' for us. No warm aloha spirit here. The staff were inauthentic, unwelcoming, distracted and unaware, banging past our table (on the lanai, plenty of other routes to take) repeatedly as a chosen thoroughfare. The chairs are uncomfortable molded plastic and the food left a lot to be desired. Am hoping that we happened to go at an unfortunate moment, NOT prepared to go again to find out. What a shambles! Give it a miss, there are other, better restaurants in Hilo!

My family had the most amazing first experience. We came for dinner and my adult children are extremely picky eaters. They ordered off of the kids menu the sliders, chicken fingers and the best Mac and cheese EVER!!! The only disappointment was that I wanted to try the scallops, but they were out. However, my husband and I enjoyed our meals and felt it was the best we had on the island. Our downfall was going back for lunch.... My husband and I wanted to try a new restaurant, but my children enjoyed it so much that we were talked into going back 2 days later for lunch. The hostess clearly needs a lesson in customer service. We were told it would be approximately a 30 minute wait. After 25 minutes and 5 families that came in after us being seated before us I simply asked, How much longer would it be?" The hostess responded, "I said 30 minutes and it will be 30 minutes." At that point, I said that it seemed like it has been 30 minutes and she said you only waited 25 minutes so you have some more time, don't you...I should have walked out. We waited an additional 15 minutes and another 3 families were seated (all stating they did not have reservations.) We were finally seated and it took 35 minutes to get our drinks. When we tried to order, we were told that we could not order off the kid's menu. The hostess came over to tell us it was an oversight the night before and to figure something else out. I offered to pay additional and she said no. After 5 minutes and us almost walking out she said they could serve us an adult size Mac and cheese and an adult size chicken fingers.... Not sure why she could not have started with that but it felt like she needed to caused a issue that could have been avoided. By the way.. the adult size was the EXACT same size as the kids!!! (Which we offered to pay more to simply get what we would like!)

Wow!!! I had the fish and chips which featured swordfish .. normally I shy away from this fish but I’m glad I took the waiter Chris’s recommendation... absolutely delicious and the gin and grapefruit cocktail was outstanding. This place is not to be missed and I’m pretty sure Chris has the best handle bar mustache on the island. Service wasnothing short of perfection and he stated he was normally behind the bar ... either place you encounter him .. it’s going to be a great experience.

Enjoyed our lunch. Poke was great, just so ya know spicy means very spicy. Ono fish and chips were juicy n perfectly cooked. Burger was great. Fun ginger cumcumber drink was yummy although kinda small (cute Collins glass) for the price. Service was good, never ran out of water or waited excessively for anything. Definitely will return. Cool view on their deck overlooking hilo town n mauna kea misty mountain top. I'd bet a great spot for those days they get a good sunset too.

Overpriced is a not a good place to start because if it were excellent the price would not be a problem. From the hostess to the server the staff was not ready to serve, rather I felt like myself and my guest were an inconvenience. Half a dozen open tables but the wait was 20 minutes. My guest does have special dietary requests but isn't that why you choose a restaurant like this? After discussing options that would have been excellent if they cooked it in olive oil instead of canola oil the response was " can I start you with something?" Couldn't ask the chef? I ordered the fish and chips, should have been easy. By the breading and the fries the oil was not hot enough, resulting in limp, oily food. We didn't risk dessert. Sadly I will have to not recommend HBC and I say that with no pleasure, so many people say hilo's food scene is lacking and with offerings like this I have to agree.

Very trendy cafe with great food and great views. Located on the 2nd floor, it delivers a very relaxing atmosphere with the option for outdoor dining. The view of the bay is beautiful and paired with the relaxing atmosphere makes for a wonderful dining experience. The staff is very friendly and attentive. If you like French Onion soup you have to try it here. Definitely some of the best I've had. My group also had the fresh catch fish & chips, crab cake salad, pimento grilled cheese sandwich, and a few fresh sushi rolls. ZERO complaints!! I highly recommend this place for lunch.

I had a few people tell that should eat here. I was completely disappointed. The service was slow. We sat down and didn't see our waiter for at least 10 minutes. I ordered the ribs. I have had a lot of different ribs in my life but these were the worst. I could hardly eat them. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing and I caught them on a bad day. Either way, I will not go back anytime soon.
