Clean restaurant with a nice ambiance, a little bit noisy. Ordered a side of sweet potatoes for starters. The sweet potatoes were not true to taste based on the description but was not bad. I ordered the shrimp po boy sandwich with bay chips and my friend ordered the shrimp and lobster rolls. Firstly, my food was cold. I wasn't happy with my bay chips and my waiter was kind enough to replace them with fries but they were not fresh. My friends rolls were hot and she found them to be "good" and both rated them a 3/5. We wanted to try the snore chocolate cake but they were out. Overall, for the quality of the food it is overpriced. It's not a bad place for a social gathering. Staff is friendly and welcoming. Might go back to try other items on the menu that looked appealing based on description but not anytime soon.

When you visit Mississippi, you must realize that beer and wine are not sold in stores on Sunday! Also, that very few restaurants are open on Sunday either. So, we scored high points when we found SALTINE open! It had a very inviting menu to choose from and Sunday evening was half-off bottles of wine! Our server was Emily and she was attentive and personable, and made us feel most welcome. For that matter, the hostess, the manager and other staff were also very friendly. The fried green tomatoes with shrimp were awesome, followed by our generously portioned seafood plates! Key lime dessert was also a great finale to our meal. The service was excellent and we loved that this modern, yet charming restaurant was located charming within an old, historic elementary school! We highly recommend it. Our compliments to the chef and thanks to the staff for your warm, Southern hospitality!! We highly recommend this restaurant.

I ordered the calamari as an appetizer. It was fried in corn meal instead of flour, which gave it a crunchy texture, which I kind of liked. The slaw and sauce on the plate complimented the dish nicely. And the portion size was huge! It really could have been an entree. I ordered the strawberry shrimp salad, which came with avocado, pork belly pieces, kale and feta cheese. The dressing was a peach honey vinaigrette which was the star of the plate to me. I really enjoyed it but some of my pork belly was over cooked and the shrimp still had the tails on them, which I'm finding a lot of restaurants leave them on making it difficult to just start eating. But that salad dressing made up for it!

I guess I'm just not into the "hip" yuppie hipster millennial restaurant Fondren fad. Outrageous prices (especially on the oysters) I mean it's just tasty ocean snot in a shell. Name it a fancy catchy type of oyster and you can increase your profit of one oyster by ??? I won't say the percentage. The owner might one day want to visit NOLA and actually taste real food. If your food is good you don't have to put lipstick on it to sell it. It's overpriced food. Good looking staff. Fancy bar. It wasn't even 1pm and they were out of the lunch special. 4 tables were full. Shape up or ship out.

This place is the worst, I can’t even begin to understand why anyone would want to come here. For one the service is terrible I mean really bad the waiter was on his phone most of the time and wasn’t helpful at all. The place was old and you can tell I don’t even think they’re up to code. Would go into Saltine on Friday for lunch and sit at the bar. Depending on what time you get there it can be pretty busy. They have a great beer selection. For the most part, the food is classic Southern with po boys, catfish and Mac and cheese. They also have a ramen special day. The lunch always hit the spot and is well priced.

Honestly, this place probably deserves 5 stars. Our server, Zach, definitely deserves 5 stars. And there is a good chance that I will go back someday and try more things on the menu and bump my rating up one star. But for now, here's my 4-start review: Great oysters. No doubt. I liked that they didn't have fifty thousand different oyster options like other oyster bars that I've been to. The crab cake appetizer was delicious. Try it. However, the fried oysters were just not good. Too much breading. Not enough seasoning. And lackluster dipping sauce. Everything else was tasty.

We looked this place up on Google maps and dropped in for a late lunch today around 2p.m. It had a good size parking lot, wasn't overcrowded and the decor and dining area was clean and classy yet casual enough for my 11yr. old in her cheer outfit. "The Mayor was there with his family as well". The gravy fries "add cheese on top" were Amazing and reminded me of poutine in Canada. The citrus oysters and raw gulf were the best of the samples and the shrimp and grits were tough competition for Louisiana. The staff was friendly and our waiter Ethan did a great job also the food came out hot and quick. Highly recommended in the Jackson Area.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Definitely recommend the wood-fired oyster sampler so you can get a taste of everything. When I asked the waitress for Mississippi beers the manager brought us samples of a bunch so we could pick. The Bama BBQ oysters are phenomenal, and their desserts are worth saving room for.

I cannot remember the server's name, but she was fabulous. My food palate is not what it could be, so I tried the burger and fries to be safe. It was worth the price. My girlfriend had a bowl of gumbo, which I ate some of and it was fabulous. She also had an eel taco. I did not partake, however; she loved it. We shared the Banoffee pie for dessert, it was grand. The real joy of the evening were the cocktails. I had the deep skinny margarita, it is hands down the best in the area... so far. We also tried the Eye of the Storm, Marilyn Monroe, and the Sirens Brew. They were all top notch cocktails!

The food here was great and it has atmosphere to spare in the old school building Our group ordered cheese dip, avacado and crab toast appetizers which were both solid and the smoked tuna dip which is fabulous. My grilled shrimp po boy was delicious and group members also complimented the comeback chicken club and the Saltine salad.

We love Saltine! After two amazing plates of oysters, Leslie served us our third plate, not our server David. The oysters were old and full of sand, basically not edible. Ann should be promoted to Leslie’s position. Leslie is not qualified to serve fresh food of any sort. Ann would do a much better job at serving fresh food, she has a very competent attitude and cares about the customer. David is one of the top servers! Ask for David to be your server at the door! Great, consistent service all the time! Staff and managers genuinely care about their customers. I eat here a lot, and the other night, my mom and I ordered a dish we hadn't tried before; turns out we didn't like it very much, though we saw that a lot of people around us were ordering it and did. We had decided it was just a lesson for us in taste, but our server noticed we hadn't really touched the dish upon asking for our check. He asked, and we explained, rather sheepishly, that we just didn't really like it. Next thing we know, the manager is at our table and offering to take care of this one. He was so gracious and and really made us feel valued as customers with individual tastes. This remains one of my fav. restaurants in Jackson. Edit: The dish pictured below is from another visit. I recommend it! It's the black fish with potatoes and brussel sprouts. My favorite. Delicious!

I can’t say enough about Saltine. The food is some of the best in the state and it’s located in the heartbeat of Jackson — the Fondren District. I recommend going for brunch (for the chicken biscuit) or lunch, because of the lower-priced lunch specials. I love the Nashville hot chicken or the comeback chicken sandwich. My wife loves the poboys and you HAVE to try the freshly made cinnamon rolls.

This is my first night here and the food is EXCEPTIONAL! I am having the oyster lafitte and I have never had oysters like this before; scrumptious! Now, the three star rating is for the service......I sat at the bar and there are two females working, Lily and another female. The only reason I know Lily’s name is because she informed the people that sat down AFTER me. Those patrons were given three menus(drinks, food, and special) as I was only given two, like I wouldn’t buy from the specialty menu(just my opinion). When I sat down, I had to engage the female first verses when the patrons next to me sat down. One female took my drink order and walked off, not to return. Lily came with no introduction and asked if I’d like to order some to drink. I informed her that I previously ordered a drink, but I was ready to order food. I ordered my food and from that point forth, no one asked me anything or even made a statement. There was no interaction at all with myself, but the patrons next to me received excellent customer service! I came here after work to wind down and have some of the famous oysters that have been bragged about. I also read some previous comments about the staff and how they are racially motivated with their service, but I hoped I would not receive that treatment, but my hopes were dashed with the service tonight.My empty plate of oysters shells sat in front of me for at least 15, at the bar,lol. Well, this will not detour me from coming because as I stated the good is quite excellent! I just hope that the staff is trained on how to treat ALL PATTONS and not just the ones that resemble them in physical appearance. P.S. I GOT THE MOST SPEEDY RECEIPT AND CASHOUT IN AMERICAN HISTORY, LOL!

Honest review from a New Orleans resident traveling through the area - Location is GREAT, Staff was excellent so i wish i could review on those areas only which would have been 5 star but since i have to include the food i have to lower to 3 star. The shrimp and Oyster poboys came with minimal dressing, 2 cherry tomato's and maybe 10 small shrimp. Same goes for the oyster which seems to be the norm here in Mississippi. We will no longer get seafood poboys in this state. The gumbo was more like stew which was ok but not great as it was too thick. Hush puppies, gravy fries, cheese grits, Nashville hot oysters and the Cin roll cheese cake were PURE HEAVEN. I highly recommend getting it! In all this is probably the best place for seafood in the Jackson area but we were disappointed with the poboys & gumbo. At $15 each it should have came with 2 handfulls of shrimp per poboy!

My husband and I were traveling from Ohio to Louisiana. Stopped at this restaurant solely based on its reviews! We were not disappointed. The hostess was helpful in encouraging us to try oysters (as neither of us have ever tried them). The waitress was courteous and helpful with suggestions. My husband ordered fish & chips I ordered cajun pasta. We kept eating off each other's plate. The oysters were very good. I eat vegan and am not open to going outside those boundaries. But it was truly delicious for a one time experience. The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars was the waitress said our dessert would be free since we waited about 30 minutes for it and ended up charging is. (It was worth it by the way)!

I'm not a huge fan of oysters, but my husband loves them, so we went here for a date. I was pleasantly surprised. We got the sampler of oysters, and it was so good we actually just had a couple of those. The Bama BBQ was my favorite. Our server was great, friendly and fun. I will say we were really disappointed in the fried oysters. The breading was a bit odd and it didn't have much flavor. We barely touched that appetizer. Overall though, I really liked this place. Went back yesterday, and same feelings on the place. Delicious food and good servers. We tried the feta mozz gratin this time, and it was so good!

Visited Saltine in my hometown of Jackson now at least 3 times. Superb modern Southern seafood and eclectic cuisine and atmosphere in historic converted elementary school. The gumbo is delicious and the Nashville hot chicken is truly to die for. Staff is very friendly and on the ball. Amazing spot for dinner in midcentury-modern Fondren neighborhood just north of downtown Jackson. An absolute MUST for any visitor or area resident! Five stars all the way!

I brought my entire family for my birthday here from out of state for my birthday. Our food was mediocre at best. (Honestly, I thought it was awful, especially for the price.) It's a beautiful place, so the fact that almost no one of us liked our food was a pretty huge disappointment. Good for the photo opp but not much else. I'm honestly baffled by all of the rave reviews. I see some that acknowledge the wonderful atmosphere, but unfortunately for me that does not rescue the terrible food.

Ambiance & menu were a 5, execution of food & service were a 3. We ordered the Oysters Lafitte as a starter, which were way too salty. Entrees came out 2 minutes after the oysters but somehow my steamed buns were cool to the touch. And then the hush puppies showed up 10 minutes after the entrees. I think that if the chef showed a more restrained hand towards salt and the timing issues get worked out, this place could be great. I liked both of my cocktails & thought the decor was super cute

Saltine is a very nice place, we were able to be sat right away. Server was super helpful, and we started off with a chicken biscuit. Can't go wrong! Then landed on spicy catfish. My favorite restaurant of all time - not just in Jackson. Saltine has some of the friendliest staff in the state who really go above and beyond. Daily Happy Hour specials are unbelievable: half-price cocktails and $1 Gulf oysters, which also happen to be the best oysters by far in the area.

First and foremost, This was my very first time eating at this establishment. I had read all of the great reviews and thought I’d try it out as a Togo order as I have military duty in the morning and needed to start packing at home. First I came in and waited at the hostess booth for 15 minutes without being acknowledged or helped. I had to call the stores phone number WHILE I was standing inside the store to be helped you. Mind you 3 white waiters and waitresses seen me and didn’t even bother to say hi. Someone finally came and when she told me to go the bar where I continued to stand there while 3 more white waiters/waitresses looked at me and still did anything. 2 of them were having a conversation with each other and didn’t service me until THEY were done with their conversation. One white guy with glasses looked me directly in my eyes and didn’t think to get there attention that a customer had just arrived but they helped the white man who was by the bar. I’m VERY VERY VERY disappointed in the service I’ve been given here. And I will not be back ever. Update: the manager Julie/Julia was very helpful in rectify the situation but I seriously doubt I’ll be back after that. But thank you so much Julie for being nice as you were the only nice one there that night.

Professional, welcoming, and delicious from beginning to end! We attended Ramen Night (Mondays). We have a seafood allergy so we let our waiter (Jason) know immediately. He and the kitchen were extremely kind and considerate and thorough in dealing with the allergy. Even made some changes to an appetizer for us! We had the fried green tomatoes (without the topping) with comeback sauce and teriyaki wings for appetizers. All delicious, but the tomatoes & comeback were the best ever! Tonight's ramen was also fantastic. Awesome atmosphere, delicious food, and the best service we've had in a long time! Saltine is doing this right. We look forward to returning many times!

Good...quality has diminished a little since the ownership / management change. But it’s still good. It was superb... now it’s just a good restaurant. They set a high standard and maybe it was too high to begin with or the new management just wants to shift the focus away from food to the beer selection. all in all..one of the better spots in Jacktown

Very good southern fare. Friendly staff and killer grub in a historic school building. Atmosphere is great. I always enjoy their po-boys. Shrimp and grits is fantastic as well.

I visited for the first time this past Saturday. Our waitress, Morgan was great in spite of and Ms. Ann did take care of us, but the food was late and cold. Also, I feel like things could have went a little differently.

This place is just fun. Very cool, trendy spot to eat. Clever design, using an old schoolhouse, and incorporating those elements into the restaurant. The food was excellent, and the bread pudding cheesecake was one of the best deserts I've ever had. Excellent choice for a meal!

Great combination of options for seafood and comfort food! The shrimp cocktail had huge shrimp and a great poppy seed sauce along with some good, actually hot cocktail sauce. The Nashville hot chicken was amazing, and actually quite spicy. The building has an interesting layout and great atmosphere. I'll definitely make it a point to come back next time I'm in town!

Some of the best Gumbo in town. The chop in the Meat & Potatoes was perfectly seasoned and tender
