Not much for me to choose from for gluten free. You can have gluten free buns in the freezer for those of us who need! Jason's Deli even has gf buns! Culver's also has gf buns! Oh, Hickory Park in Ames also is a great place for me too eat!

The breakfast buffet is very delicious with a nice variety of food and fruit to choose from. My favorite is the bacon! It's thick and not paper thin. My husband ordered off the menu. He had chicken fried chicken and on another visit he had chicken fried steak. Both were very flavorful. We really like the country feel and the little shop at the entrance of the restaurant.

I differ from all the other reviews! It was one of the worst meals I have ever had, and especially for the price. The only good thing I had was the potato casserole. I had told friends we were going there for Mother's day and they told me you will regret it, "the food is not good". They were right!

Doubtful I'll return. Everytime I got up to go through the buffet line my table was cleared. Salad bar wasn't stocked. Waitresses were busy, but quite a few other staff members were either gabbing or watching me eat. Buffet food was adequate. Heard for years how great the food was, but I didn't see what the appeal was. Maybe if I ordered off the menu, I'd feel differently. Took me 20 years to give them a try and may be another 20 years before I give them another try. Should've gone to Jethro's. Always had good experiences there.

Table bread, no butter. Three plates, cold vegetables. One steak, just not right and on cold side. Was busy and the server was great, but could not get the hot food to us because she had so many tables. First time there, $60.00 kinda jipped.

We went for the Friday All You Can Eat Fish Fry. Choice is fried or baked cod. Comes with vegetable, choice of potato and family style cole slaw, cottage cheese and a basket of bread. The food was fabulous however the service was not so much. Restaurant wasn't real busy so the service was extremely disappointing. Will go back as that is very unusual for The Machine Shed. Hope you enjoy your stop there!

Food was not do good for me. I had the meatloaf, and it had all kinds of vegies in it, even celery, not what I like at all. Just meatloaf , with mash, Mac, cheese, green beans and rolls. Everything else was good

Whenever I'm in town visiting my kids this is a must for breakfast! The food is to die for! Fresh waffles and fruit, biscuits and gravy, and thick crispy bacon. Lastly, some of the best cinnamon rolls to be had!

My partner and I recently visited the Machine Shed for an impromptu date. At the end of it we both agreed that we enjoyed the restaurant. It has a truly homey feel from the décor to the food. To make it better the service was good. The greatest part was that since they are open a little later, we were able to enjoy the restaurant without a large crowd. The one down fall, and the reason that I only gave four stars, is the attached store. It has a wonderful selection of cute and unique items, I found a perfect present for my grandfather, but the service on this side is very poor. The entire time that we were looking around and for several minutes after we were ready to check out, there were no employees around. This is a major problem for me. I do not mind waiting, I have worked retail, I know that there is always stuff to do in the back. The problem was that they could have easily lost a sale due to the long wait, or worse had a dishonest person come in and steal. Overall, though, this was a great experience and I would recommend the restaurant to others.

Delicious food and amazing service (Monica is the best!!)! We tried the brunch buffet and it included an omelet and eggs Benedict station. Lots of salad, fruit, pork tenderloin, chicken, dessert, hash browns and so forth. Well worth the $15.95!

It was fine. Was what you would expect from this style of restaurant. I got the fried chicken lunch. 2 pieces of chicken: a breast and a thigh. The thigh was oddly dry, but the breast was pretty good. It came with green bean casserole, fries, coleslaw, "applesauce", a roll, and piece of cake. The green bean casserole was a surprise that I did not realize I was getting, which is good because it was soggy and not very appealing. The fries were crispy and good. The coleslaw was a little too sweet and the applesauce was actually cinnamon apples. The roll was a little stale and the cake was tasty enough. Everything was edible, but nothing was remarkable.

I have been to this location many times and I have had many 5 star experiences. This time it just wasn't on par but given past experiences I will give this a 4. We were seated right away and got our drinks promptly. I ordered the country fried steak. My wife got the turkey Ruben. I usually love the country fried steak but they seamed to have changed the gravy they use. Usually it is an amazing country gravy that is peppery and fantastic. They changed to a gravy that was more like a basic chicken gravy. The mashed potatoes and country fried steak were good. If it wasn't for the gravy that was covering everything it would have been great. My wife loved her Ruben. As always we enjoyed the bread and fixings that come with the meals. I love that they always throw in a seasonal bread that is always amazing. I love the cole slaw they make. We will for sure be back. Always a great place to get a good comforting meal.

Maybe I had expectations when I ordered a BLT salad I got lots of huge chunks of romaine- heart either, the tough putter leaves, two cherry tomatoes cut in half and one sliced of IMO over cooked bacon crumbled in the bottom of the plate. I looked at the other salads and the Cobb was well cut blend of lettuce no outer leaves and much smaller pieces. I have come here every time I have visited iowabut this is my last visit. If it had said lettuce side salad maybe but IMO the main ingredients were tomatoes and bacon and they were pretty much so missing. Very disappointing. Glad my husband had tomatoes on his salad cause I sure didn’t. Clean up your act it don’t sell it please. I would hate for others to have this disappointment.

A real "taste of Iowa". All you can eat Sunday Brunch is EPIC! Leave it to a classic Iowa restaurant to do "all you can eat" right! If you're visiting Iowa the 3 places to visit are: Iowa 80 Truck Stop, Century Farms and The Machine Shed restuarant! Good food, large Iowa "Corn-Fed" portions all at fair prices and friendly service! Brought my 2 Florida Daughters there when they last visited! It was a blast!

We have lunch there and it is always good. Today we had relatives in town for the holidays and decided to go to the Machine Shed. Our young lady waitress did a excellent job and when she found out that our guests had never been there she explained everything. They were delighted to find out they got "fixings" with the meal.

Went tonight (5/11/19) and will never be back. The waitress was extremely rude to us. Got seated waited 10 min for the water. Another 10 min to place our order (food and drink)....didn't bother to ask if we needed refills or if our food was ok until we went to ask for the check. Didn't even get asked how our experience was when I went up to pay for everything. Was very disappointed and will never bring my family back there.

Setup in re-purposed old farm buildings, quaint and charming outside, similarly inside but then you get to the restaurant where you'll be more than satisfied with the oversize portions of traditional Iowan cuisine. Service is fast, friendly, accurate and the food is excellent. We had sandwiches (superized!), pork chop burgers, coffee and iced tea, every single dish and drink was excellent.

This place is great country cooking with healthy portions of food. They have variety of food from meatloaf to cat fish and great side dishes that come with your meal. Each order is defaulted automatic table serving of cottage cheese, cole slaw, fresh rolls n butter with pumpkin bread. The service has always been heart felt friendly and warm. The servers wear bib overalls and so cheerful and efficient. If you have room for desert the chocolate cake is awesome and enough for 2 or 3 people to share. This definately one of my favorite places to eat. They can accommodate large groups and even their booths are huge and roomy. If you never been here your missing out of good eating and good country cooking.

Meh. Our server apparently didn't bother to come to the table so another server finally felt bad for us and took our orders. It took forever to get the orders and they weren't even close to right. The manager did come over, apologize and take the wrong order off the bill but overall it was a bad experience. The place wasn't clean or friendly. Definitely isn't what it used be. I won't go again.

This was my first visit. The ambience was warm and cozy. The seating was well suited for families with huge round wooden tables large enough for at least 10 people and deep high back booths. The food portions are huge and large enough to share amongst your friends and family members. I am used to North Carolina styled ribs; however I found the wet barbecue sauce to be very tasty even without the vinegar and crushed peppers that I am accustomed to. The beef brisket was superb as it was free from fat and gristle. I also had grilled chicken with my combo. All meats were delicious but the veggies were undercooked. To be fair, I didn't ask if they could be cooked soft--not sure if this was an option. Some from my party ordered drinks..so, there is a bar. Didnt order dessert but the pumpkin bread at the bottom of the roll basket was a sweet addition. The waiter was friendly and very attentive to our tables. I recommend this place.

This place is wonderful. The service is great, the food is delicious, and portions are intense. We started with potato skins which were great. After that we ordered our food. The bartender forgot to put the order in but we didn't notice because we were having a great time. The bartender was super apologetic and although we said it was all ok she went out of her way to get the potato skins comped to make up for it. When the food came out there were giant plates of wonder in front of us and it all tasted amazing.

Good food and great service. Sometimes there is a small wait but it is worth it. The food is always cooked and tastes good. The place is kept clean and in good shape. Parking is kind of tricky but not too bad if you find a good spot. Saturday they have the breakfast bar which is filling and good food! Good place for family and kids as well. First of all. Their pop is way over priced. Over 3.00 for a fountain pop is straight stealing. Spent 34 on the rest of the food for my wife and I and it wasn't worth that price. Good food, just over priced.

I was gone for 15 years and they are not what I remember. If this was an off night, places like this shouldn't be having off nights. A simple pork chop was overcooked, dry, and tough. The sweet potatoes came to the table luke warm. They were obviously under staffed and it took 10-15 minutes to get any attention so I could tell them my meal was substandard. This made for a very long meal that left me irritated. The next time I am in town, I'll be skipping this place.

We love Machine Shed's weekend brunch. The Des Moines location is right next to the Living History Farms off of Hickman Road in Urbandale. There is no better setting for this restaurant than being next to an attraction that celebrates the farm life. Be warned though, the line can get quite long on the weekends. Fortunately, there is a sizable gift shop in the area to buy all sort of farm related knick knacks. The food itself is your typical hardy all-American farm food consisting of eggs, meats, and plenty of desserts for after the meal. The restaurant does offer a regular menu as well, and serving portion are plentiful. One of their most famous items is the cinnamon rolls. It's about the equivalent of 4 of your standard rolls, and it costs about 4 times the price too. There are plenty of parking available and the service is friendly. Highly recommend visiting this place for weekend brunch when in the area.

I've never been treated so special in a restaurant like my family and I do when I come to this place. We are very particular about how we are treated when we go to a restaurant. The server was very kind. Made you feel at home. Other waitresses were smiling at us and one even complimented on my child. That makes me feel real welcome and I know for a fact that your staff go through some training on how to train their customers and it seems that the results are amazing. The waitress made sure that my iced tea was filled up and even asked me if I needed a refill before we left. She said happy mothers day to my wife and you don't get that just anywhere. This place is like home and I have not talked about the food yet...well the food as you all know is the best!

We eat here every year with family when we visit the area from Florida. We love the atmosphere and the nice big round tables and family style service. The wait staff is always friendly and attentive. The food has gone down hill the last few times we have been there which is why I gave it 3 stars. My chicken was cooked until it was obliterated and my husband's 2 inch thick chop was way overcooked and dry as well. Hopefully they can get this taken care because we really do enjoy our visits.

The girl waiting on me was great, and the mac and cheese good. But I felt like it could have been a bit better, a little extra cheese to me would make this dish awesome. Also the pinco crumbs they put on make it taste a little more plastic, besides the fact that it's made in a skillet. But I can tell it was made well and I enjoyed it. I do, however think that there should be a offer or a -50 cents to add for extra cheese kind of deal. I also think the noodles were a little overcooked, which happens when its placed in a skillet instead of a regular bowl. But honestly I had it the next day with a little extra cheese and it was delicious. The chocolate cake is also superb, best cake I've ever tasted! And the waitress was so kind and generous, patient with me and really helped me out, I really liked her! She really loved the bread pudding so I will have to come back some other time to give it a try! All in all four stars, and I'm a picky person when it comes to my mac and cheese, so you know it was good! Also the dinner rolls and cottage cheese is grade A quality! Overall it was a very enjoyable evening for me, thank you! :) Jojo.

Just not as good as it used to be. Our waitress seemed overwhelmed as she told us twice she'd be with us in a moment. Ordered the all you care to eat fish, only choice was baked (typically fried is an option). I can make the same with my microwave at home. My buddy ordered a ribeye, they served him prime rib. The family style sides were good, as was the bread.

Know what to order. (Hint: not the salads!) Atmosphere was pleasant, like Cracker Barrel homey, but bigger. All the servers wear overalls, but not sure any of them like to. Service was slower than we hoped, but overall it was a decent stop.

Great, friendly service! Breakfast buffet is one of the best anywhere. The bacon is crispy without being too burnt, the scrambled eggs are fluffy, the biscuits and gravy are like grandma used to make. Top it off with a fresh, hot cinnamon roll, and you've got yourself a nice food coma going on.

Since they changed/remodeled/redid their menu the quality of the food has just gone downhill. Had a patty melt, it was a pre-formed, frozen patty. Got chicken strips for my son, they put the steamed carrots on the same plate and the juice from the carrots ruined the breading on the chicken. Wife's chicken pot was good but looked small. Server was great though.

Went there for the first time with my husband and we had the buffet. There were not many choices and everything was really bland and just not very good at all. Also ordered a cup of their so called famous potato soup and it was not good I did not even finish it. Ended up paying almost 50.00 and all we really had was salad and the corn. Also 3 dollars for a soda is crazy. Most likely will not return

Great that proceeds go to lhf. Salad bar was great. Wish they had soup on it. I got smoked chicken special. It was far from special. Dried out and rubbery. Mashed tater and gravy great. The fried chicken was very good and moist. Waitresses was good.

Nice portions. Friendly staff. Smaller tables do seem to take presidence when larger tables are seated first if it's busy though. 4 tables seated about 10 minutes after ours were all helped before us.
