My parents have ordered out food here since I was about 8, and I still love the food despite having had it over 100 times. The fried chicken and green beans are amazing. I live in Appleton now and still occasionally make the half hour drive to pick up takeout.

We booked Van Abel's as the food caterer for our September 2018 wedding, as they came recommended by our venue. Patty was great to work with, and was very responsive to any questions or updates I had. They have a good variety of food options, and we selected the broasted chicken and tenderloin tips for our dinner, and several hot and cold options for hors d'oeuvres. The pricing was comparative to the other options we had considered. We had arranged a tasting appointment for four, and they provided many options and in good proportions. We left confidant that the food would be good at our wedding. The hors d'oeuvres went over really well. The meatballs were delicious, and by far, my favorite. We had the dinner served family style for the head and family tables, and then buffet for the other guests. Dinner was very good as well, and many guests went up for seconds of the chicken. They had proportions planned well, as we didn't have too many leftovers. We had a few meals of the leftovers following the wedding, and very little went to waste. We would highly recommend Van Abel's for catering needs.

This place is large enough that you can always get a seat and get served relatively fast. Their food quality is good - not great, but good. Their chicken is overrated and their Friday fish is underrated. Their bar drinks are also generally good.

We called to make a reservation but when we got here they said that they only put us in line for a table once we get here. So we had to wait an hour for a table that we should of had reserved. Basically they don’t do reservations. Then you wait for the food too.

My family has been visiting here for 50+ years. I remember going to many weddings here and all were wonderful. The food, especially the friend chicken, is delicious. The staff is quick and polite. They also really appreciate their history and local history. When I went to a 50th wedding Anniversary there they actually we're able to pull out a book from 50 years ago which talked about the couple's wedding reception that was there.

Food was very plentiful and delicious. I went on a recommendation from a coworker. We had 3 adults and a baby and had way more food brought to our table than we could eat. I LOVED the broasted. Everyone loved the green beans, though they weren't necessarily my cup of tea. However, that didn't ruin my experience at all.

Overall unimpressed. Bloody Mary was only made with tomato juice and vodka. Too much breading on the perch and shrimp. Pike had no flavor, originally ordered broiled and sent it back for pan fried and still disliked it.

My husband and I hired Van Abel's to cater our wedding and they exceeded our expectations. The food was delicious, they set everything up beautifully, cleaned up, coordinated with our DJ, and offered food to our photographers. It was one of the few things I did not have to worry about at all on our wedding day. I cant express how much we appreciated being taken care of.

Dinner for three, we all got steak which was cooked perfectly. Medium well NY strip was slightly pink and seasoned well. Ample condiments, but no mushrooms on the menu. Waitress seemed friendly but rushed. Forgot my drink and one item off another plate. Otherwise 5 stars. I would recommend getting there early or calling ahead as they get busy fast.

Went here with a large group and service was good. The waitress gave us separate checks which is a rarity where I live. The service is farm style and you get whatever they are serving that day. The fried chicken was delicious and the sides were good. The fish wasn't my favorite but I'm not a fan of deep fried fish anyway.. The desserts are a selection of bars - chocolate and fruit and were my favorite. There is a large full service bar.

Best country style chicken anywhere you can get carry out but you must go in and sit down to get the full supper club experience. If you go on the weekend you may have to park out a little from the entrance due to banquet or a wedding but it is well worth it.

We have eaten here on and off over the years, but when we hired them to cater for our wedding, they made us customers for life! Patty and Diane were so helpful and friendly in the planning process. And at the event, the wait staff and food personnel went above and beyond for us and our guests! Extremely friendly, helpful and courteous. They were attentive to our needs, made a beautiful presentation, and having them cook onsite made the food even more amazing! The food was even better than when we had our taste test, and we heard nothing but compliments from our guests about them! Having them as our caterer made our wedding dinner truly memorable! They made our day special and worry free!

Van Abel's is a favorite place for family weddings. My brother not only had his reception there but he had his ceremony there as well. Their food is excellent. They remodeled the reception hall last year and it looks fantastic. I would rate 10 stars if I could.

This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. It took half an hour to get a waitress to come to the table, another 20 minutes to get salads, and after nearly an hour of waiting for our food (after 2 tables that had come in after us were almost done eating), we went to tell the manager that we were leaving. Her excuse was that a big group had ordered before us and they had to feed them first. When I asked why people who came in after us were almost done eating, she said that's the way Fridays work. The waitress came only twice in an hour and a half, and had quite a bad attitude when I mentioned how long we had been waiting to order. Not going back. Would give them a zero if I could.

Attended a small party at van abels and the menu was chicken and beef. Very surprised to find out they charge $13.95 for a meal for a 4 year old. The beef was tasteless and very dry. The bowls of three bean salad and Cole slaw had about a cup of each in them. The best part of the meal, the green beans. They charge 35 cents to cut each piece of cake.

Excellent wedding reception dinner + dancing. Its is a 30 minute drive from Appleton WI but worth it. We were guests at a large private reception dinner. Loved the chicken, fish, beans mashed potatoes, gravy. The staff at the 2nd bar in the back were very responsive to drink orders. We then danced the night away on the dance floor with family and friends.

The only negative thing I'd say is that the waitress didn't bring out all the chicken pieces included in meal, upon questioning it, she said it wasn't included - so I grabbed the menu to show her, then she said she forgot and tried to give excuses. But other than that, I'd probably go back soley for the good food.

Made reservations, but when you arrive you get put in a line with everyone and they serve you first come first serve. When I made the reservation there was no mention of the hour we would have to wait. The hostess said they always mention that when you make reservations. I said that was never mentioned to me, she then basically called me a lier and said, only she must make mistakes. I agreed. The food was okay, your average WI club food. Service was below average. Acoustics were terrible, too loud for a decent conversation. We will not be going back.

The walleye both broiled and pan fried had a ridiculous number of bones in it. The broiled shrimp and scallops were bland and boring without dipping them in the butter. The baked potato came with no fixings. On the plus side the bloody Mary's were amazing and the hot bacon dressing was perfect on a clean and tasty salad. The cost was extremely high for fish options that I didn't think were worth it. Next time I will get the chicken dinner as that is amazing every time!

So, I normally like this place but why bother even taking reservations and then give me some attitude when I’m genuinely confused as to why we have an hour wait when we had a reservation? We have done reservations here before and never had an issue so why would I think this time would be different?? Just don’t bother taking reservations on the weekends. Or tell people when they are making them that reservations are basically useless. “See, you know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation and that's really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anybody can just take them.” Yeah, it felt just like that. Weird. But, I digress, food was good as usual and so were the drinks. I’ll be back but not gonna waste time with a reservation and make sure the babysitter knows we may not make it back until the morning (it’s that busy).

It was great until I work consecutively for 6 months and working hard with a great attitude while 16 year old workers try and boss me around and wait the 20 year old Danika who basically talks behind your back and can make it awkward yet uncomfortable for you but also it motivated me until it started messing with my livelihood. Oh wait go in early tgen qrite a negative report.... Anything. Lies are always welcomed..... And bring it to a bartender or host or qhoever and guess what dinner is completely on VanAbels plus here's a gift card and server you are fired. Yup ive seen it happen. I left for myself and sanity obviously but also JoanVanAbel, amazing lady, she hired me and showed me some things and after that was always apart of the events and days night .. U call it. She has a fierce way about her which I love. Others don't. Like I say and Joan if u hear me THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF PPL IN THIS WORLD. THE ONES WITH YOU OR AGAINST YOU. The ones against you are either envies you to the ppint they bully you as in misery loves company or the person doesnt know how to take your amazing energy. Joan do something befpre ur energy is sucked dry. I bet a few employees worth in my life for they were real from day one. Had the fried cod and tenderloin. Cod was awesome, light breading, flaky and good size. Stake was a little over cooked for me. I asked medium rare and it came out medium almost well. It had some pink, but not enough for my liking. It's been a while since my family has been there. We'll be back soon.

UPDATE: (March 2018) Ate there again today with my kiddos and hubby this time. We ate so much. Our server Molly was fantastic! The food AGAIN was delicious. Still 5 stars.
