I found this restaurant in a search for catering and a banquet hall for my family reunion this past week. I live in a different state, so all of the arrangements were made by phone or email. Lynn, the manager was so helpful and patient with my ever changing needs based on budget. The catering for the cookout was efficient, delicious and well-serviced thanks to Lynn, Brad and Chef Andy. We were late due to a flat tire and Lynn even volunteered to pick us up. The burgers were especially a big hit. The banquet hall is a beautiful intimate room that has a separate entrance from the main restaurant. Again, Lynn was there to greet us and support our questions and needs. The waitresses Brittany, Kelly and Brad were pleasant at all times and helpful, especially with the elderly family members. The fried chicken was amazing as well as the mac and cheese. The desserts were fresh and delicious. I can only say great things about this restaurant. Thank you for making the 2019 Bishop Family Reunion a success!

Just had wonderful breakfast omelets sitting outside on a lovely day. We both got the Greek Omelet and they were more than happy to accommodate dietary restrictions (whites only) and other additions/changes. The omelets and hash browns were delicious. The fruit side was a standard mix, but very fresh and sweet. Overall, a good find for a Saturday exploring Durham.

Just left this place and it was really trash. I only got the "Feature Salad" which came with blackberry dressing. The dressing was really bland and thick (definitely not as flavorful as a typical balsamic vinaigrette) and the salad looked like they got the spring mix from walmart and tossed a few blue cheese crumbles and raisins, with 4 apple slices in it. A 3 year old could've made this salad. I also got fried green tomatoes on the side which was super wack. Very bland and it only came with 3 extremely small green tomatoes and the breading wasn't right. The cashier's vibe was also off but I normally dont care about the peoples attitudes more than the food. Wouldn't recommend this place for salads or fried green tomatoes.

I'll try to keep this review short, but I have so much to say about my positive experience with Hope Valley Diner. If you are in the Durham-area and you are looking for an event cater, I recommend that you look no further than Hope Valley Diner. This restaurant goes above and beyond and absolutely exceeded my expectations. We worked with Lynn Gardner to create a menu for a family BBQ and a family Banquet that would accommodate 70 people. She was so patient and professional especially when we played with numbers to create a menu that would fit within our event budget. When it was time for our BBQ to begin, Lynn and two sous chefs arrived forty minutes before our event to set up. My family is very particular about food and they had absolutely no complaints. We had hamburgers, hotdogs, turkey burgers, turkey hotdogs, corn, baked beans, watermelon, potato salad, and cole slaw. Everything was delicious! Throughout the BBQ, the sous chefs were going around and clearing tables, interacting with my family members so pleasantly, and were actively making the BBQ a remarkable experience with their impeccable customer service. We had a second, more formal family event in the Hope Valley Diner banquet hall. I love the hallway that leads to the eloquent space. We were able to fit 63 people in the banquet hall comfortably. Again, we were very impressed with the customer service and the delicious food. Coming from out-of-state, we were taking a chance by choosing Hope Valley Diner to cater our family event two days in a row for a BBQ and a banquet. This was one of the best experiences we have ever had with caters when it comes to customer service, food, and quality of the event hall. If I'm ever in Durham again, I know exactly where I'm going to go!

Was pretty upset. They apparently close early. Hubby and I went in to eat and got seated pretty quick, but service to get drinks was another thing. Eventually after about 10 min, the hostess came and took our drink order. We finally got our food order in and they were apparently out of everything. We ordered 4 different times and finally got something that was left on the menu. Will not return

Love this place, have been going for years. The only reason I gave 3 stars was because on my last visit, our portion of food was very small. I went in for take out and the veggies didn't even come half way up the container. When I mentioned it, the guy just looked at me with a blank stare. Wasn't enough in container to be charged the amount for a side item.

This was my first time to eating at this Diner. I had one of the best Spanish omelettes I have ever had. It had flavor which tells me they season the egg before they cooked it and they even saute the onions and chillies and green peppers before they put it in the omelet. So good I ate it all I never finish a whole omelet, and the Belgian waffle was so light but crunchy you're just going to have to try it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will be back cuz there's so many other things I want to try, y'all just going to have to take my word for it yummy!!

This restaurant does have good food but what sucks is the staff I have been to this restaurant about 4 time but the last two times It been the service was not good she was busy talking to the other waitress and it didn't have nothing to do with Hope Valley Diner job I was sitting there for 5 minutes before the waitress even offered me a glass of water and we was ready to order but she got lost again please work on your customer service

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!! From the moment I got there I waited to be seated (as it says on the door). Eventually I sat myself because no one was there at the host station. It’s 4pm, the diner has only a few customers but I never got acknowledged by the waiter (he served the table next to me their food,so he saw me) or got a menu after waiting patiently. My mom and I walked out. NEVER will I go there again or recommend to anyone else.

I am a semi- regular at the diner for 5 years now, coming in usually about 6-7 times a year. Food was good. Waitress was very nice. However, hostess was awful and ruined the experience (not sure of her name but she was a middle aged African American woman). I walked in and she hollered from across the entire dining room for me to say “you’re going to sit here” without any kind of welcome or greeting. She proceeded to slam the menu on the table with attitude and never and quickly walk away. I got my good quick from my waitress and it was good. As I was halfway through eating, hostess shouted at the waiter “give him his check, I am trying to get him out of here to get the next party seated.” Hostess then proceeds to go get my bill before I was even close to eating and ask me for my payment and say “we have people waiting behind you so I need you to get up as soon as you can”. What happened to hospitality? I spend a total of about 10 minutes in the restaurant from the time I walked in, was rudely seated at my table, received my food, and then was rushed though eating and paying my bill by this horrible hostess. Meanwhile, there are plenty of other table that are open in the dining room and only about 3 people waiting to be seated. I can honestly say I have never been pushed out of a restaurant until now. It was unexpected, especially Given that there were plenty of open tables. From the time I walked in I experienced the hostess’ attitude and she ruined the experience. If you ever want to attract repeat customers, get rid of the hostess ASAP because she ruins all the good stuff about the HV diner.

It was great to find some home cooking and not another chain restaurant. Our waitress told us that everything is homemade. I enjoyed the fried flounder that I ordered. I was excited to see they had fried green tomatoes as a side dish! They reminded me of the ones my Grandma used to make. I also had broccoli salad as a side, and it was delicious. It is the first time I had chopped tomatoes in it. It was so good that the next time I make it at home, I will include the tomatoes too!

Was very disappointed with the food this morning. Casey did a very good job with our large group in the separate room but my food was less than stellar. Egg was cold, bacon ( which I did not order but was charged for) was almost burned and very crisp, biscuit was cold and too hard to split, BUT the grits were warm and good. Too many things not to comment. I know you usually do much better.

The food is pretty good and the service is decent. They are incredibly fast for the quality of food which is always good. If you need a quick bite but want something slightly upscale this may be the place for you. I'd lean towards three and a half stars over the three. While there's nothing about it that makes it really pop in my mind, including the food, there's something to be said for better than average food at better-than-average prices.

I have been coming here for over 20 years. The only reason I go back at all is the food. Service is abysmal. Walked out last night after sitting 15 minutes after hostess seated us with no acknowledgement whatsoever. I have had many similar service experiences here. Debbie, if you are going to have a restaurant, you need to provide service, otherwise just close the doors and focus on the catering. The service is shameful.

Seems like there's not enough servers because it takes too long on drink refills and getting the check to the table. Servers have a tendency to hang out in the kitchen. The food is good. Breakfast is the best. Supper is a meat and three-type fare.

This diner deserves ZERO star! This wasn’t my first visit to the diner but by far my worse and LAST VISIT. I came to the diner with a family from out of town and bragged on how good the diner was. But today was a horrible experience. Food was great but the service was really POOR! We ordered but when we got our food one order was completely wrong. And instead of the waitress apologizing she became very RUDE! Snatched the plate back and when she brought the correct order said you’re “Welcome” very rudely. And the manager Casey wasn’t any better when we made a complaint. No one came to refill our drinks or to come get the check and money. I had to walk up to find someone to pay for my food I will not be back!

Well, the food is always good, but their customer service is a little off if you catch my drift. Some people get a lovely greeting and smiles, tables wiped. This lady wiped every table except ours. When they get busy they don't come around as much. Seems like the elderly get treated really well. I mean, not that the shouldn't, but how about everyone. I will continue to go because the southern food rocks. I wish they would upgrade the inside. The chairs are rickety andTtttttttT old. They are too close together for my liking.

Very good food and wait staff, very poor management! I refuse to support a business that doesn't strive for great customer service. Durham offers too many great restaurants to settle for one that has awful customer service. My husband and I came here for dinner this evening. There was a man at the host stand who barely said hi to us and also told us he had never hosted before, in a frustrated tone. We later saw that the host staff was running late, and the man who sat us was probably forced to step in until she got there. While we were waiting on our drinks, this same man said very rudely to the staff behind the bar, "We all know that doesn't belong there! Please move it!". One of the staff snarled back at him and said she'd only sat it there for a minute and she would move whatever was out of place. I ordered a $7.99 omelet and he ordered the seafood platter for $14.99. The seafood plate only had 4 shrimp, 2 scallops, and 2 pieces of small catfish along with the green beans and onion rings. My husband expressed his concern of the small portion to the waiter. The waiter checked with the manager and returned to us to confirm that this was the appropriate portion. The manager never came over to express an apology or to offer a helpful solution. My husband approached the manager and introduced himself as the person who expressed concern about the seafood portion. Her name was Annie and she was behind the counter at the register. He expressed that he was more upset that she didn't come over and address our complaint more than being upset over the small portion. She said "I'm sorry that is what we charge and there is nothing I can do". I joined the conversation after hearing her unhelpful reply and assured her there were plenty of things she could do to make it right. I explained that she could begin by asking us what she could do to make it better. She continued to point at our receipt and say "this is the price, and I am unable to change it". She even told us we weren't the first to complain about the seafood portion size. I told her that I understood seafood was expensive but she could have offered more green beans or bread since those are low cost additions. However, she made no effort to provide good customer service or welcome us back with a free appetizer. I asked her if she was okay with 2 upset people leaving her restaurant and never coming back and she said she was okay with it. Arguing with the customer is very unprofessional and by the end of our conversation we had an audience in the restaurant. Very poor management and a very poor atmosphere. We will not be returning to this restaurant and will not recommend it to anyone based on the service we received on top of experiencing the tension amongst the staff.

Although I thought that the omelet that I had the first visit was a bit small, the flavor and ingredients were very good as was the fruit. The food that my friends got also looked very good. I also have had the chicken salad sandwich and although it is more like tuna salad (not chunky) it was tasty and there was a good amount in the sandwich and even though it's November, the tomato tasted like a tomato. I had fries with my sandwich and they were hot with some crunch the way I like them. I also have had their hand made potato chips with ranch dressing (you can order this through their catering) and these are addictive. Their menu also has some unique items and many daily specials. Service here was friendly and fast. Overall, I have had good experiences here and would say this is an above average diner.

I ordered a take out from this restaurant last week. I ordered fried chicken mac cheese/cabbage. I was advised the chicken would take 20 min to cook. I waited...the chicken was awful. It was the driest chicken breast i ever ate. The mac and cheese was hard like they had used the same mac/cheese for a couple of days. I was very disappointed. if there was an option for no stars that would have been my choice.

Just walked out after sitting for almost 30 minutes without ordering. We did manage to get our water after 15 minutes, but the waiter just put them down quickly without a word and walked off. The table next to us left as well, and the waiter and host didn’t seem to care.

When we arrived there was a wait. Once we were seated, we waited about 8 mins for anyone to even greet us. Finally a guy came and took our drink order. Our server brought my husband his beer and about 5 mins later she brought our drinks. We told her that we also ordered a water and it was fine to get it after we order. She walked away and went to another table right beside us and took their order. She went and put it in and finally came back and took ours. This was a good 20 mins AFTER we sat down! People that came in after us, got their food and were leaving before we ever got our food. We were there last table to be sat on the wait so people after us didn't have to wait to be seated. Our food was really good, but our service was horrible! We were very disappointed in the service.

Hope Valley Diner is one of those hidden gems in the area. The food is always fantastic, I wish I could describe the menu to you but it's better to think of it like southern cooking with a little bit of everything on the menu. Breakfast is served all day and is good anytime you order it. There are new specials every week and I've got to say I've never had a bad dish here. The staff is friendly but you can tell when they get busy that there isn't always enough staff. Despite being under staffed sometimes I've never had to wait longer than 30 mins for my food, not sure who's running the kitchen but they do an excellent job. Overall, can't beat the price, quality of food or the quantity, make Hope Valley Diner your stop for breakfast, lunch, or dinner sometime you will not be disappointed.

I have been coming here since it was ricks diner and was surprised to have been treated so awfully! Took 15 mins to get bread. They brought my entree without a side and said they ran out. The waiter was rude and pushy. The manager did nothing to make the situation better. The lack of customer service was upsetting. It’s sad to have such a great restaurant fall under poor management!

Classic diner mixed with a deli. Super friendly staff that really knew how to talk to our daughter. She basically loved our waitress. Everyone really liked their food, which was impressive since I had country ham while my wife had grilled scallops. They have a large array of kids options, and my daughter went with pan-fried shrimp. We had a 50th birthday party at the venue. Hope Valley Diner is a wonderful place to have events, formal or semi-formal or special gatherings. The food was excellent, the park was great and the staff was wonderful.

I eat here often. A few nights ago my friend and I came in for dinner and had Katherine serve us. She was fantastic. So personable and fun. We really enjoyed our experience. She's a great server and a cool lady. Now the hostess is another story. No clue how she is still employed. She must have something on the owner. Literally the rudest person I've seen in an eating establishment.

Nice "family" type of place with reasonable prices. Great big menu of home cooking. Simple, but very well done, with really friendly and attentive service. No, it's not for a "special" event type of night, but it's a great place for a middle of the week dinner, or a quick bite whenever. Good food joint. Period.

I am come every Sunday morning for breakfast and this Sunday morning I call for reservations for a table 3 and I spoke with Tom .Tom told me no problem but when I arrived Tom and the young lady that was helping him act like that had not spoken to twenty minutes earlier I called at 11:04 am and I arrived at 11:20 am and to wait 15 minutes for a table after putting in my reservations that was just poor customer service and experience for after raving about this place and the only reason I put in for the reservations is because I had to be at work at 2:00pm I don’t know if I will be back anytime soon not only that I have been sitting at my table for 15 minutes no one has came by to take my drink order but they for the people that was seated after me and next to me they waiter took their order first .Just a experience this Sunday morning and no saugage links for my breakfast..11-25-2018 was day that I visited 11:58 am

The Hope Valley Diner has several great food offerings for virtually all patrons from sandwiches to steaks to seafood. The various dishes are properly cooked to order. Great fresh baked cakes along with a proper bar to help make ones dining as complete as one wishes. A great find a bit off the beaten path and locally owned.

Waited a half hour for eggs and hashbrowns just for the order to be wrong. Waitress said she could send it back but i did not want to wait another half hour. Got the billed for my girlfriends meal and drink and then my drink. Most places would atleast remove the drink for the meal that was sent back. Manager never stopped by to smooth things over and waitress diddnt try to discount anything. Customer service obviously is not high on the priority list. I do not recommend this place and do not plan to return.

A wonderful place to eat ran by great people. I work nearby and we always go to Ricks for a quick lunch to bring back to the office. The are accommodating with our large order and NEVER forget anything. They even remember extra condiments! Great food at a great price. Their grilled cheese is to die for.

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would! Worst service ever! Ordered the fried chicken, was told it would be 20 minutes. Fine. After waiting 30 minutes, order came but was told that the sides I ordered 30 mns ago weren't available. Not fine, but okay, already waited half an hour. Also came with a biscuit that was rock hard. Asked the manager, Steven, for a replacement roll and different side. Served fresh with a rude attitude and was told that nothing that happened was in his control. A manager with no control?!? Sounds like good business! Also had to walk up and ask for ketchup and hot sauce myself as no one bothered to ask if I needed anything the entire time. Finished, Paid for my meal, full price, and again, Steven with an attitude acted like it was beneath him to even take my payment as he rudely put my payment slip an a pen on the counter and walked away. Asked for the owners #. Called her and was assured the customer service was her highest priority and she would get back with me. Surprise! No call yet!
