UPDATE: I got a call from Chris offering to have another look at the vehicle and see if they could come up with a better explanation for the failure. Since I don't trust the Bob Penkhus people, I will be taking it to a Volvo expert in Denver to remove my climate control module and send it out to an electronics shop that will be able to tell me what software was used and what the reason for the failure is. I will update with the results here.
ORIGINAL POST: I was charged for a software update (they are supposed to be free according to Volvos website) I was told on the phone that the software update would take between 30mins to an hour. I brought the vehicle in for my appointment at 10:00am, they processed me in by 10:30 and I sat down in the waiting room. 2 hours later my Service Consultant by the name of Chris Sherban came in and asked me if I wanted to update the ECM too since they updated everything else. I asked how much money that would cost me and he said only $30. So I said "sure, we might as well update everything while we are doing this". In total I waited 4 hours before my very nervous and flustered service consultant told me that they would have to replace a fuel pump since it failed a diagnostic (a recall issue that did not apply to my car). I DID NOT REQUEST OR APPROVE OF ANY WORK BEING DONE OTHER THAN THE SOFTWARE UPDATES. I DID NOT ASK THEM TO DO THEIR BIG INSPECTION OF ALL THE COMPONENTS ON MY VEHICLE EITHER... I ONLY ASKED FOR AND APPROVED OF THEM DOING A SOFTWARE UPDATE.
The shuttle took me home. They kept my vehicle for all of Wed, Thur, Fri. When I picked up my vehicle the climate controll functions were ALL broken. I noticed this while I was driving my vehicle from the back of the building to the front so I pulled imto the drive in front of the service area and told the service consultant about it... he drove it in to the shop and when he brought it back he told me that it wasn't their fault and that there was "NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT". It just happened to break when I sat in it. It was late (past 6pm) everybody was tired and ready to go home. My options were: argue and insist OR take my vehicle home and try to figure out how to repair the damage on my own so that they dont dammage any more stuff. Usually I never take any of my vehicles to any mechanics, ever, for anything, but since I since I dont have access to a Volvo computer and an expensive subscription to Volvo for new software... I had to risk my car at the Bob Penkhus Stealership to get software updates recomended by a NHTSB service bulletin. BIG MISTAKE! I will be taking this car to a third party to see if they even did the suftware updates on all the modules. I'll let you know what happens.
