Great coffee and lovely seating area. Really good sandwiches too.
Awesome food. Great pizza and hot foods. Nice place to eat outside.
Easy to access, friendly staff. Prices are a little expensive but again, it's the same everywhere in the US unless you're going to the low price stores.
Always a great selection of hot and cold meals. Good quality, home made taste! Always a long wait, so calling ahead is a must or go at off hours. Market has a great selection of imported foods and is my go to as necessary around the holidays.
The East Rock neighborhood of New Haven has several Italian deli/bodega/small grocers within walking distance of just about the entire neighborhood. While they all have advantages and disadvantages Nica's is definitely my favorite. I've yet to order anything from the deli in the back that I wasn't happy with whether a sandwich on a hard roll, a panini, or just a slice of pizza. The employees are always friendly though when it's busy you may experience a more curt interaction. The line can be long to order food at peak lunch time but it always seems to move quickly. I find the prices extremely competitive for the amount of food I get and still think the breakfast sandwich is a steal on days I'm too lazy to make myself something at home. If you're just doing grocery shopping (or maybe a little of eating and grocery shopping) the selection isn't enormous but what they do have is always good. The fresh produce is great to have nearby. I wouldn't rely on it for my one stop grocery shopping as I'd have to be more selective in what I want and the prices are a little bit higher than a chain grocery (though really you're paying a small bit extra for the convenience). I pick things up when I realize I'm missing something from my weekly grocery run to complete a meal.
Hello everyone! My name is Rosanna and I am one of the owners here at Nica's! I just wanted to thank you all for posting. I read every review, but as a very hands-on owner ( and not great with computers) i don't often get a chance to reply. We have been training new people and good help is hard to find! But we are working diligently to continue to provide the best service and products to you ! Your comments are a great way for me to check into things and I appreciate every single one. I am looking forward to reading more and to another great year!
I love this place, outdoor seating is THE thing! They have excellent food (Paninis!), fair prices and are simply a great place to stop by
Good food.
the prepared and hot food are off the chain!! prices are low enough to where i thought the girl who rang me out forgot something. A BOMB sandwich, chips and drink for under 9 bucks, that is unheard of now. They have outside seating which is always cool for people with pups and enjoying your order right on Orange St. haven't really tried anything as far as market goes but I'm sure its just as good.
Great products. It has a quiet outdoorplace to eat. Relaxing.
Prepared food is good. A bit pricey
My favorite walking distance local gourmet grocery store. Love summer section of fresh yummy Gelato. You can find almost every rare Italian items like jam and cheese or even Italian treat. The price is pretty high but we'll deserve its quality.
Half the restaurants(markets) that deliver to YNHH are lazy and they park on the sidewalk. This makes it difficult for the disabled who use wheelchairs. When you mention it to them they have an attitude and say they are there for only a short time. They do not want to walk. Some of them should consider walking, it burns calories. Not Tony he parks legally and when I complimented him on parking legally he brushed it off. He said it was only common courtesy. The guy is humble and polite.
Busy but quick service
The best Italian market in New Haven. The prepared foods are delicious and made fresh every day. Fresh vegetables are always available and many Italian imports you cannot find anywhere else you can find at a glance here. Try it you'll like it!
This place is amazing! The food they make is phenomenal and always fresh. I highly reccomend thier orso pasta, mac n cheese, brussel sprouts, flag sandwiches, and pizza. The foods so good the place is always packed & lines get long during lunch hours.
Great food
Great at lunch time...nice variety...also have outdoor seating for spring and summer...
A lovely high-end neighborhood market with groceries, specialty items, and hot prepared food. The egg sandwiches are my favorite, and are inexpensively priced.
Great quality produce and their deli makes excellent paninis. The only knock on them is that they're a little on the pricey side.
Local gem and a must for a quick tasty bite for lunch. Pick up a few groceries or fresh-made sides for dinner while you're there.
They have the best mac and Cheese, paninis, (and chicken noodles soup only in winter time )
This is the friendliest store and the deli staff is absolutely amazing!! Always have a great experience not to mention a laugh
I ordered the bacon Sicilian pizza (one of my favorite from there) like I always do. Got it home where it was already cut into 8 pig pieces , my partner had to and I had 2. When I was just finishing my last piece I looked down at was like what the heck is that. It was a very nice size flattened and cooked big bug with about 4 to 6 legs (kinda big). Needless to say the other half of the pizza was thrown n the trash (total waste of money) and of course I had to see it after we had already eaten 4 pieces of 8 piece (it's not cheap). I was pretty pissed for the rest of the night. I guess I won't be eating anything from there for a while. I have to get over this first, I'm hurt, I love this place.............. Ok, I like that the owner responded and as I have said before I love this place. I have eaten here numerous times since the original review and everything has been Top Notch as usual. I have to hold the owner to his word the next time I go.
NICAS IS THE BEST...love the paninis..pizzas..all the food is good..catering is great..good prices and quality...best place in downtown New Haven.
Pricy as a grocery store goes, but the location is very convenient for East Rock residents. The deli counter at the back is terrific - have liked everything I've tried from there.
Food is excellent subs, salads, pizza and fast service....also beautiful cashiers!!
The sandwiches are outstanding. There is nothing better than sitting at the outdoor tables enjoying a Flag sandwich on a warm day. The hot bar for take out at the end of a busy day has fantastic options. The produce is often local in season. Always a good selection. Always fresh. Salad ingredients are particularly good.
Food is great, fresh produce, nice staff. Popular so there's usually a wait. Worth it though. :)
Delicious Food!!
The line to order a sandwich is really long between noon and 1 PM. But they do serve everyone quickly. We ordered chicken parmesan and chicken with peppers (which turned out to be sausage and peppers...). Chicken parmesan had sausage taste to it as well..
Best coffee, treats, baked goods,produce....
Great food. One of the best delis ever.
While a tad pricey, Nica's is a gem! Walking to Nica's when I need cilantro or peppers or seltzer or lemons is extremely convenient and the produce is always pretty delicious. Coffee here is some of the best in New Haven and everyone working at Nica's is quick with service.
I'd give it a five at times but everyone has their own way of prepping what you order. One day you'll have this great perfect toasted chicken parm the next day you'll have a not so toasted chicken parm with a overwhelming pile of Parmesan cheese on it
Great Italian deli. Neighborhood staple. Friendly.
No baskets to carry your stuff and staff not particularly very friendly.
Excellent little local market with deli and take out, plus catering.
A nice Italian deli/market. Everything here is good. They have fresh produce, meat and a selection of specialty pantry products. The baked goods are high quality. Last but not least, the cooked food at the back of the store.... I could eat here every day. The food is cooked fresh, seasoned well and the service is awesome. If you want to eat amazing Italian style food, you have to try it out. There is outside seating if you want to eat there.
Best sandwiches in the area. The line does get ridiculously long around lunch, but it moves quickly.
Best small market I've been to, hands down. The hot food bar is amazing
Lots to choose from on the menu, so you can't go wrong going there on a lunch break. The paninis are HUGE and you basically get two meals out of most of their sandwiches, for a pretty decent price too. Only complaint is they can get very busy around lunchtime, but that's also a good sign that the food is good!
I go to Nicas Market multiple times threw out the week, this is the best itialian market around. I saw a comment below a lady speaks of a rude sandwich maker. I believe I was in line when this woman spoke to the training employee as if she were stupid. Tbe experienced clerk stepped in to help and the woman in front of me became vulgar toward both staff members. The nerve of her to post on here the staff was rude when she was treating them as if she were above them both! I was impressed at how the two lady’s continued to serve us guests with dignity and respect. I have never been mistreated by any staff at this establishment. I will continue to visit Nicas as usual
First time in this store and I loved it!! Just my kind of store. Everything one could want! I don't live in the area but I will drive to this store to shop! I love Mom n Pop stores. A lot of history here. I loved my sandwich too!
I can't say enough good things about this place. The food is out of this world, amazing hot and cold subs, lots of hot food to take out as well. Great little market on top of all that.
The best chicken Parmesan sub I have ever eaten. Everything is great here. Be sure to call ahead as they are always bisy
Food is great. The store has great specialty items too
The sandwich maker was very rude and disrespectful as she yelled and got confrontational with me. Requested the manager who ask her to apologize and she did very in sincerely. Have been a frequent customer for over 10 years and very disappointed in the behavior and what she model for her colleagues.
Italian deli with just about a lot of everything!! Fresh well made dishes that will put a smile on the whole family faces!! Slices of pizza for lunch and dinner..Stuffed artichokes.. Meatballs and sausage subs...Best deli in New Haven!!
Great food. Don’t deliver which is disappointing and they would definitely get more business if they did. Cute, quaint market.
This place was cute but definitely more of a market than a place for food. Good for coffee and a bagel. They also had fruit and basic groceries. The seating area outside was nice and had super friendly birds that would eat out of our hands.
Great food! Fresh, delicious, and lots of vegetarian options!
Excellent small market with crazy lines sometimes that would normally scare people off. But, they've manage to add efficient to the equation so your patience is never tested.
Front staff seem bothered
This is a good place to buy food and ingredients for a receipt. But if you need to buy some other things to your home, better choose other place.
Getting a breakfast sandwich on a Sunday morning was not quite as streamlined as you might think. I ordered a sausage egg and cheese on a bagel, but I needed to get my own bagel from the case in the front. That's kind of weird that they don't have any behind the counter. Maybe it's a charming quirk. Anyways, the sandwich was delicious and so cheap. Great value and worth the quirks.
Great overpriced food.
A little pricey but very good hot food!
Love the food and great service
This place is nicely situated in the East Rock area. Food always smells good - haven't tried. But I knocked off a store bc it is kind of pricey.
Overpriced! Food not all that.
Nice neighborhood market with good selection of hot/cold food at back counter, as well as great pizza and sandwiches. A lot of grocery items are overpriced (in my opinion), but that's sort of par for the course with this type of place. Pastries/muffins are really good and their gelato (which they make available during the warm months) is delicious. I come here every week and will continue to do so. Definitely a staple in the neighborhood
Great selection of artisian, Italian food. Highly recommend their Panini sandwiches, along with their take away food. Also a great selection of grocery store items.
Good sandwiches and pretty reliable, though not exceptional. Also the prices for groceries and everyday items hurt. I get that it's about convenience and that comes at a premium, but man...some of the prices are outrageous. Prefer Liuzzi's overall but of course Nica's is more centrally located.
Great food and family
Nica's is what every neighborhood store should aspire to be.
Best food in New Haven!
Great fresh prepared food, meats, and produce. staff is very friendly and helpful as well.
Great food selection, friendly service
Really good store made food. Great cuts of fresh meats & steaks.
What a great find, definitely will come back
The food here is good but the service is quite lacking. The staff in the food area all seem as though they'd rather be somewhere else. The staff at the cash registers are a tad less frosty but still not engaged. I only go here in a pinch......
Food is great but it is on the pricey side. Staff is friendly but there is limited and unorganized seating, and can get very crowded. But overall would recommend trying!
Fantastic neighborhood place. Fresh food prepared or not!
Very nice place to eat outdoors, great food to take out, shopping for a few things are convenient, the people are very friendly!
Nice little neighborhood bodega.
Great little spot in East Rock. Had a bagel with egg and cheese and I was pretty happy all day. Will definitely go again.
Great food, tons of options. I love their individual pizza selections. Mostly reasonable prices.
okay, I live in Chicago but after a recommendation from a family member, I ordered four types of the jarred sauce (marinara, vodka, puttanesca and garlic). Since my life experience has taught me that jarred sauce is one step above ketchup, I had limited expectations. I couldn't have been more wrong, all four were amazing and tasted exactly like homemade. After reading the ingredients you will get an idea why. Simple, real, high quality ingredients with no preservatives. I cannot recommend the sauce enough and I can't wait to finish the two jars I have left. I also cannot wait to visit Nica's in person. Good place for lunch but expect a line at noon. Better to go a little earlier or later. Nice deli and paninis.
Excellent food! From comfort food to special diet friendly! Pup friendly patio.
Outstanding Italian market
One of my favorite places to have a sunday breakfast in new haven. Plus, the best sandwiches in town!
Polular place. Fast paced.
This is the best Italian Deli I have found between Maine and NYC. Pizza and prepared foods are excellent. Their baked goods and coffee is amazing. The outdoor patio is charming and while the indoor space is tight it's jam-packed with some of the best Italian items I've found apart from my seven years in Rome.
Sandwiches and wraps that delicious and reasonably priced. Counter staff is efficient and helpful. The market side has a terrific selection of imported goods, fresh meat and produce.
Great place! Ready made food and sandwiches are quite affordable and taste great! Especially recommend breakfast sandwiches. Nice atmosphere outside to sit and do work or chat. Ice cream is a bit pricy but worth the price when you want some quality gelato. Staff are especially nice, went into back to get me some corn on the cob as store was closing one night and the corn had already been put away.
My favorite place to visit. Best coffee ever!!!
I go back to Nica's time and time again. Popular place. They serve you as fast as they can. Nice place to get a quick bite or to sit outside on their patio. For vegans, they do have a vegan wrap, and you can customize it.
Food is excellent and the cashiers are beautiful!
NOT GLUTEN FREE FRIENDLY - little understanding of cross contamination. Provided gluten free wrap with breaded chicken inside. That is not gluten free. Have gotten catering there almost everyday this week and they got it right one day. Salads came with croutons sometimes, completely forgot the gluten free sandwiches other times and now the breaded chicken.
Nica's has amazing food, and I love how nice and welcoming the workers are, even when the shop is busy. However, a few months ago I had a large order placed for an important meeting. I had called ahead and scheduled pick-up for 11:45 as the meeting was breaking at 12:00, however when a co-worker and I arrived at 11:40, I was told that the order had not been started. The woman who I spoke with (who I was later told was an owner) was unapologetic and not quick to fix the problem. I was very disappointed as my company often orders large amounts of food from Nica's and has never had this problem before.
Excellent Italian market. I ordered the Pesto Chicken Pannini. It was enough for two people. But I ended up eating the whole thing myself because it was so good!
This is a little diamond in the rough. Great lunch spot. Grab a seat outside if you can. Got a cold sandwiches are good. Paninis are even better. Israeli couscous salad was so good. Looking forward to going back and trying more. Regular groceries and produce is pricey...why it got 4 out of 5 stars
Great meet selection, friendly staff and has everything
The vegan panini is very delicious.
The food is delicious and the atmosphere/service is excellent. The selection of products is good. Its a little bit pricey but overall its a great place.
Fantastic deli section for sandwiches and hot by-the-pound dishes, good dairy and vegetable section. The staples are here but a bit more expensive than elsewhere. Good breads but often sold out of the better loaves. Coffee is ok.
Very convenient location, lovely outside seats, nothing but a good taste one nail? pricey!
Love the food. It's always so flavorful and never disappoints.
Well the food quality at Nica's is excellent prices are a bit High but you can deal with it cuz of the quality of food however the organization going through the food line at the back of the store is ridiculous there's no number system there's, you can come in from for five different aisle so people are walking into each other nobody knows whose turn it is next it's a joke what and certainly a waste of time it takes a lot longer to get through from the getting your food to paying , several times now and girls always on the phone with her she's taking orders or on a personal call and trying to ring you out it's crazy and again time consuming and when you have a half hour even an hour for lunch you spend 20 minutes or more in there just getting in and getting out
I love the chicken pesto panini. Must try
Fresh food, cheerful service.
Food was outstanding. Stopped here to grab some lunch and head to one of the local breweries. I had the Italian combo. I know it's just an Italian combo, but damn it was good! My wife had a bangin' eggplant parm grinder and it was delicious as well. Definitely worth a try!
This place is 50% of why I go to new haven
Nice place and excellent cheesecake
Quaint, lots of fresh produce and great prepared foods. The staff are very helpful and the store is very clean and organized.
I love this place it's one of my favorite place in new haven!! Located in the East rock neighborhood, I like having lunch there. I have preferences for their panini and I never regret my choices ! They are efficient, nice, and very respectful. They also have some chairs outside so you can just enjoying your food.
Some customers a bit snooty but the food was very good.
Paninis and Sicilian pizza are pretty great.
Nice neighborhood type of deli, with numerous hot and cold food options. I had the Italian hero loaded to the brim with traditional cuts.
I ordered an eggplant parmesan, and being a vegetarian, expected the food preparation to not involve the use of meat products. But instead my sandwich was covered in the sauce that had been in the chicken.
Fantastic sandwiches and subs for good prices, make sure you call ahead though - the line can get incredibly long. Grocery section is very well stocked and has plenty to offer for such a small building. Staff is kind, all around great place.
I love Nica's. The people are nice and the food in the deli is always great. They have a nice mix of traditional Italian grocery items and things that you might not expect at a small grocer -- artisanal pickles and Halo Top.
amazing bagels! also other things but your better off just exploring than reading about the things that taste good here. It is very busy at lunch
I lived in New Haven for 6 years, and Nica’s was one of my favorite things about living there! Everyone loves Nica’s. You can’t go wrong with their sandwiches, and the whole market is great. They have lovely outdoor seating in warm weather. We also used their catering services for our wedding brunch, and it was ideal! They were helpful and flexible about the entire thing, and our guests were extremely happy and well-fed. We look forward to visiting Nica’s again when we are in town!
One of the areas better grocery spots. Pricey but good produce, sandwiches, fresh but small meat counter and friendly staff. Worth spending the extra dollar or two for a convenient local spot.
We have visited Nica's three times this month and each time the experience has been delightful. Contrary to what the previous reviewer says, we have found the staff to be super friendly, the food delicious and the dining outside in the warm summer evenings has been wonderful. We have watched the owners mingle with the patrons in a most friendly way. The Flag Panini was delicious but my favorite so far is the spicy buffalo chicken pizza! This deli has a lovely Italian flare, great food and nice atmosphere.....
LOVE this place. They make the best sandwiches and their prepared food is delicious. There's always a long line, but it moved very fast!!
Friendly Family owners known them over 25 years and #1 services
Great place to eat outside. Great sandwichs. I recommend the Flag
Good hot food & pizza nice Italian gro store great desert
Mostly positive experiences here. Great selection for such a small place, with prices slightly better than I've seen at similar places. The premade food deli is also top of the line. But a couple of weeks ago i bought just over 2 pounds of flank steak. Not cheap. The next morning I opened it and the meat was already spoiled. I went back, and was told that if I buy more I could look at it first. Not ideal. But everything else has been great.
Great paninis and friendly staff best place I can find for lunch
Simply the best deli in the area
This is the best place for fresh food and delicious entrees all home made.
Nica's is amazing! The food is fresh and fast, even during lunch rushes. The employees are always kind and many are bilingual. I love Nica's and feel it truly embodies the diversity (and tastiness) of East Rock. I have never been disappointed and will continue to be a loyal customer here.
Great little market
Nica's is great. Great sandwich board and hot dishes by the pound. Fresh veggies and fruits. Possibly the best pizza in New Haven (yes, I said it). Good coffee and gelato too.
Love the selection of prepared foods. Have never been disappointed. Biscotti is the best in town.
Excellent food ... very fresh ... large portion size on the panini
Great place to pick up specialty or a few missing ingredients. Good quality produce and a nice range of take away options.
Great food with super friendly staff. Whenever I am in greater New Haven and hungry, this is my go to place.
Yale atmosphere... sidewalk action New Haven
The chicken is really fresh and tasty!! Good service
Nice buffet and ice cream!
A decent grocery store with most of the daily requirements. A little more expensive than the standard store. However its close for the people in East rock. Offer good variety of food and coffee as well. Have a nice seating area outside. Staff is friendly.
It's a pretty good Market with cold Subs hot subs and some hot food. I thought this up with decent, not a great size for the money but the quality was pretty good, three out of five.
A nice little local market. It is much more expensive than a larger chain store, but the staff are kind and polite and they stock the essential foods if you need something quick in the east rock neighborhood.
A really great market that makes you feel welcome. Everything is great here including the homemade food items in the back of the market as well as the fresh coffee.
There's usually a line at lunch but it moves fast. Paninis and hot meals are great here. Salads are fresh and delicious. Mixed veggies are a trademark staple. Bread is always fresh.
Great little market/prepared foods spot. They have the best mac and cheese I've had from a restaurant/market (I ate it every week when I was pregnant). Salads are large and plentiful with chicken at great prices. Definitely a lunch time staple for the area.
I love grabbing a roast beef and cheese on a hard roll from this market. Only $5 and a wonderful, filling amount. Expect to stand in line if you're there during weekdays at lunch.
I love this place. Their food is the best!!
Great local grocery. On the pricy end, but has gourmet items not available elsewhere in New Haven. Just picked up some beautiful Morel mushrooms and fresh tarragon.
Finally fixed the roof.
Quality food, quick service, accommodating staff, neighborhood atmosphere.
Great food and great people. Classic go-to takeout: breakfast sandwiches, Sicilian-style pizza, chicken club, meatball sub... Also don't forget to check out their produce. They have the freshest basil and best selection of mushrooms in town. Seriously.
My daughter took us here on a visit. Great food selections and sandwiches to buy for eating there or taking home. Always want to go whenever in town.
My spot !! When you don’t want to cook Nica’s is the best real food, good quality and the owner and every single personal are amazing !!
Great italian deli, wish they wouldn't get confused when i want sundried tomatoes on my sandwich, then i coukd rate them on par with Vito's in Hoboken
Very good food but some stuff a bit on the pricey side. That's what you get for convenience and great service.
Great diverse selection with friendly staff. Always visit in my lunch break. Highly recommend
My god. This place is incredible. Their portobello paninis are LEGENDARY. Quantity AND quality!
"Sick woofs".. a pre (hockey) game tradition... The only thing that's bad.. is trying to decide what to order.. It is my heaven. Amen .. see you soon.
I have heard about Nica's market for a while now but I haven't had a chance to go there until now. It is the quintessential sandwich/grinder/deli. Their sandwiches are big and fresh with lots of options and wonderful bread choices. Their side dishes all look great. We got the fresh tomato and basil and the macaroni and cheese sides and they were fantastic. I wanted an egg and pepper sub, which they didn't have on the menu, but they made one for me anyway and it was delicious. It has a little market as well if that's the kind of thing you like
Great deli and breakfast sandwiches, nice place for a quick breakfast or lunch. Groceries are a bit overpriced but it's convenient for East rock!
