For quite some time, I'd been considering visiting a chiropractor for a check-up. My intent for scheduling an appointment was to ascertain whether the frame of my body was properly aligned. I'm a runner and, as of late, I've been logging many miles - especially since my high school/college days. Coupled with occasional bouts of weight training at the gym, it's fair to say my body has taken quite the beating over the last 29 years. However, with so many practices available in the Anchorage area, I didn't know where to start.
My brother mentioned a few places and recommended I give 'em a shot. Instead, I opted to conduct my own research. I wanted to find a place myself of which I believed possessed the basics: qualified practitioners, clean facility, positive reviews from current/existing patients, personalized and affordable care. After some research using my healthcare provider's list of in-network chiropractic offices, I discovered Balanced Health Chiropractic (BHC). Their practice was reviewed 10 times, all of which were glowing, positive, and rated 5-stars. The reviews highlighted the passionate and knowledgeable licensed practitioners including the pristine and inviting facility. Also, Google maps conveniently pointed out that BHC was less than two miles from my home. So, I decided to give it a shot.
As a quick side note: reviews can often be iffy. Meaning, they can be misleading. Experiences are subjective. A place that is well-reviewed can end up in a bad experience and a place that is negatively reviewed can result in a wonderful experience. With that said, I'm very happy to report BHC lived up to is reputation and then some.
From start to finish, my experience was easy, stress-free, highly-informative, educational and relaxing. As soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted by the practice's receptionist (I don't remember her name). Notwithstanding, the young woman made me feel invited and her superb customer service set the tone for the remainder of my visit. She checked me in, prompted me to complete their practice's required paperwork, took my information (license and health insurance card) and proceeded to welcome to BHC. She informed me that Dr. Jennifer Lovdahl would be out shortly and then invited me to tour the practice since I was a new patient. BHC, thought in a small space, is actually a big and spacious practice. The receptionist showcased the children's playroom, doTERRA products, massage/treatment rooms, and a special glass case containing an 8-year old McDonald's Happy Meal on full display in the lobby.
Yes, you heard me right...an 8-year old Happy Meal! They have the receipt to prove it including all the original wrapping/packaging. While marveling in wonder over the french fries and chicken McNuggets - which by the way were still totally intact, devoid of mold and decomposition - Dr. Jennifer walked up and introduced herself. First impression of Dr. Jennifer, her beaming warm smile. It softens and comforts you. Dr. Jennifer's smile is a subtle reminder that you're in great care. After exchanging pleasantries, she took a moment to talk with me and add further context to the 8-year Happy Meal. From then on, it was all chiropractic business.
Dr. Jennifer sat me down, went over my new patient questionnaire, spoke about her background and how she got into chiropractic medicine, articulated the mission for BHC and took time to assess my personal goals and needs for chiropractic treatment. Next, we transitioned into some simple movements, stretches, and simple exercises. Dr. Jennifer explained this helps her assess and gauge tension, knots, pains and aches which she uses as a guide to tailor a treatment plan. Afterwards, she stretched and measures the elasticity of my hip flexors and hamstrings. I found out I wasn't as flexible or elastic as I thought which - as Dr. Jennifer articulated - isn't a bad thing. Rather, it helps her focus on what needs adjusted and what I can do to maintain that adjustment. 10/10. Please visit!
