Ahhh! The Toymaker's Cafe..... It's a destination spot for many motorcycle riders in the tri-state (Connecticut, New York, & Massachusetts) area.
Getting here is half the fun. Every route presents spectacular roads and scenery.
The cafe itself is a wonderfully quaint little place, with an eclectic mix of furnishings making for a warm, inviting space. The food is cooked on one small grille by the same fellow who also buys and sells vintage Brit bike stuff on days when the cafe is closed.
You might share one of the few tables inside with some hipsters up from New York City, or maybe a somewhat disheveled hiker off the AT, which passes very nearby, in slight need of a shower, a couple of weekend bicyclists, or very likely a few fellow motorcyclists.
All can chat and enjoy each others' company. A really neat thing.
I've stopped in on several occasions, and always enjoy whatever I order. The one meal I've never tried was any variation on breakfast, although it can be had all day.
On this last visit, I wasn't terribly hungry, so I had a bowl of their own chili. My riding buddy this day had eggs and biscuits with sausage gravy.
I mentioned to him that my chili, while very flavorful, tasted like the cap had fallen off the salt shaker when making it. He reluctantly replied that his sausage and gravy tasted that way also. VERY salty.
Too bad, because it only needed a smidgen of salt since it was so good otherwise. Maybe today was an unfortunate fluke.....I'd like to think so.
It certainly won't prevent me from stopping in the future, I'll just be more selective about what I have next time.
It's a great destination ride and a really cool little cafe, even if you only stop for a hot or cold beverage and to chat with the variety of folks who also come here.
