You know that we do not usually bother to give evaluations when these are good and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Coffee Shop corresponds to the category of Cafe.
We loved everything we ordered! The menu is more upscale than it used to be when I first started coming here years ago. We got the octopus appetizer--delicious! Also, the grain bowl is delicious and healthy. We also got several soups and sandwiches which were great. You can't beat the price for the quality of the good. All of the homemade breads are stellar!
I came to pick up some delicious bread for a party but stayed to shop. I had forgotten about the vast array of cards and gifts. A little pricey but beautiful items you won't find anywhere else in the area. Worth a stop when you need a tasteful little something for a special occasion. And be sure to visit the cafe. This is one of downtown New Haven's oldest family owned and operated businesses.
Excellent selection (humor, biography, science, etc.). They offer 15% off all hardcovers except "bargain" books and children's books. The café tends to be very busy.
Cool stuff but don't support many local non profits
Came in here because the vibe seemed inviting. Asked the barista for a recommendation and he told me he didn't understand the question. I told him to give me his recommendation on what to try, and he handed me a menu. We decided to try a nitro cold brew for the first time. It was super smooth but almost a little beer-like in it's flavor. Good but different. After we tasted it we asked the waitress if people normally add cream and sugar like they might to any normal cup of coffee and she said, maybe. After adding cream and a little sugar it was basically garbage. Tasted like gross thick sweet beer. We tossed it and headed out. Won't be going back honestly. Weird experience with staff but otherwise ok.
I was turned off from this place for a long time because of the display of very left-leaning, even radical literature in its window. I felt like they were catering to a particular customer who was not me. BUT, I went in with some buddies today for lunch, and their pork sandwich and mac and cheese were excellent. The selection of books was great too and much less extreme/partisan than it seemed last year and the year before. Good books, good service, will return.
The classic New Haven luncheon bookstore. Original design by Wayne Elie back in the early 80s. Great food and good books.
Delicious food and a fantastic curated selection of books. Great vibes!
Great place to have a bite and be surrounded by books.
Absolute worst experience I have ever had. I had been here before and loved it. Today I had the server Danielle. she was extremely rude and incompetent. She took 20 minutes to bring us our tea and had to be reminded about everything we ordered. 50 minutes after being seated she asked if we wanted the check when we hadn't even received our food yet. She said she's forgot to put the food in. There was no apology or acknowledgement that she had messed up. Then she came back and said she found the order but they were now out of what I had asked for an hour prior. She treated me with extreme disrespect that I did not deserve. That was an unacceptable experience.
The bookstore always surprises me with at least one new, random book that becomes a favorite: a book on existentialism, or grammar, or poetry. (I now assign the grammar book to my students--I am a university professor, not at Yale, but I'm a Yale alumna.) What I'm most excited about based on my most recent visit to Atticus is their new (I honestly don't know how new it is, but it's new to me) approach to book recommendations. The staff members have shelves that give you a decent sense of what each person's interests are--though these tend to be broad in scope, it's not like one person likes sci fi and one likes romance and one likes biography: based on what I've seen the staff reads across genres a lot. The recommended books are interesting on their own, but what's really cool is that each staff member has selected a few "mystery/take a chance on me" books. These come wrapped in brown paper, and each has a very short teaser-description of the book. I think this is a brilliant idea. It's like opening a present every time I finish a book and get to start a new one. I'm excited about my first book, which is now open, and my father is over the moon about his, which he's already finished. A+, Atticus. Will you ship me some random ones? I'll read anything at this point.
So chill. The books are great while not very well known. I had a great time browsing everything.
Oh man this place was a ton of fun. My wife just ordered toast and they brought it to her with butter and jam and it was delicious. And it's a wonderful book store, too there is a great selection of the books both new release and classics and it's just a really fun place to be. I highly recommend the Atticus bookstore.
I really enjoyed the lunches I have had here, the Mac and Cheese is extraordinary. However, the times that I have had breakfast here I have not enjoyed my meal as much. Finding the porridge to be almost tasteless and the French Toast to as well be lacking. It would be a four star lunch, however I would hardly ever reccomend the breakfast.
Great coffee to go with a great atmosphere
Lovely lunch.great selection of books.
Nice place to enjoy a good meal and some great books. Staff is friendly and attentive and the prices are reasonable.
Good food. Busy at lunchtime
A New Haven staple. Delightful nook with lots of interesting, new books, cards, bookmarks, and accessories for sale. The muffins and sandwiches are divine. Stop by. Sit. Meet friends and chat. Browse books. Definitely have breakfast, lunch, brunch, or a light dinner. Staff are friendly, and best of all . . . The prices are affordable. Great place for students, empty nesters, retirees, tourists, and all. My favorite muffin is called: "Morning Glory." It can really brighten your day!
Busy good food
Good coffee (many varieties) , delicious bread and scones.
It used to have my all time favourite sandwich (kimchi & roast beef) but they don't anymore. Still great quality food (love the soups!) in an iconic New Haven place
Whenever we visit New Haven, we have to stop at Atticus Bookstore/Cafe. They have the best breads and jams in town. I love all their soups, salads and sandwiches. The bookstore is the best too. I love the cards, journals and stationary they offer. It's a must.
Excellent bookstore and wonderful cafe. Vegetarian friendly; one of the best hummus sandwiches in the area! They have a nice children's book section also.
Great food and environment!
Really fun place! Excellent food at the cafe.
This place is a gem. Excellent book selection, delicious food and a friendly atmosphere. Definitely go there!
Beautiful breads, to-go sandwiches and an subtly intricate lunch and breakfast menu, with a very kind and accommodating staff. I forgot my bike lock key and they let me rest my bicycle inside while I ate :} ♥
Great spot! Perfect combo of cafe and bookstore. Really enjoyed the drinks here.
Amazing place to go for gifts and cards. The sell locally made greeting cards which everyone loves to receive.
This restaurant/bookstore has original food options. The menu is limited. They do have a breakfast menu. Atticus is similar to Panera, but locally owned (I believe).
The difference between take out and table service at the cafe was not made clear to us before we ordered, and the wait staff was extremely rude when we asked about it
Scones & muffins were bland. Even the hot chocolate was lousy. Overpriced as well.
Great food and awesome books. I couldn't help myself but to buy 6 books along with breakfast. The staff are helpful and courteous. I love this place
Great coffee shop in the heart of Yale
Sweet potato jalapeño soup with a big piece of bread. Five stars.
Lovely café opposite of Yale ❤️
5 stars!
This place is obviously popular, but I have to call them out for being rude. My wife walked in with an ice cream cone from a nearby business. I understand they have a no outside food or beverage policy. But it was snowing outside, and my wife needed a place to breastfeed. We ordered something off the menu. But the manager got rude about their outside food rule. She could have just politely gone with something like, "in the future please know our policy...." Instead she lost us as customers for good.
Small iced coffee... for $1? Really awesome. Great coffee, great vibes.
I enjoyed a great bowl of soup a Sunday afternoon in March. The soup was good, spicy and warm on that rather cold day and an atmosphere equally warm and hospitable created by the staff along with the company of my beloved friends, Barbara and William Morrissey, residents of New Haven, turned this into a very special day which I shall always remember.
Nice cafe inside the bookstore. Fast service. Standard salad, soup, and sandwich options. Would be nice if brunch went past noon on the weekend.
nice place to sit and have coffee the bread is great the food is nice there are a lot of books and stationary goods if you want to spend some time
They're great! I think maybe Bonnie (I asked a cashier for her name just so I could write this reviews) sets the tone. All the people behind the counter I've encountered have gone out of thereand seem to be in good moods. -rare for customer service positions. I only do take out these days though and that's what this review is about.
Great food. Great service with a smile. Will come back again
I was just in the Atticus bookstore and left without buying anything. The girl behind the back counter made continuous rounds through the store. I had picked up several wrapped books and was about to read the note on each of these recommended (mystery) books when she told me I wasn't allowed to read what they were about without buying them first!! And she wasn't kidding. She did offer to hold them for me while I shopped. I told not to bother as I'm not buying any books that I'm not allowed to read what they're about. Great way to lose a sale and a customer. Is the owner aware she is losing customers for them?? A Visitor from NYC
They're great! I think maybe Bonnie (I asked a cashier for her name just so I could write this reviews) sets the tone. All the people behind the counter I've encountered have gone out of thereand seem to be in good moods. -rare for customer service positions. Being right across the street from Art gallery is such a huge plus to this coffee shop, not to mention the bookstore.
Relaxed atmosphere in the mornings with good service and good food. A bit pricey with limited options.
Loved the place with food and books
Great staff, location, food and books and vinyl.
Great spot for a quick bite of deliciousness and some reading
Fun little spot to grab lunch or a book.
Veggie sandwiches are good, fresh everyday, thick bread slices, not much variety, sometimes cashier is the cook as well. Many places do this to save money on employees and I hate it.
Wonderful place!!! Great customer service when I took my girlfriend for lunch! Would really come back here again!! The people there are very nice!
A little cute cafe in the bookstore. Good scones and late but waiters are a bit slow.
Great bookstore, great food
Very nice, Very expensive. You pay for the premium of the store, and it's up to you if that's worth it. Don't come here to buy your books for school, come here to discover some new books, nicely curated, or maybe come for gift inspiration. They sell much more than just books, not even mentioning the cafe, but also all the fun knick-nacks that bookstores usually sell: literally cocktail guides, letter writing sets, etc... Never gotten food here, don't actually know if I've ever bought anything, but boy do I enjoy walking around inside! Look to the Booktrader cafe if you want a more affordable option (all used books!).
Great staff, inventory amazing bakery
Such an amazing little bookstore! Every Christmas and birthday I ask for a gift card to Atticus. It is a perfect spot, with great views, and has a cute little cafe. Perfect spot for curling up with some good food and a great book. I do wish it was bigger though!
Excellent selection of books and authors. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Alao high quality greeting cards and stationary. And a lovely lunch/ coffee shop attached. On the street parking or nearby garage parking. Very close to art museum and galleries.
Love getting Cheesecake here.
Atticus is a delightful place to shop and to meet friends for a light meal.
Very cozy and confortable. The food is good. Great book and gift selection!
Great food, great coffee, great service, all in a cramped but intimate and lively interior. Don't miss out on the excellent bread baked in-house. The bookstore also stocks a nice selection of predominantly fiction with a wonderful section of staff recommendations. A local favorite.
Not too many food selections but what we got was good and the atmosphere was nice.
We liked this little cafe. My breakfast sandwich was a disaster however. Super messy but still decently tasting.
This is my go-to spot for a New Haven breakfast. Friendly staff, and absolutely delicious truffle mac n' cheese!
Relaxed atmosphere, wide variety of bread available. Prices are a bit steep for a student budget, but you get good stuff.
Very friendly staff
Small bookstore with Cafe. Bread is good
Delicious food like it!
Chef Matt is the king. Unbelievable great food coming from a bookstore kitchen. This is true magic. Go Mat...
Went in for a quick bite to eat with my daughter. Food was good, large portion of meat on the sandwich. We took home the leftover's. I enjoyed browsing through the book store. I purchased a new puzzle for my Mother's birthday. They have a great selection to choose from. Expensive, 2 sandwiches and a coffee cost me $32.00. We were scared of the glasses, film and finger prints seen at a glance.
Good books. Good food. Nice brunch.
Best independent bookstore ever!!
My idea of heaven! Really good food at very affordable prices, fast, extremely friendly, and best of all, surrounded by an exceptional bookstore! How much better can it get!
Okay if you are looking for a moderate breakfast in a unique setting. Portions are small and the coffee cups are small.
Very cute bookstore with a nice café inside. The book selection is great, and varied, the food and drinks are awesome. They are strict though about you not taking books into the café area, which makes sense if you worry about the books getting messed up I guess, but takes away from the café inside of a bookstore vibe.
Coffee shop with really good food. Breakfast sandwich was delicious as well as meat soup. Scones and pastries are great also
Nice cafe with good food and beverages, small but well curated book selection for sale. An enjoyable place to spend time and shop for books
Books and delicious food and coffee. Can't think of many things better than this place.
Wow! To the food blew my.mind and satisfied all cravings. That's before we talk about the books!
Good lunch spot with great breads.
Solid, clean, healthy food at a reasonable price. This time had the black bean soup. Great. Only complaint, 75¢ for another slice of bread?
Unique combination of casual sandwiches, soups salads and bread as well great desserts in the middle of a book store located in the first floor of the Yale British Art Gallery. Good staff, good food, good location and fair price.
Grab and go sandwiches are amazing, keep it up
Great food. Great ambiance
What's not to like? Great food, service and atmosphere = nourishment for the mind, body and soul.
Waited an hour and a half for our food and watched folks who came in after us get served first. They had apparently lost our order, so that wasn't a great way to welcome my parents who were visiting for the weekend. The food is decent, but not worth such bad service!
Great atmosphere--it's an independent bookstore, so it's always good to help your small businesses. It can get really crowded during lunch and with that comes your typical delays, but it's worth it. The food is delicious and the staff is friendly-- you get to see them more than a lot of places: depending on your angle, you can also see the kitchen, which is cool.
Great breakfast stop. Healthy with some choices but brief menu.
Really good food. Wish the menu had more on it. Felt like I was stuck making a choice between only 4 things. But other than that. The food and drinks were great.
Food is good but would appreciate a few more choices. Really nice bookstore!
Awesome food, excellent service
A bright, modern spot very close to the green and main campus. Has nice soups and fresh breads. A good place to meet with friends.
A cool breakfast spot in the middle of the bookstore. Plenty of healthy options available. Service was fast and friendly. It was fun browsing books afterwards
The Corn in all of America
Delicious food and great service and view
Food was good and the server was nice!
The best bread I have ever had.
We are spoiled to have such lovely food with such beautiful bread. Would definitely recommend to go on a the weekend for the small plates/meals that they serve. Such great food !!!
Great selection of books, but very unfriendly! I bought things before before 8AM and online it says that it's open at 7AM, but somehow I just wanted to by a postcard and got turned down at 7:30AM.. they let me wonder around for 15min and when I walk up to pay.. no it's not possible.
I appreciated a lot
One of my favorite lunch places when I'm in New Haven. Interesting options, yummy desserts, friendly staff. And after you eat, you can browse the books.
Amazing books awesome staff on the floor of the restaurant as well as in the book store. Works perfect.
Only had tea and it wasn't very hot. But the atmosphere and service are great.
Love going to Atticus for brunch. Their selection of savory food is excellent, and their desserts and coffee are even better!! Sometimes there is a wait especially on Sundays but it is never very long. The service is great and their food tastes very fresh and good. After eating, you can check out the books and get something new to read for home.
Very good. Visiting from out of town. Their bread is outstanding!
Every time I've been, the service has been excellent and the waitstaff polite and attentive. The food is always very fresh. I highly recommend the Italian tuna salad, its amazing. Sandwiches are big, hearty and reasonably priced. I love this place, it's one of my favorites.
Nice books. OK coffee
Small but interesting collection of books, art-quality greeting cards, and the food in the café looked good!
Perfectly located with a great atmosphere and resources. The Cafe is really good with a lot of options. Lots of great books here. This is a good place to hang out.
Great atmosphere where you'll find great food, a treasure trove of books, and an attentive and helpful staff.
My fav is the Pear salad. Always a good destination for bringing family and friends.
Avodaco and scrambled egg awesome. Nice to break the fast with books all over my line of site.
They give you bookmarks with your purchase! It's a cozy environment.
Great little cafe within a bookstore. Great service at the cashier, table service hit or miss, but food is consistently good. It's popular with locals and tourists, so it's always crowded.
The chocolate croissants feel like I'm back in France. The Coffee is perfect. The employees are the nicest people ever. The book selection is great, and you can find a lot of lgbtq friendly books, some new haven books, some Connecticut books, kids books, anything you could want. They have games, puzzles and stationary too.
One if New Haven's great cafe restaurants. In a bookstore. Great healthy food server to the friendly staff keeps me coming back time and again. The bread is fantastic and the baked treats delicious, and the breakfast and lunch menu is super. you haven't eaten them in the Havens best until you've eaten at Atticus. It a chance to take home a book as well. Which of the lot more than Amazon can deliver any day of the week
I loved this bookstore so much! A small but we'll curated collection, and my favorite part is the blind book dates. I bought a mystery book based on the staff recommendation and wound up reading a book I never would have picked up otherwise that is now one of my all time favorites! Such a fun experience! And the place is well lit. It gets a little crowded but it's still a pleasant place to peruse books and find a new treasure or two.
Cozy, great food, fresh ingredients, nice people.
Friendly service, the food was pretty good for a Sunday brunch crowd. We had no issues, given how busy it was... There was a bit of a wait for our coffee, but considering there were never empty tables, and pretty quick turnaround (for the most part), everything was really good. Afterward, we shopped the bookstore side and liked the selection and organization.. Make sure to check out the employees' recommendations, if you want to stretch out from your comfort zone a little bit... they come wrapped in brown paper, so you just have to trust them. I thought that was a neat feature.
I visit Atticus everytime I am in New Haven.
Great service, great environment, was very clean, food (Croque Monsieur) was fresh, tasty and filling. Drinks (50/50 and blueberry lemonade) were bomb. A worry of mine with these combo cafes (e.g., bookstore café combo) is that the owners have too many things to focus on and end up doing all the combined things poorly. Atticus Bookstore café did not have this problem. They have a sufficient amount staff, things work smoothly, every need was attended to, prices are very fair. A great experience, a great café, and a welcoming environment. Keep up the wonderful work!
Super yummy meatball sandwich!
Our family loves this book store! Great selection, friendly people, and independent!
We tracked down Atticus Books and started browsing the shelves. They had ok selections, so we wanted to look further into a few books to see if we should purchase them. As we had walked very far that day, we wanted to sit and read a few minutes. There are absolutely no chairs in the bookstore side. We saw several empty tables on the cafe side and figured (like most Barnes and Nobles) it would be no problem for us to sit at a table since we were planning to buy books. I was wrong. As soon as we sat down, a rude employee told us “You can’t sit there! Get the books off the table! I told them to make the sign bigger! (gesturing to a sign that was in fourteen font on one bookshelf).” We put up all of our books and left the store. Every part of the situation was wrong. If there is a rule that customers can’t sit in the cafe side (which is silly), provide customers with a few chairs in the book area. Even if the situation was unchanged, show employees how to speak to customers. This particular employee was the single reason we left the store. We will not pay to be berated.
Good place to meet
Great coffee, breads, and books.
Very cute place and for a small business I thought it had a good selection of books. What I didnt like was the policies and the people who worked there. I picked out 2 books off the shelf and had full intentions on buying them. I decided to sit down at the cafe, rest a bit, and read a chapter of one of the books I picked out in the meantime. Apparently there is a policy where a customer can't sit down at the cafe with unpurchased merchandise, and was promptly kicked out of the cafe. I'll admit I don't know much about running a business, but this is a ridiculous policy. YOU ARE A BOOK CAFE. Sitting and reading should be this place's thing, right? Maybe I can understand if the cafe was packed durring lunch hour, but this was 5 o'clock on a wednesday with 2 other people in the cafe. I can sit in a Barnes and noble cafe and read as long as I want and won't be kicked out. I can do the same at Book Trader down the street too. If you want this policy to stay then at least have a sign posted somewhere saying so. Very unprofessional and poorly handled in my opinion. As my first experience at Atticus I will not be coming back.
Top notch food! The tables are a little close; they're trying to accommodate the line of people waiting for food.
Great food, great ambiance
Great breakfast cafe conveniently located near Yale University.
The food and drink were beyond compare. Truly excellent.
Very cozy, great food and perfect book selection. Love to eat with my mom then walk two seconds to the art museums!
Great coffee, friendly service, pleasant atmosphere. (Excellent books.)
Great quality food and coffee
Great lunch spot!
The coffee was great. I had a blast perusing the books with fellow book lovers. I saw a lot of interesting titles. The snacks were well done as well. This location can get busy during the school year. Go Bulldogs!
Very nice place to relax and read a book. Delicious chai and the raspberry chocolate scone mmmmm
Delicious sandwiches and salads.
Quaint place, larger than it looks from outside. Because of the library like setting, its very quiet. But not unsettlingly so. The selection of food isn't too small, but not overwhelmingly large either. Not to mention the taste, 100%will visit again. But the only reason I can't rate it 5 stars is that the place they go to make and get food seems too open to the patrons, and the register is far too close to the seats for any conversation to be truly "intimate". All other problems are minuscule in comparison and are remedied by other amenities.
Great food, but a bit to pricey for me.
Excellent coffee and great food!
So even if you can't read, you need to eat! Go here to have their black bean soup 365 days a year in the heart of Yale and stop by the British Art Museum for a bit of culture of you're so inclined!
Decades-running best black bean soup around. Bring your own mug-to-go... they'll fill it with good coffee for a buck .
The pastries are good, typically not very sweet, and many are made with whole grain flour. The rye chocolate chip cookies are amazing. The food's good, with fresh ingredients, but table service is really poor. Last time I had lunch there, the waitress chastised me for buying a cookie from the counter, rather than ordering it at the table, and then asked me and my friend to leave after 40 minutes because other people were waiting.
We got there and anything we asked to n the menu needed 45 min wait. The cashier suggested we get items which were ready made. He gave me a turkey sandwich which looked. We left.
A New Haven institution.
Great and friendly service.
Nice Colombian host who offered some bread pudding while we waited for a table. Unique layout and signs labeling the books
The yellow milk sounds gross but was actually delicious.
My favorite place in New Haven.
Loved this place when I was an undergrad, and it's still awesome!
Nice place
Black bean soup is must try. The bread is excellent and make the sandwiches fantastic. Great place to study or read a book.
Great books! Great Food! Must go if you are looking for a coffee and book shop in the heart of New Haven. Breakfast and lunch offerings are delicious and bread is fresh baked.
Great food, cute bookstore, wonderful place to sit and drink coffee and read over breakfast
