We pulled into Northbound after a long bike ride. We were tired, sweaty, and maybe a little hangry. Thankfully the service was swift so within moments we had tasty beers in hand. A surprising short time later the food arrived and it REALLY hit the spot. Though we'd arrived hungry, we left with food still on our plates. Needless to say, we'll be back!

We had appetizers of hard boiled eggs with Sriracha and blue cheese, and the poutine. Both were fantastic. The poutine had freshly made French fries, smoked brisket pieces, cheese and gravy. Really, it could be a meal by itself. I also had the French Dip which exceeded my expectations for the “simple” sandwich. It came with a demi salad and homemade blue cheese dressing. I washed it all down the Rail Ale Pale Ale, which was smooth and not too hoppy. My husband had the brisket, cheese and fried onion sandwich which he said was okay.

Cocktails were pretty good, the Canadian Old Fashioned was well balanced and quite tasty. Both me and my significant other had an issue with the fish and chips though, with both of us falling ill after having it. Can't say I'm too keen to go back very quick after that experience.

Smokehouse Porter is one of the best beers I have ever had. A must drink for Stout fans. Food is also positively delightful. Parking is on the street and be prepared to park a block or two away and walk up, especially on Friday and Saturday at dinner time. Totally worth it though. Aside from that, all I can say is parties of 6 or more should avoid prime time. This place is not made to host tables of 20, especially during peak hours (like 6pm on a Friday). You are simply being a nuisance to other patrons by demanding so much space and attention.

Absolutely in my top 5 for brew pub locations. Dog friendly. Hip. Beautiful patio. Beautiful restaurant and pub. The beer is made on site and my number one place to get a growler. The staff is ultra friendly and knowledgeable about the beer. The whiskey selection is smart and well put together without being snobby and overpriced. Yes they make beer but their food from their smokehouse is really why you go. Fair prices for...in my opinion...one of the best menu's in all of the metro area. They also have a brunch on weekends that is a must try. The waffles made from spent beer grains is one of my favorites but you really can't go wrong with any of their dishes.

Not only do they have a great beer selection, the food is equally as great. While it is a smokehouse, they have a good variety of vegetarian options as well. The wild rice burger is fantastic. This is a solid neighborhood brew pub that I absolutely love! The service has always been fantastic as well.

I went for happy hour and only had a beer. They have great prices and great beer! Happy hour is from 3-6pm and then a late night one, house beers are $3.50! There is no steps to enter, but not necessarily wheelchair seating. The bathroom is big enough for a wheelchair, but a diaper bed could limit transfers. (But parents with babies, good to know for you). Sorry for attached bathroom picture, but it's really helpful to some people.

There's really no place quite like Northbound. It's become a cornerstone of the neighborhood but the open, come-as-you-are air is welcoming to everyone. Great beer, mostly house-made smoked meat dishes (with a few veg. options), a beautiful patio and relaxed environment. Weekly specials also keep things interesting.

We went there for dinner and drinks. The beer was really good. They also have pretty good cocktails. We're vegetarian but they had a really good vegetarian burger (I cheated and got the Cuban which was also very delicious). The atmosphere is really fun as well. It does get busy on weekends so expect to wait at times. Also it is a bit pricy for a brew pub but definitely worth it.

This is a pretty mediocre place, owned by a mediocre person. Initially I thought not to review this one at all, considering the people who work there seemed nice and good at their jobs. It was very pricey for the "quality" of the food. Then I see this pop up in several public groups where their racist, sexist owner says things like "no fatties". He has a bad reputation in the twin cities for being a lousy person and frankly, I have no desire to give my money to someone of such lousy character. Take a pass and spend your money elsewhere, to good people who do good for our community.

I love their beer - especially their dark beers. They always have the smokehouse porter, which is awesome. In the winter they also have other dark beers, which is great. Their specialty cocktails are also very delicious. I especially like the old fashion. They have an awesome, shady patio. I have been going here since shortly after it opened on a pretty regular basis and have NEVER had a bad experience with a bartender or server! They are always on task and friendly. As with anywhere, sometimes people get behind or busy but they are always sure to get to you as soon as they can and make sure you know that they didn't forget about you. My only gripe is that I wished they changed their food menu more often and had more vegan/vegetarian options. We live pretty close and this is a great neighborhood place. Which means the same people are coming in frequently. You should change up your menu every season or so.

Eat here!! Staff is amazing, ambiance is nice, there is outdoor seating for warmer months, the food is amazing, and the beers great too. I had the BIG JIM which is Surly-esque, smoked cheese curds, and Cuban Reuben sandwich. The sandwich was absolutely delicious, dripping is juices and so tender. The smoked cheese curds were equally yummy, cold smoked cheese deep fried in a light Pronto Pup type sweet batter. The food and beer were seriously so good you gotta give this place a try and heads up for their food truck around town!

When I first heard that Northbound had cold smoked wings, I didn't immediately head out to try them. That was a mistake. Please learn from my mistake and get some of the best wings in the city as soon as you are able. They just have this intense flavor - kind of like a good smoked bacon, but kosher - and such a succulent bite. I can't really do them justice in words, so try some. If you like flavor, you'll get it here.

Great smoked meats, fish and cheeses. You'll smell the smoker walking up and there is a giant front patio. Food options include everything from apps to hearty meals. To top it all off, they brew their own beer and carry top locally brewed options. It's nestled in a small mpls business district and feels close to the neighborhood.

The smoked Porter was really yummy and the trout & greens salad was amazing! The salad had smoked hard boiled eggs, smoked trout and bacon and wild rice on perfectly dressed greens. Yum! Was told 20-25 minute wait. No problem. At 50 minutes still no table. Only two 4 top tables where sat in the 50 minutes we where there. Food turn around time was slow, not much coming out of the kitchen. We decided to leave since it would have been a long wait for food. Wish there would have been a more realistic wait time given in the beginning.

Just stopped in for beers. A good selection, and you should be able to find a brew for everyone. The outside seating area is nice. Bar is also good seating. A handful of TVs to catch whatever game is on. The Big Jim IPA is solid. The Imperial was touted as Mega-hoppy, though good, it fell a little short of expectations. The Castro Reserve was quite good. Very rich. Their sour was solid. Want to go back for food sometime. I hear it is good bar food. Will update more after next visit.

Northbound Smokehouse has been rated as best brewpub in Minneapolis. It is no doubt that their food and beer taste so good. They brew some great beers, and has a quality selection of other locally brewed beers on tap. The outdoor seating at picnic tables is comfortable and refreshing when the weather is cool at night. Their porketta were flavourful and tender. Tasty with fragrance from herbs. The meat were juicy and not dry although it was smoked. Hand cut fries were excellent. The server were friendly and able to accommodate my request to try a variety of beer. Their beer are quite good. I do like their pale ale.

Didn’t even make it past the door. Walked in, server walked up past us, never said a word, disappeared and never came back. Meanwhile, behind the wait to be seated sign, we waited patiently as a large party just filed in past the sign and too up 6 tables. Pretty pathetic experience. We just left.

It's always fun to get turned on to a new spot. This place has it goin' on!!! Enjoyed a couple of their in house brews....my niece had the watermelon sour beer....yum! Nice patio. Great menu with lots of appetizers. Love that! The Ruben & Turkey Club were both really good and the wings got a thumbs up from someone else at our table, as did the bacon wrapped jalapenos. They also have some outstanding happy hour specials, esp. on certain days of the week! Definitely will be back & you should check this place out, too!

First time visit last night and it was great. No seats when we arrived around 7:30, but only had to wait 10 minutes at the bar. They have a deep craft beer selection of their own and a few others. The imperial red and IPA were excellent. All the food was amazing and everyone really enjoyed it. I'd definitely come back next time in town.

This place has some great food. They only use quality ingredients and meats yet they have fair prices. Pork, beef and fish are what you can expect to find here. They even have a wild rice burger I've been meaning to try. My favorite sandwich right now is their Reuben. Their house made sauerkraut and house made thousand island are really good. The corned beef is also no exception to their choice in quality ingredients. We usually split a poutine order when we go here and love it. I personally dont drink but my wife likes their pale ale. Great atmosphere and prices. Places like this are why I love this town. Thanks, northbound!

My neighborhood joint. I think they brew some of the best beer in Minneapolis. There's more to beer than IPAs and Pale ales so I really appreciate that they brew styles that are less common, such as barley wines, porters, and bocks. Lots of delicious smoked foods too. Porketta, brisket sandwich, smoked fishes, are all great.

Even though it was a bit cool and raining we all had a great time sitting in the patio area. We were a group of 12 and it was tough getting seating inside so we sat in he patio. The food was very good - I had the tacos and my wife had the chicken and waffles, which I need to try when we return!

Because Google reviews are highly manipulated - I am making this review. No way is this place a 4.5 with 500+ reviews. Smoked chicken wing was borderline raw and barely smokey. Fish sandwich was cold yet overcooked and frustratingly small. I decided to have the salad instead of the fries. They put my salad in the fish basket where the fries would be.. classy . Brisket sandwich with aus jus was a poor execution... was more like crock pot meat and the au jus was exceedingly salty. Accompanying french fries were tiny nubs that should have been thrown away yet they served it anyway. I gave two stars because the service was good. Too bad the food isn’t good.

Ok beer and bad food. My wife and I joined my family for dinner here, my father and sister had already ordered their meals by the time we arrived but it took the waiter a good ten minutes to come by and get our drink order and another twenty minutes to get our food order. The food did arrive quickly but we soon found out why, the chicken sandwich my wife ordered was still RAW. It was sent back after she flagged the waiter down, another twenty minutes later she received her food. I had finished my lackluster wild rice veggie burger before her food arrived. Her meal was given us free. The chocolate raspberry stout was really good but that didn't make up for our bad experience.

The menu was not as extensive as we expected, but the food was good for BBQ sandwiches. I had the hand-cut fries and I enjoyed them. My husband had the chips and they were also very good. If you want to save $2 just to go with the chips. The golden coffee beer had an nice coffee flavor without the bitter aftertaste.

My favorite Brew pub. They always have a great variety of their own beers available and I haven't met one I didn't like yet. The food is good too and the price is reasonable. The best part is their outdoor seating during our (too few) warmer months. But inside is cozy too. Northbound is very bike friendly too, with lots of bike locking space and a bike mechanical station right by the front door. A great place to meet, talk, and enjoy the best of South Minneapolis.

We drank a Blueberry Bramble, had fried cheese curds for an appetizer, and for entrees had the brisket burrito and bangers and mash. It was all excellent. My tastebuds were very happy. The service was spot on. I would definitely recommend this place.

Service is excellent, the beers have been delicious (especially the smoked porter during a snowy night), but the food seems to be lacking. Having house smoked meats and cheeses is an excellent idea, but the thin deli sliced portions make you wonder if they are just smoking some Oscar Meyer and Kraft singles out back. Okay, not quite that bad. The fried foods and wraps are delicious, it's just that this place has the *potential* to be fantastic. Right now I'll call it a great brew-pub with the perk of some decent food.

Cocktail and Brew was wonderful, but the food was sub-par at best. We ordered the lox wrap and it was mostly the tough part of romaine lettuce with a tiny bit of salmon and the 18hr smoked sandwich was soggy and overdone. Unfortunately we won't be back.

Smoking In The Back Room! Smoking in the back room? Well, yeah, because everyone knows that smoking aint allowed in school especially the boys room. So where are they smoking? The back room of a restaurant of course, well to be more specific, a kitchen. And this type of smoking inside of restaurants is legal in the state of Minnesota. The smoking that I'm referring to is a large structure that houses delicious meats that are cooked for several hours until it decides to fall off the bone. These structures, known scientifically as a smoker are found all over Kansas City, St. Louis, across the south and now right here in Minnesota. I'm positive that Vince, Nikki, Mick and Tommy, yeah that's right, The Crue (Motley Crue people) have even enjoyed some delicious smoked goodies (And I'm referring to food folks!). These boys would even appreciate the outstanding smoked goods found at the latest place we visited, the Northbound Smokehouse and Brewpub. A friend of ours told us he just had some amazing wings and he was recently at Northbound. His next comment was, "When is the Gnaw stopping by to try them?" Answer: The same day he contacted us! :) Located just off Hiawatha Ave. on 38th sits this quaint smokehouse and brewpub with a smell, that upon entering will overtake your senses. We pony'd up to the bar while we waited for our table and enjoyed one of five in-house brewed beers called Honey Wheat. Nothing like the wheat's we've had from other pubs and breweries and was outstanding. As we waited a sandwich was brought to the patrons next to us and I had to ask, "What's that?". What was it? It was their 18-hour Porchetta Sandwich and you guessed it, was smoked for 18 hours. It's like we can read each others minds sometimes... We looked at each other with the same reaction "Guess we're getting that!". The bartender looked at us and chuckled, "Yeah, it's a must try!". Porchetta is bar far one of my all-time favorite meals and anytime I get a chance to have it, I most certainly will be. The full description is; The "Iron Range" classic, house-smoked shredded porchetta topped with Swiss cheese and sauteed onions on an egg bun, then served with with their house-made BBQ sauce. We also added a side of their hand-cut fries to our order and I've said this time and time again... We need more places serving hand-cut fries. They're simply better! Is your mouth watering yet? I didn't forget about the wings, it's what we were ultimately heading there for in the first place. We went with them naked as we tend to do our first time at any place known for their wings. We want to get a feel for their overall flavor of course and asked for the buffalo and ranch for the side. One bite in and I was hooked! These things were cooked to perfection, but not everyone likes heavy smoked food and my wife just happens to be one of them. I on the other hand devouered all of them and if I wasn't full, would of asked for seconds. There was one thing that I would have changed and I got the chance to talk to Ryan, one of the managers about it. The food is so delicious and unique that they need to do the same thing with their buffalo sauce. Currently it's just Frank's and I guarantee that they can easily pull something outstanding off that sets them even further apart from the rest. Yet another outstanding place to put on your "to visit" list and I'm definitely looking forward to heading back to try some more delicious smoked goods. I also want to try some more brews on tap and maybe when I return, they'll have a new buffalo sauce for me to test out for them. A+ service and food. The Smokehouse Porter, Blueberry Bramble cocktail, and braised been poutine all earned 5 stars from us. Also, the server working late-night happy hour Saturday night was flying and doing a great job keeping up with a busy crowd. Give that man a raise.

No real complaints just my observations: Surprisingly quiet for a Brew Pub at 6:00 on a Thursday. Parking was not as bad as I thought it would be. My biggest complaint is that I don't understand why they have oil lamps burning in the middle of the day (seems like a waste of money ) There are 18 tables and 15 seat bar, and a rather large patio for a street corner pub. There menu has a variety of vittles (heh), but their appetizers are not lactose-intolerant friendly ;(. I'd come here again looks like a nice place to become a regular.

Stopped here with my family on way back from Fort Snelling. Had great Service from Bekah the staff all seemed friendly. I had the 18 hour Porketta and it was excellent, not something you see everyday at restaurants. Also liked the cream Ale beer. I don’t make it down to the cities very often but this place is worth the stop!

Amazing food and beer. The smoked mozzarella sticks are a must. The hot ham and cheese was so delicious that it was a game changer for my grilled cheese making at home. Look forward to going back the next time I'm in town. Well worth attempting to gets lost three times while getting there.

The beer and food were good, but the service wasn't ideal. I was given fries instead of a salad, my girlfriend was given the incorrect beer, my girlfriends roommate was given the incorrect beer and was incorrectly charged for half of another friends fish and chips, the friend who ordered the fish and chips was given the wrong beer, another couple we were with were given the correct beer but the waitress gave the beer to the wrong person so they had to switch after they tasted the beer, and they were incorrectly charged for one of my beers. No one got what they wanted, but the food and beer was fine.

Love this place. Been here a handful of times and haven't been disappointed yet. The beer is solid and the food is really tasty. My favorites so far are the Meatloaf Sandwich, the Smoked Brisket and Cheddar, and the Smoked Wings. I live nearby so will definitely be back!

Amazing food and huge portions! I recommend the porketta sandwich and the Cuban reuben. The cheese curds were the best we've had in the cities! The beer was really good and the service was awesome! Will definitely be coming back

My trout tacos were incredibly dry and bland. So dry, I had to keep sipping on my water for them to go down. Not sure why they don't serve the tacos with any kind of sauce. The description said they came topped with pineapple ambrosia slaw but there was no trace of any pineapple on my trout. Additionally, service was incredibly slow. Very disappointed in my visit and won't break my neck to go back.

Great brewery with many different offerings. Their beers are delicious and the food is amazing. The smoked beef and cheddar was mouth watering good. The only downside is that you have to wait a long time to get in. The wait is worth it though.

I'd have the chicken fried pork sandwich with the side salad was tasty, but somewhat expensive for what you receive... my friends had a Rachel and smoked pork sandwich, they'd stated they were quite happy with them as well. Might be worthwhile checking out if you enjoy eating Outdoors on a warm summer afternoon on there patio.

Northbound was OK. Glad we went and would go back if I lived closer. It seems like a nice little neighborhood spot. That said the service was bad from the start and stayed that way. Apps came a minute before entrees, took forever to get refills. I would have ordered another beer if the service was quicker. Food was decent. Good hotdogs and fries and the jalapeno boats were good. Though the chicken sandwich was not. All around not bad.

The porketta sandwich is as good as you've heard and then some. The waffle battered cheese curds are also a wonderful treat and the dry rub chicken wings will change how you feel about wings. The smoky flavor puts them in a league of their own.

Don't sit inside if you have a smoke allergy. Out side seating is available. I did not enjoy the food. Staff are friendly. Good place to get a flight of beer.

The cuban Ruben was amazing! The beer selection is nice. Price point is a bit high. The sides don't come with the entree. The baby sized cup of slaw for $1.50 was very disappointing. The wait staff did not impress at all.
