Purchased meat from them. I have thought since we bought it that the hamburger we got tasted weird but tonight was the worst. We grilled steaks. When opened the package steak was brown. I told my husband it looks rotten. He cooked it. I took one bite and the meat was rotten sour taste. It was horrible we did not eat anymore. I plan to throw the meat away. We spent $650 what a waste never again.

We drove up from Texas to visit my wife's dad, who lives just outside the city. I saw this place online and people were saying how good the food was here, as well as their meat selection. We came in for lunch and we were not disappointed. The burger was so good! And they have these fried cheese balls that were amazing.

I love this place I have been coming here since I was a kid they know me they know my family heck there's pictures on the wall of my father and grandfather they are all great friends of my family. I am in DesMoines periodically for work and ALWAYS have a Dad's Killer, Hot, cut in half, when I am in town. I really like the sandwich, and if I lived here I would be buying my meat here for sure. The people are great, especially Johnny (he's holding the tray of meat). This place has been around for ages and has a certain charm - call me an old-timer, but this is truly a neighborhood place. Once there was a note on the door, warning that they would be closing early on a certain date - the local high school team was playing that day and they were closing a couple of hours early so they could go to the game.

Great lunch, again! Called and ordered a Grinder, double, and a Dad's Killer. Guy on the phone asked if I wanted Dad's doubled, duh, of course. Picked up and found out they don't do a double on the Dad's. But, got a second Killer. Perfect bribe for the boss, needing days off soon anyway. All three were amazing. Thanks for a great meal guys.

I was lucky enough to find this place, because of Google's new explore feature in Maps. I showed up only twenty minutes before they closed for a weeklong vacation. The employees were surprisingly happy to help, after I learned they were really trying to get everything put away for their time off. They offered me several suggestions, offered me a chance to try some different pieces of meat, and were extremely chipper. I don't think you could find better service at any butcher shop. I decided to chose the grinder, and I wasn't disappointed. It met my grinder craving, so now I won't need to get one at the fair. I will be back.

B&B is a des moines staple. They have an amazing meat counter that you can order almost anything you want. They have amazing meat packages that you can call and order or just show up and see what they have on hand. Today we decided to order our usual. I got the xtra large piggy porkloin. And my wife got the 2/3 double cheese burger basket. The porkloin was amazing and juicy as usual. They have a super thick tenderloin. They are just one of my top 5 here in Des Moines for tenderloins. I got a side of mac salad which is always a filling treat. My wife loved her double cheese burger and fries. The burger was juicy and perfectly cooked. The fries were crispy and hot. They have a nice slaw. Not to sweet and not to sour. This is a good go to when on the south side visiting family. All in all as always a great trip we will be back soon I'm sure.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the killer options they have here. Dad's Killer is a favorite, the Tenderloin is superb, The guys are friendly and will be glad to make suggestions if you just can't decide. This place absolutely rules! If anyone wants to argue my review, they may say the Appeal is below excellent because the building has been there for three generations and looks it. In other words, it isn't a 5-star restaurant. That is part of the appeal! B&B is what it is, and what it is is exceptional Midwestern comfort food. Relaxed and friendly, filled with value and camaraderie. I'll defend this Excellent across the board review with anybody.

A small piece of New York, in the heart of Des Moines! As others have stated, don't judge this book by it's cover/exterior. This is one of my favorite places around. Not only is John the butcher an amazing food artist, he'll take the time to show you how to cook something, discuss how to best cut, prepare and serve it and even give you a demonstration. They pride themselves on the organic, grass fed products they offer and you can taste the difference. Not only are they a great butcher and nice little grocery store, but their sandwiches and food items are fantastic! Zach's Italian is about the perfect sandwich. The Dad Killer is a close second for me and will be a first place winner for those who don't like the slightly spicier take with Zach's. Their chicken salad is full of moist, fresh chicken, not the nasty canned stuff that many places use. It sends my wife into orbit. All of their sides are also good. I admit, their onion rings won't win any awards, but who can complain when it's all so good anyway? They do have a cozy spot for dining in where the news papers from the 1940s are on display, or you can take it to go. Wrapped in butcher paper, it'll stay hot long after other take out foods. At lunch they are very packed, with over 150 people filling their small halls in an hour and a half. It feels just like the great butchers and shops in the heart of New York and it's just the kind of place where they like to know your name, remember your face and offer you a story or two while you order. It just feels like a home, and likely tastes even better.

Just so-so. Have been here a number of times, and tried numerous sandwiches. Honestly the sandwiches are just OK to Good. They really don't live up to the hype. Especially their "prize winning" tenderloin. It's just another tenderloin. Not really significantly better than any other I've had. Sure it's huge, but who wants to eat a ton of mediocrity? I kinda think that they should just stick to doing what they do best, that's being a good meat market, and leave the sandwiches to somebody else.

We were brought in by all of the great things we'd heard about the place. "Sandwiches are amazing" "meat is so fresh". However, the place is rather unsanitary, we watched the guy behind the counter soils his soda on the meat, and the meat is all in vac-pacs from Tyson/JBS. I can't testify to the quality of the sandwiches as we left after a 30 minute wait, but they were all lunch meat sandwiches on cheap store brand bread, so I can't imagine thereth all that special. If you want high quality meat products, sicks to the farmers market on Saturday or drive an hour north to Sorry City Locker.

A special shout-out to John, who has generously shared his knowledge and skills to help me transform an average meal into something very special. I am so appreciative of the old fashioned customer service where they treat every request as a priority. I particularly enjoy the custom meat cutting and packaging. It saves me so much time…did I mention that their locally raised meat is amazing and almost always the best value. I get rave reviews when I prepare their thick-cut bacon into candied maple/pecan strips or layer their thin strips into brown sugar bacon waffles....yum! From beef to pork and everything in between this is by far our favorite meat shop and the sandwiches are killer too. Not just a deli, a visit here is like stepping back in time to the “good old days”.

This is the best place to get a sandwich. Been around nearly 90 years if not more. Has the old school grocery shop with fresh butcher and deli in the back. They remember you even if it's been a long time between visits. Dad's Killer and Zach's Killer are the two best things on the menu. Macaroni salad is amazing as well.

The food here is awesome and customer service is excellent. Everything that I have had here to eat has been delicious! The burger, dad's killer sandwhich, rueben, and sausage sandwhich are were all fantastic and they even make their own marble rye bread! If you haven't been here before then you need to try it and stop reading the reviews! Heads up though, the inside isn't much to look at and the seating is bar style, but the food more than makes up for it! They are always busy for a reason.

All the sides are sysco deep fried junk . I ordered a pastrami sandwich which had literally 2 pieces of meat with slightly toasted rye bread that was so dry i almost choked on it. Fed half the bread to my dogs who did seem to like it. Not sure if im missing out on how to order or what to order because what i did ordered shouldn't have even called a sandwich!

I will be back, not only because everyone was so nice but also because I bought the best dry aged tomahawk ribeye steaks I've ever had. Real caveman diet. Hidden Gem in Des Moines! Check this place out if you've never been! It will not disappoint. Looks like a normal convenience store. Back has a giant meat counter, with sandwiches you don't want to miss! Dad's Killer or Zach's are their two most famous! Get your big girl/big boy pants! Staff is friendly and charismatic! wife and I went there around 1:30 thinking we'd miss the lunch rush.. ordered 2 1/3 lb. cheeseburger basket meals one with coleslaw and the other with macaroni salad for side.... took quite a while to get the order... some locals passed through and all attention went directly to bullshiting with them .. we finally got the meals and went and grabbed a soda and went to pay......now we asked for the burger with everything on it.... we got the bun, a sad burger(med warm) a slice of cheese lots of mustard and a couple of pickles .... a sad order of fries yes sad been done a while ... hacked down what we could tossed the rest .. 14.00 bucks not well spent... I think dad needs to come back and whip this place back into it's old glory because it's lost it some where. I've had better hockey puck burgers at a swap meet ...sadly not impressed at all

This was my second time going. I got in before the lunch rush and gave my order. The place got really busy and I waited. I'm a patient person and didn't think it would take that long. As FIFTY minutes ticked by, I watched people who didn't work there grab a soda, walk behind the meat case and eat as people tried to make food around them. I saw a few of the employees go in the back and do a shot, yes, I saw you. I saw them give free food to people who got there after me because he missed part of their order. And then of all things, when I said something about how long I had waited, the little guy that runs the place started cussing at me and wanted to kick me out because I said something.
