I have thick somewhat curly hair and a couple small cowlicks, so I had trouble finding a barber who gave me a good haircut. When I have gotten a good haircut, it usually takes only ~5 weeks until I need another one. I don't know how, but this one-man shop gives me good haircuts that last a while (~7 weeks). He has been my only barber since my first haircut there about 3 years ago. While it is cash only and not the cheapest men's haircut in the neighborhood ($30), it is well worth it to me (would I prefer a burrito or an upgrade to my haircut so I look better a lot of the time?). This is not a place selling swanky decor, upcharged services, or some corporate image - it is one guy who knows what he's doing.

I previously was one of those guys that went for a fancy haircut at one of those slick shops on Madison Avenue(or Rodeo Drive if I was on the West Coast). In fact, my last designer barber shop had photos all over the wall like the following "To Mario, great haircut Jeff Bridges", and "To Mario, You are a fantastic barber, Derek Jeter" and many many more show biz and sports heroes. One day I said to my barber. "You have hundreds of these celebrity photos and I've been coming here for a year and never saw a single celebrity". To which my barber said, "I've worked here for four years and I never met Mario". Well you get the idea. Then about six months a client recommended 49th Street Barber. The result, this barber was every bit as good, in fact, better than the uptown guys and at half the price!" For thirty bucks ($30.00) you will walk out with a fantastic haircut. If you are truly like me and you only go to a barber for a really good haircut and not to "be seen" this is the place!

Barbershop on 49th street is the great place, where Vlad (barber) knows what kind of haircut you exactly want. It’s easy to communicate with him and speak about different things. One of the sweetest sounds to hear is when master barber Vlad calls "Next!" ... even if you're the only other customer in his shop. Then you know you're in for a great haircut from a barber who sincerely takes his craft seriously. Vlad works quickly but cuts hair meticulously, and as a customer who has patronized his business for more than ten years, I know I can rely on him to give me the best cut possible. Vlad has a very good sense of humor and it's a pleasure to return to his shop month after month... even if it means having to watch CNN on the television set mounted on his back wall. From the first scissor clicks to the final powder puff dust off, the entire haircut experience is very enjoyable. I like and trust Vlad and I recommend him highly if you live or work in his United Nations neighborhood. Oh, and did I forget to mention Vlad's barber shop has a very nice barber pole?
