The owner, Mike Kelly, is a chauvinist pig! My girlfriends and I were in the lobby waiting for a table so we decided to take a few group pictures. Mr. Kelly came around the corner and made a comment about having a hoe-down. At first, I assumed it was just a random joke because a couple of my friends were wearing cowboy boots...but then, he proceeded to talk about what happens when you get a bunch of hoes together! I confronted him and got an apology for maybe "taking it the wrong way" and offers of free drinks at the bar. Needless to say, we left and he will not be getting any of my $ in the future. Think twice before supporting a local businessman who has no problem putting a label on his female patrons, even ones who act and dress in a respectable manner.

Kellys is an annual tradition for our family. The seafood is always good, and the sweet potato rolls are the bomb! This year was no exception, food was great, service was good. It's kind of pricey, but it's in line with what I would expect when going out to a restaurant on a barrier island, in a resort town, during a holiday week. The reason I give four stars instead of five, is because my seafood platter came out fried, instead of broiled (it's as menu option). Also the hostess was a little cranky. Otherwise it was great.

I can't give it one star because I actually finished my meal, meaning I enjoyed it to some degree. When you see 30-40 dollar menu items, you expect a certain quality of the food overall. It throws you off when that quality turns out to be mediocre. The bread is the initial indicator. It's usually warm and delicious. I'm pretty sure this place gets rolls from Costco and warms them up a bit. Chicken Alfredo was lack luster and almost hard to eat. Can't really explain. I had a hunch that this is one of those places that is just really expensive because the SEA food is just so good. I asked the friend next to me if his crab legs were outstanding or atleast somewhat substantial in his experience of crab legs. He wasn't enthusiastic about them. Overall, over priced mediocre food. And i'm not a snob in the slightest. I'm a college student who plays video games and wears the same shirt maybe three days in a row. Honestly I wish we had just ordered Dominos tonight. Sorry!

Full disclaimer: The visit took place in early 2013, but I wrote the review just a few days after coming here (I intended to post it to Yelp but never did). It was decided that we go and try Kelly’s. We get there and there is some event going on downstairs, lots of people, lots of bad, loud music. We were lead upstairs, what I appreciated, just to get away from the noise a little bit. Well, the noise was still more than audible, but at least it got compensated by freezing cold temperatures up there! I was sitting there with the hood of my hoodie over my head, my girlfriend was wearing her jacket. Other guests were clearly cold as well, and at some point one of the waitresses closed the skylights (it was windy and cold outside, early April). It got a little warmer. OK, ready to order some food! I went with one of the daily specials, which sounded pretty good (catch of the day with a raspberry-red wine sauce, and a side salad). It took quite a long time for the drinks to show up and we got the salads before we had our drinks. After briefly glancing over all four salad bowls it is obvious that all salads are a different size. And not only that, one salad just had greens, one was missing tomatoes etc. Only one salad appeared to come with everything they presumably intended to include in it. Those salads were going to the same table. Didn't they think people would notice that...? Now to the main course. My daily special looked good. That is about the only pleasant thing I can say about it. The fish was rather bland and the raspberry-red wine sauce tasted like raspberry syrup from the grocery store. Not what I would expect from a ~$25 meal, especially if the website advertises “a little fancy to exceptionally fine” selections. It may have been an Outer Banks catch as they stated, it’s just kinda sad what they did with it. 2 stars because the waiter was friendly.

My family has eaten at Kelly's many, many times and have always encountered excellent service and food. The menu is versitile for accommodating different appetites. There is tapas-type menu for lighter appetite and also steak, seafood, burgers, pasta, etc. Something for everybody. We have sampled most everything on the menu. Delicious, great quality food, prepared perfectly. Wait staff are very friendly, attentive and my glass is never empty. When visitors ask places to eat, this is definitely one I recommend.

We have eaten at Kelly's many times in the 12 years we have been here. Each time is a surprise, in the sense that the "good" keeps on getting better. We were there recently with a dear friend who was visiting from Colorado and craved seafood. She got what she wanted and more, and we also had our fill of wonderfully prepared dishes. I heartily recommend Kelly's for just a couple's meal, entertaining guest or taking the whole family!

The best of both worlds. Kelly's features a world-class, quiet dining experience that is completely separate from its "best on the beach" entertainment scene in it's tavern. You can definitely enjoy great food in a family friendly setting at the same time a party is taking place across the way, you won't hear it.

My family and I spent the week in OBX and went to many restaurants during our visit. During our last night, we decided to way at Kelly's Outer Banks Restaurant. I am very glad we did, most definitely saved the "best for last". Once you enter the restaurant, the building itself is unique. We were greeted by friendly hostess and seated immediately. Service was great. The food was out of this world this. I highly recommend this restaurant! Ever given the opportunity to go back to the OBX, I will most definitely will be dinning her again.

This is a family run seafood restaurant that has been around for generations. As one of the first stapels to Nags Head, the decor and atmosphere bring about a feeling of history of the great area. This is fine dining so expect a little price to the meal, but the quality is impecable. At night, there is live music with lots of dancing. Great place to be!

"Best wedding food I've ever had" ....I can't tell you how many guests came up to us on Friday and told us that. Kelly's was a dream team to work with and helped us every step of the way create a menu our guests would enjoy and are still talking about after the wedding. It was a pleasure working with such a professional and friendly restaurant for our wedding. Get the shrimp and grits and the mac and cheese!! They boxed all of our leftover wedding food up and we got to enjoy all of our favorites again the next day. Top notch catering company and Kelly himself came to our wedding. Was greeted by incredibly rude security, who instead of welcome us into the establishment, immediately began to threaten my friends and I about their zero tolerance policy for underage drinking (We're all 20). They held our ID's until we left, placed GIANT black X's on BOTH of our hands with permenant sharpie marker, and placed wristbands on us (The wristband alone wasn't enough?) We promptly left out of embarrassment from the obnoxious markings all over us and harsh treatment. Was degrading treatment, wont be going here again.

My husband and I decided to take a last minute getaway to Nags Head and decided to try Kelly's for the first time. We were majorly impressed. Ravann was great serving us and even gave us pointers on where to go for the St. Patricks Parade. We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Kelly as well. We were so impressed that we decided to come back the following night and again we were extremely pleased. This is one place that will be at the top of our list. I came for a reception dinner, and the waitresses were terrible. They didn't want to bring us a wine list, and after I retrieved my own, wouldn't take our order. I ended up walking to the bar to get my own drinks. The waitresses then continued to seen annoyed and bothered by our needs. It was a terrible wait staff experience, but I give praise to the others who cooked and continued doubt their part to make the evening nice. The joyful wedding event was soured by the staff's discontent and poor attitude. I do not recommend this location for any event or at the least a date night.

What a find! Off season looking for a light meal. The hostess walked me into the tavern introduced me to the sushi chef and pointed out the free hors d'oeuvres. Did not eat a full meal but it has to be good based on the sauted veggies, pulled pork and cole slaw on the free table. The sushi roll with lobster was superb.

Used to like this place. Last two visits it was terrible. They were out of the lobster special. Crab cakes were burnt on one side. Creme brulee was burnt on the bottom. Steak was overdone and tough. Waited too long on drink refills first time. Second time never got refills. Overall this place is on our list of places to avoid. Could go on but this pretty much says it all.

Don't know who is paying for the rave reviews. Very disappointing - had the half chicken - dry, no seasoning. My husband had the crab cakes - all filler with green beans straight out of a can. I remember the sweet potato biscuits from years ago as something really special - no more - bisquick with a spoonful of canned sweet potato.

Many bad restaurants on OBX. This is NOT one of the bad restaurants. Excellent prime rib. I paid only $14.95. Wide price range. Professional wait staff. Beautiful ambiance. Amazing photos and historical documents on the walls. Locally owned. Really fresh locally caught fresh fish and crabs. Try the tuna. By fresh I mean the fish was swimming within the last 48 hours (Mondays may be the exception, maybe not). Note: This is the first review I have posted to the web.

I've been going to Kelly's for over 15 years now, ALWAYS a good experience! They have the best atmosphere on the beach and tasty food every night! Get ahold of the oyster specials while you can! The bar and lounge area is great and probably the biggest on the beach. Great spot for family meal or special date night. I'd recommend going for sure!

Very good fish and oysters here I would suggest making reservations for a table on the top top floor where you have your own private room for about 6-8 people. Also make sure to eat the sweet potato bisquits that they give you before your meal.

I liked that we were seated in a secluded area, as requested. However, I wasn't impressed with my food. My appetizer was pulled from under me before I could finish it- $10 for 4 scallops? My main course lacked flavor, I had to request extra sauce to cover it in -to enjoy it. My waitor couldn't inform me of the price of my wine before I ordered a 2ND glass and didn't offer to go find out. And the late crowd of red necks we muddled through trying to leave really left a bad taste in my mouth after forking out for a $300 check to feed 7 people. We have eaten at Kelly's every year for many and I can say, sadly, it was a major dissapointment. We will not be returning. There are too many places here in the obx that offer exceptional food with reasonable prices for us to buy into Kelly's hype any longer.

Simply put, nice place and even nicer people. Me and my husband were just in the area for a mini vacation, and were starved. We got there a little after ten on a weekend night with a live band (pretty good pop jazz band), we sat at the end of the bar and had a couple drinks and the food was decently priced and delicious. RUDE. I'm writing for brides who might be considering Kelly's. I haven't even eaten at this place, so I'm not sure it's a fair review, but I wanted to warn you all. My wedding is scheduled for 09/2012 and I contacted Kelly's to schedule a tasting. A) Mary insisted that there would be a fee for the tasting, which is absolutely UNHEARD of. Caterers should be bending over backwards for your business, especially if they know they are competing with at least 5 other companies. B) Mary also insisted that I choose items from the menu before the tasting, but then when I called the day prior to the tasting with my selections, she copped an attitude saying that it was too late, and she didn't have time to accomodate me. PLEASE NOTE: I had scheduled 5 other tastings with other caterers within 1-2 days notice and they were ALL accommodating, nor did they insist that I MUST send items ahead of time. If I did not provide selections, the caterer just presented me with a platter of their more popular items. It's a wonder that this place gets any business at all if person Mary is always answering the phone. I told Mary to take my wedding off her schedule, and I took her off the list of potential caterers. My relationship with vendors should be easy for my big day, I don't care how cheap the food is, it's not worth the stress. I'm a thirty something bride from the DC Metro Area.

My wife and I were married on the beach on July 26th. After our ceremony, we went to Kelly's for dinner. I had made the reservation online which was very easy and helpful. We had our children with us and were made to feel right at home. The service was wonderful, the food was amazing and we all had a wonderful time. They had karaoke going on that night in the lounge and we were even able to chime in on some of the fun and singing along. My wife ordered the lobster it was so overcooked it was like rubber and very difficult to get out of the shell, small portions for the price the rice and green beans were cold by the time the meal was served. very disappointing experienced would not recommend to anyone.

Kelly's is a really classy dinning place with a unique nautical decor and true southern homey feel. The staff were great and added to the relaxing atmosphere. Most importantly the food was great! Kelly's prices are on the higher end but worth the money. On average, you'll spend around $20 per person while here.

I went to for kareoke night with my friends on spring break. I put in our song choice 2.5-3 hours before kareoke ended. People that put in there songs after us got to go multiple times. The DJ told us we were next but we never were. This is obviously a place that is biased towards locals. I would not suggest this place to anyone and will never waste so much time in that place again. I put a one star because it is not possible to put zero stars.

This would be a great night life spot if they didn't try to force reggae as music to get down to. The bands weren't bad but they absolutely killed the vibe. Knock off with the reggae and let the DJ work.

I had a great time here at Kelly's Tavern. The food was good. Didn't have to wait long. Enjoyed my time. There was a bartender named John who was such a great and wonderful person. Also very polite unlike some other places. Just want to say thank for the great time!

Had a table reservation for 10. Great table and location. Nice atmosphere My meal was wonderful. Scallops were huge, cooked wonderfully Shrimp and crab sauteed.Mashed potatoes and green beans awesome.. I would get this meal again for sure My husbands prime rib was so so. Alot of fat. Was not a real lean cut. It was alot of fat for the price. He said it had a good taste to it though. Service awesome. Bartender made a great Tom Collins (2). Dale very professional and a caring server. Our birthday boy was surprised! Fun at the nite club afterwards..Real nice evening we all will not forget!

This is one of my favorite places to see a live show. I have been here to see Collie Buddz twice and Tribal Seeds w/ Josh Heinrichs & Skillinjah once. I love the experience of driving up early, ordering from their vast menus and then enjoying the show. I always get the crap soup which reminds me of a creamy Thai Massaman curry. The sweet potato biscuits that you get with your meal are a always something I look forward to. There's definitely something for everyone here and if you ever get a chance to catch a live show I highly recommend it.

We totally enjoyed this place. We were late on a Wednesday and the service by Ed was pleasant and accurate. The food was done just right. The Filet Oscar style and the Prime Rib were nicely done and very flavorful. Sweet Potato biscuits were worth the visit! We will definitely return to Kelly's!

Staff was friendly and efficient. The food came out incredibly fast. However, I got the shrimp and scallops pasta and it was way over priced for what i received. The pasta was over cooked and chewy and I had to fill up on bread because I couldn't make myself eat the pasta. My husband got the wild caught shrimp with fries and it was great! I guess they're just not too great with pastas.

My husband always takes me to the Outer Banks for my bday. Our favorite meal is steamed oysters, which Kellys has the best of everything. ..price, size, and perfectly steamed. Their service is impeccable.

We had a very recent wedding in another city for our daughter. I just had to let all of you parents know who are trying to figure out what to do and how, CALL KELLY"S!! I cannot explain the level of professionalism, attention, and expert advice we received from Kelly's. Mary Anne worked with us on the menu and all of the planning. Her patience was unbelievable! She advised us and made suggestions, carefully allowing us to have the final say, but trying to make sure our day was perfect! Vicky and her TEAM were the group who turned this into a PERFECT, delicious, wonderful evening. When we say something is catered, we often think, they brought the food. This was much more than that. When you are "catered to" your every wish, your every need is met and/or exceeded. We were truly catered! My final word of advice is this. If this event planning is not something you do on a regular basis, trust them to help you. At the last moment, as they were going over the list,the owner said, they do not need two kegs of beer for that number of people. We will bring extra bottled beer in case, but not two kegs.He was completely correct! Not only did we not use any bottled beer, we did not finish one keg! They had our best interest at heart, and I appreciate them so much! I cannot express strongly enough, for your events, go to KELLYs in OBX!!

You can't go to the Outer Banks and NOT visit Kelly's outer Banks Restaurant & Tavern! Home to some of the best crab dib I have EVER tasted, Kelly's is more than just a restaurant--it's a tradition. After you go once, you'll never want to go anywhere else--the food and service is just that good. Everyone is always so friendly and accomodating...they can handle the two party diners or the multi family parties. There's always something for everyone--definitely a "must eat" at the beach!
