Historic Bowen Cottage "the pink house" hosts its annual crafts fair with some high-end artisans.

Stavros Macrakis

Extraordinary Victorian cottage with perfectly preserved interiors This cottage was the summer house of the Bowen family, wealthy dry good merchants in NYC. Built in the fashionable board-and-batten style, and painted in a surprising pink (its local nickname is the Pink House), it has preserved its mid-19th century interiors and furnishings, as well as its outbuildings, including the oldest indoor bowling alley in North America. Good tour -- though I would have liked to be able to photograph the interiors. Extraordinary!

Roseland Cottage is a very beautiful place. I went there for a Civil War reenactment and it made me feel like I was back in the Civil War because that's what stuff look like back then I feel like you should go visit it because it has a lot of history there and if it looks very nice

This s a gem of a property to explore the grounds as well as take a house tour (the tour fee supports the upkeep of the historic property so I feel pretty good about it each time I visit). The gardens are stunning. A real work of art and volunteer effort of the local garden club. Kudos to them.. it clearly is a lot of effort to maintain such a garden. It amazes me such volunteerism still exists. Last tip... take a box lunch with you and enjoy a relaxing couple hours of touring and picnic. We visit the area a few times each year. There is much to see and do in the area with the local agricultural activities (farm stands, pick your own, etc) as well as scenic driving. Also a few min away is downtown Putnam with a number of cool antique shops, cafe's, etc. All in all, a very nice destination for a day in the country. Bottom line... Stop in, enjoy, and support their historic preservation efforts. You will not be disappointed one bit.

Lovely home with terrific gardens. Went during a craft fair and it was a great afternoon. They opened the house for tours even though it was the off season.

We stopped in because entry was free and it's a reasonably short drive. Normally entrance fees are 10 bucks per person. IMO I don't think it's worth the entrance fee although I did not see the interior of the house. Pros: the grounds and exterior of the house were in good shape and had some nice photo ops. You can access everything for free except for the interior of the house. Cons: they do not allow self guided tours of the main attraction that being the interior of the house. They have a tour once per hour so that means you may have to wait a long time just to get a look at the interior. The tour group we observed was small maybe 15 people so you may have to wait a few hours if the place is busy. We asked why they didn't allow self guided tours. The reasoning we received from the staff was they had valuable artifacts to protect. We asked why they don't use methods like roping off and sensors so people can self guide. They had no answer. Apparently they did say we only have 1 property where self guided tours are allowed. So we have noted the company's name and website showing all the properties they have for touring and we will avoid them in the future due to our experience here.

Grounds will be beautiful as they were just being prepared for season. Would expect it to be lovely as they finish tidying gardens. Display gallery was sparse and we did not go in to the house as it was too long a wait for next tour. We did notice that the tours of the inside of the house was pretty quick.

This was unbelievably beautiful. A unique house with historic furnishings (many original). It's probably the finest Gothic Revival I've ever seen. Maybe the finest standing. Everything is unique and gorgeous. A must see.

Informative tour. Main reason for going there was the steam punk festival. Good time. Skits, music, food, items to buy. Second year . Hope more pertisipation spelling???? In years to come. Could turn into something great. I recommend you give it a try next year . The history of the cottage is great and recommend that also.

The day was beautiful for a historic tour. The drive was easy from Springfield. We registered for a group tour at the desk in the side building. We didn't wait long. Our guide was really nice. She took us into the main house where we walked around the lower level followed by a tour of the up stairs rooms. We couldn't go into the servant portion of the house. I guess there's tours for that at different time of the year. Our guide was well studied on the property and the family who settled there. After the tour we walked the grounds admiring the gardens and the short trails on the property. This was a great visit. You'll find a lot of the original surroundings in place. It was all very interesting and a great way to spend an afternoon. Please give a thumbs up if this post was helpful. Thanks.

What a beautiful property.the grounds, outbuildings and the house are stunning with that Victorian flair. I visited the cottage for an outdoor event and didn't get a chance to tour the house. If the inside looks anything like the outside,I'm sure the interior is glorious.

A wonderfully preserved piece of history from the mid 1800s. This is a mansion not a cottage but wealthy businessmen called their summer home a "cottage" regardless of the size. It looks like Henry Chandler Bowen and his wife left yesterday and will return home today as all the furniture is in place. H.C. Bowen was our GGG Uncle. Lt. Henry Bowen was our direct ancestor and one of the original founders of Woodstock in 1686. If you have any interest in old houses don't miss this one. The original bowling alley in the barn is quite a sight also.
