I used to work here so my opinion isn't objective.

Chris Margraf

Amazing food and service. Very cozy atmosphere with historic ambiance. Definitely worth the price. Incredibly high standard for both their food and wait staff. Very knowledgeable and it’s always good to ask for a recommendation. Amazing selection of cocktails and wine, with a great (and cheaper) late night menu to go along with the hidden-away feeling of the basement bar. Always a treat to go to C&O!

Nat Lan

Quiet restaurant. We went over restaurant week. A little overpriced and the staff was a bit rude

Kristina Roger

Nice atmosphere, great customer service, delicious food! Must to come back! Wow, absolutely incredible food experience. Steak was the best I've ever tried and lobster appetizer was melting pure flavor! AMAZING!!!

Emily Christman

Definitely one of the best restaurants in Charlottesville. Lovely atmosphere and waitstaff. We can't wait to return!

Geoff Andrews

Excellence across the board .

Peter Hedlund

Great food and a timeless, relaxing and friendly bar.

Colin Hubbard

This place is cozy, friendly and tasty. Excellent staff and food.

Anna Szostak

Hands down one of the best meals of my life. Everything was on point from the duck to the service! And every bite was even better than the last. Highly recommend!

karl helmstetter

Best place for romantic drinks after a late movie or concert. Food is great ( steak chinoise is a classic for a reason! ), and staff is always knowledgeable in what I'm eating or drinking.

Bart W Daly

Best scallops and flounder I have ever had. Very delicate flavors. (And I ate seafood 2x a day, 6days a week for 12 years). Bibb lettuce with mustard seed vinaigrette was also quite good. Chairs in downstairs dining area are very uncomfortable. This was a memorable meal.

Vasilis Tsagkalidis

Great food and amazing atmosphere. Our waiter was friendly. We ended up going pretty late (around 9pm) and at that point people started heading out, so it was nice and quiet. Worth the experience.

Shelly Stinchcomb

We went on a Wednesday night with friends. I have a complicated diet due to health issues, so I called earlier in the day to make sure this wouldn't be one of the restaurants where the menu is unchangeable. The chef worked with me in advance to plan out my meal with special preparations and it was noted with our reservation which allowed the waiter to know exactly what I'd be having without me having to explain all of the things I can't eat. At the end of the meal, the waiter even offered to have a fruit plate put together for me for dessert since I can't eat sugar. I had the roasted beets (altered from their traditional preparation) and they were delicious. For my main dish I had an altered version of their scallops while my friend had them as they are on the menu. We both found them to be wonderful with a great texture. My boyfriend had the steak chinoise and our other friend had the sea bass. Both said their food was amazing. Sticky toffee pudding was the dessert of choice, and I was told it was yummy...it certainly smelled yummy!! I can't say enough about the staff and the food!!

Jessica Turner

Love the ambiance! So quiet and cozy. We went for our 10 year anniversary and we were served complimentary champagne. Extensive wine list and full bar. French cuisine. Amazing steak chinoise, which is their signature dish. Creme brulee is to die for! Impeccable service!

Tammy L

Amazing bar, food and service! A must go!

Christian Lauri

I would consider this the best restaurant in Charlottesville. They have excellent food and very lovely atmosphere! Perfect for dates and occasions when you need to impress someone!

Lisa Paige

We love the C & O. They recommend making reservations, but generally, we just show up and eat in the bar downstairs. It's quaint, quiet and the food is always delicious. A wonderful place to sit with a companion, have a glass of wine and discuss the week. We've had a number of long dinners over gourmet food--not big quantities, just right--hors d'ouvres, an aperitif and cheese. Charlottesville's best.

Elizabeth Durlacher

Favorite restaurant in town. We have been going here for years and have never once been disappointed.

Steven Hebert

Best late night food in town

Andrew Sexton

good food and a great basement bar

Jason Price

Came in town for a night without kids. Made a reservation which was perfect because our table was ready when we arrived. But that’s when our service took a nose dive. Our Waiter didn’t introduce himself, our appetizer came out with our meal and he failed to bring out plates for my wife and I whom split dinner. Also, he never followed up to ask if we wanted additional bread, drinks or desert. Having travelled and eaten at some amazing restaurants throughout the World this is by far the worst service I have ever experienced. The drinks were good and food was good but if you want great service go somewhere else.

Thomas Joyce

A really nice experience. Food was great and Sarah worked with us to find the right wine for our meal.

YM Sunny

New York strips is vey good. The vegetable soup is bit too salty for my taste. The bread is freshly baked.

Mark Rhydderch-Roberts

Service poor. Extremely expensive. Limited menu choices ( only two sides available??). Food no more than ok. Kept waiting for our table for 15 minutes.

Jim Hopkins

Outstanding dinner

Merch Colony

One of our favorite bars for date night. They take reservations, but we prefer risking it for a spot at the downstairs bar area. Good lighting and fabulous service. The food has never disappointed. It's a Cville standard for a reason.

Gregg Barr

They never disappoint. Even without a reservation they were able to accommodate us and have is a wonderful meal And great service! Romantic environment. Parking is available in the lots and garages nearby.

Joost Santos

Open late... friendly staff. I came late after 12 midnight on a Sunday. There was no one on the reception desk and the place looked like a haunted house at night. But just proceed downstairs (like I did), and you will see the cozy place by the bar. The burger was so good!

Glenn Showalter

No wheat gluten free is needed and more Veg meals.

Brent Habley

Unfortunately disappointing service. It took 45 min for them to get drinks and take our food order, and another 45 minutes for the entrees arrive. The servers also appeared distinctly disinterested in us or the untimely service. When the food finally arrived, it was pretty good but poor service ruined the meal.

Daphne Latham

Atmosphere, service and food is always impeccable.

Damon Scott

great food...enjoyed and meal and sitting out back

Sebastian Giudice

We had a fantastic meal here during restaurant week a couple months back. I had smoked trout, steak chinoise (which I believe they have on the menu regularly), and chocolate bread pudding, all of which were fantastic. The bread pudding was especially fantastic. We haven't been since (it's not cheap...), but I hear they have a late night menu that's awesome and affordable.

Stacy Roach

Wasnt fond of the food , pricing, or the amount of food for your buck. Loved the look of the place and the staff was super nice but beyond that I was very disappointed.

Erin Felent

Good food though the portion size is very small. Expensive. Food is very rich, sometimes that is what you want. Nice ambiance. Bathroom is tiny and super dark.

Daniel Culhane

Creative and delish meals

Dillon Whitlow

A nice relaxing place to grab a drink and some delicious food.

Kyle Blanchette

I wanted to love C&O as it's been on my list of Cville restaurants for a while. For the most part, I have no complaints. The food was seasoned well and the flavors were all there. We ordered the Duck gnocchi and the crab cake for an …

Jacob Westfall

C&O's food quality, service, presentation and professionalism is spectacular. We used their catering service for our wedding at Early Mountain Vineyards and we were beyond impressed throughout the entire process. Dean takes care of literally everything and makes the entire experience seamless. His prices are more than reasonable as well. We continue to receive countless compliments on the food at our wedding from our guests months after the event - we highly recommend this vendor!!

Gabriella Ciprazo Shahi

Absolutley charming. The decor is old world but warm and welcoming. The food is amazing. Service is first class. Here from San Francisco and 1000% won over by this C-Ville gem.

Kevin Vellanki

Came during restaurant week, and the food was good, but I'm not sure it's worth the prices charged. The seafood risotto, New York strip, and toffee cake were flavorful and well-presented, though quantities were on the smaller side (to be expected for restaurant week). The honey gold cocktail (not sure if that's the right name) tasted refreshing and was super smooth. The only thing is that despite the ~$110 price tag for two people, the food was not dramatically different than other American/European restaurants in the area. The presentation and atmosphere was really nice, but at the end of the day I'm paying for food.

Bryan Kirby

Vintage building, excellent food, good staff. We had a wonderful time with new friends there and imagine anyone would. It's a treat to be able to dine here

john brown

Sweatbreads were delectable! Top notch fare.

Amanda Broome

This place is well worth a visit!! It's an experience just to walk in the doors. It's tucked away, off the main thoroughfare with a cute English-country façade. It seems quite charming, but when you walked in, the rapid cascade of atmosphere changes is honestly a little shocking. Is this a bar, an old country store, a fancy dinner location, a hole in the wall, or something else entirely... it's impossible to be sure from the way it looks. But then you taste the food. Wow. The choices were all unique, well crafted, and creative. I wanted to try the whole menu! The plating was beautiful. The service excellent. The taste exquisite. ... Do yourself a favor. Find this place. Have a little culinary adventure.

Algernon Primm

Fantastic food and superb service in a charming atmosphere.

Steven Sorensen

Pure class. Really cool atmosphere. It's quite expensive, but the food and drinks are great. The bar downstairs has a huge selection, and the bartender I usually see is extremely knowledgeable about different drinks. Come here to relax and live it up, but expect to pay a fair bit. It's worth it if you can afford it.

Tom Currier

Great food, great conversations, plenty of food....we miss Gran.

Frank Owen

Great bar and bartenders. Food was exceptional

Jake Liskey

A one of a kind experience. Classy, novelty and dimmely lit. My loves favorite restraunt in the state of VA!

Nico Smith

An avid fan for years. The late night menu downstairs is great for a chill evening with a friend or two.

Jj jj

Incredible place no where else like it anywhere .....Charlottesville would still be the fabulous town on earth had C & O never happened... but OMG so glad there is magic in life

Alan Howles

Amazing dinner in C-Ville. Had the ducl gnocchi & lamb crepe appetizers. Lamb was very good duck gnocchi was extraordinary! Definitely the best meal I had in C-Ville. Ambiance is also unique and service is great. Was told by a local that C & O is the seed of all good downtown eats and places like the Whiskey Jar have been inspired by it but none have matched it.

Wei Styer

This place 100% lives up to its reputation! We were looking for a nice place to get dinner to celebrate my birthday, and wound up here because of the other reviews, and C&O did not disappoint! Everything we had was absolutely delicious! We chose to split everything to try more items, so we had the brussel sprouts (which were amazing - I don't know how they managed to get them so fresh tasting, with no hint of bitterness, just lightly seasoned), the rabbit ragu (which was the special that day, with a wonderfully rich sauce and incredibly tender and moist rabbit), the steak chinoise (which is a classic on their menu and was mouthwateringly tasty), and the coupe ellery (which was a beautiful balance of sweet and tangy that finished off the meal perfectly)! They very considerately plated our entree and dessert separately so we could share it easily, so the portion sizes may look small from the photos, but it was very filling. The fresh bread at the beginning was also warm and just very good. The service was also impeccable! I don't think my water glass ever got more than halfway empty (and I tend to drink quite a bit of water), and they checked in just frequently enough to make sure we were taken care of, without interrupting our conversations. We sat upstairs, which was lovely, with lots of windows, with a rose at each table. It was just very quaint and traditional and cozy. Very much enjoyed our visit and will definitely be back!

Roy Van Doorn

C & O is a classic. Great food prepared with care, using locally sourced ingrediants. Ambiance is cozy to fancy, depending on the many rooms available. Service is personal, the staff has been here a long time and knows what to do. …

Stephanie Mikouis

Had a romantic dinner at a table on the first floor. Food was excellent, service was amazing!!! We had the duck gnocchi, the signature steak & the trout. Our server was also very knowledgeable about the wine list and she went out of her way to make a delicious hot water/lemon/honey for me as I had lost my voice earlier that day. We will definitely return when we come back to Charlottesville!

Glen Shull

This place definitely has the best ambiance.. is dimly lit great staff.. and words can't describe the food enough... Hands down one of the best restaurants in town for date night or any other special occasion...

Scott Harney

Great seasonal, fresh food in a unique, old school location.

Roberta Dawn Holliday

Amazing atmosphere, great service and wonderfully delicious food! I highly recommend C&O Restaurant.

Harry Roemisch

Great wine list. Superb steaks. Fresh fish. Experienced wait staff.

Tim Long

Excellent restaurant. Wonderful food. Steak Chinoise is a must. Service is very good. Ambiance is nice. All around a real go to place. Too bad the parking lot across the street is gone.

Natalie Dieter

One of the best restaurants in Charlottesville. A must visit for any special night out. The bar downstairs has such a great vibe and the desserts and cocktails bring me back time after time. Be prepared to wait.

Amie Holko

We had a great experience. The host was great about explaining seating options. We sat at the bar downstairs. The bread with salted butter was tasty. The beef carpaccio was on point...wonderful flavor. We ordered the beef carnoise and duck breast for dinner. The breast was hearty, but could have used more potatoes. Sticky toffee dessert melted in my mouth. I believe the whipped cream was homemade

Hunter Hampton

Cozy and rustic, C&O Restaurant feels like it belongs in the French countryside, or perhaps a quiet Parisian side street. One half imagines to find famous writers of the Lost Generation sitting alone in a corner, pondering something profound and savoring a glass of something or other from C&O's relatively extensive drink selection. The fair is delightful, and though the portions run on the smaller side, the food is on the heartier end of the scale, so you won't leave hungry. And besides, you wouldn't come to C&O just to eat; it's more of a Francis Bacon "chew and digest thoroughly" kind of restaurant. In any case, C&O is one of the better restaurants in Charlottesville, and even though the town has plenty to offer in the way of fine dining, visitors shouldn't leave without at least taking a peak.

jonnn56

This place has survived the changes of time. In the 50's, it mostly served passengers from the Greyhound & Trailways bus stations, which were next door.

Jim Sprinkel

Charming atmosphere. Excellent food.

Anastasia Gross

Food was really good. Trout with almonds was delicious! And tablecloth on a table. For me it is a sign of a quality and a good restaurant. Period.

Antonio Sastre

Excellent food, good unobtrusive service

Anthony Nikischer

Well-prepared food and knowledgeable staff. Several different rooms, all with a different vibe. Highly recommended.

David Schools

Great server. Excellent food including the uniquely prepared sweet breads. Fantastic wine recommended by our server. Delicious desserts. Can't go wrong at C&O.

Sara Strong

You really can't go wrong here. Cheese plate is a must have.

Virginia Stockwell

Always a positive experience. Serving Barboursville Merlot too. Yum. Dean made outstanding apps for our special event!

Ally Slawson

Everyone knows that C&O is one of the best places to eat in town. But what blew me away at my most recent visit was their affordable, and DELICIOUS late-night menu! A burger for $7 is pretty much a steal on the Downtown Mall, and was exactly what I needed after a night of light drinking in the area. Can't wait for my next visit!

Gail Fehlner

Omg, everything is top notch. The food is out of this world!

Amanda Whitney

Ok spot for American food. the food was so savory.

Georgia Mary Sampson Kok

Love so much of the 'Rag Mountain Trout Amandine', trout is so fresh and roasted almond is crispy! The price is a little bit pricey but it's worth to enjoy such full and contented meal with my darling!

Patricia Callahan

Attended a private wedding reception at C&O. Warm and inviting atmosphere. Excellent service and friendly staff. Dinner was delicious. I will definitely dine here again when I visit Charlottesville!

Alannah Jones

Great food and excellent service. It's worth the price.

Don Davis

Very cool, older, established locale and definitely worth a visit. Not big, super cozy, very welcoming, excellent drinks.

Jasmine Lawrence

The restaurant itself and atmosphere is amazing! That said, go for drinks only. You get few options for food and it was all much to expensive for us to have left hungry. My husband at least liked his food but I did not. There are way better restaurants in the area especially for the cost.

Larry Arends

As good as it gets. Food is delicious.

Laura Knight

My go to place when in Charlottesville. Great eats, great drinks, great service!

K LADER

We used C&O to cater my daughter's wedding at Trump Winery Grand Hall and they were amazing! C&O delivered on exceptional quality of food, service, presentation, and professionalism. I cannot say enough about the way Dean and the team handled service. It was beyond 5 stars!

Rob Mueller

Food was good. Service was excellent. Very pricey. Should be better for the money. There are better price performers in town

Charlie Duncan

So, so good! We had dinner and drinks at the bar and James was a great bartender. Cozy spot with some history and absolutely delicious food.

Joe Rebellato

The food, service and ambiance are all excellent! Head chef and owner Dean Maupin is so incredibly talented...a true artist! We've been having our office holiday party there for many years now and each time they manage to exceed our expectations. That's worth 5 stars on a review, don't you think?

Rocco P

Excellent dinner, wonderful wine selection, and a bread pudding that put me in a food coma. Definitely a more upscale date night compared to some other C-Ville locations.

Abbas Khan

My favorite spot for late night burger.

Tim Carroll

Always good. Only 2nd time eaten there but great service and food

Robert Sobeck

Sad, long wait for a burger on the late night menu on a Wednesday. Good burger but waiter kept bumping into my wife's back as he passed. Not worth the 35 min wait for a burger.

Peter Lorenzoni

The spirit of our town happily lives here. Warm, comforting, creative and true to itself. Great things live on.

Tim Williams

Went to the bar and had dessert and drinks. It looked like it was stuck in the 1980s I think? Hipster bartender and servers were dressed to fit the scene with their sweaters. They were very accommodating, knowledgeable, and offered pleasant service. Dessert was fantastic. I'll definitely return for dinner.

Dan Knox

The most flavorful steak I've ever had! A rib eye marinated overnight and topped with an herb butter. Appetizers were fantastic too.

Chapman Woodriff

One of Charlottesville's classics, delicious food, worth the price tag if you're splurging. Also a cool downstairs bar. Place feels like it's been a classic for a long time. Super professional staff, very well-trained.

Reid Zeising

Great atmosphere, menu, food and service

Beth Daane

We had a fantastic dinner and excellent (and prompt) service. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about assisting us in pairing wines and guiding us in entree selections. We will definitely be back.

Mike Wagner

Amazing atmosphere and delicious

Sarah Lanzman

We went during restaurant week. Everything was perfectly delicious.

Kevin Wyatt

An awesome place for a drink in Charlottesville. We have eaten downstairs as well as the mid floor, enjoying a few drinks in their cool bar area and great late night food. You can't go wrong with the late night food menu. The burgers are great, tacos are great and heck the grilled cheese is great too!! The staff at C&O are amazing, courteous and the best!! We will continue to come here to support the staff (our waitress Jenn mainly!!!), great food and awesome cocktails. Thanks C&O!!

Tessa Sarvay

My friend and I went out for drinks and we ended up at the bar area here at a table. The service was excellent. The atmosphere was dark and sleepy. Great for a very quiet evening.

Rebecca Szeles

Not as good as I thought it would be. The menu was interesting and the atmosphere was unique but the serving staff really ruined it for me. Everyone I came into contact with from the hostess to the bus boy seamed inconvenienced by my presence. The dining area was small and became even more cramped with the addition of fruit flies. You had to be careful swatting them for fear of hitting your neighbor. Finally, I would avoid the trout as there were more slivered almonds by weight than there was fish on the plate.

Rajinder Mavi

Wonderful staff and delicious food make this my favorite place in cville.

Brittany Hundley

Had a great time at C&O for a wedding rehearsal, and the food was impeccable. I’ve been to C&O a few times for Restaurant Week, late night drinks, and dinners with my husband, and they never disappoint. However, the service at the rehearsal was outstanding. Georgie, Kevin, and Jeremy were all fantastic and made our experience that evening perfect for all in attendance. Thanks for a great dinner and the delicious drinks!

Hailey Floyd

Cozy old-feel bar setting, love the lack of TVs. Bartender was very fun and friendly.

Amber Ostoff

Unimpressed with serivice and food. It felt as though age was a big factor in the way you were treated here, if you’re under 40, expect to be treated as unimportant. Our server seemed “over it” and was walking away from the table before even listening to our questions. Then the food came, if you’re into a butterstick as seasoning, you’ll love it. But in all 4 dishes we ate, butter was the only thing we tasted, one if the dishes literally had a whole butterstick melted under it. Then for the next 36+ hours we were incredibly ill from the food we’d eaten, we had to cancel all plans for the following day because of the food we’d eaten.

Kyle Siegrist

Wonderful food and service. We had several delicious small plates.

MJ

Wonderful, delicious delightful dinner. All 4 of us enjoyed each & every dish/course. Quaint historic setting. Superb service.

Jordan

My husband and I come here on our anniversary and we love it! Absolutely amazing service, food and environment.

Jared Christophel

Have had a Christmas tradition here for many years. Continues to impress. Warm. Fire.

bert miller

This is a Charlottesville classic. Upstairs a white linen sort of dinner while downstairs in the Pub more relaxed. Food is AMAZING. Also have a great catering biz.

Jeremy Sharp

I love this place. Amazing food, great atmosphere, friendly staff. A Charlottesville institution.

J. Martin

I’ve loved C&O in the past, but recently it has become hostile to vegetarians. In the past, it offered at least one entree or dinner appropriate appetizers for vegetarians. Today there aren’t any vegetarian entrees and hardly any dinner appropriate appetizers listed on its online menus. Sadly, I believe that many chefs in Charlottesville are incapable of imaginative vegetarian cooking and yet they are able to meet the needs of those with gluten-free diets.

Luca C

I love the atmosphere. Stake and gnocchi are delicious. Very good desserts. They have many Italian liquors aspatio. I love staying in their outside patio in the summer. They are also one of the few places in town that feel cozy and warm in the winter time.

Daniel Frisbee

My favorite place for a drink in Charlottesville. The bar downstairs is such a classic space. A warm and inviting vibe permeates the room of brick and wood. The tenders behind the bar are friendly and knowledgeable. A Manhattan and some warm house made bread and butter and you can't help but feel like you are living the good life. Cheers.

Sharon Hopper

We had a great meal here last week! Service was wonderful as well.

Elizabeth Clark

Not what it once was. Still reliably well above average, but the excitement’s gone. Not an innovative place on the Cville scene anymore and- unless you’re looking for late-night or nostalgia - simply not worth the money.

Albert Ernest

Great food & service - one of my favorite Charlottesville restaurants...!

Rupert C Ryker

The bartender, Anthony is a great fellow. Doesn't belong to this century.

Ray Tinsley

Go for the late night menu. It does not disappoint. The staff is always very friendly.
