My family and I like this restaurant. The best time to go is on Friday for the all-you-can-eat fish fry! BEST fish in the Twin Cities! the home-made sweets and pastries are my wife's favorite! Way better than Mickeys! My only thing about them is that I wish I could go for dinner. Keep it up!

They have new management so I was a bit worried about one of my favorite breakfast places. I should have been. My son had the breakfast burrito and it was great, as always. I had and omelet which was fluffy and wonderful. As always, prompt service and quick, frequent coffee refills made this a fine way to start the day.

Unfortunetly one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had... waited over 1 hour for cold and incorrect food orders just for our waitress and every other employee basically avoid us like the plague because they knew there was an issue at our table, our orders were not correct and no one wanted to even acknowledge it. When trying out any Breakfast place, I order the Eggs Benedict. I find that this is a good judge of their ability to makes a good egg as requested (poached when eating a Benedict) and that hollandaise sauce is a fickle mistress who requires attention and skill. The Classic Benedict was delicious! Perfectly poached eggs atop a thick slice of ham and a buttery, crisp English Muffin. All was smothered in a rich, creamy hollandaise sauce. It was served with a huge side of crispy hash browns. The coffee was hot and the staff were friendly and quick! Can't wait to go back and try out some of their Mexican inspired dishes! Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a great breakfast in a cozy atmosphere!

As usual, my meal today was wonderful. I had the Pork chop and eggs special. The the pork chops were seasoned and cooked just right, the potatoes were fresh and cook perfectly as well. In the eggs were exactly to my specifications. Yawn that the staff is always friendly and accommodating. The cafe has lots of natural light with many windows perfect for a breakfast or lunch time dining experience.

My favorite place on the east side of the cities for Sunday breakfast. The menu is extensive, the food consistently good, and the staff very friendly. Service is generally good but there have been times we've had to seek out someone to refill our coffee. However, as of Dec. 2018 they will no longer be accepting debit or credit cards.

Extremely poor experience and way overpriced. A friend and I ordered the 'Steak & Eggs' for lunch (listed under 'The View Specialties'), when we got our orders, my steak was noticeably smaller than my friend's and over cooked (I ordered medium). The waitress forgot my toast and it arrived several minutes later. Moreover, at least a 3rd of my steak was pure fat. the rest of the meal mas mediocre at best. I complained to the waitress and she offered to give me a caramel roll for the 'inconvenience'. This was unfair as I still had to pay full price for a unsavory plate. To make matters worst, we also learned that coffee was an extra $2.69 (most places include it as beverage option). On top of the 'Specialty' plate of $12.49, that brought up my bill to $16.40 after tax, which was way too much for what we got! I gave the rest of my $20 dollar bill as tip for the girl attending our table since she was helpful and friendly, and the poor experience with the meal was not her fault. I'd give it ZERO stars if possible. One thing is for sure, the group of friends I was at the time and I agreed this was our last time coming to that place. Not worth it.

Every time I get fries from this place I'm always disappointed. The fries are never all they way done, this time I chose the home fries and those weren't cooked all the way through either. My sister asked for over hard fried eggs which means no raw or runny yolk. Well needless to say the eggs were not fully cooked either. The cook obviously doesn't know what well done food is.

If I could give negative stars I would. Worst experience I have ever had! I use to love this place! First off 2 adults and a toddler, when we ordered our drinks the kid didn't even let us get a kids drink In. We didn't even get a kids menu until after we had ordered a short stack. The food was terrible my eggs were not even cook right and was very greasy. I expect some grease but really. The server didn't even ask how the food was until after she brought us the check. Never going back again.

Even when this cafe is really buzzing, the service, food and environment are great! It's a fun place to go. Even with the bridge (a more direct access from downtown) closed, this little cafe doesn't seem to be hurting as much as neighboring businesses. I believe it's worth following the detours to eat at this cafe.

Personal experience, that may or may not have any bearing on anyone else's experience: A friend of mine brought me here for a birthday breakfast. I ordered the cinnamon swirl toast, which was amazing. But, the kicker for me was the fact that I noticed a group of people sitting across from us. They were wearing red and black. Eventually, I recognized that this was the Vulcan Krewe! So, the Capital View Cafe has given me nice memories, and is a place where St. Paul Winter Carnival folk apparently gather. So, come here and see whom you can spot!

The food here is always great and the service is never bad. The prices are just right considering the location. I highly recommend coming here. The only reason I have 4 starts instead of 5 is because the cooks messed up my order today and did a bad job of fixing it. I have been here dozens of times and this is the first time this happened. The waitress did an amazing job to get it back to the cooks to have my food remade.

Late breakfast experience: Long wait (past the point of comfort), standing in the doorway. Wondered if the numerous magazines in the rack near the door was for that reason? Was eventually pointed in the direction of a table in the back room (adjacent to the frame shop). Was reseated to the middle room upon request as back room was cold to the point of everyone seated there needed to wear coats and hats. Upside: Food was good with large portions (no sharing plates though, without a $2.50 charge).

An excellent meal - at a restaurant, that should be the prime reason for the rating, and since it was one, it remains the prime reason for my five star review. However, I will get into the details as well. I am a vegetarian; the menu was extremely varied, even for non-vegetarians, but surprisingly vegetarian friendly with few necessitations for substitutions or removals from menu items, and when substitutions were desired (as I did choose an item which required a substitution) the staff was eager to please and made the process simple and painless - while this should delight my fellow vegetarians, it should also encourage any diners as to experiment with menu items that they otherwise might not order on the basis of an ingredient they do not enjoy, as substitutions do not seem to be found objectionable whatsoever at this establishment. This takes me to the service. The restaurant is seat-yourself, which is fine, and our server was adequately attentive - it was a busy time of day and they seemed understaffed, but she certainly made enough time for us and was there when we needed her. I wouldn't rank it among the best service experiences I have had among restaurants of this level, but it was also nowhere near the worst; as I said, it was adequate, and our server was pleasant and helpful within the limited time that she had for us. The menu itself is eclectic, containing a mix of traditional breakfast items, standard American diner fare, and Mexican/Mexican-American food that was both excellent and reasonably ethnically authentic (though I was severely disappointed with the salsa provided with the "chips and salsa" that my dining companion requested. The guacamole was of significantly higher quality, however). Finally, the prices were extremely reasonable, and my final verdict is that this certainly IS a restaurant that I will be returning to in the future. Photo posted taken from the men's restroom, I found it humorous... next time I will take pictures of the food, as those are likely a bit more helpful in deciding whether or not to patronize an establishment.

Capital View is a pretty good breakfast spot. They have a lot of options and their prices are fair. The staff is consistently very friendly as well and is has a homey come to it. It is always busy on the weekends though so you won't be able to enjoy a quiet, relaxing breakfast, if that's what your going for.

This place was very busy and not enough wait staff on hand. This is not why I took a star though because that kind of thing happens from time to time and our server apologized for the lack of attention. We had Mexican lunch and the food was blah. Nothing to write home about or go out of the way to get. The chips and salsa was what you would expect from free chips and salsa. The guacamole was good thought, made fresh!

Above average greasy spoon cafe with a wide range of food selections in both classic diner and Mexican veins. Only open for Breakfast and Lunch, expect them to be relatively busy at all times. They do have a reasonable sized group of bussers that refill coffee and water to help you feel more attended to while you wait for the waitress. For breakfast, I recommend getting there before 9 for the early bird specials which come with a drink included. Cheap, tasty, and efficient.

EDIT: Had to downgrade 1 star. Ordered the Friday fish fry a couple weeks ago and the fish was TERRIBLE. Not edible at all. I asked for fresh plate and it came the same way. It was like fried snot. Not a sign of white flaky anything. Really quite a turn off. Have not been back since. This a a good place to go for what I call " good clean fill". Big portions, prices are OK, friendly service. I eat here 1-3 times month. Usually for breakfast.
