Delicious food!
Great little spot for lunch in downtown Madison. Excellent refined country cuisine & top notch service. Can't wait to come back
Great food atmosphere and service. Looking forward to having dinner there soon now that they will be open evenings
Fun place to eat. Food is good but only open for lunch
Great food and service.
Tried Main Street Cafe Madison for date night dinner. The Peanut butter pie is delicious, the Mac&cheese was really good BUT....the steaks wasn't well done like I ordered, and the vegetables didn't have any seasoning. I might try them again but I'll order something different next time.
Nice atmosphere. Food was good.
Blackened Ribeye was very good and the waitress was very prompt and nice to deal with.
One of my fav places to enjoy with my family! I come from Tacoma WA to get the mushroom soup!
It's an old jail right next to the railroad tracks in historic downtown Madison. Poulet is very impressive. Strawberry pretzel dessert is a great finisher. After you eat there, stop across the street and meet the nice folks at the gourmet popcorn shop!
Great soups, warm.athmoshpere....dishes need some " presentation"especially the salads
First time to eat here. Good size portions. Food was delicious
Love this place. Ran from an old jailhouse where the history can still be seen. They have outdoor seating which is a plus. Quick service and a very friendly staff. The food is excellent! You get more than you can bargain for if you get the poulet de normandie dish.
Service was great. Food was good. I had the Georgia Chicken and the menu didn’t state that the chicken was lightly battered and fried (my sis-in-law ordered it as well and we were both surprised to find that it was). Also they aren’t very toddler friendly. My 3-year old nephew was being quiet and coloring. Shortly before he had been playing with a couple of the sugar and sweetener packs (not opening them or getting them wet, or playing with the container, just the packets.)The hostess came over and took them all away handing him a couple of crayons and said sternly, “ I’ll take those, you color in your book. It was one we brought, luckily it was a coloring book. I understand she didn’t want him to break anything or destroy all the packets, but she could have been a lot nicer about it. Basically she reprimanded my nephew, which was not appreciated.
Great and unique food. Now open for dinner, too. Neat atmosphere in the old Madison jail.
A lovely little locally owned restaurant. Love the patio. The food & service are both good & something on the menu for most.
Excellent food!!
Service was the best and the food was better than that!!! Excellent and one of my most favorite restaurants!!!
One of the best places for a meal in the area that very few people know about. Make sure you check out the two holding cells inside but make sure you sit outside at lunch so you can watch the train go by
Well delicate place too eat The food was awesome and the services were awesome. WILL COME BACK AGAIN VERY FRIENDLY STAFF WELL DONE MAIN STREET CAFE
Fun local restaurant in a converted jail. Good food. Open 11 AM - 2 PM serving Southern Style home cooking.
Love it here! Staff is wonderful and food is always consistently great! Prices are unbelievable as well! Will always come back!
Great place
Good food friendly personnel. Glad they now open for dinner.
Food here is always great! The atmosphere is really nice, restaurant is always clean. The food consistently tastes good.. It's never been bad. The servers are always personable and friendly. It's my mom's favorite place to eat!
Home style food with a good variety and different specials every day. Great lunch spot.
My wife and I finally got to go to Main Street Cafe for lunch. Because they are only open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., it has been difficult for us to be able to get in when we are both off. We were so glad we had the opportunity to go to eat there. The food is excellent, the service is very friendly, it did not take long at all for us to get our appetizers or our main course. They only serve lunch because they are open for such limited hours, which is a shame because their food is excellent. The most expensive items are only $10.95. My wife had the grilled ribeye main course, and I had the Georgia chicken. Both of them were incredibly tasty, very tender, and extremely feeling. We also had a cup of clam bisque each, and tried their fried avocado slices because we had heard so much about them. There was no wait, no issue getting our food quickly, and the service was very friendly and speedy. We definitely plan on going back, and would recommend it to anyone.
Great bistro food. Love the poulet. Great patio, just be prepared for a train to come whizzing by.
Salad was good and worth the money.
This place is great
1st time to eat here. I was pleasantly surprised. Had the grilled-blackened tilapia fish with mango salsa (YUM)! Came around 11:40 am with no wait! Will definitely be back!
Greatest place to eat lunch in Madison county. Food is terrific and the staff is very friendly...
Came for our anniversary dinner. The Caeser Salad had been sitting in dressing so long it was soggy, steak was over cooked and baked potato was cold. Very disappointed
Love the atmosphere and the food!
Great small town restaurant. Very pleasant atmosphere.
Attended a private party there. The food was great, the service was great, the atmosphere is great. Because it is in the old train station in downtown Madison, it provides a unique experience in the atmosphere. Several smaller rooms, plus outdoor dining. They will definitely see me again. Perfect if you are looking for an organic dining experience and not the same old chain dining experience.
Nice locally owned restaurant and has been the anchor of downtown Madison for a long time.
Such good , home cooked food. Old fashioned atmosphere with friendly, wonderful service!
The grouper is my favorite meal there but everything is good. For dessert the strawberry pretzel salad is the best I ever had.
Good Casual lunch spot. I come here frequently with friend from work. It's an interesting local color place - I think of it as a very traditional style "Deep South" luncheon spot for the doctor's wives to meet. I've been here when the red hats roll in and it's tons of fun to watch. The food is good but unique - how many restaurants feature casseroles on their menu? You can also do more luncheon style things like quiche and salads. Having said that there's plenty for more hearty appetites like a grilled ribeye steak on special for 11$. The place is located in a renovated jail - you can eat at a table in a jail cell... There's also my favorite - some very nice, pleasant outside seating. Only open at lunch.
My wife took me to this cafe for my birthday. The atmosphere is really special, the food was spectacular, and prices are reasonable. The owners obviously really care about the customers experience. For all these reasons there is usually a line, even at lunch. This is not fast food. It is perfect for special occasions.
Main Street Cafe is an old fashion Southern charm. Joseph has been our server regularly and each time we are met with the utmost hospitality. The food is incredible whether you're craving a lighter fare or something a little more for dinner - you're guaranteed to find the perfect dish for the occasion! The ambience is incredible and a great place to gather the girls, or host some out of town guests. The superb service, Tammy and her friendly staff, on top of the delicious food, is what keeps us coming back.
I was very impressed with dinner. The food and the service was wonderful in the atmosphere was very soothing. My first time to have dinner here and I was very impressed. I highly recommend Main Street for a nice dinner.
It is a great place to eat. Great atmosphere and really good food. Worth the trip.
Outstanding...had the Salmon with sauteed spinach...will definitely be returning. Fantastic food, with world class service at a fair price
Great food no matter what selection!!
Great value and loved the ambiance. Being honest, the food wasn't amazing, but large portions and very affordable. I still enjoyed my meal and it was worth the money overall. My son was disappointed with the ravioli and I brought it home and I as well was disappointed. The stuffed pork loin was good and meatloaf was mediocre. The roasted red pepper and gouda soup tasted like mushrooms, the waitress even agreed. Weirded me out a little. It was okay, but not what I was expecting.
Outstanding food at an extremely reasonable price. We went with a group of 4 who all wanted something different and everyone left perfectly happy! A must go if you're traveling through our simply have never been!
Love the building they are in the historical district of Madison plus the food is outstanding @@@ Different dishes daily plus all the old favorites @@ Service is great too !@
We arrived for lunch on a recent Friday just as the doors opened. We have dined there numerous times over the years and even when they were in Decatur and always had wonderful experiences. Yeast rolls that were always hot and fluffy were now cold and seemed as though they were day old. The crunchy chicken casserole was warm enough but just did not seem freshly prepared. The side vegetable was fine. The spaghetti seemed somewhat bland. The Mississippi Mud cake was great and our server A+ as she always has been.
Delivers on all its promises. Good blackened chicken sandwich, that's going to be a regular one for me.
The food is absolutely delicious. You simply must eat lunch or dinner in one of their jail cells! ;)
The food was awful! The fettuccine noodles were over cooked and the sauce had to be store bought and wasn't good. The chicken wrap was bland and had too much store bought salsa on top, gross! We really wanted the strawberry pretzel salad for dessert but they were out.
Food is excellent. Service is great. Price is Right. Highly recommend
Food was good. Service great. Sound of train roaring by was awesome
The atmosphere of the old jail turned into a restaurant is very cool. The food is true southern comfort food (and their fried pickles are some of the best I've ever had!)
Amazing food and service. The sea bass and lemon infused rice were delicious. From a varied selecting of sides, the roasted potatoes and sauteed spinach were great. Wish I could give it more stars.
My fave place in Madison! You can't go wrong with the grouper, squash casserole, sweet potato fries and of course, their famous strawberry pretzel salad.
I visited at lunch time and it was very crowded. There was a brief wait before being seated, nothing to complain about. The food was good, not great. They have great prices and a nice location with history which is what prompted me to visit. The best thing about my meal was dessert. The Coca-Cola cake was rich, moist and delicious. If I return it would be to try the strawberry pretzel salad which I heard was really good.
Great warm place in charming area.
Awesome little spot to eat, especially if you're from out of town like I was! The food and service were both excellent.
Great lunch, and kids menu was enjoyed!
Great food. Home cooked. But a little crowded. Worth the wait
My wife and I found this place to be just fine for it's pricing. Our waitress was pleasant, friendly and on top with the service. Our food was excellent, a special surprise for us. We had transmission failure in our auto and didn't expect to find a delightful little place like this close to our hotel. They close in the early afternoon and are fully packed shortly after noon time. A popular local establishment and as I mentioned a pleasant surprise for us..We will gladly return.
Great atmosphere and the Peach Chicken was awesome!
I googled places to eat and this place sounded interesting. It seems to be very popular, and I had to wait a little while for a table. I spoke with another customer who was waiting, and she recommended some menu items and said that she and her husband have been there a lot. The staff was friendly and attentive, but I was not impressed with the food. It all sounds scrumptious on the printed page, but what I ordered was mediocre in real life. The fried green tomatoes were in a heavy, dark batter and were topped with relish. Two strikes against those. The chicken casserole was more like chicken a la king, and wasn't a good version of that. Strike three. I thought the homemade yeast roll might save the day, but it was mediocre as well. I enjoyed walking down the historic little street and visiting a couple of shops. Maybe it was a bad day in the kitchen, but nothing about the cafe food made me want to return. It seems to me that they need a southern chef who has some tried and true southern recipes for fried green tomatoes, chicken casserole, and yeast rolls that melt in your mouth.
It's delicious and the food is just right. Taking your family here for brunch is a perfect plan.
Not only is the food very tasty, but the wait staff are very nice and helpful.
Great food and service.
Great food, fabulous servers
Tasty food, good atmosphere, quick service, no junk food in menu
Excellent place to eat. Great food and service. Order was quick and good portions.
Good food, great servers
Cool local restaurant! It's in the old Jail in downtown Madison. They always have local specials and they're now open for dinner some days. I've never had a bad meal here, but the Strawberry Pretzel Salad is my favorite! Super courteous staff as well.
Why go anywhere else when this place is there for you? Marquita is the very best of servers.
Good food and service.
Always good!!
Got there Saturday around 11:30. Parked in handicapped spot on Main Street. Easy roll over to their door. Maybe 6 or so tables empty, so we were seated immediately. Hostess moved a chair, so my wheelchair had a spot at table. Gentleman was our waiter. Good sense of humor, but did not hover. Each meal ordered was very good. Side veggies, salads, etc all good. Had guests from Birmingham, they travel a lot to many locations. They said how good everything was. Said they want to come here again when they return in September. Wife and I glad they are now open at night. Will be back.
Nice location in a cozy main street shopping area. Excellent service and food. Both manager and waitress were attentive. Good quality ingredient. Well worth a stop (and drop by Old Black Bear brewery down the street afterwards).
The Chicken Salad Plate was absolutely wonderful and the "Frozen Arctic Salad" that accompanies it is a positively divine creation of raspberries and cream cheese drizzled with an orange cream sauce and topped with a cherry. You simply MUST try it!
Pretzel salad is great. Be sure to ask for the cream cheese version! Otherwise you'll just get pretzels and jello.
My first time here and I am smitten. Wonderful food, nice atmosphere, and reasonable prices. My co worker ordered the Chicken Salad, which I thought deserved a photo. I had the Salmon salad, which was cooked perfectly. So often Salmon is over cooked, not here!
Large portions, fine food and great service. We enjoyed it all!
My first time to eat here and loved it! We had grilled tilapia with green beans and mashed potatoes...spinach artichoke quiche and fried green tomatoes. Everything was delicious and very reasonably priced. Lots of good desserts are also offered. Cafe used to be an old jailhouse so you can see one of the jail cells(with dining table inside) and handcuffs in pictures. There's also lots of shops on the street to visit.
Really enjoyed the Grilled Salmon Salad. Wish I had gotten the Pretzel Salad to go. Good service and quick enough for lunch.
Loved it! Best service ever! The owner is awesome. Looking forward to going back very soon.
Good food, even better service. Looking forward to going back.
Enjoyed having a Friday evening DINNER al fresco! Lovely to have the option for Main Street Cafe for dinner Wednesday - Saturday now. And a spot to dine outside. The stuffed chicken of the day was delicious and the filet mignon was as well. Very reasonably priced for such a tasty meal.
Fantastic atmosphere and food. Will definitely come back.
Welcoming! Excellent service! Delicious food! I've been going for years and have never been disappointed.
Main Street Cafe is not a bad lunch spot. The prices are really reasonable for the portions. However, I've never had my socks knocked off by the taste. The main reason I go there is it is located between 3 pokestops for the Pokemon go game. That is prime real estate right there.
Great place, the owner is crabby but the food more than makes up for her. It's also a Pokéstop so there's that.
Awesome place a must eat at !
Been to dinner twice in the last week. Attentive wait staff and yummy food. It’s a nice little place to eat.
A nice, relaxing spot for American eats in downtown near the tracks. I enjoyed my food, although the steak was a little overcooked for my preferences, however not too much either way. The rest of the food was very good, well seasoned, and with great dessert. The service was also quite good.
Talk about a trip back in time... This place is told to be one of the first if not THE first courthouse of Madison County. Still has the old jail cells with bars. Awesome building. I swear you can feel the history in this place. Tortured souls have marked this building on some other level... The food and the server's are phenomenal. The variety of dishes available on the menu boggles the mind. The folks working here will do their best to ensure you have a good visit. It's only open a few hours each day, so plan your trip. Make it a point to go visit this place.
The ambience and surrounding areas.
Great food even better service
The VERY BEST LUNCH PLACE in N Alabama. Food & service & setting cannot be beat.
Handicap accessible but NOT HANDICAP FRIENDLY! Both the manager and the waitress went out of their way to tell me how much in the way the walkers were. Food was good, but being rushed out (3 people still eating but checks were given) when there were still empty tables was not professional. My visitors never want to come back!
Excellent service and food. Great business meeting place. Awesome for couple(s) place for dinner.
It was like eating a meal from my late grandmother who's forte was yeast rolls and southern cooking. Tea is very sweet so had to get half and half. Staff is friendly and quick to help you. Place gets so busy it reminded me of being at the DMV but a lot louder with all the conversation.
I liked the history. An old jail house turned restaurant. The lunch special with the ribeye steak was outstanding. I met the owner, very pleasant lady.
SO LOVED this place. It is located inside the old jail, too!
Love having lunch here! So glad y'all will be opening for dinner this month
I loved the ravioli and the dessert was delicious. The service was great and all of us liked it. The decor was good to. I absolutely love the honey mustard, can you give me the recipe?
This is an awesome little cafe! The staff are friendly, and the atmosphere is great. The cafe is in an old jail building in the heart of the historic district of Madison. If you're like me and enjoy history, you'll enjoy not only eating here but checking out some of the scenery outside when you're done. The food is excellent. I've had several different items here and have been very impressed with every one. Be sure to get a piece of the strawberry pretzel dessert after lunch as well (though I recommend splitting it with someone, as it's fairly large)!
A little pricey but food was really good and portion size was great.
Generous portions. The menu looked good but both hubby and I picked items off the daily specials list (which was not small!). Everything tasted great and was cooked fairly fast considering the homestyle nature. Maybe next time we'll leave room for dessert, it looked great! There was a small wait when we showed up at 1230 on a weekday so I imagine it's pretty packed on weekends and the typical lunch hour.
Great food and atmosphere! Food is always great. Their daily specials always take great.
Ask for Jordan....he's great! Food is always fantastic!
Great place for lunch. Food is really good
Great food with downtown flair.
Fruited tea...both the hot one in the winter and the cold one in the summer...yum!
Great service, good food!
Old jail house turned restaurant. Great unique dishes made from scratch (from the main course to the sides), not that warmed up canned food you get from other places. Pretzel salad is the best, can't go here without trying the pretzel salad! Also if your group is small you can eat in a jail cell!
Very good salmon salad!
OMG delicious! Can't wait to go back!!!
Great place for lunch. Food always delicious and reasonably priced!!
Good food and service, small dinning area so get there early for lunch to get a table
Ok place to eat. Could use a little more flavor in the food..but just ok to me. Not bad!
Excellent business luncheon! Table was reserved as expected, restaurant was very clean and neat, wait staff were very friendly and attentive. Food was excellent, couldn't ask for a better experience! If you have not had lunch or dinner here, you really must try it. It is busy for lunch but there is good reason!
It is an upscale place. The food is higher quality than normal. A bit above average on the prices too.
Had lunch here before, but this was our first time for dinner. Excellent summer menu choices, had the blood orange martini to start and it was top-notch. I had stuffed chicken which was cooked to perfection, and my wife got the lemon shrimp linguine (and she is picky about shrimp) and she raved about it. The server was Tim who is always pleasant and makes sure everything is correct. Can't beat Main Street for a first-class meal, every time.
First and last time I'll be going there. Staff was fine, atmosphere was fine, food was mediocre...at best.
Unique little cafe in downtown Madison.
Great food and wonder favor
The reason I love this place is the history, the kind and patient waitstaff, and the ambiance. The food is decent Southern lunch food. I think everyone needs to go here from time to time. It's always filled with families and Southerners from all walks of life. The decor is beautiful. It's just very classy. It's hard to describe.
Food is always good! Service is great and friendly!
We came here for the first time for a rehearsal dinner. The food was amazing! I got the chicken cordon blu. The wait staff handled our big group like a pro.
Best thing about this restaurant is the Strawberry Pretzel Salad. We had a group of 8 and were told we could make reservations since they are always packed. We made reservations two days in advance and still had to wait over 30 minutes. The owner said she could not afford to hold the room for us. That's understandable but the bottom line is there is really no need to make reservations unless you plan to be there right when it opens.
Always worth the wait!
Great service and really good food!
Great food and comfortable, classic atmosphere with a lot of history surrounding the building. Great variety of entrees. Cheesy meatloaf is a new favorite.
I really enjoyed Main Street Cafe. It's a quaint small town cafe situated next to an operating railroad line. The food and service was excellent and prices were moderate. I highly recommend it.
Just stopped in for dessert but it was fantastic. The atmosphere was really neat and the setting is very unique and interesting. My wife, you has been there a couple of times for lunch says the food is excellent as well!
Wonderful food, as always! Nice to meet you, Tammy!
Great place for meat and 3
I always look forward to eatting here, but even more so On Fridays when one of their specials is Grouper!! Its all ways wonderful. PS The staff is always warm and friendly, yet focused on getting all orders correct!!
Such a great lunch spot. Oriental chicken salad is my fav! Do drop in!
The new owners are trying to modernize things a bit. They recently added dinner service. My wife and I enjoyed our evening meal there. The sauteed vegetables were the highlight of my blackened Sea Bass dinner. The sea bass was not as good as the vegetables, but a little melted butter made it delicious. My wife enjoyed the pork medallions. The in house salad dressings are good. I think a focus on a more liberal use of sauces would benefit the proteins. Service could be improved with a team oriented approach. Dripping condensation from iced drinks is annoying as they drip on your clothes. Some drink naptkins on the plexiglas table tops would be appreciated, especially at this price point. We look forward to future visits, and hope the "southern cooking" approach doesn't loose prominence.
Excellent meal and service. Went with friends for a birthday and ate lunch in jail!!! It was fun! 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Excellent food and service. Great historical location. Lovely pm lunch
Its a shame they are not open for dinner because the food was absolutely wonderful!!! This will be my new place to eat lunch! The staff was clean and friendly and the place was clean and decorated nicely. Good job!
Great place.
Amazing chicken salad croissant sandwich!
Best little cafe, the food is cooked to order. The Menu is not your normal menu. Their Daily specials are usually good. So friendly, Service is Exceptional. ❤
Good food good service good atmosphere
Good food and atmosphere!
Great Restaurant! Love their Meatloaf, their Grouper, and their Poulet! Strawberry Pretzel Salad is great too!
I had the pasta with chicken. It was very good. The building still has some of the bars in the windows from when it was a rail way / jail from back in the day. The outside section is nice. They have fans and a water mister if you plan to eat out there in the heat.
Signed up for the Valentines Day dinner after spotting this place on line. Great historic location in original downtown Madison, Al. with old shops and a train track out back. Food was very good, service friendly. Very reasonably priced. They are normally open only for lunch.
Amazing restaurant, friendly staff. Great place but hours are very limited
Quaint diner in Madison's cute little "downtown". Dine inside or outside in good weather. The meatloaf with cheese and marinara was delicious. It came with sides of garlic mashed potatoes and perfectly seasoned green beans. My daughter loved the fettuccine Alfredo with grilled chicken. The portions are large without totally knocking you into a food coma, and decently priced. The sweet tea actually tastes like...tea. Yum. Real southern sweet tea where the real tea flavor and sugary goodness stands out. It's harder to find than you might think. Well, you can find it here. Service was really friendly and relaxed and the drinks were refilled at the right moment without us having to slurp the bottom of the glasses.
Awesome food great place it's a must go!
Stopped by for lunch. Terrific historical site in old Town Hall. Home cooked style food. The cheesy meatloaf was rated as very good by the group. Had the cold seafood salad plate, a very good alternative to the usual burgers and such. Certainly going back.
Outstanding service! Everything on the menu is delicious! And the desserts are to die for!
Food and service was great.
