This Coffee Shop is classified in the category of Cafe.
I've been going to Clayton's since I was about 10 years old. It maintains being an awesome 50s style diner and it's classic history so well. I love every moment spent here and in Coronado. Go Islanders!
Great atmosphere and food. They have a takeout window to the side as well for coffee.
It seems you need to know where to get a good coffee around San Diego. This is the only place so far which serves good coffee.
Great atmosphere (a real blast from the past) and service, Kris and I rode bikes from Chula Vista into coronado and stopped here. Food was decent, not extraordinary, but the quality of service made up for this. Fries here are crinklecut, not diner style, so be aware of that. Fried zucchini was good, though had a slight canola flavor, and the burgers were excellent, though expensive. A definite place to try at least once though.
Liked the veggie omelette with feta cheese and the service very friendly. Arrived on a Saturday around 930am there was a 40min wait. So bring somehing to snack on
Nice quiet and quaint mom and pop feel of a traditional diner with super friendly staff and a delicious menu with a good quantity of items without going overboard
This is such a cool place. If ur coming on the weekend don’t come hungry cuz you will probably have a long wait for a table. Food is great. The kids love it here especially the shakes
Everything I’ve ever tried here has been amazing.
Cute little old fashion coffe shop
Great food..our waitress was phenomenal..love her.
Old school diner with welcoming staff and good food. Excellent experience and a blast from the past. Wish we lived closer and could come more often.
Came in on a busy Sunday morning with our 4 young children. They way they accommodated and entertained our children was over the top. Their patience, service and food was outstanding! Can’t wait to go back!!
Great food and staff, it is a very cute place to eat. They have an old jukebox if you want to place some music.
The real deal, authentic home cooking. Back for seconds. While the corn beef hash is not NYC, it was up for the challenge and I loved it! Croissant sandwich was a hit and today we will try the biscuits and gravy and I will get a healthy omelet. The service as well as atmosphere is great too!
My wife and I had a most delightful experience here. Hah! First. Time saying that in a review, as we just got married. Our coffee was really tasty and reasonably priced. The staff are kind and helpful. We had a great time.
First time we went there was for dinner and it was full. We had to wait an hour for our food and the food was nothing extraordinary, with the exception of the chocolate shake, which was pretty good. We sat at the bar and the bartender was nice but I've never had to wait for so long. They also lost our credit card at the end. Second time I went was to the takeout window at 4:30 on a Monday, so not peak time. The restaurant was at most half full. Yet it took the takeout waitress 10 minutes to get through two orders, including a simple one of only soft serve ice cream. When my turn came up, she refused to make a shake because the machine was too busy. Too busy. During Non-Peak time. I mean come on. She couldn't do the second part of my order either because she needed to find it on the menu and was having a hard time finding it (it's literally the first item on their lunch menu). At that point I just gave up and left.
Stepping in here, you might think Scotty pushed the wrong button on the transporter and sent you 60 years into the past. The detailing is perfect, down to the vinyl swivel seats at the lunch counter and the matching vinyl padded booths. The emphasis is definitely on comfort food, but the ingredients are fresh, the preparation good, and it came out of the kitchen lickety-split. Portions are more than ample, and the prices, while not quite at a level of 60 years ago, are quite reasonable by 2019 standards. And yes, the service was both friendly and efficient. I didn't quite get up enough nerve to put two quarters in the distributed jukebox system, once again straight out of the 50s or 60s, but next time I think I will have to venture a try.
Good breakfast food and design.
A busy, little "coffee shop" nestled in the middle of Orange Ave. is Clayton's. The simple decor from a time long gone scatters the walls with old furnishings bringing a rustic vibe that pairs well with the menu. Your standard fare of traditional homestyle breakfast scatter the menu with little bits of flare like the Chorizo breakfast burrito, and acai bowl. With a little taco shop connected around the corner (with an amazing to go counter that also serves the entire menu), there is a awesome bet that the Mexican food is an easy go to. With a great staff helping you along the way, Clayton's is a great stop if you're in Coronado. Weekends are always crazy so get there early and try and grab a table. It will be worth it.
Best biscuits and gravy EVER. Attentive staff, great food, cool atmosphere. Was fun explaining to my kids how the jukeboxes that they have at each table worked "when I was a kid back in the olden times" like my daughter said.
Long wait and no a/c - AND the best food that I had in San Diego / Coronado over two separate visits this summer. We only had breakfast here (thrice) but the quality of product was obvious and would expect this to be present with lunch or dinner items. One dinner downside, no beer or wine.
Very Yummy food, BUT not great service. We came in and sat at the bar stools the place wasn't packed at all but a good amount of people where there. Our menus were closed and we kept staring at the waitress to come over. She would come over and talk to the guys RIGHT next to us then walk away. We eventually just called her over and go to order. Food was delicious and the apple pie was wonderful!!
Coffee was good. Inside the cafe, it was hot. The cha cha burrito was bland without avocado or salsa served- tasted like a can of chili mixed with eggs wrapped in a tortilla. The breakfast gravy was basic. The baked goods and milkshakes looked good- maybe we didn’t order the right thing.
Fantastic breakfast in an old diner atmosphere. Lots of good options to choose from and quick service make this a great place for breakfast.
Omg okay. I love this place.. like recommend everyone to go there.. but tonight it went down two stars. It was infested with flies.. seriously so many! Okay to the owner.. you own so many places on Coronado . You can afford to fix this. We got up and left it was just too nasty for us and not sanitary!
Best food and staff
Perfect place for breakfast lunch or dinner if you're looking for great diner food!
I love the old feel it had. Mini jukeboxes on the countertops. The Mexican Mocha was delicious as well as our pies and Cinnamon Roll sundae. My daughter had a strawberry shake and it was one of the bests she has ever had.
Good food but server dany was coughing all over it!
Great place to go when you are craving for some good breakfast of any kind and burrito.
Great staff. Great eggs and coffee. A throwback to old diners at walking distance from the beach.
Nice old school diner with good food items on the menu.
Was really looking forward to having breakfast here and ordered To-Go since I wasn’t feeling super great. They told my husband that they’d call when it was ready. After about 15 minutes he decided he’d head over there and stop by a few places to run some errands before they called. He got there about 30 minutes after we placed our order still with no call. After inquiring at the counter they rudely told him they never call and that he was wrong. He explained to her (the SAME girl he spoke to on the phone) that she had told him they’d call and she waved him off and told him he could take the food or not. He took it because at the point we were all very hungry. The food was great, even though it was cold. Disappointed in the customer service, they could’ve been much more helpful and kind.
Friendly crowd, nice servers, great breakfast burrito.
Worth the wait. Great wait staff, charming retro decor, delicious food!
This is one of the best breakfast spots. Classic diner food with a touch of Mexican inspiration. Great bottomless diner coffee. Expect to wait a bit and sit with strangers at the counter. My reccomendation is the Cha Cha Chorizo Burrito.
Good food but a bit pricey
Old time diner with the best breakfast I've had in years. Can't beat the coffee or pastries either. I keep coming back every morning of this trip.
Great food everytime. Worth the wait. The only complaint I have is the eggs over medium I ordered. Severely under cooked, as the whites were still runny. Best B&G's I have found in San Diego though!
I'm giving it 5stars for how popular it is. Always a line seems like 30minutes or more, great variety on the menu, friendly service.
Great food and service. There is a lot of food for a really good price. If your hungry and in the area I highly recommend Clayton's!
The pancakes were quite nice.
Decent but not outstanding American comfort food in the main dining room. The Mexican food stall outside is really did however. Also available outside is a coffee stand with delicious baked goods.
Good service friendly staff
Food is delicious and the service is great. Only complaint I have is how cramped the space is making it a bit inaccessible for a friend of mine.
Great food - cheerful servers, fair prices. Classic American diner ambiance with red seats and lots of nostalgic decor. Almond croissant was so tasty. As was the coke float, salad and sandwich.
Clayton's Coffee Shop is one of mine and wife's favorite places to eat in San Diego. First, Coronado Island is gorgeous and this little piece of history just adds to it all. The restaurant really takes you back in time. It is loud, cramped, fun, and positively delicious. Be prepared to wait at least 30 to 40 minutes as the restaurant is small and the waitlist is long, but it is well worth it.
Nicest waitresses ever, excellent service. On the food front, I’m a bit surprised people wait 45+ minutes - food was not great. Belgian waffle super dense / weighed 5 pounds, avocado toast w/ tomatoes & mozarella not great (dry toast, skimpy on the avocado, unripe tomatoes).
Great food, loved it. Everything was excellent. Will come back for sure
Always a nice place to come for some comfort food and a relaxed retro vibe. The jukeboxes work. Convenient location. The service is always excellent. Only downside is it can get a little crowded.
Beautiful diner with very nice Staff. Extremly good visited Food was ok for American Food. Cappuccino was very good!
Cool 50's Diner vibe (including booth jukeboxes) except with an extensive and surprizingly eclectic menu. Fair prices, 1st come-1st serve, usually crowded but with reasonably short wait times. Pick up a collectable 40's-50's period apron while you're there and you gotta try their pies and malted milk shakes...unless you're diabetic and don't mind being in a coma. And no they aren't paying me to say this, just a local fan.
Great 50's coffee shop with good service and food.
Delicious breakfast! I loved the waffles with strawberries and the coffee. Great atmosphere and nice staff!!!
Cool local hangout! They have a walk up window that opens up early to get your coffee fix. I think they open at 5AM. They have a island in the center with seating all around it.
Really enjoyed our first visit here. Went with the basics scrambled eggs, bacon, multigrain toast and fresh fruit in place of the home fries.in addition, tried the French toast. They make it with challah bread. The staff were all great with plenty of smiles. This location does not have the flexibility for large parties as the tables can not be moved. The thing that stood out was that they have homemade HOT sausage patties. It definitely had a kick.
Service was really nice. The food was good just need bait of improvement in the pie I got which was the pie of the day which was a bit cold
Omg so cute and the food is so good
Great food, atmosphere, and staff. I had the irish omelet and it was delicious! They also have a takeout window you can walk up to and order quickly.
Quaint 50's style coffee shop. Very hot inside and unbearable when noisy children sit in the next booth. The food was ok and reasonably priced, especially for Coronado Island.
This place took me back to Happy Days I kept looking to see The Fonz walking in
Fantastic and quick service, great coffee. Came here on a Tuesday at 10:30 and the place was packed which is always a good sign.
Usually I give this place 5 stars, but the service was so terrible the last time that I have to give it 3. We sat for over 20 minutes before someone took our coffee order then even longer for a different person to take our food order. Same issue when paying the bill. The food was good but once the novelty of eating at this classic restaurant wears off you realize there are plenty of places to eat breakfast where you don't have to wait an hour to be seated and will sit in a comfortable, open environment opposed to the cramped tight seats of this dinner.
Excellent Breakfast. Great classic dinner theme. The place is small, had a 30 minute wait on a Tuesday, but definitely worth the wait.
Great food and quick service. The Coronado burrito was the best burrito I've ever had
Awesome old school diner
Too much water in coffee(white chocolate mocha and classic latte). Chai latte was good
Always busy and the wait was about 30 minutes, but well worth the it because the food is always great!
Fabulous eats for a great price in a historic coffee shop. Totally joyful!
Good food, coffee and fast service. Nice old fashioned diner atmosphere. Staff is friendly and attentive, we ordered the bagel sandwich and the BLTA. They were delicious! We’re definitely coming back.
Great food great service great place a must in Coronado
Fly's, Fly's, Fly's -- Terrible, everyone was sitting and shooing fly.s away from their Food - INDOORS YET - Fly's Spoiled the Lunch. Otherwise food OK, service OK BUT Fly's ruined it All - Exterior Doors were wide open..Shame on Clayton's.
Mom and I enjoy going here to eat. Clean, old fashion, upbeat environment, great food and prices. One of the last gems in Coronado!
Sunday banana French toast is amazing! Old diner vibes
So fun! We love this place and go here every time we are in Coronado. Great food and fun atmosphere.
Pretty good breakfast spot on the Island but the food is good not great in my opinion. Think traditional diner food at Coronado prices
This diner is awesome. Decor is like going back in time complete with juke boxes on the tables and a step up breakfast bar seating. There’s an order window to the sidewalk for walk up traffic and they’re open very early.
Lots of character, great service and delicious food. Huge menu selections and daily specials.
Busy most mornings, especially weekends. Food, service, and atmosphere make it well worth the wait.
very cute little dinner with great staff. food is good but definitely over priced.
Good service. Food is fine. Ours was a little cold but the management offered a discount so that’s cool. Busy spot.
When there's a wait, it's worth every minute of it! Incredibly delicious!
Great food, great service
Great malts, burger, ribs! Service fantastic.
Great food, love the old school diner feel.
Great food!..Great Service!!..Fun atmosphere!
Super cute diner with amazing food! I had the special, banana bread french toast, and it was fantastic. In the past I've had the acaii bowl from their "walk up" and it was also amazing. If you want a seat make sure to make a reservation! For parking I recommend the free street parking by the beach and walking here.
Really great service of American comfort food and juke boxes with music to match!
Awesome atmosphere, tasty food and great service!
Overrated tourist trap. The lines are extremely long on weekend mornings and everyday during the warm seasons. This place is great for donuts and coffee but the food is kinda overpriced and below average. It is greasy. If you want average food try their sister resturant around the corner, clayton's mexican food where the burritos are large and in charge. Also, better breakfast food for a better price is just down the street a few blocks, Day and Night cafe.
Found this place from a friend who recommended it, best decision. Love their food especially the Coronado burrito.
Great service and lots of good options.
Good old fashioned diner, good cup of joe.
It's like stepping back in time! The atmosphere and decor bring back memories! The food was excellent and the service exceptional, especially for the amount of people who come there to eat! Definitely would go back!
Great breakfast and loved getting coffee around the side.
Delicious Cha cha chorizo burrito, but who doesn't live chorizo. Always seems to be a crowd trying to get some good food in this down home classic diner
We went for breakfast on Saturday. There was a half hour wait. Good retro feel for a diner. Good customer service. Not a lot of options for vegetarians who don't eat egg. We had to end up having the basic avocado toast - my husband liked it a lot. And I ended up with a breakfast burrito with a few bell peppers. it was fine, not extraordinary. Their coffee was good enough. The decor is good and gives an old vibe but food was normal. As I mentioned if you eat eggs you have a wider variety. Good place
10 Stars! Clayton’s is the ideal corner breakfast spot. The cozy environment, amazing staff, and flat out perfect food make it a must. There are not a lot of seats, but the workers hustle like no place else, so turnover is quick and we had very little wait time despite the line outside. The breakfast menu is chock full of so many options that everyone is sure to find something yummy. The carnitas and chorozo hash is just plain ridiculous good. Perfect balance of ingredients and just the right amount of food. The staff is friendly and attentive - sitting at the counter, my coffee was never less than half full. Be prepared to be tempted by a display of fresh baked pies and other treats, and bring a big appetite. I haven’t yet tried it, but the fried chicken and waffles looks delicious. They open at 6am daily, but if you just want coffee, they have a walk up window on the side that opens at 5am - this also lets you skip the dining line if you just want to grab a cup and go.
Great little old fashion dinner counter and some booths. Excellent coffee...
Excellent service. I really liked the coffe. Recommend the Apple pie with ice cream
Great vintage atmosphere. Delicious BLT. What could make it better? If the jukebox was working.
The best diner I've tried. The portions are huge, and the desserts are unique and everything tastes better than you'd expect. they have daily specials so there's always something new to try.
I would give this place 5 stars for delicious food, but the wait was ridiculous I think they forgot us. And then our son's breakfast came out 10 minutes before the rest of our table. The food was good, but the other part of the experience was not as enjoyable.
Very good food and service!
This is such a great little spot for breakfast. My husband and I loved the community atmosphere, the kind and prompt service, and the food was delicious, too!
We came with 6 and the staff was super helpful to find us a space. It was a busy morning. The food was delicious! Thank you!
I loved this lil place. I like a place with charm and history. The servers were adorable and did a great job. All the delicious pastries were tempting. The juke box was so fun. I enjoyed my food. No complaints just what you expect.
Had a great breakfast here and was able to order a mostly healthy option! I got some vegetables with the green goddess eggs Benedict and it was just amazing! They were happy to cater to my requests and it was much appreciated.
Cool venue. The food was delicious. The service was good. There wait was a bit long, so be prepared for a little wait. The place is sort of crammed in there tight. The coffee was really good. This will definitely be the staple Coronado breakfast and brunch place to go to for me.
Food was okay, would rather eat somewhere else. Servers were rude, had to call them to get our order. 1/3 of the hashbrown was burnt. It took about 30 mins to get our food and the excuse was that the “steak takes long to cook” but in reality i heard our order come out but had a mistake and was sent back, i’d rather be told the truth than be told a lie in a rude way and tone. They talk to you like you’re stupid and dont understand them. I believe they’re racist cause they seem to treat other customers better, but thats just my opinion
Waitresses wear vintage type aprons in all sorts of patterns, straight out of the 1940's
Always awesome food and service!
I went to the outside window for coffee and was pleasantly surprised. I’m from out of town and have been trying different coffee shops out, this has been my favorite. I have yet to have a bad coffee anywhere but this place really stood out to be as being good. I would highly recommend it. The donut selection was fun and the donuts were fluffy and fresh!
Good coffee, friendly service. I stopped by here twice while on a trip, both times walking up to the sidewalk counter and getting my morning coffee that way. Service was quick and easy, and there coffee was great. I'd love to come back sometime and have a meal here!
Very good breakfast place. Small, busy, but very much part of the Coronado local flavor. If you're looking for something other than Denny's or IHOP, give this place a try. The milkshakes are awesome, except they only have these extremely thin straws that make it difficult to drink. The eggs Benedict was very good and the service was super friendly. The diner itself looks very historic, very popular, be prepared for a wait.
Fantastic unbelievable breakfast I've had in a long time it's a must do when you're on the island you'll never be disappointed everything was perfect
Always busy in the summer, but always good service. No air conditioning, but they do their best with fans with minimal excess space. Love the home town feel and old time atmosphere. Tasty home cooking; so far I haven't ordered anything I haven't liked.
Highly recommend! We have only been in Coronado for a few days, and we have already been here twice!! They have a lot of options for those who are vegetarians! I recommend the veggie croissant sandwich! SO GOOD! My husband had the biscuits and gravy and loved that too! The home fries were pretty basic and nothing to rave about. Smoothie was really good! Staff was nice as well! We recommend the breakfast food over the lunch food, just because breakfast is so delicious.
Service was great, though food was dry, very bland. Ordered spaghetti and meatballs and hamburger with cheese. Though will be back to try something different when in town. Small diner, cute and everyone was friendly.
Cute decor in a hot spot. Unfortunately that's where the compliments end. The food wasn't bad, it just didn't stand out. I had the chicken fried steak sandwich. Which is actually open faced... making it a platter... Labels aside, the meal was a little dry, lacking enough sausage gravy to cover all of my biscuit. Service was good and they seemed to have a good selection of pastries, coffee was nothing to brag about.
Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the burgers were the real deal! Hard to find a real 1/3 lb burger. Service was great too! My server forgot my drink and pretty much all about us, but a different server came thru for us all the way! Admire your work! Thanks
A must! Favorite place on the island to eat a delicious meal.
Nice diner food. I arrived in the late side and not interested in a big meal. They serve breakfast all day and that definitely hit the spot. Good eggs but I especially enjoyed their bacon and home fries. Very quick service and friendly staff. It look as if many of the other patrons were there for their traditional dinner offerings such as meat loaf. Looked good .
Great food with a 50s atmosphere
This place is a MUST once if you’re in the mood for a “diner” experience. They serve basic Americana breakfast. No special or unique dishes. No variety of coffees. No alcohol available. There is usually a line waiting-which more often than not is comprised of tourists. Parties larger than 5 need not waste their time, this location is tiny and incapable of moving tables around to accommodate large parties
Great food at a great price! We were visiting Coronado and went here for breakfast. What a cool place. We loved the atmosphere, (a vintage diner). The wait staff was friendly and quick, especially with the coffee refills. Can't wait to come back here again the next time we're in Coronado.
Fun atmosphere, great employees. I decided on all day breakfast because it seemed like it was their specialty, I got the veggie scramble and was disappointed, it was dry and the veggies were to small. My daughter had one of the best looking cheeseburgers I have ever seen and a cherry black forest brownie shake that was out of this world
Great diner. Easy location to find. We were seated promptly, and it seems that outside of the weekend it's easy to get a table here. (On the weekend there were so many people waiting we didn't bother). Food was exactly like you'd expect for a diner. Large portions, cooked fresh, served quickly and with a smile.
Great food, friendly service. Love the old diner/soda fountain feel. Breakfast burritos were delicious!
Mexican mocha was rather flavorless and not even lukewarm! Again. How does one make a lukewarm mocha?!? If you want to come here, it's only because people say it's good... like they've talked themselves into liking this place. Which for some, that's what they actually want. But for quality of any kind, it's not here.
Pleasant service. Cuban panini was flavorful but a bit dry. Appreciated the free refill on my drink and sidewalk seating.
Awesome place. Great food!
Very cosy and nice. Friendly staff and delicious food.
There food was the best! All the waitresses and the hostess was super sweet. I will definitely be coming back here
The food was wonderful. The atmosphere was nice.
Wow! Breakfast and brunch galore! Make sure you fast like 16 hours or share a meal!
Staff so friendly. Awesome food! The portions are big. The French toast can be shared ! Highly recommend.
a constant favorite! always good old fashioned diner food, coffee and experience. get there early on the weekends to avoid a lengthy wait! we go there nearly every time we are on the island.
Amazing food, great atmosphere!
Good food very tight isles great atmosphere.
Very welcoming and friendly staff. It's fcfs seating, we just sat at the bar. Food came out quickly and tasted great! The apple pie was amazing and homemade!
Can't beat banana bread french toast which is only served on Sundays. Great service, chill spot and inexpensive. I'd go back!
The chila quieles were sooo good and the mimosas were huge and delicious.
Very nice place, good food, but reasonably busy. It's also very noisy and difficult to hear your tablemate speak.
Came for lunch. Looked like breakfast was probably their specialty. Milkshake was good.
Its alright, nothing spectacular. The service is alright. The food basic. A little over priced for what you get.
Warm and friendly staff serves up incredible food. Try the cinnamon roll!!!!
There is a lot of different items on the menu, got my food pretty fast and breakfast is available all day..
Atmosphere, staff and food are outstanding! My daughter lives in Los Angeles & I brought her here for a celebration meal and it's now it's our fav place to eat in Coronado! In San Diego even! The nostalgic decor really add to the flavor of the diner! Oh and we loved the old jukebox!!!
It’s a classic! Only complaint is the wait time during the tourist seasons
Totally fun diner. Classic breakfast items. Great with friends and family. Or take a seat at the counter and meet someone new.
Veteran owned, delicious coffee, great decor, plenty of starting inside and out
Had dinner here and our first time and loved it! Have visited other restaurants and paid too much money for decent and ok food but after Clayton's, we'll come back here! Food was great and staff was welcoming and service was spot on even with a big crowd.
